up on the success of their self-titled album from 2014, The Paul DesLauriers
Band returns with the aptly titled “Relentless”, a genuine blues-rock escapade
featuring 10 new songs encompassing their most original and powerful work to
date. Relentless indeed if you consider the pace at which the band has been
working for the last two years with touring, writing and recording. The awards
they keep racking up only confirm that hard work pays off. Adding to their
multiple Maple Blues and Lys Blues awards and nominations they had a number one
album on the iTunes Canada Blues Chart and in January 2016 they took home 2nd
Place among 119 competing bands from around the world at the 32nd annual
International Blues Challenge, held by the Blues Foundation in Memphis. Hot on
the heels of that win they returned to Montreal to complete writing and
recording Relentless and the result captures the very essence of The Paul
DesLauriers Band.

Jackson is the sort of openhearted, friendly guy who builds an instant rapport
with audiences. He came to Downchild as their singer 24 years ago after a long
career with a number of top Canadian bands. An Award-winning musician, who
rates Big Joe Turner, Otis Redding and Junior Wells as major influences,
Jackson is also is an excellent songwriter and harmonica player.
With
Downchild he has been nominated for 4 JUNOS and has been nominated 7 times and
won the Maple Blues Award, Male Vocalist of the Year twice. He was also
honoured in 2002 with the Toronto Blues Society’s prestigious Blues With a

to present its third Women’s Voices concert of 2016 entitled The Roots of Pop
Music, featuring Angelique Francis in an evening of inspired blues, soul, R&B,
and jazz from the next generation of young women musicians.
At just 18 years old, Ottawa singer Angelique Francis is
an exceptional interpreter of roots music, wowing international audiences with
her powerful voice and stage presence.
A multi-instrumentalist and songwriter with talent to
burn, Angelique is rising through the ranks of the Canadian blues scene at warp
speed and winning recognition and awards at major music festivals across the
country (including, of course, the Ottawa BluesFest).
The Roots of Pop Music presents Angelique as a leader in
the trend of young women exploring roots music and reaching audiences young and
old with their fresh interpretations of blues, soul, R&B, jazz, and beyond
– music that continues to inspire and enrich popular music right through to
today.
The concert opens with a set by 14 year-old chanteuse
Isabella Nicole, another gifted young Ottawa singer with BluesFest appearances

Bubbling up from the cauldron of roots Americana music,
Samantha Martin is an artist of extraordinary power, gravitas and deep-seated
emotion. On first listen, one is immediately struck by the awesome presence and
sheer magnitude of her other worldly voice. Cigarette-ravaged and
whiskey-soaked in the extreme, Martin’s pipes are capable of conveying an
infinite range of emotions, bringing one to tears in one instance and in the
next uplifting one’s soul with an empowered declaration of hope, faith and desire.
Released in February 2015, “Send The Nightingale”
represents a quantum leap for both Martin and her group. As a vocalist her
roots lie squarely within the wellspring of powerful, strong woman’s voices
embodied by such forbears as Marion Williams, Mavis Staples, Etta James, Tina
Turner, Bettye LaVette, Lucinda Williams and, perhaps most closely, Bonnie
Bramlett. As a songwriter, she draws on black gospel and southern soul with a
hint of roots country and sixties pop while her lyrics suggest an old soul with
wisdom beyond her years.
While Martin is a powerhouse unto herself, “Send the
Nightingale” is not the work of a single talent. In combination with what she
likes to term her “co-vocalists,” Sherie Marshall and Stacie Tabb, the vocal
blend Delta Sugar produces is pure, unadulterated gospel-tinged,
neuron-tingling magic where the sum is even richer than the already
soul-melting parts. Add to that guitarist Mikey McCallum’s Delta-inspired and
mystery-inflected guitar lines and Samantha Martin and Delta Sugar emerge as
one of the most powerful new artists to emerge on the roots music scene in many
a year.

adding harmonica like a plot twist. He sings! He rhymes! He
beatboxes! He's a multi-instrumentalist!
It probably goes without saying that, with his skills as
a poet, he's also an amazing songwriter and his new album “All The Angels
Didn’t Scare Me”, perhaps more than any other, is a major showcase for his
songwriting chops. This was about going back to the traditions of music being a
form of journalism for the poor and working classes. It's a contemporary
singer-songwriter album, touching on everything from poverty, brokenness and
gentrification to Hollywood archetypes and casual relationships -- and it's backed
at times by a massive-yet-accessible wall of sound courtesy of Ben Mink and
Steve Dawson.

Shawn Holt is the son of Blues Legend Magic Slim. The
high energy, hard-driving sound of The Teardrops is still alive and well and if

a chip off the old block, fronting his dad's band.
Shawn started playing the blues at the age of 17, when he
went on the road with this father and Slim's brother, Uncle Nick Holt and The
Teardrops. Shortly after that tour with his father, Shawn realized his genetic
destiny (all the Holt's are talented musicians) and formed his own band. He has
been watching, learning and playing blues ever since.

more time in support of the Ottawa Foodbank, The Bushpilots are again hosting a
tribute to The Band's Last Waltz, perhaps the greatest concert film in history,
this time to honour the 40th anniversary of this legendary
event. Directed by Martin Scorsese, The Last Waltz was a document of The
Band's final concert at San Francisco's Winterland ballroom on Thanksgiving
Day, November 25, 1976. Joining The Band was an all-star line-up of special
guests including Bob Dylan, Paul Butterfield, Eric Clapton, Joni Mitchell, Neil
Young, Muddy Waters, Dr. John, and many more of the icons who created and
breathed American music.
The
Bushpilots were blessed to be joined by a Who's Who of Ottawa talent in 2013
and 2014 performing before an SRO crowd at the Rainbow Bistro, and we promise
this year will be the biggest and baddest yet. Joining the BPs will be, as
always, The Cripple Creek Horns.

excellent musicians for a review his compositions in a concert spiced with pop
