SPECIAL EVENTS THIS WEEK
****************************
The 22nd edition of Virée Blues Boréale presents
Irene Torres & The Sugar Devils
Le Petit Chicago, 50 Promenade du Portage, Gatineau QC
Wednesday, November 11 @ 8 pm; tickets $20
Ottawa Blues Society members - $15 with OBS card

Irene Torres of Irene Torres & The Sugar Devils, also known in another musical genre, with the flamenco-fusion latin band Santerias was born in Lima, Peru. Her parents had a deep appreciation for the arts and, as a child, she performed and studied acting and dancing.  Toward the end of the ‘80s, she moved to Canada, to Toronto where she still lives. Irene Torres started a career in advertising then began her studies of music under the tutelage of some of the most noteworthy vocal instructors in North America. Since then, she has clearly demonstrated her versatility, performing in various musical genres but always leaving her audiences stunned by the power of her voice and by the level of her energy.

Irene Torres & The Sugar Devils began their journey performing New-Orleans music their own way. It came out as a mix of Blues, with Funk, R&B, Reggae, Jazz, with some Latin and Soul; a strong passionate encounter of the Old and the New which, on the whole, proves unique and refreshing. The lively drumming of Ian MacKay, the funky bass by Jesse Dietschi, the sentimental guitar of Josh Piche, the inspired sax and the gliding organ playng by Anthony Brancati and the powerful and attractive voice, the voice of Irene Torres, all that rapidly brought this band to be an absolute must hear!

**********
Jake Chisholm Band
Rainbow Bistro, 76 Murray Street
Saturday, November 14 @ 9 pm

There is a sincerity in Jake Chisholm’s music that is immediately identifiable. Whether his compelling vocal, his memorable guitar hooks, or his thoughtful lyrics; he excels in all areas, providing the listener with the feelings of both familiarity and being privy to something cutting edge; both at once. No fancy bells and whistles here, just a deep and full sound that is a fresh take on blues and adding rock ‘n’ roll elements. Inspired by classic blues, soul and rock ‘n’ roll, Chisholm’s tasteful yet intricate guitar work and songwriting evokes vivid and shameless tales of love, lust, and lessons learned.

BLUES ON THE RIDEAU 2015/16

Blues On The Rideau is a Dinner and Show Fundraiser Series that has been running at The Cove Country Inn in Westport, Ontario for the past 10 years. The shows start in September and run once a month through to May (December excluded) and feature some of the best Blues bands in Canada (and a few American ones too). It has come to be recognized as one of the premier Blues Series in Canada. Every show is a fundraiser for a different local charity. To date the Series has raised over $55,000. The goal for this season is another $5K.

The Cove Inn is located in the beautiful village of Westport on Upper Rideau Lake - about a 90 minute drive from Ottawa, 45 minutes from Kingston. All BOTR shows run from 7 to 11 pm and include a delicious full course buffet dinner. The staff at The Cove are very friendly and the venue is small, intimate and relaxed. After dinner you get to see and dance to the bands up close and personal – the way Blues is best enjoyed – all for a very reasonable price – $65 (plus tax). There are door prize giveaways at every show and 2 Grand Prizes drawn at the end of the season from all of the Comment Cards filled in by attendees over the year.

ADVANCE RESERVATIONS are required and it is wise to book well ahead especially if you want to stay overnight. Rooms at The Cove and nearby B&Bs and motels frequently sell out for Blues nights. Call The Cove at 613-273-3636 or 1-888-COVEINN to reserve.

More info on the Series, including Bios, LINKS to websites and YOU TUBES of all the artists can be found at www.BluesOnTheRideau.ca

**********
Andria Simone
Rainbow Bistro, 76 Murray Street
Friday, December 4 @ 9:30 pm

Singer-songwriter Andria Simone was born and raised in Toronto, Ontario. Her style can be described as “soul-flavoured”, but she is a lover of many genres. Her eclectic taste in music can be partly attributed to the various places she has lived, including Manchester, England and Lviv, Ukraine. Andria’s passion for music has never been in question — singing has been a dream of hers since she could hold a note. More a force of nature than an instrument, hers is a voice that can send shivers up your spine while tugging at your heart. Her role models are such powerhouse singers as Janis Joplin, Tina Turner, Nina Simone, Aretha Franklin, Etta James and Amy Winehouse.

She is not a conventional 12-bar blues singer, but she can certainly excel in that format. That was vividly demonstrated when she participated in the famed Women’s Blues Revue at Toronto’s historic Massey Hall, sharing the spotlight alongside such veterans as Shakura S’Aida, Divine Brown and Lori Yates. Since 2012, Andria has performed extensively with her ace young group, whom she affectionately dubs “Those Guys”. They comprise bassist Mark Wilson, guitarist Dave Kirby, saxophonist Brian Dhari, and drummer George Nikolov.
**********
James Armstrong
Rainbow Bistro, 76 Murray Street
Saturday, December 12 @ 9:30 pm

James Armstrong has a confident stage presence that combines grace with mischief. Few blues artists know how to play the crowd as James can, shifting dynamics from a whisper to a growl. Wherever he travels around the world, his magnetism continues to hush a noisy rabble or entire a crowd to follow him out into the street or down the length of a beach. Little wonder he’s been dubbed: The Ambassador of the Blues.

His latest CD “Guitar Angels” was released on Catfood Records. In 2014 it was awarded “Best Traditional Release” by Blues411.

Soulstack
RCHA Club, 193 Ontario Street, Kingston ON
Saturday, December 5 @ 8:30 pm

Like a beat up old Dodge burning down the highway with a brand new set of rims and a candy metallic paint job, Soulstack carves out their modern roots music in nouveau-retro-style, inspired by sweaty sounds and throbbing rhythms, all performed with deep intensity, wild conviction, greasy organ, sweet tremolo-soaked guitar, and heartbreaking harmonies.

These young Soulstack men stand by their beat-up vintage instruments and bleed every ounce of emotion from them – taking the listener on a rhythmic and melodic journey from the swamps of Louisiana to the exhaust-tinged fuzz of Detroit with award winning engineer Jeremy Darby (Smokey Robinson, Keith Richards, Prince.)

Soulstack was formed in 2011 by frontman Jonathan Knight and keyboardist Mark Wessenger. The band consists of Maple Blues Award-winning drummer Tom Bona, bass Darryl ‘Harpo’ Peterson and baritone guitarist Chris Latta.
