Kingstown NEW Mississippi
With special guest Des Ébauches
Avant Garde Bar, 135½ Besserer Street
Friday, April 17, 8:45 pm – midnight; Pay what you can
A report on Kingstown NEW
Mississippi’s Good Friday show in Kingston:
EMERGENCY CREW called into a
very popular bar in Kingston in the wee hours of Good Friday to replace the
dance floor.
According to a spokesperson
for the establishment, it was definitely NOT an act of vandalism. They said
"absolutely! the crime was a result of enthusiastic dancing that just wore
the floor into oblivion. The band Kingstown NEW Mississippi played such
danceable music, the patrons (including myself) couldn't help ourselves, it was
so much fun!!!!"
Asked if the bar would
invite Kingstown NEW Mississippi back again after what happened? their response
was: "are you kidding, yes, yes, yes, in a heartbeat."

New York City. 1922. Yank has spent his life shovelling coal on an ocean liner. Brutish, powerful and commanding, he knows where he belongs: in the stokehold. But when the daughter of a wealthy industrialist decides to slum it and see life below deck, Yank’s universe changes forever. Unable to forget the way she looked at him, Yank hits the booming streets of New York to seek revenge. National
Arts Centre Theatre, 53 Elgin Street
Friday,
May 1 @ 7:30 pm; tickets starting @ $29
Ask her about the frequent
comparisons to Billie Holiday, and Molly
Johnson will tell you: she’s not like Billie
Holiday, she is because of Billie Holiday and the hard-won
battles of an earlier generation of women and men. Molly’s most recent
album, “Because of Billie”,
is her tribute to Holiday’s heartbreaking childhood, and a portion of the CD’s
revenues have gone to benefit Boys and Girls Clubs across Canada.
An award-winning and
internationally acclaimed singer, and tireless philanthropist, Molly debuted at
the tender age of four in Ed Mirvish’s Porgy and Bess and has
continued to make her mark in theatre, rock, funk, disco, jazz, broadcasting,
and charity work. Joined by Robi
Botos (piano) and Terry
Clarke (drums), Molly’s smoky voice brings her own brand of
sweetness and desire to Holiday’s songs, while never failing to invoke pure
Holiday like no one else.

Pop and R&B styles with tight harmonies, MTL brings out the best with their
interpretation of classics from the 70's 80's and 90's. MTL’s 8 member ensemble
has been performing together for over 7 years, and they are dedicated to giving
back to the community through music, playing at benefits, charity fundraisers
and other special events.
Brian Monty, a guitar maker
as well as a musician (guitar player as well as singer), was diagnosed in 2010
with Stage IV Laryngeal cancer caused by the HPV virus. On April 6, 2011 he
underwent a total laryngectomy and neck dissection, leaving him without vocal
cords and a total neck breather, followed by 6 weeks of radiation. Thanks to
the excellent care he received from Dr. Andre Lamothe, Dr. Berndt Esche and the
wonderful team of nurses, speech pathologists, physiotherapists etc. etc. at
the Ottawa General Hospital he is now back making his guitars (www.montyguitars.com)
and playing music.
He decided that it was time
to give back to the Ear, Nose, and Throat Cancer Clinic of Dr. Lamothe by using
his music connections and do a fundraiser for them. The first Say Ahh
fundraiser was held April 6, 2014 and $ 5,000.00 was raised which was 100%
donated to the Ear, Nose, Throat Cancer Clinic of the Ottawa Hospital.
Brian decided to make this
an annual event; May 9, 2015 will be another evening of celebration of life
through singing and music. We hope again to be able to make a difference for
the Ear, Nose, and Throat Cancer Clinic.

Brendan
J. Stephens and Willow Walker are 1920s blues singers in the flesh. Hitchhiking
between raucous house shows, rowdy bars and busking everywhere inbetween, they
have crafted a way of singing both their own material and songs near one hundred
years old ina way entirely their own.

Soulstack
The
Standeasy @ the RCHA Club, 193 Ontario Street, Kingston ON
Saturday, May 23
Deep, inescapable grooves, swampy tremolo-soaked
guitars, gritty-voiced harmonies… That is the soul tradition, those are the
footprints that Soulstack follows in...
Soulstack was formed in 2011 by frontman Jonathan
Knight (Wickens-Knight) and keyboardist Mark Wessenger. The band consists of
drummer Tom Bona, and bassists Darryl ‘Harpo’ Peterson and Josh Knight baritone
Guitarist Chris Latta.
Their 2012 Debut release “Big Red” garnered outstanding critical reviews. The band received 2014 Maple Blues Award nominations for Electric Act of the Year and Drummer of the Year and was nominated for an Independent Music Award (IMA) for 2013. “Five Finger Discount” is Soulstack’s sophomore album, combining poignant lyricism and sweet vocal harmony with the rhythm and grit of traditional blues. Self-produced, it tracks the organic evolution of the band as it continues growing in musical breadth and depth. http://www.soulstackmusic.com/
