#ottmusik – CALL TO MUSICIANS!
******************************
#ottmusik is an initiative that brings local music to the City of Ottawa's phone system. The goal is to answer calls as quickly as possible, but when a caller has to wait or in the event of a transfer, we want them to hear your music!
The music currently played on the City’s phone systems will be replaced with your music; new music created by local talent. We’re also going to feature your music on ottawa.ca/ottmusiken, so if a caller likes what they hear, they can connect with you directly.
With #ottmusik the City of Ottawa is furthering its commitment to providing new opportunities to Ottawa’s cultural community, while offering citizens an enhanced and unique experience when calling the City.  The City wants to help musicians reach a broader audience, and show our appreciation of what you do for our city.

FATHEAD’s JOHN MAYS NEEDS HELP
******************************
From Al Lerman:
We are sad and concerned to report that our friend and lead singer John Mays has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. The one bit of good news about this is that it is a very slow-growing tumour that has not spread, and can be treated with a 80-95% success rate. Surgery is confirmed for January 28, 2015. John and all concerned are optimistic that he will get through this rough patch. Meanwhile, he has been unable to work, and he receives no sick pay benefits nor health insurance. John will be laid up for a few months at least, and will need money for rent, food and bills. Your contribution big or small is greatly appreciated. We look forward to John getting better and rejoining us soon!
Donations can be made via credit card or Paypal via our web: http://fathead.biz/help-john-mays (dropdown menu under our "HOME" page). We all appreciate your support.

Music By The Bay Live presents
Big Sugar Acoustic
St. Francis Centre Theatre, 78 Church Street South, Ajax, ON
Sunday, January 25; $65 advance, $75 at the door

Big Sugar have always been known for their powerful, high volume live performances but on January 25, the Music by the Bay Live audience will get a rare chance to see Gordie Johnson and the entire Big Sugar family in an intimate and entirely acoustic setting.  The Acoustical Sounds of Big Sugar show will be about creating an unguarded atmosphere where the audience gets a chance to hear the heartbeat of Big Sugar in the most profoundly honest way.

In the opinion of one of Canada’s most prolific and gifted practitioners of the art, music has always been about impacting one’s heart, soul, and spirit. That’s the guiding principle behind every note strummed, penned and sung by Gordie Johnson ever since his days as a teenaged bass prodigy in Windsor, Ontario in the late 1970s and continues to shape his path well into the 21st century.
**********
The Acoustical Sounds of Big Sugar
Shenkman Arts Centre, 245 Centrum Blvd (Orleans)
Friday, January 30 @ 8 pm; tickets $45-$50

Just home from a rockin’ European tour, Gordie Johnson, Mr Chill and the rest of Big Sugar are set to start their Canadian tour in January. Big Sugar’s new tour is all reggae and relaxation. It’s in support of their latest album, “Yardstyle”, an unplugged mix of favourites and new tunes. The show’s set-list will run the gamut from classics like ‘Turn the Lights On’ to brand new cuts ‘Calling All the Youth’ and ‘Police Bway the Vampire’. In Gordie Johnson’s own words, “It’s like the sound of Negril at night.” Ah, that sounds perfect for a cold winter’s night in Ottawa.

Powder Blues Band
PDCI Auditorium, Perth ON
Saturday, February 7

Tom Lavin and the legendary Powder Blues Band from Vancouver are coming to Perth. The concert is a fundraiser for the Great War Memorial Foundation for the Perth Hospital. This is the second year that Burns Jewellers has presented a great Canadian Blues band to fundraise for a worthy local charity. Last February, it was Downchild for the Perth Splash Pad which was an awesome concert. This year’s event promises to be just as good!

Powder Blues started in Vancouver in 1978 when the Lavin brothers, Tom and Jack, brought their unique mix of Blues, Swing and R&B with them from Chicago when they moved there and formed the band.  Their first album “Uncut” sold over 30,000 copies within a matter of weeks – unheard of for a Canadian Blues band. Over the next decade Powder Blues toured the world, headlined the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, won a Juno Award and an American W.C. Handy Award. Now, 36 years later, they’re still going strong with over a million records sold worldwide delivering “good times guaranteed” every time they perform.

The Feb 7 evening starts with a Pre-Show party from 6-8 pm in the Auditorium foyer followed by the concert from 8-10:30 pm and the After-Party from 10:30 pm to midnight where fans get to meet the band, buy CDs and get them signed. Some lucky attendee will also win a prize from Burns Jewellers when their ticket stub is pulled. The cheque presentation to the GWM Foundation will also take place then. Wine, beer & refreshments will be served by the Perth Civitan Club.

Tickets go from $35 Balcony to $65 VIP Front (plus HST) and they’re ON SALE NOW at Burns Jewellers, 66 Foster St., Perth, by phone (613) 267-4466 and online at www.burnsjewellers.com and make a great Christmas gift! RESERVED SEATING; book early for the best seats.

Friday, January 30 @ 8:30 pm; $20.00 advance
Call 613 384-8168 or email bruce@kingstonbluessociety.ca to reserve tickets

Supporting their new album “Blues Central”, this five-piece band, led by singer/guitarist Mack Orr, has enough grit, sweat, and passion to get any crowd on its feet to boogie. Characterized as the best band around for cuttin' loose on a Saturday night, their raw approach is considered one of the most authentic urban blues bands since the 1970s.

Mack developed his talents sitting in with the Fieldstones at Green's Lounge, one of the most popular juke joints in Memphis, TN.  Over the last 15 years he has brought his deep, soulful sound to the world and shared the stage with other notable musicians, including admirers Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood. Teaming up with brothers Harold and James Bonner, drummer William Faulkner, and keyboardist Charlie Wood, Daddy Mack has created a mix of original music with classic tunes that is a testimony to the down-home traditional blues sound.
