SPECIAL EVENTS THIS WEEK

Ray Bonneville
Irene’s Pub, 885 Bank Street
Wednesday, August 13 @ 8 pm

“On his 4th Red House Records album, “Easy Gone”, Ray Bonneville’s … guitar work shimmers like stars emerging at dusk. His voice carries the rich, natural timbre of time, though underneath that pearl-like smoothness, one hears its gritty core. His harmonica rhythms add even more texture to his sound. …. “The whole songwriting thing, to me, is mysterious, and I want to keep it that way,” Bonneville says. Ultimately, what matters is knowing how to translate the mystery into music and that, he understands perfectly.”

HEARTS ON THE PIANO
An Evening with Megan Jerome (Ottawa) and Mike Evin (Toronto)
GigSpace Performance Studio, 953 Gladstone Avenue
Saturday, August 16 @ 7:300 pm; tickets $20

Megan Jerome and Mike Evin are singer-songwriters who build their words and music around the piano. They are coming together around GigSpace's grand piano for an intimate evening of storytelling and hooks. If you dig honest, humorous and hopeful piano songs that will stick in your head and keep you buzzing until the morning, then you will not want to miss this "one night only" performance.
www.gigspaceottawa.com

Like Earth Wind and Fire? You might love Megan Jerome! Known for her eclectic and soulful piano songs, Megan's music and performances are arty, funny, sparse and sexy. Following family singsongs and formal classical and jazz piano training, Megan has self-produced four albums that have delighted critics and audiences alike, topping CBC and community radio station charts nationwide. Megan recently won the Galaxie Rising Star Award.
So what does this have to do with Earth Wind and Fire? Two years ago, when Bruce Hornsby played the Ottawa Folkfest, Megan was first on the bill. She played the concert that won her the Rising Star Award. And who watched her show from the wings, smiling, clapping and laughing along? Who told her he loved her music?? None other than Sonny Emory, drummer of Earth Wind and Fire, who was touring with Bruce!

Mike Evin's brand of piano pop is soulful, catchy and disarming. Mike often gets mistaken for a Creeggan brother. Though the physical similarities between him and Jim Creeggan (Barenaked Ladies bassist) are considerable, it's truly a sense of joy and musicianship that connects Mike with Jim and his brother Andy (an original BNL member).
The Brothers Creeggan produced Mike's second album back in 2005. Mike continues to collaborate with The Creeggans and Barenaked Ladies, who invited him twice to perform on their Ships & Dip cruise. He’s also been lucky to write and perform with one of his idols, Ron Sexsmith. Other artists he’s shared the stage with include Sarah Harmer, Amy Millan and Dan Mangan. Since 2001, Mike’s released five albums, steadily grown a loyal grassroots following and has been played regularly on CBC. Mike's forthcoming album (date TBA) is produced by Howie Beck (Feist, Walk Off The Earth).

AREA HIGHLIGHTS THIS WEEK
************************************
Jordan John in Concert
Black Sheep Inn, Wakefield QC
Friday, August 15 @ 8:30 pm

“To say that vocal sensation Jordan John is a more powerful and polished lead vocalist and multi-instrumentalist than many players twice his age would tell just a fraction of the story. He has already compiled a longer list of credits, and displays more assuredness and maturity, than many performers twice his age. Adept on drums, keyboards, guitar and bass, he distills the blues, soul and rhythm & blues into a sound that is both solidly traditional and a bold departure from the electronically generated music that has saturated the pop charts in recent years. ….
Delivering a refined essence of traditional based Blues, Soul & Rhythm ‘n’ Blues, this musical dynamo adds a breath of fresh air to the contemporary music landscape!”
**********
Melanie Brulée
The Black Sheep Inn, Wakefield QC
Saturday, August 16

An emerging artist whose music is best described as “folk-pop-cabaret” — a marriage between Edith Piaf and Stevie Nicks, Melanie Brulée moved to Toronto three years ago after spending seven years back and forth between Australia and Canada with her folk-pop band General Electryk, winner of the local Seeker 2010 Musician of the Year Award. Since she moved to Toronto, she’s formed a new band,  released her debut EP “Sucré/Salé”, sings with a gritty country group called the Ole Fashion, and is a founding member of a hot new all-female independent collective called Ladies In Waiting (alongside Andrea Ramolo, Cindy Doire, Sarah Burton, Kristin Sweetland and Tricia Foster).

She is a taking a break between studio sessionsshe’s working on an entirely French album, “Débridée”, to be released in March 2015 – to head down the St. Lawrence.

With songs in French and English, this woman is not afraid to push boundaries, but the material is accessible, pointed and smart. She is an alert, active and entertaining performer who involves and charms audiences. Previous knowledge of French is not necessary though. The music is textured, funky and moody and crosses language barriers.

DAVE ‘HURRICANE’ HOERL UPDATE
*********************************
On June 24th, 2014 Canadian blues luminary and founding member of the popular jump-blues band The Twisters, Dave ‘Hurricane’ Hoerl, released his first solo recording, “Un-Twisted”.  Shortly before the official release of “Un-Twisted”, Dave suffered a massive stroke that left him hospitalized and fighting for his life. As with many victims of stroke, the future is uncertain. He is currently under great care in hospital and will soon be moved to a long-term care facility.

Dave ‘Hurricane’ Hoerl is a stalwart supporter of the blues music community who has helped put Canadian blues music on the map. The blues community in Canada is once again coming together to help out a friend in need.

A benefit concert is being planned for September 14 in Vancouver at Pat's Pub (details TBA) and a PayPal account has been set up where donations are being accepted to help cover the cost of Hoerl's care.

A Facebook page has been set up for friends and fans to get information about Dave’s music, news and upcoming benefits.

"I would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of you for the kindness, prayers and support shown to David and our family during this extremely difficult time. Even though we needed our privacy these past eight weeks, it has not gone un-noticed how much love has been shown for David.  Words cannot express adequately enough how much this has meant to us.  Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for caring so much for the man that means the world to us.  It helps more than you know." -Lynda & David Hoerl & Family

CROWDFUNDING OPPORTUNITIES
*********************************
Rise Again: A Hurricane Can't Hold Us Down
The Stan Rogers Folk Festival

The 2014 Stan Rogers Folk Festival, scheduled for July 4-6, was cancelled at the last minute, faced with hurricane winds and rain. At the time of the decision, weather experts predicted the hurricane would bring 100 km/h winds and torrential rains to Nova Scotia. The staff, board of directors and volunteer leaders made this tough decision in the interest of public safety. A camping-based festival simply cannot safely operate in a hurricane or tropical storm. On Saturday, July 5, the storm had made landfall in Nova Scotia and 50,000 homes had lost power. The storm went on to bring rain and 70 km/h+ winds to Canso and widespread damage to Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island.

This was to be the 18th annual festival. It’s a major challenge for the organization to face and manage, but we are committed to working through this and staging the biggest and best festival ever in 2015. There has been an amazing show of support and endorsement for this decision by our ticket buyers, sponsors, funders, artists and dozens of festivals and organizations across the country. Many have asked how they can make donations to help with the cancellation costs. We've created a crowd funding campaign https://fundrazr.com/campaigns/aoL47 to provide a vehicle for donations to be made. Donations will be used to fund the $70 k+ in cancellation costs we are facing. [The campaign ends September 30, 2014 and has raised just under $27,000 to date.]

The Chedabucto Bay Folk Society, the festival's parent organization, is a N.S. Not for Profit Organization and Federal Charity. Charitable donation receipts can be issued for all donations. Those donating will receive regular updates on funds raised and the use of those funds.

Calabogie Blues and Ribfest
Calabogie Peaks, Calabogie ON
August 15-17

Friday, August 15
The 24th Street Wailers
The 24th Street Wailers are touring heavily in support of their latest release, “Wicked”, currently in rotation on hundreds of stations around the world. On July 5, they played the Thunder Bay Blues Festival ‘After’ Party at the Apollo and were joined for their encore by Jimmie Vaughan. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rg9EUyxCcX8
Jesse Whiteley joined the band earlier this year and his piano talent, along with the ‘core’ Wailers, Maple Blues Award-winning Jon Wong on saxophone, Mike Archer on bass and vocals, Emily Burgess on guitar and front-woman Lindsay Beaver on drums, vocals and guitar, makes this band hotter than ever! Although they’re Ottawa favourites at Irene’s Pub, and the ‘adopted kids’ of the Ottawa Blues Society, this will be their first appearance at the Calabogie Blues & Ribfest.

Anthony Gomes
“Here is a band that is moving rapidly into the future, but is experienced enough to learn from the masters of the past. Their music is a raw example of the old Delta-style blues mixed with some very original guitar phrasings. Anthony Gomes (lead singer and lead guitarist) formed a band that is infectious. They had their first public appearance in Chicago in April of 1997, and everyone in the industry was talking about the Anthony Gomes Band. In the spring of 1998 they took first place inBuddy Guy's Legends first annual "Best Unsigned Blues Band" competition, winning $10,000 in prizes.  Guy himself was on hand to congratulate them. To be singled out as the top blues band in the Chicago area is a great honour that has helped gain them national and regional attention. …. If you are searching for some of the hottest Delta-style blues music, blended with Texas blues guitar, done with a Jimi Hendrix finesse, and coming from a native Chicago blues band, then the Anthony Gomes Band is your answer.” (info from allmusic.com, Larry Belanger)
From his show at Callahan’s Music Hall, May 9

David Wilcox
David Wilcox is a brilliant song writer, a great singer, and one of the hottest guitar players in the world. He first made his name as a wild, live performer and then as a first-rate recording artist whose work, from "Out Of The Woods" (1980) to his most recent release, "Boy In The Boat" (2007), stands the test of time.
“A guitar virtuoso who combines his playing with cleverly crafted lyrics, often laced with sexual innuendo, Wilcox has been rocking for four decades. … Long gone are the days when, as a huge favourite on the college circuit, Wilcox would play more than 300 dates a year. He says he's now at a point in his career where he can cherry pick his performances and plays about 30 gigs a year.”

Saturday, August 16
Wicked Grin
“Combine a lead singer/songwriter's fresh take on gritty blues and killer guitar, a veteran harp player, raucous and wailing in all the right places, a super tight bassist, and a hot young drummer and you get full-tilt blues with a groove that just won't quit: Blues With Bite!”
Ottawa Blues Society’s entry in last year’s International Blues Challenge, they were runners up at this year’s Toronto Blues Society New Talent Search Finals, July 5 at Monarch’s Pub.

Raoul & the Big Time
Canterbury High School graduate, singer/actor/multi-instrumentalist Raoul Bhaneja formed Raoul and the Big Time in July 1998. “Raoul and The Big Time are well known for their energetic mix of “Toronto / Chicago / Hollywood” blues influenced by the Chess blues sound of the 1950s and contemporary West Coast jump harmonica Blues.” Their new release, “Hollywood Boulevard” is rich and authentic, reminiscent of the sounds that inspired the recording all while showcasing their originality and fresh approach to classic blues styles. “ (info courtesy of Sarah French Publicity)

Charlie A’Court
If you go down to the crossroads of roots and soul, you’ll find singer, songwriter and guitarist Charlie A’Court, whose honest purpose in life is to connect people, one emotion at a time. Fuelled by emotion and a desire for delivering powerful music, he is undoubtedly one of Canada’s new generation of fresh singer/songwriters, attracting fans internationally with gutsy vocals and his colourful yet solid guitar playing.
On Galaxie Radio’s 2013 Top 50 (the most played albums of 2013 on Galaxie’s The Blues channel), Charlie A’Court’s “Triumph & Disaster”, which garnered him two 2013 East Coast Music Awards, ranked number 18 on a list which included a mix of other Canadian and international artists.
Charlie performed at the Maple Blues Awards ceremony in Toronto on January 20 and, thanks to Kimberly Mallett, here’s a video of that performance. (Check out his back-up singers!) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dJ7ZwnGOUrs

Paul Deslauriers Band
A virtuoso guitarist and a powerful and expressive singer, Paul DesLauriers is part of Canada’s musical elite. Winner of the Maple Blues Award for Guitarist of the Year (Jan. 2014) he is backed by masterful powerhouse rhythm section of Greg Morency (bass) and Sam Harrisson (drums). The newest album of original music (self-titled) from these three pillars of the Quebec Blues scene captures the subtlety and intensity, the unique interplay and excitement they are known for.
From the CD release in at Lola’s in Cornwall

Jimmie Vaughan
Jimmie Vaughan’s style as a player, songwriter and bandleader can be thought of as an amalgamation of so many influences. Known for his deceptively simple yet complex attack, his clean, uncluttered style capitalizes on conveying the emotion and message within the music, He utilizes raw emotion, simplicity, and an elegance that is powerful and accessible, yet communicates exactly what he feels inside. Yet for all his accomplishments and the admiration he has earned, Jimmie Vaughan remains modest when it comes to his life and work. “I’m just trying to have fun like everyone else,” he concludes. “I’ve been playing since I was 13. I play every day. I’ve never stopped. I can’t imagine that I could exist without it.”
From the Thunder Bay Blues Fest
No video on this (I wish!) but ‘Don’t Let The Sun Set’ is classic Jimmie Vaughan!

Jerome Godboo
Jerome Godboo is a singer and songwriter, who has been a full-time musician since 1986, when he won an Ottawa Bluesfest contest that helped launch his career and triggered a move to Toronto. A harmonica virtuoso, he wears his trademark toolbelt with a harp in every key; he also plays an innovative 30-reed harmonica, invented by UK-based harmonica master Brendan Power, who also developed a new tuning called the PowerBender. Jerome was the recipient of the “Best Harmonica Player” award at the 2014 International Blues Challenge in Memphis, January 2014.

Montreal Jazz Festival, 2013

Dawn Tyler Watson & Ben Racine Band
Hailed as ‘Montreal’s Queen of the Blues’, singer, songwriter and actress Dawn Tyler Watson commands both stage and screen with her natural presence and silky vocals. A multi-Maple Blues Award winner for Female Vocalist of the year, she is familiar to Ottawa area blues fans with her duo partner, Paul Deslauriers. Dawn Tyler Watson appears at this year’s Calabogie Blues and Ribfest backed by the Ben Racine Band.
Dawn Tyler Watson & Paul Deslauriers, Montreal Jazz Festival 2013

One of the ‘discoveries’ from last year’s Calabogie Blues and Ribfest, Ben Racine is back with his soulful voice and his crack band. You’ll hear swing … rockabilly … rock 'n' roll … and blues, of course. They’ll be backing Dawn Tyler Watson.
Ben Racine Band, July 2013

Kelly Ritchey
The Kelly Richey Band features heavy, riff-soaked blues guitar driven head first into monster funk bass lines and rock/hip hop infused backbeats. Kelly Richey’s distinctive, burn-up-the-fretboard guitar work and husky vocals meet up with the legendary Freekbass, one of the best funk bassists in the music world today, and drummer Big Bamn, a powerhouse drummer who lays down solid, in-the-pocket grooves that forge the backbone for Freekbass and Richey to fly on. These masterful players bring unparalleled energy and brilliant musicianship to the stage, deftly melding blues, rock, and funk for a dizzyingly potent wall of sound – a powerful blues- rock/funk power trio that aims to rock the house.
