Paul DesLauriers Band
Rainbow Bistro, 76 Murray Street
Friday, November 11

Following up on the success of their self-titled album from 2014, The Paul DesLauriers Band returns with the aptly titled “Relentless”, a genuine blues-rock escapade featuring 10 new songs encompassing their most original and powerful work to date. Relentless indeed if you consider the pace at which the band has been working for the last two years with touring, writing and recording. The awards they keep racking up only confirm that hard work pays off. Adding to their multiple Maple Blues and Lys Blues awards and nominations they had a number one album on the iTunes Canada Blues Chart and in January 2016 they took home 2nd Place among 119 competing bands from around the world at the 32nd annual International Blues Challenge, held by the Blues Foundation in Memphis. Hot on the heels of that win they returned to Montreal to complete writing and recording Relentless and the result captures the very essence of The Paul DesLauriers Band.

Sunday matinee, November 13 @ 4 pm **afternoon show!!**

About the new record:
It was recorded and mixed in just 3 weeks at Almonte ON’s Signal Path Studio with long-time collaborator and co-producer Ken Friesen. It has combined aspects of all 4 previous recordings and the band enlisted lyrical collaborators including Tom Wilson (Blackie & The Rodeo Kings, Lee Harvey Osmond, Junkhouse), Paul Reddick, Matthew Chaffey (The Split) and engineer & co-producer Ken Friesen (The Tragically Hip, Blue Rodeo) to complete the songs. The result is a raw snapshot of where the band has been and arrived in 8½ years of touring and recording. Kelly Prescott lends backing vocals two tracks otherwise, it’s all Tony. Steve and Matt.

Samantha Martin & Delta Sugar
Black Sheep Inn, Wakefield QC
Sunday November 13 @ 4 pm

Bubbling up from the cauldron of roots Americana music, Samantha Martin is an artist of extraordinary power, gravitas and deep-seated emotion. On first listen, one is immediately struck by the awesome presence and sheer magnitude of her other worldly voice. Cigarette-ravaged and whiskey-soaked in the extreme, Martin’s pipes are capable of conveying an infinite range of emotions, bringing one to tears in one instance and in the next uplifting one’s soul with an empowered declaration of hope, faith and desire.

Released in February 2015, “Send The Nightingale” represents a quantum leap for both Martin and her group. As a vocalist her roots lie squarely within the wellspring of powerful, strong woman’s voices embodied by such forbears as Marion Williams, Mavis Staples, Etta James, Tina Turner, Bettye LaVette, Lucinda Williams and, perhaps most closely, Bonnie Bramlett. As a songwriter, she draws on black gospel and southern soul with a hint of roots country and sixties pop while her lyrics suggest an old soul with wisdom beyond her years.

While Martin is a powerhouse unto herself, “Send the Nightingale” is not the work of a single talent. In combination with what she likes to term her “co-vocalists,” Sherie Marshall and Stacie Tabb, the vocal blend Delta Sugar produces is pure, unadulterated gospel-tinged, neuron-tingling magic where the sum is even richer than the already soul-melting parts. Add to that guitarist Mikey McCallum’s Delta-inspired and mystery-inflected guitar lines and Samantha Martin and Delta Sugar emerge as one of the most powerful new artists to emerge on the roots music scene in many a year.

Jonas & the Massive Attraction
Rainbow Bistro, 76 Murray Street
Friday, November 18

It’s been quite a ride for Canadian rockers Jonas & The Massive Attraction since the release of their album “Big Slice” in 2010. The album hit Top 15 in sales nationally in Canada on the Nielsen SoundScan Sales Charts in its first week of release. With three chart topping rock radio singles, including their Top 10 hit ‘Big Slice’, Top 15 single ‘The Deep End’ and Top 20 song ‘Seize The Day’, the band was named one of the Top 10 “Most Played Artists” at Canadian rock radio on the Mediabase year-end radio charts for 2011. No small feat, considering they did it on their own indie label, Big Slice Records.

C.R. Avery
Black Sheep Inn, Wakefield QC
Sunday, November 20 @ 8:30 pm; $12 advance, $15 at the door

C.R. Avery is a unique, raw and dynamic performer. His genius lies in many genres – blues, hip-hop, spoken word and rock & roll. He is a one-man band, but one for this generation; with the rare ability to sing poetic verse while beatboxing simultaneously while pounding the piano and adding harmonica like a plot twist. He sings!  He rhymes!  He beatboxes! He's a multi-instrumentalist!

It probably goes without saying that, with his skills as a poet, he's also an amazing songwriter and his new album “All The Angels Didn’t Scare Me”, perhaps more than any other, is a major showcase for his songwriting chops. This was about going back to the traditions of music being a form of journalism for the poor and working classes. It's a contemporary singer-songwriter album, touching on everything from poverty, brokenness and gentrification to Hollywood archetypes and casual relationships -- and it's backed at times by a massive-yet-accessible wall of sound courtesy of Ben Mink and Steve Dawson.

Shawn Holt & The Teardrops
Rainbow Bistro, 76 Murray Street
Thursday, November 24 @ 9 pm; $20/25

Shawn Holt is the son of Blues Legend Magic Slim. The high energy, hard-driving sound of The Teardrops is still alive and well and if you like what Magic Slim and The Teardrops have been doing for the last 35 years, you can continue to enjoy that unique sound and energy with Shawn Holt, a chip off the old block, fronting his dad's band.

Shawn started playing the blues at the age of 17, when he went on the road with this father and Slim's brother, Uncle Nick Holt and The Teardrops. Shortly after that tour with his father, Shawn realized his genetic destiny (all the Holt's are talented musicians) and formed his own band. He has been watching, learning and playing blues ever since.

Shawn Holt and The Teardrops are winners for Best New Artist Debut - Daddy Told Me by the Blues Foundation (BMA) 2014. And also won the 2014 Blues Blast Music Award for New Artist Debut Album - Daddy Told Me.

The Last Waltz – 40th Anniversary Celebration
Rainbow Bistro, 76 Murray Street
Friday, November 25

One more time in support of the Ottawa Foodbank, The Bushpilots are again hosting a tribute to The Band's Last Waltz, perhaps the greatest concert film in history, this time to honour the 40th anniversary of this legendary event. Directed by Martin Scorsese, The Last Waltz was a document of The Band's final concert at San Francisco's Winterland ballroom on Thanksgiving Day, November 25, 1976. Joining The Band was an all-star line-up of special guests including Bob Dylan, Paul Butterfield, Eric Clapton, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Muddy Waters, Dr. John, and many more of the icons who created and breathed American music.

The Bushpilots were blessed to be joined by a Who's Who of Ottawa talent in 2013 and 2014 performing before an SRO crowd at the Rainbow Bistro, and we promise this year will be the biggest and baddest yet. Joining the BPs will be, as always, The Cripple Creek Horns.
Thanks to the legendary Rainbow Bistro for once again providing the venue for what will be our 13th Annual Xmas Bash. Ticket details and special guests to be announced in October.

Unsung and On The Side
With Carolyn Fe
Tuesdays, 7-9 pm
Re-broadcast Saturday 10 am – noon & Sunday 2-4 pm (all times EST)
It’s all about the Blues, Jazz and its derivatives from around the globe and just around the corner. Songs rarely heard, from the very first recordings all the way to indie artists who consciously push the envelope to the next generation sounds of the genre; some older releases will be spun - just because the album in old, doesn't mean it's forgotten, thus the "On The Side" part of the show's title.
