Instruments for Africa Benefit & Silent Auction
A fundraiser for Instruments for Africa’s upcoming shipment to Zambia
with John Kadlecik and Lucas Haneman
Irene’s Pub, 885 Bank Street
Friday, September 5 @ 9 pm; $10

American singer and guitarist John Kadlecik made a name for himself performing the music of Jerry Garcia in the world’s premier Grateful Dead tribute act, Dark Star Orchestra.  In 2009 he was recruited by Grateful Dead founding members Phil Lesh and Bob Weir for their most popular post-GD project, Furthur, and with his musical heroes transformed into musical partners Kadlecik spent the next five years on an endless tour of sold-out arena and festival dates helping to continue the legacy of the Grateful Dead.

While it’s easy to classify Lucas Haneman as a new sensation on the Ottawa scene, in reality the 28-year-old has been playing around Ottawa for almost two decades.  While in high school he received the CBC Rising Star Award at the 2005 Ottawa International Jazz festival.  In 2010 he
graduated from Concordia University with a BFA in Jazz Studies where he received the prestigious Oscar Peterson scholarship.

IFA founder and local musician Todd Snelgrove will be returning to Zambia this fall to distribute another 100 trumpets, flutes, trombones, guitars, clarinets, and keyboards to several schools throughout the country.  The goal of this benefit concert is to help cover the costs of shipping and distribution of the instruments.

The Classy Chassys and Lucas Haneman
LIVE! on Elgin, 220 Elgin Street
Thursday, September 6; doors @ 8 pm, show @ 8 pm; $8 advance, $10 at the door

The Classy Chassys are a Saskatoon-based Hard Rockabilly band. What is rockabilly, you may ask. Well, people tend to think Elvis, Johnny Cash, and other ’50s artists. However, this group’s various influences of rock and roll, punk, blues, jazz, and more combine to create a high-energy, hard-hitting sound, leaving you with visions of bands like Flogging Molly, Rancid, and AC/DC. With an emphasis on an explosive live show, guitarist/singer Matt Joyal, upright bassist Dan Neumeier, saxophonist Kenny Martelli, and drummer Luke Saretsky prove that this ain’t just oldies music anymore.
The Lucas Haneman Express is a soulful, fun filled and electrifying musical ride. The groups front man, Lucas Haneman, has long been widely regarded for his distinctive and explosive guitar work. With Jeff Asselin (drums), Martin Newman (bass), and a full length album full of ear candy and poignant lyrics, the Ottawa based musician has found his true means of self-expression.

BLUES ON THE RIDEAU
2015/16 LINE-UP

Blues On The Rideau – the Dinner and Show Fundraiser Series that has been running at The Cove Country Inn in Westport, Ontario for the past 10 years and is now recognized as one of the premier Blues Series in Canada – is pleased to announce its 2015/16 Line-Up. The shows start in September and run once a month through to May (December excluded). It’s another all star cast of some of Canada’s best Blues bands with a mix of popular returnees and a couple of new bands that have never played BOTR before. As in previous years every show is a fundraiser for a different local charity. To date the Series has raised over $55,000. The goal for this season is another $5K.

All BOTR shows run from 7 to 11 pm and include a delicious full course buffet dinner served by the Cove’s friendly staff. The venue is small, intimate and relaxed. After dinner you get to see and dance to world class Blues bands up close and personal – the way Blues is best enjoyed – all for a very reasonable price – $65 (plus tax). There are door prize giveaways at every show and 2 Grand Prizes drawn at the end of the season.  ADVANCE RESERVATIONS are required and it is wise to book well in advance, especially if you want to stay overnight. Rooms at The Cove and nearby B&Bs and motels frequently sell out for Blues nights. Call 613-273-3636

Note that there has been a small increase in price this year – $5 - the first in 5 years – to help cover cost increases over that time. And there is a new Reservation Policy in place this year – a credit card number is required with the reservation (although the card is not charged until the night of the show). Cancellations or changes in the reservation can be made up to a week prior to the event without penalty. After that time those than don’t show – or come with fewer than reserved for – will be charged for those seats – although a credit will be applied for a future show that season (space available) if there is a legitimate reason. The new policy has been implemented due to the number of "no-shows" over the past several years which, in many cases, has prevented others who would like to see that show from attending.

Soulstack
The Bar(n), 5503 Third Line Road, North Gower ON
Sunday, September 27, 4-8 pm

Like a beat up old Dodge burning down the highway with a brand new set of rims and a candy metallic paint job, Soulstack carves out their modern roots music in nouveau-retro-style, inspired by sweaty sounds and throbbing rhythms, all performed with deep intensity, wild conviction, greasy organ, sweet tremolo-soaked guitar, and heartbreaking harmonies.

These young Soulstack men stand by their beat-up vintage instruments and bleed every ounce of emotion from them – taking the listener on a rhythmic and melodic journey from the swamps of Louisiana to the exhaust-tinged fuzz of Detroit with award winning engineer Jeremy Darby (Smokey Robinson, Keith Richards, Prince.)

Soulstack was formed in 2011 by frontman Jonathan Knight and keyboardist Mark Wessenger. The band consists of Maple Blues Award-winning drummer Tom Bona, bass Darryl `Harpo` Peterson and baritone guitarist Chris Latta.
