form to new frontiers with his rapacious, deep vocals, masterful harmonica
playing and song writing. As the unofficial poet laureate of Canadian blues,
words are his weapon of choice and when he sings, it is near impossible not to
listen and get lost within the songs, right alongside him and illustrating what
the influential British magazine Mojo described as his “wayward brilliance.”

continues to ride the wave created by their ferociously-sexy Blues-based sound.
Since the release of the gritty EP “Five Stiff Shots” in 2015, JDD has been
garnering so much attention in the Toronto music scene that they’ve been
invited to share stages with bands ‘Monster Truck’, ‘Big Wreck’ and ‘The
Sheepdogs’. The showmanship and musicality of their live show is an
electrifying experience not to be missed. This Indie powerhouse has already
been showcased in NXNE, CMW, Indie Week and many other major Canadian music
festivals to a great reception. Front-man Jim sings and guitar-slings with an
intensity that has been described as resembling “demonic possession”. The crack
of the drums creates a fat backbeat under a cloud of Hammond organ and silky
saxophone, in perfect contrast to the band’s fiercely entertaining energy on
stage. With the release of their slick new video and single ‘The Silence’
(Produced by The Tea Party’s Jeff Martin) JDD’s sound has been refined but not
restrained. True to their roots yet completely unique, Jim Dan Dee is set to

fun night to fundraise to build a roof for Kahe Primary School in East Africa. Kahe
Primary School is nestled in a poor neighbourhood of Kilimanjaro Region,
Tanzania. This area is vulnerable to drought and storms. In 2013, the school
lost its roof because of a storm. With your help we hope to build a strong
roof, so that 125 children can attend school. We have partnered with a
non-profit organization in Tanzania to help us manage the project on the ground
and ensure that 100% of the funds go to Kahe Primary School.

from 4 pm to 8 pm. Many of our supporters have expressed interest in
seeing the band when we aren't playing really late, so this matinee offers a
nice alternative.
If you have never been to the Atomic Rooster, it is an
excellent venue with a good sound man who knows how to match a band's tone to
the room. The Rooster has an interesting menu and plenty of draft beer
options. In addition, the room provides a full display of very cool
paintings by local artists. When I'm not gigging, the Rooster is my

The Kinsey brothers, vocalist/guitarist Donald, drummer/vocalist Ralph, and bassist/vocalist Kenneth, enjoyed enormous success throughout the ‘80s and ‘90s recording, and touring first with their late father, Lester “Big Daddy” Kinsey, as Big Daddy Kinsey and the Kinsey Report, and then on their own. The Kinseys arrived on the blues scene in 1985 with a winning formula, joining forces with their father to create a signature sound that mixed the traditional with the contemporary. Big Daddy’s rich baritone vocals, slide guitar and harmonica playing reflected his Mississippi Delta roots, while the younger Kinseys added reggae, rock, gospel and soul to the mix. Driven by Donald’s soulful vocals and impassioned guitar playing, and the tight, in-sync rhythm section of Ralph and Kenneth, the Kinsey Report created a singular sound that caught the attention of blues fans worldwide.
The frantic pace of those years, coupled with the loss of beloved family members, came to a head with Big Daddy’s passing in 2001. Although music was still in their lives, making music became less of a priority as the brothers entered a time of healing and reflection, a time of “trying to get life right,” as brother Ralph says. According to Donald, “we needed time to see where we were individually first, then as a family and as a group.”
Life’s lessons seem to have strengthened the family bond and the resolve to move forward both spiritually and musically. Musically, according to Kenneth, the timing is right. “I am very happy and pleased that we’re gonna be part of the blues landscape that is out there. It is a different landscape now, ever evolving and moving forward.” The Kinsey’s planted the progressive seeds for this landscape over some twenty years ago. How fitting is it that they are back, and again leading the way.
The 4 tunes on Standing (I’ll Be) bring the Kinseys firmly into the present. “Standing (I’ll Be)” the EP’s title track, is an original tune written by the brothers about triumph over adversity. For Donald, it is a song about “overcoming difficult obstacles with faith and the determination to move forward.” For Ralph, it is a song of victory. For the listener, it is an up tempo groove, a cautionary tale about succumbing to everyday temptation. “That’s It,” is a funky blues-rocker about a mean, mistreating woman, that the Kinseys have had percolating in the catalog since their Smoke and Steel Days, (their last recording on Alligator Records). “Nobody’s Fault,” is a traditional gospel tune, featuring Ralph on vocals, and Donald on Dobro and slide guitar. The Kinsey’s grandfather, Lester Kinsey, Sr. was the pastor of Gary's Chase Street Church of God in Christ for many years. Ralph, who was deeply moved by his grandmother’s love of spirituals, was enthusiastic about recording this song. He was inspired by the Nina Simone and Sister Rosetta Tharpe versions, and wanted to bring his interpretation to this classic gospel song. And then there is the track, “Boogie Diddlin’ an inspired instrumental that combines signature Bo Diddley and John Lee Hooker licks while also hearkening back to the brothers’ gospel roots, and to Big Daddy’s influence. The power chords on the bridge of the song come from gospel. As Donald explains, “Dad used to play the heavy bridge. That comes out of the sanctified church.”

Guitarist, singer and songwriter James Armstrong was born
to play the blues. His mother was a blues singer. His father played jazz
guitar. He formed his first band in the 7th grade and by the age of 17 he was
touring the country. In his twenties, James was the youngest guitar player to
play in Smokey Wilson’s legendary band. In the early ‘90s he was signed by
HighTone Records. Just as he was about to tour with his critically acclaimed 1st
album “Sleeping With A Stranger”, tragedy struck. The events surrounding a home
invasion left Armstrong without the use of his left hand and arm, including
permanent nerve damage which threatened to end his career forever. But thanks
to the support of friends, fans and the blues community, Armstrong came back
two years later with a second album, “Dark Night”.
What Armstrong lost in the tragedy he gained in “a whole
new respect for the music itself, the power in slow blues, how the silences
between the notes are as important as the notes”. Armstrong also turned his
efforts to perfecting his songwriting, vocal and slide guitar skills, all the
while developing his gift for turning hardship into song. The results were “Got
It Goin’ On” and the CD garnered two WC Handy award nominations for best blues
guitarist and for best song of the year with ‘Pennies and Picks’. With its new
grooves and surprises, the CD was praised by critics for its part in redefining
the blues and keeping the genre alive. In 2014, “Guitar Angels”, released on
Catfood Records, was awarded “Best Traditional Release” by Blues411.
Today he travels the world and continues to infuse his
voice and guitar playing with his unique personality and seasoned skills. Seen
live, he has a confident stage presence that combines grace with mischief. Few
blues artists know how to play the crowd as James can, shifting dynamics from a
whisper to a growl. James is currently touring in support of his latest release
on Catfood Records, “Blues Been Good To Me”.

Blackie and the Rodeo Kings, the Canadian music
“supergroup” made up of celebrated veteran blues, roots, rock and folk
musicians Stephen Fearing, Colin Linden and Tom Wilson, bring us the companion
piece to their 2011 collaboration album “Kings And Queens”. “Kings
And Kings” features some of the band’s best ‘guy’ friends from the world
of roots, blues and country. Each one of the guest artists is an accomplished
‘king’ in their realm of creative endeavors and in many cases absolute ‘king’
legends in the entertainment industry.
Blackie and the Rodeo Kings originally formed in 1996 when Colin Linden, Stephen Fearing and Tom Wilson came together to record what was supposed to be a one-off tribute album to the great Canadian songwriter Willie P. Bennett.

Now into their second decade and with one JUNO award and
several JUNO nominations under their belts, Blackie and the Rodeo Kings has
evolved into one of the finest roots-oriented bands in North America and
remains one of Canada’s greatest musical treasures.
Matt Andersen is one of Canada’s greatest blues
performers, building fans with consistent worldwide touring, and winner of
multiple Maple Blues Awards, two European Blues Awards, and a JUNO nomination
for Roots & Traditional Album. Sam Palladio plays "Gunner Scott"
on the hit TV show Nashville. He appears on the new Blackie and the Rodeo Kings
album Kings and Kings.

Andrea Ramolo, one half of acclaimed Canadian folk-pop
duo Scarlett Jane, has a new solo album, “Nuda” (Italian for naked).
The album emerged out of a deep depression following a romantic breakup and a
shift in her artistic path; but brought about a hugely positive metamorphosis,
personally and creatively
.
Born in Toronto to Italian immigrants Andrea began her
artistic life as a dancer and actress, but picked up the guitar in 2003 when
her mom was going through breast cancer treatment “to heal myself and do
something productive.” The rudimentary country-folk tracks ended up on her 2008
debut, “Thank You For The Ride”. She followed it up in 2011 with the Tim
Thorney-produced “The Shadows and the Cracks”, which earned her a
nomination at the Canadian Folk Music Awards.
She then formed Scarlett Jane with Cindy Doire and spent
five years extensively touring behind two albums, 2012’s Stranger and
2015’s eponymous offering, earning accolades from press and fellow musicians
across the country and two more CFMA nominations.

Bubbling up from the cauldron of roots Americana music,
Samantha Martin is an artist of extraordinary power, gravitas and deep-seated
emotion. On first listen, one is immediately struck by the awesome presence and
sheer magnitude of her other worldly voice.
As a vocalist, her roots lie squarely within the
wellspring of powerful, strong woman’s voices embodied by such forbears as
Marion Williams, Mavis Staples, Etta James, Tina Turner, Bettye LaVette,
Lucinda Williams and, perhaps most closely, Bonnie Bramlett. As a songwriter,
she draws on black gospel and southern soul with a hint of roots country and
sixties pop while her lyrics suggest an old soul with wisdom beyond her years.
Her success is a combination of rare talent and hard
work. Martin’s past includes a solo album (2008) and full-length roots-rock
album with then-band ‘The Haggard’ (2012) as well as four Maple Blues Award
nominations in 2016. Few artists are able to incorporate such broad genres
successfully and present a cohesive sound all their own.
