SAY AHH! Fundraiser for
the Ottawa Hospital Ear, Nose, Throat Cancer Clinic
Greenfield's Pub, 900 Greenbank Road, Barrhaven
Saturday, May 9 @ 7 pm; $ 20.00 (cash only)

Featuring the music of:
Terry Gillespie and The Granary Blues Band with Brian Monty on guitar, Stephen Barry on bass, Jody Golick on sax, Martin Boodman on harmonica, Ted Gerow on keys and Gordon Adamson on drums
The Phoenix Big Band (Ottawa) http://www.thephoenixbigband.com
Seven seasoned musicians hailing from Barbados, England, Silesia, and across Canada with an abiding love for traditional blues and R&B, leavened with touches of jazz and reggae have been professional part-time players from their youths.
MTL (Montreal) - Blending Rock, Pop and R&B styles with tight harmonies, MTL brings out the best with their interpretation of classics from the 70's 80's and 90's. MTL’s 8 member ensemble has been performing together for over 7 years, and they are dedicated to giving back to the community through music, playing at benefits, charity fundraisers and other special events.

Brian Monty, a guitar maker as well as a musician (guitar player as well as singer), was diagnosed in 2010 with Stage IV Laryngeal cancer caused by the HPV virus. On April 6, 2011 he underwent a total laryngectomy and neck dissection, leaving him without vocal cords and a total neck breather, followed by 6 weeks of radiation. Thanks to the excellent care he received from Dr. Andre Lamothe, Dr. Berndt Esche and the wonderful team of nurses, speech pathologists, physiotherapists etc. etc. at the Ottawa General Hospital he is now back making his guitars (www.montyguitars.com) and playing music.

He decided that it was time to give back to the Ear, Nose, and Throat Cancer Clinic of Dr. Lamothe by using his music connections and do a fundraiser for them. The first Say Ahh fundraiser was held April 6, 2014 and $ 5,000.00 was raised which was 100% donated to the Ear, Nose, Throat Cancer Clinic of the Ottawa Hospital.

Brian decided to make this an annual event; May 9, 2015 will be another evening of celebration of life through singing and music. We hope again to be able to make a difference for the Ear, Nose, and Throat Cancer Clinic.

Special Custom Made Guitar Event
International renowned luthier Brian Monty has designed a very special and unique guitar to raffle-off as another way to raise funds for this event. It is a semi-hollow electric guitar with unique colouring utilizing the symbolic colours of the ‘Head and Neck Cancer’ logo with the cancer ribbon decorating the headstock. Tickets for the raffle will cost $10 and will be available at the event. The raffle will take place at 10 pm and you have to be present to win.

Virée Blues Boréale presents
The Stephen Barry Band
Le Petit Chicago, 50 Promenade du Portage (old Hull), Gatineau QC
Wednesday, May 13 @ 8 pm;
tickets $20
Ottawa Blues Society with membership card $15

Whether considering their 40 year on stage career, their 10 CDs, their two nominations for Felix awards, their Lys Blues Hommage, or even anecdotes like Bo Diddley’s frequent flatulences on stage at Montreal’s famous Rising Sun, or Big Mama Thornton’s relish for “Tough Milks” (gin with milk), Virée Blues Boréale’s next guests belong to a select class of Canadian Bluesmen.
This year, the spiritual father of Canadian Blues is celebrating his 40-year career with an all-new opus. The Stephen Barry Band on our stage: four seasoned musicians with perfect-sounding instruments, great jazzy Blues ... and lots of white hair! But also lots of: “Ahh! I can’t wait to hear them!” The result is charming by the precision as well as by the finesse of the music and by those musicians’ virtuosity, all that which earned them the honour of playing with the great names of the Blues: B.B. King, John Lee Hooker, Bo Diddley, Buddy Guy, Big Mama Thornton, Hubert Sumlin, Pinetop Perkins, Johnnie Johnson, Vann ‘Piano Man’ Walls and with the highly respected Oliver Jones. A new show and an all-new album to celebrate the 40th career anniversary of one of this country’s very best Bluesmen.

Jordan John
El Capitano Taco Stand, 1581 Merivale Road
Friday, May 15 @ 9:30 pm; $10

To say that vocal sensation Jordan John is a more powerful and polished lead vocalist and multi-instrumentalist than many players twice his age would tell just a fraction of the story.  He has already compiled a longer list of credits, and displays more assuredness and maturity, than many performers twice his age.  Adept on drums, keyboards, guitar and bass, he distils the blues, soul and rhythm & blues into a sound that is both solidly traditional and a bold departure from the electronically generated music that has saturated the pop charts in recent years.
Jordan is far from an overnight sensation. He already has more than a decade of experience as a sideman for a wide variety of artists visiting the Toronto area and more recently, fronting his own bands. He began performing professionally on drums as a teenager. At first, he was introduced to other musicians by his father, Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame bassist Prakash John.
With his debut album, ‘New Day’ being released in the summer of 2013, the future looks bright for this emerging Canadian talent as he embarks on his first foray into the international market with industry interest aplenty and fan support ever growing.
Delivering a refined essence of traditional based Blues, Soul & Rhythm ‘n’ Blues, this musical dynamo adds a breath of fresh air to the contemporary music landscape.  Only time will tell what the future holds for this rising star.  What is certain is that the results will be potent, powerful and positive... the soul stirring revelation that is the music of Jordan John.

Jennis brings together award-winning Guelph-based Dennis Gaumond’s decades of experience writing and performing original blues and folk and the diverse musical experiences of veteran Toronto indie-scene multi-instrumentalist Jen Gillmor. The unique blend of cello and dobro is also augmented by unusual sounds, such as didgeridoo, custom-tuned harmonicas, flute, wah-guitar, jaw harp and waxinator. It makes for a very entertaining performance, filled with energy, passion and humour. Their rootsy sound is at times bluesy, at times funky, jazzy or folky, with a hint of exotic ethnic influences. Jennis’ music celebrates the mysteries and poignancies of life, rooted in an unapologetic faith in peace and love as the highest powers.

Soulstack
The Standeasy @ the RCHA Club, 193 Ontario Street, Kingston ON
Saturday, May 23

Deep, inescapable grooves, swampy tremolo-soaked guitars, gritty-voiced harmonies… That is the soul tradition, those are the footprints that Soulstack follows in...
Soulstack was formed in 2011 by frontman Jonathan Knight (Wickens-Knight) and keyboardist Mark Wessenger. The band consists of drummer Tom Bona, and bassists Darryl ‘Harpo’ Peterson and Josh Knight baritone Guitarist Chris Latta.

Their 2012 Debut release “Big Red” garnered outstanding critical reviews. The band received 2014 Maple Blues Award nominations for Electric Act of the Year and Drummer of the Year and was nominated for an Independent Music Award (IMA) for 2013. “Five Finger Discount” is Soulstack’s sophomore album, combining poignant lyricism and sweet vocal harmony with the rhythm and grit of traditional blues. Self-produced, it tracks the organic evolution of the band as it continues growing in musical breadth and depth. http://www.soulstackmusic.com/
