MEGAPHONO presents
Ramblin Valley Band, Catriona Sturton
and the Lucas Haneman Express
Irene’s Pub, 885 Bank Street
Friday, February 3; $12 at the door, free with MEGAPHONO wristband

The Ramblin' Valley Band has been cooking up flavourful jams mixing blues, country, bluegrass and rock and roll into one sweet spread. For over 2 years the band has been sharing their talents with Ottawa music lovers, and have been received with dancing, singing, hootin' and hollering all along the way. When you watch the RVB you're going to see a versatile band that can jump genres seamlessly, trade instruments with ease, and works together to highlight each member as a part in a mighty groovin' machine.

Sings like an angel, plays like a beast. Rock and roll lover of Heavenly and the heaviest blues. After learning to file harmonica reeds in a back alley, Catriona toured Canada as the bassist for Halifax teen-rockers, Plumtree (who inspired the cult-favourite book and movie, Scott Pilgrim, with their song of the same name. She’s toured with Italian harmonica wizards, played in a Hiroshima-based garage rock band, was a guest on The Price is Right, and has been to more places in remote Canada than most people ever get to.

The Lucas Haneman Express is a soulful, fun filled and electrifying musical ride. The group's frontman, Lucas Haneman, has long been widely regarded for his distinctive guitar work. Along with Jeff Asselin (drums), Martin Newman (bass/backing vocals) and Megan Laurence (backing vocals), he has found his true means of self-expression. The LH Express is a fresh and funky band with a sound drenched in poignant lyrics and blistering band interplay. On their new album "Tearing Up The Rails" (released in 2016), the band shows a deep connection to the roots of the blues tradition, with gritty, passionate high energy material, some of which was recorded at legendary Sun Studios in Memphis TN.

SPECIAL EVENTS COMING SOON
****************************
Colin James
            Opening – MonkeyJunk
NAC Southam Hall, 1 Elgin Street
Tuesday, February 7 @ 8 pm; tickets starting at $53.50
(This show is an OBS member-only promotion!)

Critically acclaimed, Juno Award winning singer-songwriter Colin James has announced cross Canada tour dates in support of his new album “Blue Highways” (released via True North Records).
Blue Highways pays tribute to some of the singer/guitarist’s long time blues idols including Howlin’ Wolf, Jimmy Reed, Freddie King, Jr. Wells & Buddy Guy, Peter Green, Robert Johnson and William Bell to name a few. In the spring of 2015 Colin wrapped up his Hearts on Fire tour. After a couple of months of straight touring, Colin was loving playing with the band and really happy with the sound they had created on stage. What better time to make a record? Especially the record Colin had been itching to make for years – a collection of some of his favourite blues tracks. In less than a week Colin and his touring band went into The Warehouse Studios in Vancouver and in just 2 days, “Blue Highways” was born.

Leyla McCalla Band
Rainbow Bistro, 76 Murray Street
Friday, February 10

The New Orleans blues & Cajun sensation. Leyla McCalla’s new album “A Day For The Hunter, A Day For The Prey” takes its title from a book of the same name that the singer and cellist read while pregnant with her first daughter. Taking its title in turn from a Haitian proverb, the book analyzes the intersection of politics, power and music in Haiti. McCalla, a former member of The Carolina Chocolate Drops, who now calls New Orleans home, was struck by how political crisis can create a scene for music to be born. Through deeply felt originals and interpretations of traditional songs from Creole, Cajun, Haitian, American folk and jazz canons, the album depicts a diverse American experience and Leyla’s struggles with and acceptance of her own identity. “A Day For The Hunter, A Day For The Prey” includes guests Rhiannon Giddens (a bandmate in the Carolina Chocolate Drops), guitarist Marc Ribot, fiddler Louis Michot of Lost Bayou Ramblers and more. The work of Ella Jenkins, Manno Charlemagne, Abner Jay, creole fiddlers Canray Fontenot and Bebe Carriere have all been interpreted here by Leyla and her band, whose members include her husband, Daniel Tremblay, and Free Feral. They are joined by Jason Jurzak on bass and sousaphone. The album was recorded at Dockside Studios in Maurice, LA. Leyla will tour this spring and summer and perform at The Jazz & Heritage Festival in New Orleans and Festival International de Louisiane in Lafayette. She is also a part of the Swimming In Dark Waters tour featuring Rhiannon Giddens and Bhi Bhiman that is currently on the road. In a rave for Leyla's 2013 solo debut, the New York Times said: "Her voice is disarmingly natural, and her settings are elegantly succinct...her magnificently transparent music holds
tidings of family, memory, solitude and the inexorability of time: weighty thoughts handled with the lightest touch imaginable." Says Pitchfork, “Her playing suggests a perpetual spring…her voice is a velvety purr that’s both wise and bright.”

Jordan Officer
NAC Studio, 1 Elgin Street
Thursday, February 16 @ 8 pm; $33
(This show is an OBS member-only promotion!)

Jordan Officer keeps seducing the audience on both sides of the Atlantic, accompanied by two musicians. His album “Blue Skies” presents the sum total of everything that defines this artist, both intellectually and instinctively. According to Jordan, “This album expresses all the shades of all the colours that inhabit my soul. Blues for sure, but also the jazz of my roots, country music, rock ’n’ roll. My instrument and my voice – nothing is taken for granted. Everything is there. This was not my original plan, but “Blue Skies” is everything that I am. For the first time ever.”

Paul DesLauriers Band
Rainbow Bistro, 76 Murray Street
Friday, February 17

Following up on the success of their self-titled album from 2014, the Paul DesLauriers Band returns with the aptly titled “Relentless”, a genuine blues-rock escapade featuring 10 new songs encompassing their most original and powerful work to date. Relentless indeed if you consider the pace at which the band has been working for the last two years with touring, writing and recording. The awards they keep racking up only confirm that hard work pays off. Adding to their multiple Maple Blues and Lys Blues awards and nominations they had a number one album on the iTunes Canada Blues Chart and in January 2016 they took home 2nd Place among 119 competing bands from around the world at the 32nd annual International Blues Challenge, held by the Blues Foundation in Memphis. Hot on the heels of that win they returned to Montreal to complete writing and recording Relentless and the result captures the very essence of The Paul DesLauriers Band.

A true collaborative effort on every front, singer-guitarist Paul DesLauriers, bassist Greg Morency and drummer Sam Harrisson approached this recording the same way they have in the past, three men playing together in the same room, capturing performances live off the floor; and this time they applied that philosophy to the whole creative process, writing and arranging all the music together from the ground up. Lyrics were penned by DesLauriers and long-time collaborator Alec McElcheran. Each member a virtuoso in his own right, what sets this power trio apart is their chemistry and uncanny musical interaction. Through the driving riffs on “Stewtro Rock (Just Got Back)” and “Ten Feet Tall”, the swampy grooves of “I’m Your Man” and “Still Under My Skin” and the heavy blues of “If I Still Had You”, you sense the power, the intention and most of all the unique sound these three have created. Heaviness is interspersed with funk, fun and cheeky double-entendre in tracks like “Gonna Make You Move (Part 1)” and “We Just Might”, the complexities of relationships and a life of chasing the muse are discussed candidly in numbers such as “Wipes Away Your Sin” and “Up In The Air”. Through every track, the personalities shine through, but what is most striking is the unity and the maturity radiating from this trio at the top of their game.
If the last album, 2014’s award-winning self-titled release, solidified the band’s stance in the Canadian blues scene, this album as well as their remarkable achievements over the last two years cements their position as one of the top Canadian blues-rock acts and will maximize their influence on the international stage.

Harry Manx
NAC Theatre, 1 Elgin Street
Saturday, February 18 @ 7:30 pm; $39
(This show is an OBS member-only promotion!)

“Mysticssippi” blues man Harry Manx has been called an “essential link” between the music of East and West, creating musical short stories that wed the tradition of the Blues with the depth of classical Indian ragas. He has created a unique sound that is hard to forget and deliciously addictive to listen to. Harry forged his distinctive style by studying at the feet of the masters, first as a sound man in the blues clubs of Toronto during his formative years and then under a rigorous tutelage with Vishwa Mohan Bhatt in India. Bhatt is the inventor of the 20-stringed Mohan Veena, which has become Harry’s signature instrument.

Manx is a prolific artist, releasing 12 albums in a 12-year span with no signs of stopping. He has received seven Maple Blues Awards, six Juno nominations, the Canadian Folk Music Award in 2005 for Best Solo Artist and won CBC Radio’s “Great Canadian Blues Award” in 2007.

Ascension Jazz Series:
Betty Ann Bryanton & Pierre Monfils
Church of the Ascension, 253 Echo Drive
Saturday, January 29; 7-9 pm; adults $12, students $7, children under 12 $5; (plus fees)

In January, vocalist Betty Ann Bryanton brightens a cold winter's night. Backed by guitarist Pierre Monfils, she’ll sing a range of timeless standards from the great American songbook. Expect to hear music from the likes of George Gershwin and Billie Holiday, along with rare gems and contemporary classics. Enjoy complimentary coffee or tea, or purchase a glass of wine or craft beer. Proceeds benefit the church music fund.

Betty Ann Bryanton has been hooked on jazz since 2006. She was drawn in by the familiar melodies of the Great American Songbook - songs by Harold Arlen, Irving Berlin, Hoagy Carmichael performed by Ella Fitzgerald, Ray Charles, Frank Sinatra.... She surprised herself that she already knew many of these songs (many of them from Broadway musicals with which she was already familiar) and loved their story-telling beautiful melodies.
Since then, she been concentrating almost exclusively on vocal jazz. She studies jazz voice with Christine Duncan in Toronto and performs in Ottawa-Gatineau with many excellent musicians (pianists Miguel de Armas, Yves Laroche, David Miller; guitarists Nathan Corr, Tim Bedner, and Pierre Monfils; and more). She is known for her charismatic stage presence and her clear, warm, emotive voice. She enjoys performing familiar swing tunes but has come to really love the Latin bossa novas, as well.

Busy musician Pierre Monfils, originally from Windsor, Ontario, spent most of his youth in Ottawa. His early love of music developed into a career teaching music and drama in Ontario schools. Now retired from teaching, Pierre devotes most of his free time to his first passion – the guitar. Pierre accompanies many top area vocalists on a frequent basis.

Colin James
            Opening – MonkeyJunk
NAC Southam Hall, 1 Elgin Street
Tuesday, February 7 @ 8 pm; tickets starting at $53.50
