Thank You and Full Steam Ahead!
On July 28, hundreds of folks gathered in Southminster
church to celebrate and support the Ottawa Folklore Centre. Over 600 wonderful
people paid $25 dollars to listen to some of the best music ever to come out of
the nation’s capital. Sneezy Waters, Lynn Miles, Chris MacLean, James
Keelaghan, Terry Tufts, Kathrine Briggs, Finest Kind, Bill Garrett, Doug McArthur,
Paul Hornbeck, James Stephens, Rebecca Campbell and, of course, wee Rowan
Meyer, our busking piper. We had a silent auction that raised thousands of
dollars. Friends of the Folklore Centre donated more through buying virtual
tickets and just sending in cheques.
I was, am and will always be so overwhelmed by your offerings…all of you. For the past 38 years, I have run an inclusive, open-hearted, relevant, and ethical business that offers opportunities for everyone to discover music in their lives and to share it with anyone who comes through the doors. A business that has drawn to it people with musical ability, creativity and generosity of spirit. A business that is considered a value to the community and has done so for decades. The result?
Evidently a business that,when it goes though a rocky patch, can ask for help and receive it in spades.

support of the Folklore Centre and receive recognition in our community for the
help.
Our school of music is offering more courses than ever for everything from autoharp lessons to Zambian marimba classes. We have after school clubs for kids (uke and fiddle), daytime classes for stay-at-homes and retirees (uke, singing), adult evening courses, an expanded fiddle program, new choir opportunities, and so much more.
We are expanding our on-line lessons and streamed instruction to help you fulfill your musical dreams.
We are also planning a concert series that will feature artists in support of the Ottawa Folklore Centre.

Considered one of Montreal’s most electrifying
guitarists by local press and groove aficionados, Cécile Doo-Kingué blends
blues, soul and afro-folk to create a unique sound. Born in New York City,
first generation from Cameroon, she has lived in France, USA and is now an
adopted Montrealer. This meeting of cultures is reflected in the eclecticism of
her music. Her bewitching fretwork and deep, suave voice are no longer secret
to Montreal’s night-owls. On record or on stage, Cécile Doo-Kingué takes us
deep into a series of musical grooves. In June 2010, she released her
self-produced debut solo album “Freedom Calling” to critical acclaim. The
12-track collection is a smooth concoction of blues, soul and afro-folk on
which one can surf to the end of the world, life and love. From one song to the
next, her mastery is undeniable. While she tames the blues with her sweet
guitar, she opens the door to ‘60s and ‘70s soul, and afro rhythms. Lyrically,
Cécile is as vulnerable , as she is socially aware, seductive or even funny.
“Freedom Calling” was nominated for 3 Sounds of Blackness Awards as well as for
a Lys Blues for Best Blues-Associated Album. Cécile was also awarded one of
five 2010 Centre St-Ambroise Bursaries. In 2011, CBC commissioned Cécile to write
a song on immigration. Regardless of subject matter or mood, Cécile captivates
you with sincerity while her sound soothes body and soul.

DAVE ‘HURRICANE’
HOERL UPDATE

On June 24th, 2014 Canadian
blues luminary and founding member of the popular jump-blues band The Twisters,
Dave ‘Hurricane’ Hoerl, released
his first solo recording, “Un-Twisted”.
Shortly before the official release of “Un-Twisted”, Dave suffered a massive stroke that left him
hospitalized and fighting for his life. As with many victims of stroke, the
future is uncertain. He is currently under great care in hospital and will soon
be moved to a long-term care facility.
Dave ‘Hurricane’ Hoerl is a
stalwart supporter of the blues music community who has helped put Canadian
blues music on the map. The blues community in Canada is once again coming
together to help out a friend in need.
A benefit concert is being
planned for September 14 in Vancouver at Pat's Pub (details TBA) and a PayPal account has been set up where
donations are being accepted to help cover the cost of Hoerl's care.

has been set up for friends and fans to get information about Dave’s music,
news and upcoming benefits.

status through years of hard work and constant touring. It all started with a
chance meeting in the mid-1970s with legendary bluesman Albert Collins, who offered Montoya a gig as his drummer. Five
years later, British blues icon John
Mayall happened to catch Montoya at a jam session and was blown away.
Mayall recruited him as his guitarist in the legendary Bluesbreakers, and Montoya spent the next 10 years touring
non-stop, proving him to be a world-class guitar master in one of the most
renowned blues bands in existence. The rest is History!

Rideau - the famous Dinner & Show Fundraiser Series featuring some of
Canada's best Blues artists which takes place once a month every year from
