Angelique Francis has been named one of the top emerging
female Blues artists in the country. At 17 years of age she has already
appeared at prestigious festivals like Ottawa Bluesfest, the Montreal
International Jazz Festival and the Tremblant Blues Festival and represented
the Toronto Blues Society at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis. She
not only has a fabulous voice and tremendous feel for a song, she also writes
her own songs and plays multiple instruments including guitar, upgright bass
and harmonica. Ben Racine originally hails from Gatineau but now lives in
Montreal. He and his very talented band were just nominated for the Maple Blues
Award for Best New Artists this year. They play Soul Blues like the great
R&B artists from the ‘60s – Junior Walker, Stevie Wonder and Clarence
Carter. Together these two represent the very best in great young Canadian
Blues talent. Their first visit to BOTR.

The Ramblin' Valley Band has been cooking up flavourful
jams mixing blues, country, bluegrass and rock and roll into one sweet spread.
For over 2 years the band has been sharing their talents with Ottawa music
lovers, and have been received with dancing, singing, hootin' and hollering all
along the way. When you watch the RVB you're going to see a versatile band that
can jump genres seamlessly, trade instruments with ease, and works together to
highlight each member as a part in a mighty groovin' machine.

The LH Express is a fresh and funky band with a sound drenched in poignant lyrics and blistering band interplay. On their new album "Tearing Up The Rails" (released in 2016), the band shows a deep connection to the roots of the blues tradition, with gritty, passionate high energy material, some of which was recorded at legendary Sun Studios in Memphis TN.

singer-songwriter Colin James has announced cross Canada tour dates in support

Blue Highways pays tribute to some of the singer/guitarist’s

King, Jr. Wells & Buddy Guy, Peter Green, Robert Johnson and William
Bell to name a few. In the spring of 2015 Colin wrapped up his Hearts on
Fire tour. After a couple of months of straight touring, Colin was loving
playing with the band and really happy with the sound they had created on
stage. What better time to make a record? Especially the record Colin
had been itching to make for years – a collection of some of his favourite
blues tracks. In less than a week Colin and his touring band went into The
Warehouse Studios in Vancouver and in just 2 days, “Blue Highways” was

The New Orleans blues & Cajun sensation. Leyla McCalla’s new album “A Day For The Hunter, A Day For The Prey” takes its title from a book of the same name that the singer and cellist read while pregnant with her first daughter. Taking its title in turn from a Haitian proverb, the book analyzes the intersection of politics, power and music in Haiti. McCalla, a former member of The Carolina Chocolate Drops, who now calls New Orleans home, was struck by how political crisis can create a scene for music to be born. Through deeply felt originals and interpretations of traditional songs from Creole, Cajun, Haitian, American folk and jazz canons, the album depicts a diverse American experience and Leyla’s struggles with and acceptance of her own identity. “A Day For The Hunter, A Day For The Prey” includes guests Rhiannon Giddens (a bandmate in the Carolina Chocolate Drops), guitarist Marc Ribot, fiddler Louis Michot of Lost Bayou Ramblers and more. The work of Ella Jenkins, Manno Charlemagne, Abner Jay, creole fiddlers Canray Fontenot and Bebe Carriere have all been interpreted here by Leyla and her band, whose members include her husband, Daniel Tremblay, and Free Feral. They are joined by Jason Jurzak on bass and sousaphone. The album was recorded at Dockside Studios in Maurice, LA. Leyla will tour this spring and summer and perform at The Jazz & Heritage Festival in New Orleans and Festival International de Louisiane in Lafayette. She is also a part of the Swimming In Dark Waters tour featuring Rhiannon Giddens and Bhi Bhiman that is currently on the road. In a rave for Leyla's 2013 solo debut, the New York Times said: "Her voice is disarmingly natural, and her settings are elegantly succinct...her magnificently transparent music holds

Following up on the success of their self-titled album from 2014, the Paul DesLauriers Band returns with the aptly titled “Relentless”, a genuine blues-rock escapade featuring 10 new songs encompassing their most original and powerful work to date. Relentless indeed if you consider the pace at which the band has been working for the last two years with touring, writing and recording. The awards they keep racking up only confirm that hard work pays off. Adding to their multiple Maple Blues and Lys Blues awards and nominations they had a number one album on the iTunes Canada Blues Chart and in January 2016 they took home 2nd Place among 119 competing bands from around the world at the 32nd annual International Blues Challenge, held by the Blues Foundation in Memphis. Hot on the heels of that win they returned to Montreal to complete writing and recording Relentless and the result captures the very essence of The Paul DesLauriers Band.
A true collaborative effort on every front, singer-guitarist Paul DesLauriers, bassist Greg Morency and drummer Sam Harrisson approached this recording the same way they have in the past, three men playing together in the same room, capturing performances live off the floor; and this time they applied that philosophy to the whole creative process, writing and arranging all the music together from the ground up. Lyrics were penned by DesLauriers and long-time collaborator Alec McElcheran. Each member a virtuoso in his own right, what sets this power trio apart is their chemistry and uncanny musical interaction. Through the driving riffs on “Stewtro Rock (Just Got Back)” and “Ten Feet Tall”, the swampy grooves of “I’m Your Man” and “Still Under My Skin” and the heavy blues of “If I Still Had You”, you sense the power, the intention and most of all the unique sound these three have created. Heaviness is interspersed with funk, fun and cheeky double-entendre in tracks like “Gonna Make You Move (Part 1)” and “We Just Might”, the complexities of relationships and a life of chasing the muse are discussed candidly in numbers such as “Wipes Away Your Sin” and “Up In The Air”. Through every track, the personalities shine through, but what is most striking is the unity and the maturity radiating from this trio at the top of their game.
If the last album, 2014’s award-winning self-titled release, solidified the band’s stance in the Canadian blues scene, this album as well as their remarkable achievements over the last two years cements their position as one of the top Canadian blues-rock acts and will maximize their influence on the international stage.

“Mysticssippi” blues man Harry Manx has been called an
“essential link” between the music of East and West, creating musical short
stories that wed the tradition of the Blues with the depth of classical Indian
ragas. He has created a unique sound that is hard to forget and deliciously
addictive to listen to. Harry forged his distinctive style by studying at the
feet of the masters, first as a sound man in the blues clubs of Toronto during
his formative years and then under a rigorous tutelage with Vishwa Mohan Bhatt
in India. Bhatt is the inventor of the 20-stringed Mohan Veena, which has
become Harry’s signature instrument.
Manx is a prolific artist, releasing 12 albums in a
12-year span with no signs of stopping. He has received seven Maple Blues Awards,
six Juno nominations, the Canadian Folk Music Award in 2005 for Best Solo
Artist and won CBC Radio’s “Great Canadian Blues Award” in 2007.

Cavan notes that the National Public Radio (NPR) radio signal at 89.5 FM in
Canton NY comes in pretty strong in Manotick. Bob recommends two shows in
particular. Bob says “The Blue Note” Tuesdays 3 pm-5 pm, and “The Radio
Bob Show” Wednesdays 3 pm-5 pm are both excellent shows – blues, ‘50s
& ‘60s, rock & roll, R&B.
