Kelly Prescott & Chris Ryan
Black Sheep Inn, Wakefield QC
Sunday, September 4 @ 4 pm

Following her move to Toronto last April, we don’t see Kelly Prescott in the Ottawa area as frequently as we’d like. Celebrating her ‘champagne birthday’ week, she’ll be at the Black Sheep this Sunday, with Chris Ryan. Here’s what Kelly has to say about Chris: “He’s a great singer-songwriter from Newfoundland, a really good guitar player. He’s another powerhouse singer who matches my voice really well. I’ve been dying to do some duo shows with another really great singer. We’re going to team up for a month, and try to demo some stuff together. It’s just one more thing to have right now. I’m just happy to be playing and it’s so nice to be playing with people who are equally as passionate and also have a similar sound to mine. Our voices blend well together. I think it’ll be a good fit.” (from Ottawa Citizen interview, August 26, 2016)

The Jivewires
Irene's Pub, 885 Bank Street
Saturday, September 10 @ 9:30 pm; $10

The Jives come into Irene's for a fall performance geared to the college crowd with a run through of our own tunes including songs from our recent release “Drive Me Sane” and the songs placed in the movie “Prisoners Of Time”. We'll end the night with a Vegas style “blue set” by playing our more risqué tunes! The Jives put on a high energy show of original songs inspired by the great "jump blues" artists of the late ‘40s and early ‘50s like Louis Jordan and wild swing masters like Cab Calloway. With an emphasis on groove, improvisation and social satire, The Jivewires will get you jumpin' like never before!

Friday, September 16 @ 6 pm

Studebaker John Grimaldi was born in Chicago in 1952 and heard the blues firsthand from Big Walter Horton, "One-Armed" John Wrencher, Johnny Littlejohn and other regulars on Maxwell Street. "I can remember a time when you could see Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, he'd play in his own club, Hound Dog Taylor would always be around Maxwell Street. J.B. Hutto, too. Being able to see them perform live was breathtaking. I'm basically self-taught and I'd pick things up by just watching them."

Dinner and Show. Fantastic food with world class Blues. Tickets are $65 plus HST for dinner and show. Only 67 tickets are sold to these events and they sell out.  Contact the Woodlawn for tickets and reservations.

Paul Reddick
Son of Dave
Black Sheep Inn, Wakefield QC
Friday, September 16 @ 8:30 pm

Melding poetry, mystery, darkness and light, along with an extensive knowledge of the history and traditions of blues music is what makes Paul Reddick on of the most popular figures on the blues and roots music scene today. For over 25 years he’s been writing and performing his eclectic brand of blues, bringing the art form to new frontiers with his rapacious, deep vocals, masterful harmonica playing and song writing. As the unofficial poet laureate of Canadian blues, words are his weapon of choice and when he sings, it is near impossible not to listen and get lost within the songs, right alongside him and illustrating what the influential British magazine Mojo described as his “wayward brilliance.”

Son of Dave isn't you're average blues musician. He's an international cult Bluesman on a mission to save your musical soul from atrophy. It would be an easy game, sticking to cliché’s and playing a circuit of guitar-solo lovin', middle-aged divorcees. No disrespect to the working man's blues circuit, but this one-man harmonica & beat-box genius beats his own path, turning rhythm and blues upside down and gathering a huge international army of devoted fans from all walks of life. Son of Dave – born Benjamin Darvill – is half a century old now, and started out in the blues + biker bars of Canadian mid-western city Winnipeg, but has been based in the UK for 20 years. With a CV as long as your arm and a briefcase full of naughty tricks, he is on the road again in 2016 and still hasn't reached top speed. He's a long distance Bluesman, not a quick burner. He'll still be going strong through his next fifty years no doubt. It's YOU that has to catch him before sinking into your old age.

Cecile Doo-Kingué
& Wicked Grin
Black Sheep Inn, Wakefield QC
Saturday, September 17 @ 8:30 pm

An exceptional stage presence, guitarist / singer-songwriter Cécile Doo-Kingué blends blues, afro-roots and soul to create a unique sound. Born and raised in New York City, first generation from Cameroon, she has lived in the USA, France, and is now an adopted Montrealer. Cécile Doo-Kingué isn’t just another token “chick” guitarist; her talents are measured not by gender lines, but by the fact that she is quickly earning a stellar reputation and a place alongside Canada’s current roster of great guitarists. Powerful and raw, Cécile Doo-Kingué’s guitar prowess, lyrics, and sound make for enthralling and intimate communion.

Building on the success of their sophomore album “Shame On Me” released in 2013, and following their 2014 Maple Blues Award for Best New Group, Murray Kinsley & Wicked Grin released “Stormy Water” in November 2015. Featuring 11 road-tested tracks, 10 of which were written by Kinsley, this tight group of experienced musicians have stepped up their game. “Stormy Water” features spirited upbeat, danceable numbers while expanding on the heavier and grittier sound the band has been developing over the past few years. “Stormy Water” was named Best Canadian Blues Rock Album of 2015 by the Blues Underground Network and bassist Leigh-Anne Stanton was named The Maple Blues Awards “Bassist of the Year” for 2015.

The Nylons Farewell Show
Shenkman Arts Centre, Harold Shenkman Hall, Orleans ON
Friday, September 30 @ 8 pm

Having harmonized through our hearts for four decades, The Nylons had popularized the a cappella genre well before the likes of Glee. Touring since 1978, this multi-Juno winning vocal group is singing goodbye with their Farewell Show. This is one last chance to watch the legendary group perform jazz, pop and soul hits.

Pioneers of the crossover and the mashup, these men give catchy favourites new life with creative arrangements. The act showcases the incredible voices of its tenors, bass and baritones for a sound that will have you wondering where they hid all those instruments. Hear joyful renditions of Beatles and Carole King classics, snap along to their original tunes, and experience the doo-wop classic “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” performed live on stage by a national treasure.

John Primer
Rainbow Bistro, 76 Murray Street
Saturday, October 15 @ 9:30 pm

As the title of his critically acclaimed Atlantic Records CD suggests, Grammy Award and Blues Music Award Nominee, John Primer is truly “The Real Deal.” At 8 years old, John borrowed his first guitar and started to strum. Before that he played a homemade guitar built on the wall of the house with a broom wire, 2 nails, and 2 rocks to make it tight. With the sounds of Jimmy Reed, Muddy Waters, Little Milton, Elmore James, BB & Albert King reverberating through his Grandmother Laura Nell’s tube radio, John was instantly hooked. Early inspiration came from his family steeped in spiritual, gospel, blues and R&B tradition. As a young boy John’s mother knew he would be a singer, “he came out singing” she would say. John first appeared on stage at the local Baptist church, in his hometown of Camden Mississippi.
**********
David Gogo
Black Sheep Inn, Wakefield QC
Sunday, October 16 @ 4:20 pm

The success of Gogo's latest album “Vicksburg Call” continues with him being nominated for a 2016 Western Canadian Music Award for Blues Artist Of The Year. This follows a Juno nomination earlier in the year. Gogo will be attending the award ceremonies October 13th in Regina after extensive touring across the country at various festivals and concerts throughout the summer and fall. Gogo has previously won WCMAs for Musician Of The Year in 1999 and Blues Recording Of The Year in 2012 for the album Soul Bender”.

Charles Bradley & His Extraordinaires
Bronson Centre, 211 Bronson Avenue
Sunday October 23 @ 8 pm; advance tickets $35-39.50 + service charges

Charles Bradley has made a name for himself as a riveting live performer. By now, Charles Bradley’s remarkable, against-all-odds rise has been well documented: how he transcended a bleak life on the streets and struggled through a series of ill-fitting jobs before finally being discovered by Daptone's Gabriel Roth. The documentary Charles Bradley: Soul of America, directed by Poull Brien, follows Bradley’s extraordinary journey during the electrifying and transformative months leading up to the release of debut album “No Time for Dreaming”. It was followed by his triumphant second album, 2013’s “Victim of Love”, and earlier this year he released his third album, “Changes”.
