Rick Fines is a veteran of the folk
and blues circuits in North America. He is an engaging storyteller and
songwriter. He won MapleBlues Awards for Songwriter of the Year and Acoustic Act of the Year (twice), and has received eight additional nominations.
His song “Riley Wants His Life Back” won first place in the blues category of
2003 International Songwriting Competition, with B.B. King one of the judges!
His work with Jackson Delta (for 15 years) brought nominations from both the JUNO and
the W.C. Handy Awards. He has played for
legendary blues piano player Pinetop Perkins, songstress Colleen Peterson, folk
icon Penny Lang and many others. He toured from Newfoundland to B.C. to the
Arctic last year alone, bringing his understanding of blues, finger-style and
bottleneck guitar.

For
over three decades Powder Blues has
been Canada’s leading blues band. The sound is a mix of swing, blues, jazz,
rock & roll and r & b with an appeal so wide that people from seven to
seventy often swing side by side at a Powder
Blues concert. Over the years the band has toured non-stop through
Canada, the United States and overseas, spreading a feel-good groove that makes
people dance and shout.
Powder Blues debut album, ‘Uncut’, was shrugged off by
the big record labels who told the band there was ‘no market for the blues’.
Undiscouraged, the band sold it off stage and sent it to radio stations whose
switchboards lit up with calls asking ‘who’s that?’ After selling 30,000 copies
in a few weeks, the same record labels competed to distribute this
‘non-commercial’ product. To date Powder
Blues albums have sold over a million copies worldwide.
Band highlights include winning Canada’s Juno, headlining the world-famous Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, winning the Blues Foundation Award in Memphis, Tennessee and touring the US and Europe with legends like Willie Dixon, John Lee Hooker, B.B. King, James Brown, Albert Collins, James Cotton and Stevie Ray Vaughn.
Leader, Tom Lavin has written many of the band’s best-known songs including ‘Doin’ It Right’ [‘On the Wrong Side of Town’] and ‘Boppin With the Blues’. Born in Chicago where he watched and worked with local bands and blues legends, Tom moved to Vancouver gigging nightly in the downtown nightclub scene. This led to work as a studio musician, song writer, band leader, record producer and film composer.
Tom has won BCMIA awards for ‘Guitarist, Singer, Songwriter and Producer of the Year’, a Juno award for ‘Best New Band’ and the American W.C. Handy award. He has over a dozen gold, and platinum records for Powder Blues, Prism, April Wine, Long John Baldry, Amos Garrett, and many others. His Blue Wave studio has gold records for Powder Blues and numerous other artists.
2014 is the band’s 36th Anniversary. Their more than dozen CD titles and DVD continue to sell world-wide makingTom Lavin & the Legendary Powder Blues one of Canada’s longest-standing musical ambassadors.

Tom Lavin and the legendary Powder Blues Band from Vancouver are coming to Perth. The concert is a fundraiser for the Great War Memorial Foundation for the Perth Hospital. This is the second year that Burns Jewellers has presented a great Canadian Blues band to fundraise for a worthy local charity. Last February, it was Downchild for the Perth Splash Pad which was an awesome concert. This year’s event promises to be just as good!
Powder Blues started in Vancouver in 1978 when the Lavin brothers, Tom and Jack, brought their unique mix of Blues, Swing and R&B with them from Chicago when they moved there and formed the band. Their first album “Uncut” sold over 30,000 copies within a matter of weeks – unheard of for a Canadian Blues band. Over the next decade Powder Blues toured the world, headlined the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, won a Juno Award and an American W.C. Handy Award. Now, 36 years later, they’re still going strong with over a million records sold worldwide delivering “good times guaranteed” every time they perform.

daughter of legendary South African Jazz singer Thandie Klaasen, is one of the
few South African artists who have preserved the classic sound of Township

Africa. Born and raised in Soweto, Lorraine has electrified audiences worldwide
with her dynamic stage presence and showmanship. Lorraine was influenced by
South Africa's musical giants of the 1950's and 1960's, such as Miriam Makeba
(who was a close friend of Lorraine and Thandie) as well as Dolly Rathebe,
Dorothy Masuka, Sophie Mgcina and Busi Mhlongo who frequented her mother's

Lance Anderson is bringing his critically-acclaimed show, 'The Last Waltz – a
Musical Celebration of The Band Live LIVE’ to his hometown of Ottawa. This
night is a celebration of the music of Canadian Hall of Famers, the Band.
In 1976, the Band performed their last concert with
their friends Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Ronnie Hawkins, Van Morrison and others.
Martin Scorsese’s award-winning film of the concert is considered the best
concert film of the era.
Blues fans, although most of the show is 'blues
based' at least 30% IS BLUES! The Hawks were a rockabilly band when they were
with Ronnie Hawkins, but when they set out on their own as “Levon and the Hawks”
they were strictly an R&B and Blues band. Ray Charles, Bobby Bland, Sam
Cooke, Muddy Waters, Sonny Boy … were just some of the blue artists they
covered at that time. They were good friends with Paul Butterfield and Muddy
Waters and played on their recordings.
Featured artists are blues all stars and multiple
MBA and JUNO Award winners. Including The Weber Brothers, Jimmy Bowskill, Johnny
Max and Ottawa's own Steve Mariner (Monkey Junk) with Jerome Levon Avis (Levon
Helm's godson) on vocals and drums. 9 piece band, w 4 horns and TUBA, fiddle,

raise money for the JazzN.ca Bursary to
provide financial assistance to local high school students who wish to attend
Carleton University’s 2015 Jazz Camp (CU Jazz Camp). The CU Jazz Camp currently
costs just over $700 for tuition and in-residence accommodation. JazzN.ca’s goal is to raise enough money to
provide financial assistance for three local students to attend the CU Jazz
Camp.
All in all, then, the March
7th Gala Fundraiser, Dinner and Dance is not only expected to
start a Spring tradition in re-enacting a community commitment to youth, but
also to shake the winter doldrums with a fun-filled evening of dining and

This is an all-star line-up,
featuring Chuck Jackson (lead singer of the Downchild Blues Band), Maple Blues
Lifetime Achievement award winner Paul James, Jerome Levon Avis (Levon Helm’s
godson) the multi-talented Jimmy Bowskill and other special guest singers. The
performance will recreate the atmosphere of The Band’s final concert, which was
captured in Martin Scorcese's award-winning concert film, The Last Waltz.
In this homage to The Last Waltz, Anderson’s special guests will perform
the songs played and sung by these artists at the memorable 1976 concert.
Backed by a 9-piece band
that includes Jerome Levon Avis on drums and vocals, Terry Blersh on guitar,
Dennis Pinhorn (The Hawks) on bass, Rob Gusevs (Blood, Sweat and Tears) on
organ and Anderson (Shakura S'Aida) on piano and vocals, this is a group of
seasoned veterans who love the music. Anderson’s band also features a stellar
four-piece horn section including David Dunlop (Boss Brass) on trumpet, Gord
Meyers (Blood, Sweat and Tears) on trombone and tuba, Chris Murphy (Maple Blues

brings their brand of soul music to the N.A.C.'s Fourth Stage.
Named “People to Watch in
2015,” by the Ottawa Citizen and a featured act on the CBC, The Split is a
neo-soul band that grew out of Canada’s national capital duo the Brothers
Chaffey. Their first EP released in 2014 will get you shaking at a higher
velocity. Their show makes people actually want to dance. No — not dance. The
Split makes you want to Doo Wop.
With a full album slated for release and a tour across the United States and Europe, 2015 promises to be a big year for this band. Members Matthew and Curtis Chaffey, Dan and Michael Grewal, Matt Aston and Terry Owen, burn it up on stage the way Bobby Womack did it. With soul dressed up to groove to a younger beat. Watch out for them this year.

On The Rideau is a Dinner & Show Fundraiser Series featuring some of
Canada's best Blues artists performing in the cozy, intimate setting
of The Cove Country Inn in Westport, Ontario - once a month from October
through May (December excluded). 2014/15 is their 10th Anniversary season.
The
Cove Inn is known for its friendly service, relaxed atmosphere, good food and
drink, comfortable accommodation, excellent LIVE music and for its
beautiful location on Rideau Lake in one of the most scenic small towns
in eastern Ontario. Westport is just a 45 minute drive from Kingston, 1.5
hours from Ottawa.
Despite cost increases, the price for these nights remains at $60 per person (the same as the past 3 years). That includes a delicious full course buffet dinner, the show and dancing. Proceeds from all BOTR nights go to support different local Westport charities. The Series has raised over $50,000 for the community over the past 9 years and the goal is to hit another $5K this season.
