CKCU 2014 FUNDING DRIVE
OCTOBER 24-NOVEMBER 9
******************************
CKCU FM – ON AIR / ONLINE / IN YOUR COMMUNITY
Dear Listener,
Thanks to support from people like you, CKCU 93.1FM has been able to provide you with a strong voice for your community. With over 120 shows and 12 languages spoken each week, CKCU offers great music, news, community events, concert listings and much, much more.
CKCU is one of the most vital cultural institutions in Ottawa and we want to continue to bring you compelling radio for another year. Your contribution helps that to happen and the funding drive provides thirty percent of CKCU’s annual budget.
In order to provide your community with a voice on the FM dial, online at www.ckcufm.com, and now directly in your community with our new remote broadcasting, we rely on you to provide us with a reliable source of revenue.
Our volunteers receive no money for putting on their shows and they are asked to help raise money for the station during its annual funding drive. This year our target is $130,000. This money will greatly assist in covering our costs and giving you over 8,500 hours of programming each year.
Please donate today by being as generous as you can. Your contribution helps to keep us a vital cultural resource on-air, online and in your community.

Sincerely,
Matthew Crosier
Station Manager
P.S. You can pledge to your favourite CKCU show online now by going to https://www.ckcufm.com/secure/pledge/
Ottawa Blues This Week’s donation supports John Tackaberry’s ‘Black and Blues’ and Ron Sweetman’s ‘In A Mellow Tone’.

RAINBOW 30TH ANNIVERSARY presents
The 24th Street Wailers
Rainbow Bistro, 76 Murray Street
Friday, November 7 @ 9:30 pm

As most of their fans know, The 24th Street Wailers have had a recent change in personnel: “Emily Burgess has decided that being a part of a full time touring band is not the right career path for her. Emily will continue to play guitar around Toronto, however she is also an amazing teacher and wants to pursue that side of music on a full time basis.” Starting full-time with the band in December is new guitarist Elliot Sowell, based in St. Louis. The Wailers met him at the Blues City Deli 10th Anniversary Street Festival and say, “He's a great guy and a fantastic player ….”

I asked Lindsay Beaver, “So who's playing guitar with the band for your Ottawa gig coming up? Enquiring minds want to know!” Her response: “Nobody! Junior [Chris ‘Junior’ Malleck from Kitchener’s late (and missed!) Daddy Long Legs Band] is going to be on harp. He’s faaantastic! Same songs. Same arrangements. But instead of lead guitar, it'll be lead arrangements.”

Check out the 24th Street Wailers at the Rainbow, Friday, November 7.

Jully Black
Dominion Chalmers United Church, 355 Cooper Street
Saturday, November 8 @ 7:30 pm: $40 (incl HST) + service charge

A force to be reckoned with, this Canadian-born, triple threat (singer/ songwriter/ performer) loves to share her talents and has an enthusiasm for music that is unparalleled. There is no question as to how she has achieved the status of “Canada’s Queen of R&B”, a title given to her by her fans and peers. Her fourth highly anticipated album, entitled “Made In Canada” has been described as ‘The New Motown Sound’. Traditionally, Jully is from the school of R&B, with influences like Etta James and Tina Turner. She has combined these sounds with the rhythmic and eclectic musical stylings of the album’s sole producer YoungPete Alexander from Atlanta, GA. The songs that reside on this album span the music genre spectrum, incorporating elements of Soul, R&B and Pop. Collectively known as “The Officials”, the two have been able to create a musical masterpiece of which the world can relate.

It would be nice if you could join us for one of our remaining gigs with Larry as we all say thanks for his important contribution.

The gigs also present an opportunity to meet our new lead singer, Christie Ulicny, who will be singing one set as our guest vocalist. Christie has a beautiful voice and we are very fortunate to have her with the band as we start a new chapter.

******************************
Blues on Beale Street: Memoirs of the International Blues Challenge is a photo book accompanied by a series of personal experiences, short stories, song lyrics and quotes collected from a vast variety of IBC attendees.

Photographer Jenn Ocken was inspired through eleven years of returning and documenting the International Blues Challenge to create a photo book. Together with writer Greg ‘Slim Lively’ Johnson, she reached out to hundreds of IBC attendees, including but not limited to band members, judges, producers, winners, and fans, and collected their own personal IBC stories to use as a way to archive the happenings at the largest gathering of blues bands in the world. The result – a photo book filled with emotionally rich images and personal experiences that show just how unique this event really is to the blues genre and the blues community.

20% of the book’s pre-order sales will be donated to the Blues Foundation’s Generation Blues fund!

Tim Williams is a blues-based singer / songwriter / multi – instrumentalist. He is a 40 year veteran of the ‘Roots’ music scene in North America, roots which stretch back to the coffee-house scene of his native California in the mid 60′s.
Settling in Canada in 1970, Tim is a studio musician, producer, and a performer in constant demand. He has played Folk / Blues / Jazz festivals and concert halls and clubs from Halifax, to Vancouver Island, to the Yukon.
Inspired by the Hillbilly and Western Swing music he heard as a child, Tim absorbed late Fifties Rhythm & Blues and Rock & Roll, Hawaiian and Mexican music, early Sixties Folk, and Bluegrass “like a sponge” before discovering a passion for traditional blues styles which was fueled by seeing many first generation blues musicians live during the “Blues Boom” of the mid and late Sixties.”

Paul Reddick ***CANCELLED-TO BE RESCHEDULED***
Irene’s Pub, 885 Bank Street
Friday, November 21

Paul Reddick has long been a part of Canada’s rich roots music scene; he is one of the best harmonica players in the country…. His distinctive voice covers a wide emotional palette; always engaging; sometimes a shout, more often a conversationally vivid whisper. But it is Reddick’s songs – sometimes sweet, sometimes bitter, always thought-provking and rarely sentimental – and the passionate way he delivers them that best illustrate what the influential British magazine ‘Mojo’ described as his “wayward brilliance”. … he has been nominated for Junos and a Blues Music Award and he is a seven-time Maple Blues Award winner. And he continues to tour – across Canada and the United State, with two or three trips a year to Europe – with his hard-hitting band.

Contact Dave Brennan dave@clyderiverproductions.com to reserve; 613-290-4840
Ottawa Blues Society members - $5 discount on tickets

Son of a civil rights lawyer and a fiddle player, Doc MacLean was exposed to country blues
and folklore at an early age. By his early teens he was performing in coffeehouses and
festivals, and was appearing on radio and television variety shows. Answering the call of the road, Doc traded a guitar for a 1948 Dodge and set out to explore America.

Performing on bottleneck and standard guitar, Doc MacLean now appears solo and with
upright bass and percussion. While his lyrics are mainly contemporary, his approach as a
guitarist-songster reflects not only his exposure to southern string bands and jug bands, but also to Delta players and storytellers such as Charlie Patton, Son House, and Sam Chatmon.

Michael Kaeshammer
Neat Coffee House, Burnstown ON
Wednesday, November 26; tickets $60

Kaeshammer’s fiery style incorporates elements of his early influences – the New Orleans sound of Fats Waller, Art Tatum and James Booker – on tracks like ‘Kisses In Zanzibar’ and the high-energy, boogie fuelled romp, ‘Rendezvous’, he also takes his cue from one of his own all-time favourite records, Robert Palmer’s Sneakin’ Sally Through the Alley, recorded in New Orleans with influential local funk outfit, The Meters, in 1974. In short, it’s the musical equivalent of Gumbo

Bloodshot Bill
Irene’s Pub, 885 Bank Street
Friday, November 28

Bloodshot Bill started playing in his hometown of Montreal, around 1998, with just a guitar and a stomp board. Since then, he has had over 30 releases throughout Europe, USA and Canada – and still tours all these places frequently. He was banned from entering the States for 5 years (2006-2011) and made his first “(wel)comeback” show in USA at the Norton Records 25th Anniversary Weekend, performing alongside such legendary (and killer!) acts such as Andre Williams, The Sonics, 5678s, Mighty Hannibal and The South Bay Surfers. Since 2003 his hair has been slicked with his own brand of grease, “Nice ‘n’ Greasy”, and he plays his guitar through his custom made one-of-a-kind Richtone Amp.  Usually travels alone as a one man band and absolutely wows the crowds everywhere he plays!

BLUES ON THE RIDEAU

2014/15 LINE-UP
******************************
Blues On The Rideau is a Dinner & Show Fundraiser Series featuring some of Canada's best Blues artists performing in the cozy, intimate setting of The Cove Country Inn in Westport, Ontario - once a month from October through May (December excluded). 2014/15 is their 10th Anniversary season.

The Cove Inn is known for its friendly service, relaxed atmosphere, good food and drink, comfortable accommodation, excellent LIVE music and for its beautiful location on Rideau Lake in one of the most scenic small towns in eastern Ontario. Westport is just a 45 minute drive from Kingston, 1.5 hours from Ottawa.

Despite cost increases, the price for these nights remains at $60 per person (the same as the past 3 years). That includes a delicious full course buffet dinner, the show and dancing. Proceeds from all BOTR nights go to support different local Westport charities. The Series has raised over $50,000 for the community over the past 9 years and the goal is to hit another $5K this season.

Blues On The Rideau is produced by Choose The Blues Productions www.choosetheblues.ca in co-operation with The Cove Inn www.coveinn.com and is sponsored by 101.9 DAWG FM in Ottawa www.dawgfm.com, LAKE 88.1 in Perth/Rideau Lakes www.lake88.ca and DAN AYKROYD WINES www.danaykroydwines.com

Ginger St. James
The Standeasy @ the RCHA Club, 193 Ontario Street, Kingston ON
Saturday, November 15, @ 8:30 pm; $10 at the door

Ginger St. James never disappoints and the country-roots infused music that she writes turns heads like the girl herself.  Many roads travelled and many lessons learned add up to provide the tales she tells with the sweetest voice, or petulant growl depending on the number.  Her life in song is a refreshing array of sock hop greasers, classic country and touching insights to a very real story.  In a world where everything is freeze dried and wrapped in plastic, Ginger St. James is very much like the farmers market – full of friendly, hard-working folk proudly offering the fruits of their labour, colours and aromas embracing all who approach.  You would be forgiven in assuming such a diminutive lass would struggle in the hardscrabble music business, but her charm talent and tenacity is as infectious as the grooves and rhythms that make those finely crafted lyrics come to life with so much energy.  Music lovers know a good thing when they hear it, and Ginger St. James has the package that’s flying off the shelves.

Chicago Blues Legend Studebaker John and The Hawks
The Standeasy @ the RCHA Club, 193 Ontario Street, Kingston ON
Friday, November 21 @ 8:30 pm; tickets $20 in advance

Studebaker John Grimaldi was born in an Italian-American section of Chicago and started playing harmonica at age 7. Under the spell of music he heard on Maxwell Street, Chicago’s famed blues melting pot, John began performing as Studebaker John and the Hawks in the ‘70s. The band name referenced the Studebaker Hawk, a car he still owns today, and was also intended as a tribute to this friend, J.B. Hutto and the Hawks. John began playing guitar after a life-changing experience of seeing Hound Dog Taylor and the Houserockers perform. As a songwriter and musician, Studebaker John has emerged as a major creative form in the world of the blues today. Ahead of the pack, with vision and foresight, creating a new standard and landscape for this music’s future … with John at the wheel, the future is now!
