Ann Vriend
Rainbow Bistro, 76 Murray Street
Sunday, October 9 @ 8:30 pm; $7 advance, $10 at the door

Edmonton-based Ann Vriend (pronounced “Vreend”) was born in Vancouver, BC. When her parents discovered their 3-year-old could play nursery songs on a Fisher Price xylophone, they encouraged her musical development by enrolling her in violin lessons. At age nine, when Vriend sought to accompany herself as a songwriter, she took piano lessons from an elderly woman down the street who charged $5 per visit. In high school, in order to be able to submit her home-made recordings for a school project, Vriend was coerced into performing 3 of her compositions at the school talent show. Accolades from her fellow students translated into projects with older students in bands, scholarships at music college, 1st place in a songwriting contest which paid for her debut album, and praise from critics and loyal fans around the world. Ann Vriend's new album, entitled "For The People In The Mean Time" tells tales of her rough, inner city neighbourhood against the backdrop of explosive indie soul beats and harmonies.

Update from Rob:
I am just back from a great tour in the East including the great Deep Roots Festival in Wolfville, NS. I am excited to be returning to The Cove Inn in Westport on Friday, October 7. This is a great room in a historic inn on Rideau Lake. If you are in the area – and that includes Kingston and environs – come by and see this great spot with live acoustic music and awesome food. I will be featuring a number of new tunes.
Here is a live version of the first ever performance of I AM THE BLUES, a new song inspired by the wonderful EyesteelFilm movie of the same name released in 2016. I AM THE BLUES, the film, is the most moving journey through the blues that I have ever seen.

John Primer
Rainbow Bistro, 76 Murray Street
Saturday, October 15 @ 9:30 pm

As the title of his critically acclaimed Atlantic Records CD suggests, Grammy Award and Blues Music Award Nominee, John Primer is truly “The Real Deal.” At 8 years old, John borrowed his first guitar and started to strum. Before that he played a homemade guitar built on the wall of the house with a broom wire, 2 nails, and 2 rocks to make it tight. With the sounds of Jimmy Reed, Muddy Waters, Little Milton, Elmore James, BB & Albert King reverberating through his Grandmother Laura Nell’s tube radio, John was instantly hooked. Early inspiration came from his family steeped in spiritual, gospel, blues and R&B tradition. As a young boy John’s mother knew he would be a singer, “he came out singing” she would say. John first appeared on stage at the local Baptist church, in his hometown of Camden Mississippi.

Music by the Bay Live Presents
Mad Dogs and Englishmen - The Music of Joe Cocker & Leon Russell
St. Francis Centre, Ajax
Saturday, October 22 @ 8 pm; $65 advance

Returning to Music by the Bay Live by popular demand. A 14-piece band with two drummers, percussion, 5 singers, piano, organ and horns performing the classic songs from the award winning 1970 film of Joe Cocker's Mad Dogs and Englishmen Tour.

Juno Award winning producer Lance Anderson (who brought The Last Waltz to Ajax) has brought together another wonderful roster of Blues All Stars. Backed by a nine-piece band which includes two drummers, the rhythm this group creates is a freight train which will pick you up and drop you down at the Fillmore East in NYC. They come together to celebrate the music that Joe Cocker and Leon Russell threw together to fulfill a tour that almost didn’t happen. Cocker’s English band was not allowed into America, so at the last minute he asked Russell to assemble a group of musical all stars for a tour. Joe asked the right man, as Leon was one of the most connected studio musicians and songwriters in L.A. Part of the ‘Wrecking Crew’.

Charles Bradley has made a name for himself as a riveting live performer. By now, Charles Bradley’s remarkable, against-all-odds rise has been well documented: how he transcended a bleak life on the streets and struggled through a series of ill-fitting jobs before finally being discovered by Daptone's Gabriel Roth. The documentary Charles Bradley: Soul of America, directed by Poull Brien, follows Bradley’s extraordinary journey during the electrifying and transformative months leading up to the release of debut album “No Time for Dreaming”. It was followed by his triumphant second album, 2013’s “Victim of Love”, and earlier this year he released his third album, “Changes”.

Paul DesLauriers Band
Rainbow Bistro, 76 Murray Street
Friday, November 11

Following up on the success of their self-titled album from 2014, The Paul DesLauriers Band returns with the aptly titled “Relentless”, a genuine blues-rock escapade featuring 10 new songs encompassing their most original and powerful work to date. Relentless indeed if you consider the pace at which the band has been working for the last two years with touring, writing and recording. The awards they keep racking up only confirm that hard work pays off. Adding to their multiple Maple Blues and Lys Blues awards and nominations they had a number one album on the iTunes Canada Blues Chart and in January 2016 they took home 2nd Place among 119 competing bands from around the world at the 32nd annual International Blues Challenge, held by the Blues Foundation in Memphis. Hot on the heels of that win they returned to Montreal to complete writing and recording Relentless and the result captures the very essence of The Paul DesLauriers Band.

Samantha Martin & Delta Sugar
Black Sheep Inn, Wakefield QC
Sunday November 13 @ 4 pm

Bubbling up from the cauldron of roots Americana music, Samantha Martin is an artist of extraordinary power, gravitas and deep-seated emotion. On first listen, one is immediately struck by the awesome presence and sheer magnitude of her other worldly voice. Cigarette-ravaged and whiskey-soaked in the extreme, Martin’s pipes are capable of conveying an infinite range of emotions, bringing one to tears in one instance and in the next uplifting one’s soul with an empowered declaration of hope, faith and desire.

Released in February 2015, “Send The Nightingale” represents a quantum leap for both Martin and her group. As a vocalist her roots lie squarely within the wellspring of powerful, strong woman’s voices embodied by such forbears as Marion Williams, Mavis Staples, Etta James, Tina Turner, Bettye LaVette, Lucinda Williams and, perhaps most closely, Bonnie Bramlett. As a songwriter, she draws on black gospel and southern soul with a hint of roots country and sixties pop while her lyrics suggest an old soul with wisdom beyond her years.

While Martin is a powerhouse unto herself, “Send the Nightingale” is not the work of a single talent. In combination with what she likes to term her “co-vocalists,” Sherie Marshall and Stacie Tabb, the vocal blend Delta Sugar produces is pure, unadulterated gospel-tinged, neuron-tingling magic where the sum is even richer than the already soul-melting parts. Add to that guitarist Mikey McCallum’s Delta-inspired and mystery-inflected guitar lines and Samantha Martin and Delta Sugar emerge as one of the most powerful new artists to emerge on the roots music scene in many a year.

Jonas & the Massive Attraction
Rainbow Bistro, 76 Murray Street
Friday, November 18

It’s been quite a ride for Canadian rockers Jonas & The Massive Attraction since the release of their album “Big Slice” in 2010. The album hit Top 15 in sales nationally in Canada on the Nielsen SoundScan Sales Charts in its first week of release. With three chart topping rock radio singles, including their Top 10 hit ‘Big Slice’, Top 15 single ‘The Deep End’ and Top 20 song ‘Seize The Day’, the band was named one of the Top 10 “Most Played Artists” at Canadian rock radio on the Mediabase year-end radio charts for 2011. No small feat, considering they did it on their own indie label, Big Slice Records.

C.R. Avery
Black Sheep Inn, Wakefield QC
Sunday, November 20 @ 8:30 pm; $12 advance, $15 at the door

C.R. Avery is a unique, raw and dynamic performer. His genius lies in many genres – blues, hip-hop, spoken word and rock & roll. He is a one-man band, but one for this generation; with the rare ability to sing poetic verse while beatboxing simultaneously while pounding the piano and adding harmonica like a plot twist. He sings!  He rhymes!  He beatboxes! He's a multi-instrumentalist!

It probably goes without saying that, with his skills as a poet, he's also an amazing songwriter and his new album “All The Angels Didn’t Scare Me”, perhaps more than any other, is a major showcase for his songwriting chops. This was about going back to the traditions of music being a form of journalism for the poor and working classes. It's a contemporary singer-songwriter album, touching on everything from poverty, brokenness and gentrification to Hollywood archetypes and casual relationships -- and it's backed at times by a massive-yet-accessible wall of sound courtesy of Ben Mink and Steve Dawson.

The Last Waltz – 40th Anniversary Celebration
Rainbow Bistro, 76 Murray Street
Friday, November 25

One more time in support of the Ottawa Foodbank, The Bushpilots are again hosting a tribute to The Band's Last Waltz, perhaps the greatest concert film in history, this time to honour the 40th anniversary of this legendary event. Directed by Martin Scorsese, The Last Waltz was a document of The Band's final concert at San Francisco's Winterland ballroom on Thanksgiving Day, November 25, 1976. Joining The Band was an all-star line-up of special guests including Bob Dylan, Paul Butterfield, Eric Clapton, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Muddy Waters, Dr. John, and many more of the icons who created and breathed American music.

The Bushpilots were blessed to be joined by a Who's Who of Ottawa talent in 2013 and 2014 performing before an SRO crowd at the Rainbow Bistro, and we promise this year will be the biggest and baddest yet. Joining the BPs will be, as always, The Cripple Creek Horns.
Thanks to the legendary Rainbow Bistro for once again providing the venue for what will be our 13th Annual Xmas Bash. Ticket details and special guests to be announced in October.
