CD launce “Traces & Scars”

Our next guest on Viree Blues Moosehead, renown for his prized cinematographic musical atmospheres and as ‘side-man’ to the sadly missed Mr. Bob Walsh, is going back to his roots. Our friend, the harmonica virtuoso Guy Bélanger who was recently presented with the 2016 Andre-Gagnon award by the SPACQ (Societe professionnelle des auteurs et compositeurs du Quebec / Quebec’s Professional Composers Society) is renowned for his sensitivity, his generosity, his talent, an all-around true creator. After producing four solo albums, the harmonicist-singer keeps on building on this solid body of work with a new recording which puts forward his strengths for composing atmospheric and emotional music. He’s highly praised for keeping his virtuosity sincere.

An inspired, bright show dedicated to our friend, Bob Walsh (1947-2016) which will present the very best of the gentleman harmonicist and composer to whom the pleasure of performing has always been so evident for over 40 years, the launch of Guy Belanger’s latest opus, “Traces & Scars”, takes place Wednesday, April 12.

Chris Antonik
            CD release “Monarch”
The Rainbow Bistro, 76 Murray Street
Saturday, April 22 @ 9:30 pm
            (This show is an OBS member-only promotion;
Deadline – Monday, April 17 @ 6 pm, Ottawa time)

Following up his self-titled debut in 2010 and his sophomore release “Better For You” in 2013, (named Blues-Rock Album of the Year by Canada’s Blues Underground Network), “Monarch” closes a trilogy of self-expression. Traveling from an earnest desire to give more and make things better to a destination of peace and forgiveness, “Monarch” embodies an artist moving on with newfound energy, momentum and an understanding of the past. While forgiveness is free, there are most certainly tolls to pay along the journey. The songs on “Monarch” cover every mile of that emotional terrain as they ride through a rich and varied blues landscape punctuated by Antonik's searing guitar work.

Chris will be at the Rainbow for a CD release on Saturday, April 22.

Suzie Vinnick & Tony D in Concert
Batstone’s Northern Ramble, 45 Railway Avenue, Renfrew ON
Saturday, April 22 @ 8 pm; tickets $25

Two legendary Canadian musicians bring their unique blend of songs to the Northen Ramble stage - a powerhouse evening of music!

Tony and Suzie met in the early 1990s in Saskatoon and performed together for a few years in Ottawa. They released an album together in 1992 entitled "Dig Deep" - every once in a while the two friends get together and do some guitar playing.

SUZIE VINNICK
A Saskatoon native transplanted to the Niagara Region of Ontario, Suzie Vinnick is the proud owner of a gorgeous voice, prodigious guitar and bass chops, and an engagingly candid performance style.
Her career has seen triumph after triumph. Among her most recent successes: being nominated for a 2016 MapleBlues Award for Female Vocalist of the Year; achieving finalist status in the Solo/Duo Category at the 2013 International Blues Challenge in Memphis, TN; the 2012 CBC Saturday Night Blues Great Canadian Blues Award and the 2012 Sirius XM Canada Blues Artist of the Year. Suzie has won 10 Maple Blues Awards, 1 Canadian Folk Music Award for Contemporary Vocalist of the Year and is a 3X Juno Nominee.

TONY D
Tony D (Diteodoro), guitarist for Juno award-winning band MonkeyJunk has been laying it down for over thirty years. MonkeyJunk has amassed twenty Maple Blues awards and a Blues Music Award, (formerly known as The Handy Awards). At the age of thirteen Tony began his musical journey on the guitar. Learning mostly in the blues, rock jazz stylings. From Muddy Waters, to Jimi Hendrix to Jimmy Page, to Albert King to Wes Montgomery and all the points in between. At the age of nineteen, Tony was given the opportunity to play rhythm guitar, for three days, for the legendary Buddy Guy. Years later, he had the prestigious opening slot for the late great Stevie Ray Vaughan at Ottawa’s NAC. In the early ‘90s having taken a trip to Europe and secured a record deal out of Holland, Tony became one of the first Canadian blue musician to tour Europe.
The Blues and anything that falls under that umbrella being his first love, Tony D has also explored various forms of music. Flamenco became another obsession and after studying the form for two years he joined a troupe which made him write pseudo flamenco and Spanish rhythm instrumentals which he still plays today in his solo shows.
From The delta to the desert it all comes from places of devotion … musical devotion. “Basically, I’m like Lightnin’ Hopkins with an electric guitar”

Reserved seating for dinner and show Tickets $10-$25, in advance at:

This show includes two sets. Opening with The Commotions, and headlined by Rebecca Noelle:
"I’m really excited to be performing where I grew up. Many of my songs were born, arranged and rehearsed in Barrhaven, but we’ve never performed there. "A Homecoming", if you will. It will be a night to remember in an elegant and comfortable setting. I hope you will be part of this rare double-header. This show will be filmed--striving for the “ultimate take,” all stories will be told, all risks will be taken, and all moments will be magical! "

This 12-piece, sharply dressed, original throwback to the days of Motown is an evolved collection of Canada's top funk & jazz players. This band originally united to provide a Canadian contingent to Funk Brother's (Motown Records) lead vocalist Delbert Nelson as "Delbert & The Commotions". The band's Musical Director, Brian Asselin honed his skills playing with acts such as The Four Tops and The Temptations, and his original music has been featured on HBO and ABC in the U.S. The Commotions are currently working with Canadian soul hero Jarvis Church of The Philosopher Kings, Juno Award winner Steve Marriner of Monkey Junk, Steve Berndt of the Jivewires, Juno-Nominated saxophonist Petr Cancura, and jazz hero Mark Ferguson. Anthony Gomes, #1 Billboard Blues Artist, is a triple threat force as a guitarist, vocalist and songwriter. This, along with his high-energy shows and dynamic stage presence, make him one of the top draws on the Rock/Blues circuit today.

Gomes has been creating virtuosic, burning blues since his recorded debut in 1998 and is showing no signs of stopping by releasing his most successful album to date. Electric Field Holler, riff-laden and his most rock influenced album yet, has been nominated for Blues Album of the Year and already made several ‘Best Of’ Lists.

Not only has he shared the stage with the likes of B.B. King and Buddy Guy, he also founded the Music is the Medicine Foundation in 2010 a non-profit organization dedicated to changing the lives of others through the healing power of music. Through private donations and grants, the foundation has funded song writing scholarships, offered music education programs, and donated musical instruments to those in need. NPR from Canton NY
For those who live south of the city, OBS member Bob Cavan notes that the National Public Radio (NPR) radio signal at 89.5 FM in Canton NY comes in pretty strong in Manotick. Bob recommends two shows in particular. Bob says “The Blue Note” Tuesdays 3 pm-5 pm, and “The Radio Bob Show” Wednesdays 3 pm-5 pm are both excellent shows – blues, ‘50s & ‘60s, rock & roll, R&B.

Unsung and On The Side
With Carolyn Fe
Tuesdays, 7-9 pm
Re-broadcast Saturday 10 am – noon & Sunday 2-4 pm (all times EST)
It’s all about the Blues, Jazz and its derivatives from around the globe and just around the corner. Songs rarely heard, from the very first recordings all the way to indie artists who consciously push the envelope to the next generation sounds of the genre; some older releases will be spun - just because the album in old, doesn't mean it's forgotten, thus the "On The Side" part of the show's title.
