“Radio Silence” was recorded in Ottawa at Audio Valley studios and is the perfect blend of their beautiful signature harmonies and the classic Cooper Brothers sound. The album features twelve new, original songs written by Dick Cooper, including ‘Smuggler’s Moon’, ‘Straight Outta No Where’, ‘Gone Are The Days’ and is self-produced by the Cooper Brothers. The title track and ‘Straight Out Of Nowhere’ feature Blue Rodeo guitarist and the band’s previous producer, Colin Cripps (Jim Cuddy/Kathleen Edwards) and East Coast Music Award winner and sideman to the stars, Ray Legere (The Band/Rita McNeil) plays fiddle and mandolin on the album, including ‘End Of The Day’. Maria Hawkins
Log Drive Café, 950 Bank Street
The Glebe Centre Community Programs at Abbotsford House
(the old stone house across from Lansdowne)
Friday, April 28; 7:30 – 9:00 pm (doors open at 7); $10 at the door*
*If this is a hardship for you, offer what you can and we will take it.

Maria Hawkins is well known for her open generosity and tireless unpaid efforts on behalf of folks who are not so privileged in this city, singing for and with ALL kinds of people over the years. The legendary Blues Lady started Blues in the Schools, as well as responding to countless appeals from those in the social services putting on events and educational programs. For this kind of work Maria has won many honours, including a Diamond Jubilee medal from the Queen. She is currently one of Ottawa Life Magazine’s Top 25 Ottawans.
But what is not always stressed enough is that she is such a wonderful singer. She is the best blues singer in town and one of the best in Canada. She has the ability to bring just the right energy to a song, whether it demands light and breezy or low down and gritty. And she always brings the listeners in.

For her Log Drive Café performance, Maria is taking very seriously our singalong mandate, bringing lyrics to share with the audience for some of the songs. The show will feature old gospel songs such as ‘I’ll Fly Away’ and ‘Down to the River to Pray’, as well as classic blues like ‘Stormy Monday’ and ‘Flip Flop and Fly’. She will also bring a few originals to the mix. We are very lucky Maria’s generous spirit extends to a performance at the Log Drive Café and invite you to get there early as it will likely be packed.

The Log Drive Café is a traditional music venue, held on occasional Friday evenings, featuring local and visiting folk singers and musicians in a coffee-house setting, in which the audience is welcome to sing along.
Tea, coffee, cold drinks and baked goods are available.
Abbotsford House is a wheelchair accessible recreation centre focused on older adults; however, the Log Drive Café is an all-ages event.
If it is wet out, please bring indoor shoes to protect the floor.

FOLKRUM--Ottawa Community Music Venue Presents:
An Evening of Soul with Rebecca Noelle
            With special guest: The Commotions
Greenfield’s Gastro Public House, 900 Greenbank Road
Friday, May 19 @ 8 pm; Dinner from 5 pm, Show starts at 8 pm
Reserved seating for dinner and show Tickets $10-$25, in advance at:

This show includes two sets. Opening with The Commotions, and headlined by Rebecca Noelle:
"I’m really excited to be performing where I grew up. Many of my songs were born, arranged and rehearsed in Barrhaven, but we’ve never performed there. "A Homecoming", if you will. It will be a night to remember in an elegant and comfortable setting. I hope you will be part of this rare double-header. This show will be filmed--striving for the “ultimate take,” all stories will be told, all risks will be taken, and all moments will be magical! "

The Commotions have sidestepped the lightweight pop craze and taken the backroads straight into the hearts of their loyal followers, earning unwavering support from the true lovers of genuine, unsullied soul music. This 12-piece, sharply dressed, original throwback to the days of Motown is an evolved collection of Canada's top funk & jazz players. This band originally united to provide a Canadian contingent to Funk Brother's (Motown Records) lead vocalist Delbert Nelson as "Delbert & The Commotions". The band's Musical Director, Brian Asselin honed his skills playing with acts such as The Four Tops and The Temptations, and his original music has been featured on HBO and ABC in the U.S. The Commotions are currently working with Canadian soul hero Jarvis Church of The Philosopher Kings, Juno Award winner Steve Marriner of Monkey Junk, Steve Berndt of the Jivewires, Juno-Nominated saxophonist Petr Cancura, and jazz hero Mark Ferguson. The band features vocalists Jeff Rogers (Silver Creek and The Cooper Brothers) and Rebecca Noelle (The PepTides, Rumours, and David Gogo.) With a sonically monumental performance and an energizing visual display, The Commotions command every room they play, drawing in audiences with their sizzling brass section, thumping backbeat, and sensitive ballads.

Sometimes you just have to do what you love, and the Paul DesLauriers Band has been very busy doing just that. The trio is made up of virtuoso guitarist and singer Paul DesLauriers and masterful rhythm section Greg Morency on bass and Sam Harrisson on drums. At this year’s Maple Blues Awards, the members of the rhythm section each picked up awards as Bassist and Drummer of the Year. It was Morency’s second win in three years, while Harrisson got the nod for the first time. The band also took home trophies in the Electric Act of the Year as well as Entertainer of the Year categories. The band has been riding a growing wave of success since the fall of 2015 when it clinched a win at the Montreal Blues Society hosted Quebec to Memphis contest. This secured them a slot at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis in 2016, where they impressed, finishing 2nd worldwide out of a field of 119 competing bands.

Following up on the success of their self-titled album from 2014, The Paul DesLauriers Band’s latest release “Relentless” is “a genuine blues-rock escapade featuring 10 new songs encompassing their most original and powerful work to date”.

Anthony Gomes, #1 Billboard Blues Artist, is a triple threat force as a guitarist, vocalist and songwriter. This, along with his high-energy shows and dynamic stage presence, make him one of the top draws on the Rock/Blues circuit today.

Gomes has been creating virtuosic, burning blues since his recorded debut in 1998 and is showing no signs of stopping by releasing his most successful album to date. Electric Field Holler, riff-laden and his most rock influenced album yet, has been nominated for Blues Album of the Year and already made several ‘Best Of’ Lists.

Anthony Gomes has headlined concerts in 17 countries and has had the honor of sharing the stage with B.B. King, Buddy Guy, Robert Plant, Joe Bonamassa, Heart, Alice Cooper, Jonny Lang and Kenny Wayne Shepherd.

Not only has he shared the stage with the likes of B.B. King and Buddy Guy, he also founded the Music is the Medicine Foundation in 2010 a non-profit organization dedicated to changing the lives of others through the healing power of music. Through private donations and grants, the foundation has funded song writing scholarships, offered music education programs, and donated musical instruments to those in need. Hosted by Bernard Stepien, Ron Steeds, Allan Wigney, Jean-Michel Labatut and Aidian Thomas, ‘In A Mellow Tone’ introduces listeners to the entire history of jazz, from its beginnings to the latest innovations. Every program has a focus; on a musician, a city, a festival, an instrument, a record label or on recent releases. The hosts draw on their large personal CD and LP collections to supplement CKCU's extensive resources.

NPR from Canton NY
For those who live south of the city, OBS member Bob Cavan notes that the National Public Radio (NPR) radio signal at 89.5 FM in Canton NY comes in pretty strong in Manotick. Bob recommends two shows in particular. Bob says “The Blue Note” Tuesdays 3 pm-5 pm, and “The Radio Bob Show” Wednesdays 3 pm-5 pm are both excellent shows – blues, ‘50s & ‘60s, rock & roll, R&B.

Unsung and On The Side
With Carolyn Fe
Tuesdays, 7-9 pm
Re-broadcast Saturday 10 am – noon & Sunday 2-4 pm (all times EST)
It’s all about the Blues, Jazz and its derivatives from around the globe and just around the corner. Songs rarely heard, from the very first recordings all the way to indie artists who consciously push the envelope to the next generation sounds of the genre; some older releases will be spun - just because the album in old, doesn't mean it's forgotten, thus the "On The Side" part of the show's title.
