REMEMBRANCE DAY
******************************
Shawna Caspi released a new
album in August called “Apartments for Lovers”. One of the songs on that album
is inspired by a radio interview she heard on CBC’s Day 6 with Master Corporal
Jonathan Woolvett and his dad.
Jonathan had been to
Afghanistan a couple of times and ultimately came home with PTSD, as many of
our guys do. When he went to the army to get help, they told him to just
"suck it up". So he started self-medicating with alcohol. After
losing his family and his home, he attempted to take his own life. Finally, his
father stepped in and *kidnapped*
him in order to get him off the military base and into a civilian treatment
centre. What struck Shawna most about the interview was how Jonathan kept
saying he wanted to get better so could continue to fulfill what he believed to
be his calling – he wanted to go back over and keep fighting.
Shawna Caspi is making her
song ‘I‘m Trying
To Leave′ available as a free download from now until
Remembrance Day and says “Feel free to grab it or share it or play it on your
radio show.”

Tim Williams
Irene’s Pub, 885
Bank Street
Wednesday, November
12
Tim
Williams is a
blues-based singer / songwriter / multi – instrumentalist. He is a 40 year
veteran of the ‘Roots’ music scene in North America, roots which stretch back
to the coffee-house scene of his native California in the mid 60′s.
Settling
in Canada in 1970, Tim is a studio musician, producer, and a performer in
constant demand. He has played Folk / Blues / Jazz festivals and concert halls
and clubs from Halifax, to Vancouver Island, to the Yukon.
Inspired
by the Hillbilly and Western Swing music he heard as a child, Tim absorbed late
Fifties Rhythm & Blues and Rock & Roll, Hawaiian and Mexican music,
early Sixties Folk, and Bluegrass “like a sponge” before discovering a passion
for traditional blues styles which was fueled by seeing many first generation
blues musicians live during the “Blues Boom” of the mid and late Sixties.”

Their
influences range from the iconic songwriting of Willie Dixon to the boundary
pushing of Jack White and Danger Mouse but their sound is distinctly their own,
smothered in greasy, gritty soul and imbued with funk. Shawn Hall provides the
rousing, rugged vocals and blues harmonica, while Matthew Rogers rips on the
guitar and pounds the skins with his feet. Their music is unapologetic. It
slaps you in the face and makes you sweat like it’s a sticky, summer night. It
cuts you to the core. It’s the blues played the way it was meant to be played.

CROWDFUNDING – THE
IBC BOOK!
******************************
Blues on Beale
Street: Memoirs of the International Blues Challenge is
a photo book accompanied by a series of personal experiences, short stories,
song lyrics and quotes collected from a vast variety of IBC attendees.
Photographer Jenn Ocken was inspired through eleven
years of returning and documenting the International Blues Challenge to create
a photo book. Together with writer Greg ‘Slim Lively’ Johnson, she reached out
to hundreds of IBC attendees, including but not limited to band members,
judges, producers, winners, and fans, and collected their own personal IBC
stories to use as a way to archive the happenings at the largest gathering of
blues bands in the world. The result – a photo book filled with emotionally
rich images and personal experiences that show just how unique this event
really is to the blues genre and the blues community.
20% of the book’s pre-order sales will
be donated to the Blues Foundation’s Generation Blues fund!

Son of a civil rights lawyer and a fiddle player, Doc
MacLean was exposed to country blues
and folklore at an early age. By his early teens he was
performing in coffeehouses and
festivals, and was appearing on radio and television
variety shows. Answering the call of the road, Doc traded a guitar for a 1948
Dodge and set out to explore America.
Performing on bottleneck and standard guitar, Doc
MacLean now appears solo and with
upright bass and percussion. While his lyrics are
mainly contemporary, his approach as a
guitarist-songster reflects not only his exposure to
southern string bands and jug bands, but also to Delta players and storytellers
such as Charlie Patton, Son House, and Sam Chatmon.

Kaeshammer’s fiery
style incorporates elements of his early influences – the New Orleans sound of
Fats Waller, Art Tatum and James Booker – on tracks like ‘Kisses In Zanzibar’
and the high-energy, boogie fuelled romp, ‘Rendezvous’, he also takes his cue
from one of his own all-time favourite records, Robert Palmer’s Sneakin’ Sally
Through the Alley, recorded in New Orleans with influential local funk outfit,
The Meters, in 1974. In short, it’s the musical equivalent of Gumbo

Bloodshot Bill
Irene’s Pub, 885
Bank Street
Friday, November 28
Bloodshot Bill started playing in his hometown of
Montreal, around 1998, with just a guitar and a stomp board. Since then, he has
had over 30 releases throughout Europe, USA and Canada – and still tours all
these places frequently. He was banned from entering the States for 5 years
(2006-2011) and made his first “(wel)comeback” show in USA at the Norton
Records 25th Anniversary Weekend, performing alongside such legendary (and
killer!) acts such as Andre Williams, The Sonics, 5678′s, Mighty Hannibal and The South Bay Surfers.
Since 2003 his hair has been slicked with his own brand of grease, “Nice ‘n’
Greasy”, and he plays his guitar through his custom made
one-of-a-kind Richtone Amp.
Usually travels alone as a one man band and absolutely wows the crowds
everywhere he plays!

Ginger St. James
The Standeasy @ the RCHA Club, 193 Ontario Street, Kingston ON
Saturday, November 15, @ 8:30 pm; $10 at the door
Ginger
St. James never disappoints and the country-roots infused music that she writes
turns heads like the girl herself. Many roads travelled and many lessons
learned add up to provide the tales she tells with the sweetest voice, or
petulant growl depending on the number. Her life in song is a refreshing
array of sock hop greasers, classic country and touching insights to a very
real story. In a world where everything is freeze dried and wrapped in
plastic, Ginger St. James is very much like the farmers market – full of
friendly, hard-working folk proudly offering the fruits of their labour,
colours and aromas embracing all who approach. You would be forgiven in
assuming such a diminutive lass would struggle in the hardscrabble music
business, but her charm talent and tenacity is as infectious as the grooves and
rhythms that make those finely crafted lyrics come to life with so much
energy. Music lovers know a good thing when they hear it, and Ginger St.
James has the package that’s flying off the shelves.

Chicago Blues Legend Studebaker John and The Hawks
The Standeasy @ the RCHA Club, 193 Ontario Street, Kingston ON
Friday, November 21 @ 8:30 pm; tickets $20 in advance
Studebaker John Grimaldi was born in an
Italian-American section of Chicago and started playing harmonica at age 7.
Under the spell of music he heard on Maxwell Street, Chicago’s famed blues
melting pot, John began performing as Studebaker John and the Hawks in the
‘70s. The band name referenced the Studebaker Hawk, a car he still owns today,
and was also intended as a tribute to this friend, J.B. Hutto and the Hawks.
John began playing guitar after a life-changing experience of seeing Hound Dog
Taylor and the Houserockers perform. As a songwriter and musician, Studebaker
John has emerged as a major creative form in the world of the blues today.
Ahead of the pack, with vision and foresight, creating a new standard and
landscape for this music’s future … with John at the wheel, the future is now!

heavily on their roots, River City Junction`s driving sound is deeply infused
with elements of yesteryear yet remains distinctively their own.
