Clyde River Concert
Series presents
Doc MacLean
Studio Café, 1089
Somerset Street West
PLEASE
NOTE CHANGE OF VENUE
Wednesday, November
26; doors @7 pm, show @ 8 pm; tickets $20 (advance)
Ottawa Blues Society members - $5
discount on tickets
Son of a civil rights lawyer and a fiddle player, Doc
MacLean was exposed to country blues
and folklore at an early age. By his early teens he was
performing in coffeehouses and
festivals, and was appearing on radio and television
variety shows. Answering the call of the road, Doc traded a guitar for a 1948
Dodge and set out to explore America.
Performing on bottleneck and standard guitar, Doc
MacLean now appears solo and with
upright bass and percussion. While his lyrics are
mainly contemporary, his approach as a
guitarist-songster reflects not only his exposure to
southern string bands and jug bands, but also to Delta players and storytellers
such as Charlie Patton, Son House, and Sam Chatmon.

Bloodshot Bill
Irene’s Pub, 885
Bank Street
Friday, November 28;
$10
Bloodshot Bill started playing in his hometown of
Montreal, around 1998, with just a guitar and a stomp board. Since then, he has
had over 30 releases throughout Europe, USA and Canada – and still tours all
these places frequently. He was banned from entering the States for 5 years
(2006-2011) and made his first “(wel)comeback” show in USA at the Norton
Records 25th Anniversary Weekend, performing alongside such legendary (and
killer!) acts such as Andre Williams, The Sonics, 5678′s, Mighty Hannibal and The South Bay Surfers.
Since 2003 his hair has been slicked with his own brand of grease, “Nice ‘n’
Greasy”, and he plays his guitar through his custom made
one-of-a-kind Richtone Amp.
Usually travels alone as a one man band and absolutely wows the crowds
everywhere he plays!

Virée Blues Boréale presents
Dan Livingston & the Griffintown
Jug Adicts & David Gogo
Le Petit Chicago, 50 Promenade du Portage
Wednesday, November
26 @ 8 pm; tickets $20
(OBS
member discount $5 off ticket price with OBS card)
Many might question our
choice to bring together our two next featured guests on the same
stage! Indeed, at first sight, bringing together a five time Juno nominee Bluesman, renowed for his electrifying
rock Blues with one of the very best
“fingerstyle” type Bluesman and his traditional Blues of the ‘30s band
might seem strange. But do we know David
Gogo that well? We will be listening to two full-fledged guitar
masters on the same stage, who shall very simply carry us to other times, and
also featuring The Griffintown Jug
Addicts, their washboard, their washtub bass which is a handmade bass
patented from a washtub, their jugs, their cigar box guitars and their five
string violins. They will re-create for you, for one night only, the vibes
from a bygone musical area when simplicity and fun came first in musical
creations that were of misleading simplicity in nature and themes, but so
complex in its polyphony and rhythms which were later to directly open the way
to the swing and again later to rock ‘n’ roll.

Michael Kaeshammer
Neat Coffee House,
Burnstown ON
Wednesday, November
26; tickets $60
Kaeshammer’s fiery
style incorporates elements of his early influences – the New Orleans sound of
Fats Waller, Art Tatum and James Booker – on tracks like ‘Kisses In Zanzibar’
and the high-energy, boogie fuelled romp, ‘Rendezvous’, he also takes his cue
from one of his own all-time favourite records, Robert Palmer’s Sneakin’ Sally
Through the Alley, recorded in New Orleans with influential local funk outfit,
The Meters, in 1974. In short, it’s the musical equivalent of Gumbo

FATHEAD’s JOHN MAYS
NEEDS HELP
******************************
From Al Lerman:
We are sad and concerned to
report that our friend and lead singer John Mays has been of ill health lately.
Several tests have been inconclusive and doctors are still trying to figure
what's wrong and how to fix it. Meanwhile, he has been unable to work, and he
receives no sick pay benefits nor health insurance from his day job at Rogers
Centre. To make matters worse, his wife's shifts at her job were recently
reduced and the family is now in dire need of funds. Your contribution big or
small is greatly appreciated. We look forward to John getting better and
rejoining us soon!
Donations can be made via
credit card or Paypal via our web:http://fathead.biz/help-john-mays

support.

CROWDFUNDING – THE
IBC BOOK!
******************************
Blues on Beale
Street: Memoirs of the International Blues Challenge is
a photo book accompanied by a series of personal experiences, short stories,
song lyrics and quotes collected from a vast variety of IBC attendees.
Photographer Jenn Ocken was inspired through eleven
years of returning and documenting the International Blues Challenge to create
a photo book. Together with writer Greg ‘Slim Lively’ Johnson, she reached out
to hundreds of IBC attendees, including but not limited to band members,
judges, producers, winners, and fans, and collected their own personal IBC
stories to use as a way to archive the happenings at the largest gathering of
blues bands in the world. The result – a photo book filled with emotionally
rich images and personal experiences that show just how unique this event
really is to the blues genre and the blues community.
20% of the book’s pre-order sales will
be donated to the Blues Foundation’s Generation Blues fund!

THE COBALT PRIZE for
CONTEMPORARY BLUES
COMPOSITION
******************************
The
Toronto Blues Society and Paul Reddick are proud to announce the creation of
The Cobalt Prize, a new Contemporary Blues Composition Award. The intention
behind the Cobalt Prize is to promote blues music through exploration of its
form. The winning composition will be judged on its ability to creatively
utilize blues traditions within the broad contemporary musical landscape. A
cash prize of $1000 will be presented to the winner at the upcoming Maple Blues
Awards on January 19, 2015.
Particular
attention will be paid to aspects of instrumentation, melodic invention, song
structure, lyrics, and production possibilities. The successful song will
refresh and enrich blues as an art form. “I want to encourage songwriters to
create new and relevant blues-based songs that can refresh and redefine the
blues form while attracting new fans to the genre”, says Reddick. The Cobalt
Prize submissions are now open to Canadian composers.

Terry Gillespie and Lyndell Montgomery
The Branch Restaurant, 15 Clothier St. East, Kemptville ON
Friday, December 12; $10
Terry
Gillespie has been called a musical Shaman, Canada's King of Roots Music and
Mr. Groove for good reason - his live performances are fascinating, entertaining
and captivating in a way that allows the audience to pay attention and not be
distracted from the music by egotistical showmanship and maniacal guitar
playing. He is both charismatic and soulful. His guitar is tasteful, his vocals
beautifully phrased and he is backed by an energy of sound that pulls people
off their chairs and onto the dance floor. Those in attendance at Terry
Gillespie shows are part of the show, with each audience member an integral
part of the band; they too become one with the music.
