Standing Rock Benefit Concert
Rainbow Bistro, 76 Murray Street
Friday, December 30 @ 7 pm; $10

Stand with Standing Rock December 30 at The Rainbow Bistro and help support a great cause – to protect the clean water for future generations. The Water Protectors at Standing Rock have made a great difference in delaying the Dakota Access Pipeline, but the fight is not over yet; not only are they heading into a cold, off-the-grid winter, but with the new presidential administration coming into office in January, they will face many more obstacles and challenges.

Though we're a little ways away here in Ottawa we still want to lend a helping hand and get them all the support they can get; with that in mind we will be having a benefit concert at The Rainbow Bistro featuring live music by some of Ottawa's favourite blues & rock acts, raffles and other games where you can show your support and maybe even win some great prizes!

DAWG FM's Blues Bud Brent will be MCing the night in between musical performances by: Wicked GrinLucas Haneman & The Lucas Haneman ExpressCrunchy Flower, Inside Out, and Lyle Odjick & Northern Steamwith Special Guest Frederick Carriere (Firebelly).

*** ITEM DONATIONS ARE WELCOME ***
Items such as: Sleeping bags, blankets, winter clothing, etc. will be needed to help get through the winter ahead.

Brief Background on Standing Rock:
(Quoted from www.standwithstandingrock.net)

The Standing Rock Sioux Indian Reservation is home to Dakota and Lakota people of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe. Since time immemorial, they have lived and governed a vast territory throughout North and South Dakota, and parts of Montana, Wyoming, Minnesota, Iowa and Nebraska. Currently, the Tribe is located in central North and South Dakota.

Despite strong objections from the Tribe from the first time they heard of the project, on July 25, 2016, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Army Corps) granted authorization to the Dakota Access Pipeline to cross Lake Oahe as part of the construction of a 1,100-mile pipeline that is proposed to carry over a half-million barrels of Bakken crude oil to Illinois and across four states. The current route of construction takes the pipeline less than one half mile from the Tribe’s reservation border, and thus the Tribe maintains a sovereign interest in protecting its cultural resources and patrimony that remain with the land. In addition, all along the route of the pipeline are sites of religious and cultural significance to our people, including burial sites of our ancestors. The pipeline would cross the Tribe’s traditional and ancestral lands and the construction of the pipeline jeopardizes many sacred places. But, while federal law requires meaningful consultation with the Tribe on these matters, that has not happened here. The Tribe opposes DAPL because we must honor our ancestors and protect our sacred sites and our precious waters.

Jordan Officer
NAC Studio, 1 Elgin Street
Thursday, February 16 @ 8 pm; $33

Jordan Officer keeps seducing the audience on both sides of the Atlantic, accompanied by two musicians. His album “Blue Skies” presents the sum total of everything that defines this artist, both intellectually and instinctively. According to Jordan, “This album expresses all the shades of all the colours that inhabit my soul. Blues for sure, but also the jazz of my roots, country music, rock ’n’ roll. My instrument and my voice – nothing is taken for granted. Everything is there. This was not my original plan, but “Blue Skies” is everything that I am. For the first time ever.”
**********
Harry Manx
NAC Theatre, 1 Elgin Street
Saturday, February 18 @ 7:30 pm; $39

“Mysticssippi” blues man Harry Manx has been called an “essential link” between the music of East and West, creating musical short stories that wed the tradition of the Blues with the depth of classical Indian ragas. He has created a unique sound that is hard to forget and deliciously addictive to listen to. Harry forged his distinctive style by studying at the feet of the masters, first as a sound man in the blues clubs of Toronto during his formative years and then under a rigorous tutelage with Vishwa Mohan Bhatt in India. Bhatt is the inventor of the 20-stringed Mohan Veena, which has become Harry’s signature instrument.

Manx is a prolific artist, releasing 12 albums in a 12-year span with no signs of stopping. He has received seven Maple Blues Awards, six Juno nominations, the Canadian Folk Music Award in 2005 for Best Solo Artist and won CBC Radio’s “Great Canadian Blues Award” in 2007.
**********
Harpoonist & the Axe Murderer & MonkeyJunk
Shenkman Arts Centre, 245 Centrum Boulevard, Orleans
Wednesday, February 22 @ 8 pm

First off on this double bill, a blues band for true blues fans who appreciate raw riffs, rough soul and deep roots. Matthew Rogers on drums and guitar (the “axe”) and Shawn Hall on vocals and harmonica (the mouth “harp”) are behind the gritty sound that’s steeped in the electric groove blues of the ’50s, ’60s and ’70s. The Harpoonist & The Axe Murderer has been nominated for multiple Maple Blues Awards and won Blues Act of the Year at the SiriusXM Indies. The duo has toured the major festival circuit including SXSW, and Folk Fests, Blues Fests, and Jazz Fests across the country, impressing crowds with their signature fervor.

Rounding out the night is Ottawa-based band MonkeyJunk with a bluesy blend of swampy roots-rock. Each an established musician in his own right, the MonkeyJunk trio has won a collective 20 Maple Blues Awards, two Canadian Independent Music Awards, a Blues Music Award (USA), a Juno, and a passionate following of fans designated “MonkeyJunkies”.

This show will have audiences stompin’ and howlin’ for more.

NPR from Canton NY
For those who live south of the city, OBS member Bob Cavan notes that the National Public Radio (NPR) radio signal at 89.5 FM in Canton NY comes in pretty strong in Manotick. Bob recommends two shows in particular. Bob says “The Blue Note” Tuesdays 3 pm-5 pm, and “The Radio Bob Show” Wednesdays 3 pm-5 pm are both excellent shows – blues, ‘50s & ‘60s, rock & roll, R&B.

Unsung and On The Side
With Carolyn Fe
Tuesdays, 7-9 pm
Re-broadcast Saturday 10 am – noon & Sunday 2-4 pm (all times EST)
It’s all about the Blues, Jazz and its derivatives from around the globe and just around the corner. Songs rarely heard, from the very first recordings all the way to indie artists who consciously push the envelope to the next generation sounds of the genre; some older releases will be spun - just because the album in old, doesn't mean it's forgotten, thus the "On The Side" part of the show's title.
