SPECIAL EVENTS THIS WEEK

John Carroll Live Album Release
The Blacksheep Inn, Wakefield QC
Sunday, December 27 @ 4:20 pm; $12 advance, $15 at the door

"Live at the Acoustic Grill" is John's fourth full length release, and his first live album. This album includes new versions of his older tunes, brand new songs and a couple of great covers, all recorded live on The Acoustic Grill's stage.

The album was produced in conjunction with Steve Purtelle, proprietor of The Acoustic Grill in Picton, ON. Steve is known across Canada by all great touring musicians worth their salt, and his venue has become a staple on the Ontario live music circuit. In 2009, Steve and his partner Jenny Leigh started their own record label, Acoustic Jams so they could produce "live only" albums of their favorite musicians. John's new album will be Acoustic Jam's eighth live release!

For his matinee release at The Blacksheep Inn, John will be joined by Fred Guignon (lap steel) and Phil Charbonneau (bass), two top shelf Ottawa musicians and long time members of John Carroll's Epic Proportions.

Blues On The Rideau
The Cove Inn, Westport ON
Dinner & Show Fundraisers
Once a month 7-11 pm; $65

Blues On The Rideau is a Dinner and Show Fundraiser Series that has been running at The Cove Country Inn in Westport, Ontario for the past 10 years. The shows start in September and run once a month through to May (December excluded) and feature some of the best Blues bands in Canada (and a few American ones too). It has come to be recognized as one of the premier Blues Series in Canada. Every show is a fundraiser for a different local charity. To date the Series has raised over $55,000. The goal for this season is another $5K.

The Cove Inn is located in the beautiful village of Westport on Upper Rideau Lake - about a 90 minute drive from Ottawa, 45 minutes from Kingston. All BOTR shows run from 7 to 11 pm and include a delicious full course buffet dinner. The staff at The Cove are very friendly and the venue is small, intimate and relaxed. After dinner you get to see and dance to the bands up close and personal – the way Blues is best enjoyed – all for a very reasonable price – $65 (plus tax). There are door prize giveaways at every show and 2 Grand Prizes drawn at the end of the season from all of the Comment Cards filled in by attendees over the year.

ADVANCE RESERVATIONS are required and it is wise to book well ahead especially if you want to stay overnight. Rooms at The Cove and nearby B&Bs and motels frequently sell out for Blues nights. Call The Cove at 613-273-3636 or 1-888-COVEINN to reserve.

More info on the Series, including Bios, LINKS to websites and YOU TUBES of all the artists can be found at www.BluesOnTheRideau.ca

SPECIAL EVENTS COMING UP
****************************
The 24th Street Wailers
Rainbow Bistro, 76 Murray Street
Friday, January 8 @ 9 pm

Experienced, road-tested and tougher than a two by four, The 24th Street Wailers are five musicians who originally met in music school. Their major influence? The sounds from the freewheeling period in the ‘40s and ‘50s when the Blues gave birth to Rock and Roll in black communities in major American cities. When showmanship mattered. When the sax player, not the guitarist, got the girls.

Led by Lindsay Beaver. A wild and crazy front woman and singing drummer. This band is filled out by Michael Archer on Upright Bass, Marc Doucet on Guitar, Jesse Whiteley on Piano, and Jonny Wong on wailing Sax. This band has been winning over the masses with their unbeatable live performances and a sense of showmanship from a time gone by, something many consider lost in modern day music.

The Harpoonist & the Axe Murderer
Black Sheep Inn, Wakefield QC
Friday, January 29 @ 8:30 pm

In reality, Shawn ‘The Harpoonist’ Hall and Matthew ‘The Axe Murderer’ Rogers evoke much more than just grisly nautical imagery. Armed with an arsenal of harmonicas, a mess of foot percussion, and a road-worn Telecaster, the duo kick out raw and primal blues in the tradition of a ‘decades-deep blues style’ (Scott Brown, What’s up Yukon), while infusing the genre with a jolt of renewed energy.

Their influences range from the iconic songwriting of Willie Dixon to the boundary pushing of Jack White and Danger Mouse but their sound is distinctly their own, smothered in greasy, gritty soul and imbued with funk. Shawn Hall provides the rousing, rugged vocals and blues harmonica, while Matthew Rogers rips on the guitar and pounds the skins with his feet. Their music is unapologetic. It slaps you in the face and makes you sweat like it’s a sticky, summer night. It cuts you to the core. It’s the blues played the way it was meant to be played.
