RAINBOW 30TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION
The Distillery
Rainbow Bistro, 76 Murray Street
Sunday, September 28 @ 9 pm

The Distillery are a very charming blues trio that can appear to be deceptively mellow at times. Please don't relax too much as these three Toronto musicians bring out the sabre tooth tiger when you least expect it.

The Distillery began as a brainchild of Jordan Safer and Neil Hendry during a few discussions over beer and tea. Myrrhine “Wees” Faller joined soon after. Together they play a mixture of splendid original blues tunes and various classics old and new.

As the band takes their cues from Buddy Guy, Etta James and Koko Taylor (among many others) they attempt to respectfully flourish under these influences. If you catch them playing at a venue near you then you’ll simply leave twice the person you were before you came in. Their new EP is entitled “What You Told Me” and it is a very thick and useful brand of music.

Shawn Phillips
Les Brasseurs du Temps, 170 rue Montcalm, Gatineau QC
Sunday, September 28; show $30; show + 3-course meal $55

“Shawn Phillips is one of the most fascinating and enigmatic musicians to come out of the early ‘70s singer-songwriter boom. The mere fact that he was a musician as much as a singer and songwriter made him stand out, and helped him attract a dedicated following. His refusal to shape his music – which crosses between folk-rock, jazz, progressive, pop and classical – to anyone else’s expectations has allowed him to hold onto a large and dedicated cult following, without ever achieving the stardom that his talent seems to merit.”

After 3 million albums sold and a 40-year career, Shawn Phillips is back on the BDT stage to present his new album and his greatest hits. A rare visit that will thrill his many fans.

RAINBOW 30TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION
JW-Jones CD release party “Belmont Boulevard”
Rainbow Bistro, 76 Murray St
Saturday, September 27 @ 9:30 pm; $15.00 at the door

Ottawa’s JW-Jones, a high-energy young blues artist will be bringing his original brand of blues to the Rainbow Bistro in Ottawa as part of his extensive Canadian tour to celebrate the release of his 8th CD, “Belmont Boulevard” and recent signing to acclaimed American roots music label Blind Pig Records.

A hard-working and talented young artist, Jones is a Maple Blues Award winner, and was recently honoured by the Ottawa Business Journal and Ottawa Chamber of Commerce by being named one of the “Forty Under 40,” a salute to the region’s talented entrepreneurs who balance business achievement, professional expertise and community involvement.

For the songs on “Belmont Boulevard”, Jones decided for the first time to delve deep into his personal life and tell some of his stories that he’d never revealed before. He co-wrote many of the songs with Grammy-winner Tom Hambridge, a noted songwriter whose tunes have been recorded by Lynyrd Skynyrd, Rascal Flatts, and Delbert McClinton. “Digging deep into some very serious personal stories from my past and turning them into songs has been liberating and part of the healing process. I hope these songs resonate with listeners that have been through similar experiences,” said Jones.

Known for his high-energy, crowd-pleasing shows, Jones recently opened tours for the late Johnny Winter and one of his strongest influences, Jimmie Vaughan (about whom JW penned a song on the new album). Now, with his latest recording, he’s excited about reaching an even wider audience. Jones’ band features Jamie Holmes on drums and the heavy grooves of Laura Greenberg on bass, who consistently add a powerful energy to the stage.

Steve Groves’ Spanish Tour Going Away Party
Fatboys Southern Smokehouse, 34 Murray Street
Saturday, October 11 @ 8 pm

Hi to all my Ottawa friends. On Saturday, October 11, I will be performing at Fatboys Smokehouse at Murray Street, with Buddy McCann on Drums & Harmonica as well as vocals, and Owen Brown on Bass, and we'll be rocking' the blues from 8 to 11 pm!

This will be our last performance in Canada until I return to Ottawa next A
pril, and I want to turn it into a party. The venue does not actually pay the band, other than a $100.00 bar tab, so we need to charge a cover to pay the guys in the band and help me out with my trip expenses ... however I would like to give everyone who comes a copy of my new CD "Notes From The Underground". If you already have a copy of my CD, then I'd like to buy you a drink (from the $100.00 bar tab offered by the club).

We will start at 8 pm sharp and play two sets of originals and blues standards done in our style....

I'd like to see my friends new and old. I don't get much of a chance to see you guys, so this could be a great night. We can stay and have a bit of an after party. Socializing in real time!

This has been a great summer for me and my family… the birth of my grandson Kai, the release of my music and radio play worldwide, tours in Europe and Asia, meeting so many new friends as I travel. It's really something to cherish.

I hope I will see you at the "Steve Groves Spanish Tour Going Away Party" Saturday October 11. Come early. We start at 8 sharp.

Thanks and we'll see you soon,
Steve

Neat Coffee Shop, 1715 Calabogie Road, Burnstown ON
Sunday, October 12; tickets $35

Son of the late actors, Ruby Dee and Ossie Davis, Guy is a musician, composer, actor, director, and writer … but, most importantly, a bluesman. The blues permeates every corner of Davis' creativity. Throughout his career, he has dedicated himself to reviving the traditions of acoustic blues and bringing them to as many ears as possible through the material of the great blues masters, African American stories, and his own original songs, stories and performance pieces.

His influences are varied: Musically, he enjoyed such great blues musicians as Mississippi John Hurt and Buddy Guy. It was through Taj Mahal that he found his way to the old time blues. He also loved such diverse musicians as Fats Waller and Harry Belafonte.

Early acting roles included a lead role in the film "Beat Street" opposite Rae Dawn Chong and on television as ‘Dr. Josh Hall’ on "One Life to Live". He made his Broadway musical debut in 1991 in the Zora Neale Hurston/Langston Hughes collaboration "Mulebone",which featured the music of Taj Mahal. In 1993 he performed Off-Broadway as legendary blues player Robert Johnson in "Robert Johnson: Trick the Devil". He received rave reviews and became the 1993 winner of the Blues Foundation's "Keeping the Blues Alive Award”. More recently, Guy featured on Broadway in Million Dollar Quartet and a revival of Finian's Rainbow.

Wednesday, November 12

Tim Williams is a blues-based singer / songwriter / multi – instrumentalist. He is a 40 year veteran of the ‘Roots’ music scene in North America, roots which stretch back to the coffee-house scene of his native California in the mid 60′s.
Settling in Canada in 1970, Tim is a studio musician, producer, and a performer in constant demand. He has played Folk / Blues / Jazz festivals and concert halls and clubs from Halifax, to Vancouver Island, to the Yukon.
Inspired by the Hillbilly and Western Swing music he heard as a child, Tim absorbed late Fifties Rhythm & Blues and Rock & Roll, Hawaiian and Mexican music, early Sixties Folk, and Bluegrass “like a sponge” before discovering a passion for traditional blues styles which was fueled by seeing many first generation blues musicians live during the “Blues Boom” of the mid and late Sixties.”

Paul Reddick
Irene’s Pub, 885 Bank Street
Friday, November 21

Paul Reddick has long been a part of Canada’s rich roots music scene; he is one of the best harmonica players in the country…. His distinctive voice covers a wide emotional palette; always engaging; sometimes a shout, more often a conversationally vivid whisper. But it is Reddick’s songs – sometimes sweet, sometimes bitter, always thought-provking and rarely sentimental – and the passionate way he delivers them that best illustrate what the influential British magazine ‘Mojo’ described as his “wayward brilliance”. … he has been nominated for Junos and a Blues Music Award and he is a seven-time Maple Blues Award winner. And he continues to tour – across Canada and the United State, with two or three trips a year to Europe – with his hard-hitting band.

Bloodshot Bill
Irene’s Pub, 885 Bank Street
Friday, November 28

Bloodshot Bill started playing in his hometown of Montreal, around 1998, with just a guitar and a stomp board. Since then, he has had over 30 releases throughout Europe, USA and Canada – and still tours all these places frequently. He was banned from entering the States for 5 years (2006-2011) and made his first “(wel)comeback” show in USA at the Norton Records 25th Anniversary Weekend, performing alongside such legendary (and killer!) acts such as Andre Williams, The Sonics, 5678s, Mighty Hannibal and The South Bay Surfers. Since 2003 his hair has been slicked with his own brand of grease, “Nice ‘n’ Greasy”, and he plays his guitar through his custom made one-of-a-kind Richtone Amp.  Usually travels alone as a one man band and absolutely wows the crowds everywhere he plays!

Carolyn Fe Blues Collective
Irene’s Pub, 885 Bank Street
Saturday, November 29

Carolyn Fe Blues Collective offers up the Blues in all its shades …. A highly versatile, well-rounded performer, Carolyn Fe possesses the deep soul of an artist who has lived on the fringe for most of her life, and made the most of it as the true innovator she is, giving her music and lyrics an insight and depth that cannot be imitated and must be heard. She produces original material that contains lyrics with highly charged emotions that only the Blues can surrender – from extreme loss and anger to love-gone-bad or the languid sexiness of a hot summer night.
Backed by veteran musicians … the band’s delivery has phrasing that at evokes deep sensations from the begging for love, the hard-core-in-your-face of truth denied or the dreamy allure of pure seduction. (Exerpted from a review by Sandy Graham in Cashbox)
The Carolyn Fe Blues Collective is touring in support of their 3rd release, "Bad Taboo".

Dan Deslauriers Band
The Standeasy @ the RCHA Club, 193 Ontario Street, Kingston ON
Friday, October 3 @ 8:30 pm; $5 at the door

Guitarist and vocalist Dan Deslauriers has long been a fixture in the Ottawa music scene, both as a side and front man of various genres of bands. Although his skill set and talent have extraordinary range, his passion is the blues—and it shows. He is renowned for the fire and honesty that he expresses with his voice and a guitar, as well as his technical skill and the unique ways in which his extensive musical knowledge seeps into the blues. In both his original music and his interpretations of classics, he draws on diverse influences such as country, jazz, roots, and rock. A versatile and creative guitarist, Deslauriers frequently combines playing styles not always found in the blues, creating new and exciting interpretations.

Deslauriers, bass player Cory Shvets, and drummer Ken Reynolds frequently play in and around Ottawa, and are regularly invited to play in Kingston. The trio was a finalist in the 2013 Ottawa Blues Society Road to Memphis band competition. Prior to that, Deslauriers traded electric for acoustic and earned himself a berth in the finals for the 2011 Ottawa Blues Society Road to Memphis solo/duo competition. In April 2014, Deslauriers released “City Fever”, an exciting new blues CD that showcases ten of his many original blues songs.

Although a trio, the Dan Deslauriers band’s sound fills the room like a six-piece band, and they get the audience dancing and cheering. Come out to a Dan Deslauriers show and experience a group of seasoned musicians not just performing, but evolving the blues!

Chris Antonik
The Standeasy @ the RCHA Club, 193 Ontario Street, Kingston ON
Saturday, November 1 @ 8:30 pm; $15 by reservation

In 2010, Toronto-based blues guitarist, singer and songwriter Chris Antonik arrived onto the National and International blues scene with his self-titled debut album which received widespread critical acclaim, placed in the Roots Music Report Top 100 charts for over a year, and garnered Antonik a nomination for Best New Artist of the Year at Canada’s national Maple Blues Awards. In 2010, in its year-end review, British Columbia’s Blues Underground Network deemed Chris ‘The Future of the Blues.’

After extensive touring and major blues festival appearances in Canada in 2011 and 2012, Chris returned with his highly anticipated and critically-acclaimed follow-up “Better For You” in March 2013, which solidified Chris’ reputation as one of Canada's hottest young blues artists.

To live up to the accolades on stage, Chris delivers an unbridled and passionate live performance that gives audiences more than their money’s worth and leaves them wanting more. An exceptional guitarist who has been compared to Clapton, a soulful singer and an inventive songwriter, Chris is the real deal.

Ginger St. James
The Standeasy @ the RCHA Club, 193 Ontario Street, Kingston ON
Saturday, November 15, @ 8:30 pm; $10 at the door

Ginger St. James never disappoints and the country-roots infused music that she writes turns heads like the girl herself.  Many roads travelled and many lessons learned add up to provide the tales she tells with the sweetest voice, or petulant growl depending on the number.  Her life in song is a refreshing array of sock hop greasers, classic country and touching insights to a very real story.  In a world where everything is freeze dried and wrapped in plastic, Ginger St. James is very much like the farmers market – full of friendly, hard-working folk proudly offering the fruits of their labour, colours and aromas embracing all who approach.  You would be forgiven in assuming such a diminutive lass would struggle in the hardscrabble music business, but her charm talent and tenacity is as infectious as the grooves and rhythms that make those finely crafted lyrics come to life with so much energy.  Music lovers know a good thing when they hear it, and Ginger St. James has the package that’s flying off the shelves.
