Paul Deslauriers Band
Irene’s Pub, 885 Bank Street
Friday, November 3

Sometimes you just have to do what you love, and the Paul DesLauriers Band has been very busy doing just that. The trio is made up of virtuoso guitarist and singer Paul DesLauriers and masterful rhythm section Greg Morency on bass and Sam Harrisson on drums. At this year’s Maple Blues Awards in January, the members of the rhythm section each picked up awards as Bassist and Drummer of the Year. It was Morency’s second win in three years, while Harrisson got the nod for the first time. The band also took home trophies in the Electric Act of the Year as well as Entertainer of the Year categories. The band has been riding a growing wave of success since the fall of 2015 when it clinched a win at the Montreal Blues Society hosted Quebec to Memphis contest. This secured them a slot at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis in 2016, where they impressed, finishing 2nd worldwide out of a field of 119 competing bands.

Following up on the success of their self-titled album from 2014, The Paul DesLauriers Band’s latest release “Relentless” is “a genuine blues-rock escapade featuring 10 new songs encompassing their most original and powerful work to date”.

NAC Presents
Blackie & the Rodeo Kings
National Arts Centre Southam Hall, 1 Elgin Street
Saturday, November 4 @ 8 pm $39.50 - $73.50

Blackie and the Rodeo Kings, the Canadian music “supergroup” made up of celebrated veteran blues, roots, rock and folk musicians Stephen Fearing, Colin Linden and Tom Wilson, bring us the companion piece to their 2011 collaboration album “Kings And Queens”. “Kings And Kings” features some of the band’s best ‘guy’ friends from the world of roots, blues and country. Each one of the guest artists is an accomplished ‘king’ in their realm of creative endeavors and in many cases absolute ‘king’ legends in the entertainment industry.

Blackie and the Rodeo Kings originally formed in 1996 when Colin Linden, Stephen Fearing and Tom Wilson came together to record what was supposed to be a one-off tribute album to the great Canadian songwriter Willie P. Bennett.

Now into their second decade and with one JUNO award and several JUNO nominations under their belts, Blackie and the Rodeo Kings has evolved into one of the finest roots-oriented bands in North America and remains one of Canada’s greatest musical treasures.

Matt Andersen is one of Canada’s greatest blues performers, building fans with consistent worldwide touring, and winner of multiple Maple Blues Awards, two European Blues Awards, and a JUNO nomination for Roots & Traditional Album. Sam Palladio plays "Gunner Scott" on the hit TV show Nashville. He appears on the new Blackie and the Rodeo Kings album Kings and Kings.

Red Maple Blues Blues Dances

It is with great sadness that Red Maple Blues must announce that we must cancel our 'Four Years at Fleur' party that we had scheduled for this upcoming Wednesday, November 1 and all other dances at this venue. The Tea House has been sold and, unfortunately, the new owner is not interested in continuing our 'odd Wednesday' dances. We regret to announce this as we had really been looking forward our community celebration as we know you were.

RMB definitely plans to continue hosting dances and events and will be in touch to inform you about the new details. We're currently looking for a new home. Know of a venue, that you feel would be a good fit and may be receptive? Contact us via FB message or at ottawaredmapleblues@gmail.com

In the meantime, we'd like to remind you that we're hosting the late night at the OSDS Anniversary dance and would like to see you there!
Stay tuned and thanks so much for your understanding.

NAC Presents
Andrea Ramolo
National Arts Centre, 1 Elgin Street
Thursday, November 9 @ 8:30 pm; $25

Andrea Ramolo, one half of acclaimed Canadian folk-pop duo Scarlett Jane, has a new solo album, “Nuda” (Italian for naked). The album emerged out of a deep depression following a romantic breakup and a shift in her artistic path; but brought about a hugely positive metamorphosis, personally and creatively
.
Born in Toronto to Italian immigrants Andrea began her artistic life as a dancer and actress, but picked up the guitar in 2003 when her mom was going through breast cancer treatment “to heal myself and do something productive.” The rudimentary country-folk tracks ended up on her 2008 debut, “Thank You For The Ride”. She followed it up in 2011 with the Tim Thorney-produced “The Shadows and the Cracks”, which earned her a nomination at the Canadian Folk Music Awards.

She then formed Scarlett Jane with Cindy Doire and spent five years extensively touring behind two albums, 2012’s Stranger and 2015’s eponymous offering, earning accolades from press and fellow musicians across the country and two more CFMA nominations.

Ever since, she has been moving from strength to strength, releasing three critically acclaimed albums, touring widely, and racking up an impressive array of awards and accolades along the way.

Jesse Roper
Rainbow Bistro, 76 Murray Street
Wednesday, November 15, 8-11:30 pm;

Neat Coffee Shop, Burnstown ON
Friday, November 17, 8-11 pm; $20

Victoria BC's Jesse Roper is magnetic. With an explosive live show, the genuine quality and charisma of his versatile blues rooted soul, rock and country funk is as approachable as his charm. Since the release of his sophomore album “Red Bird” in 2015, Jesse Roper has been riding a surge of momentum that has kept the wheels on his faithful van turning as he becomes a major festival draw. Besides his success with touring, Jesse Roper was chosen to compete at the 2016 International Blues Challenge in Memphis TN and became a finalist favorite in BC’s Peak Performance Project. The nostalgic may appreciate his throw-back vibe akin to Stevie Ray Vaughan and vintage Texas blues, however, Jesse Roper's music remains current, his fiery energy captivating audiences while his knock-out live performance blows them away.

NAC Presents
Samantha Martin & Delta Sugar
National Arts Centre 4th Stage, 1 Elgin Street
Saturday, November 18 @ 8 pm; $25

Bubbling up from the cauldron of roots Americana music, Samantha Martin is an artist of extraordinary power, gravitas and deep-seated emotion. On first listen, one is immediately struck by the awesome presence and sheer magnitude of her other worldly voice.
As a vocalist, her roots lie squarely within the wellspring of powerful, strong woman’s voices embodied by such forbears as Marion Williams, Mavis Staples, Etta James, Tina Turner, Bettye LaVette, Lucinda Williams and, perhaps most closely, Bonnie Bramlett. As a songwriter, she draws on black gospel and southern soul with a hint of roots country and sixties pop while her lyrics suggest an old soul with wisdom beyond her years.

Her success is a combination of rare talent and hard work. Martin’s past includes a solo album (2008) and full-length roots-rock album with then-band ‘The Haggard’ (2012) as well as four Maple Blues Award nominations in 2016. Few artists are able to incorporate such broad genres successfully and present a cohesive sound all their own.

He has won 7 Maple Blues Awards, first place in the International Songwriting Competition and won CBC’s Great Canadian Blues Award from a poll of radio listeners. NAC Presents
Whitehorse
With Begonia
NAC Babs Asper Theatre, 1 Elgin Street
Tuesday, November 21 @ 7:30 pm

Whitehorse's brazen sonic breadth encompasses psychedelic surf, arid border rock, lo-fi ingenuity and icy ‘80s sparseness. New album, “Panther In The Dollhouse”, brings a twist to Whitehorse's studio approach with the addition of beats and bleeps from NYC hip-hop production duo Like Minds (Kanye West, Snoop Dogg). But while each new album sees the duo's sound evolve, the essence of Whitehorse's musical identity remains their dizzying guitar playing and vocal chemistry.

On “Panther In The Dollhouse”, Whitehorse delves deep into body politics and explores questions of consent, self-determination and, ultimately, freedom, largely from the perspective of women. Layers of retro psychedelic pop bubble up on ‘Nighthawks’, a song that explores the constructs of perpetrator and victim on the streets. “Panther In The Dollhouse” is packed with inventive sonic elements and neo-noir drama, full of flawed characters, foiled plans and anti-fairytales.

Friday, November 24 @ 7:30 pm; $25

Join jazz vocalist/trombonist Steve Berndt for a review of compositions to be recorded on his upcoming solo jazz album accompanied by three of Ottawa's best jazz musicians: Ken Kanwisher on bass, David Pontello on drums and guitarist Alex Moxon.

Also, Steve will perform “Blue Skies On Mars”, a song he wrote for a movie of the same title in which he appears in cameo as a fictional member of the Rat Pack and also as a disaffected clerk.

Steve's two bookend jazz vocal/piano albums have been on rotation on CBC's “Tonic” since release, “Déjà Vu” having been chosen as one of the Top 10 2012 jazz albums by The Ottawa Citizen's Peter Hum and “All Over Again” having been enthusiastically reviewed by Scott Yanow in the May 2016 Los Angeles Jazz Scene."

The Commotions
CD Release Party – “Volume II”
Babylon Nightclub, 317 Bank Street
Friday, December 1; $10 at the door

The Commotions have sidestepped the lightweight pop craze and taken the back roads straight into the hearts of their loyal followers, earning unwavering support from the true lovers of genuine, unsullied soul music. This 12-piece, sharply dressed, original throwback to the days of Motown is an evolved collection of Canada's top funk & jazz players.

This new CD is packed with amazing talent. Songs rarely heard, from the very first recordings all the way to indie artists who consciously push the envelope to the next generation sounds of the genre; some older releases will be spun - just because the album in old, doesn't mean it's forgotten, thus the "On The Side" part of the show's title.

BluesMobile Radio Archives
With Elwood Blues
From Elwood Blues:
Good news Blues Brethren and Soul Sisters! We've decided to make selected episodes from our vast archives of The BluesMobile Radio Hour available for your listening pleasure! And in order to appease the music licensing powers that be, we are moving to Mixcloud to host our archival releases.
(You may have to copy & paste this link if it defaults to mixcloud.com when you click it!)
Our first archival release is a celebration of Eric Clapton. This episode first aired in March 2015 on his 70th birthday. But do we really need an excuse? There is a lifetime of music to sample, from Cream to Blind Faith to Derek and the Dominoes, and more. Plus exclusive and rare Clapton sound bites from our interview archives!
