You might love Megan Jerome! Known for her eclectic and soulful piano songs,
Megan's music and performances are arty, funny, sparse and sexy. Following
family singsongs and formal classical and jazz piano training, Megan has
self-produced four albums that have delighted critics and audiences alike,
topping CBC and community radio station charts nationwide. Megan recently won
the Galaxie Rising Star Award.

does this have to do with Earth Wind and Fire?
Two years ago, when Bruce Hornsby played
the Ottawa Folkfest, Megan was first on the bill. She played the concert
that won her the Rising Star Award. And who watched her show from the wings,
smiling, clapping and laughing along? Who told her he loved her music?? None
other than Sonny Emory, drummer of Earth Wind and Fire, who was touring with
Bruce!
Mike Evin's brand of piano
pop is soulful, catchy and disarming. Mike often gets mistaken for a Creeggan
brother. Though the physical similarities between him and Jim Creeggan
(Barenaked Ladies bassist) are considerable, it's truly a sense of joy and
musicianship that connects Mike with Jim and his brother Andy (an original BNL
member).

emerging artist whose music is best described as “folk-pop-cabaret” — a
marriage between Edith Piaf and Stevie Nicks, Melanie Brulée moved to Toronto
three years ago after spending seven years back and forth between Australia and
Canada with her folk-pop band General Electryk, winner of the local Seeker 2010
Musician of the Year Award. Since she moved to Toronto, she’s formed a new
band, released her debut EP “Sucré/Salé”,
sings with a gritty country group called the Ole Fashion, and is a founding
member of a hot new all-female independent collective called Ladies In Waiting
(alongside Andrea Ramolo, Cindy Doire, Sarah Burton, Kristin Sweetland and
Tricia Foster).
She is a
taking a break between studio sessions – she’s working on an entirely French album, “Débridée”, to be
released in March 2015 – to head down the St. Lawrence.
With songs in French and
English, this woman is not afraid to push boundaries, but the material is
accessible, pointed and smart. She is an alert, active and entertaining
performer who involves and charms audiences. Previous knowledge of French is
not necessary though. The music is textured, funky and moody and crosses
language barriers.

On June 24th, 2014 Canadian
blues luminary and founding member of the popular jump-blues band The Twisters,
Dave ‘Hurricane’ Hoerl, released
his first solo recording, “Un-Twisted”.
Shortly before the official release of “Un-Twisted”, Dave suffered a massive stroke that left him
hospitalized and fighting for his life. As with many victims of stroke, the future
is uncertain. He is currently under great care in hospital and will soon be
moved to a long-term care facility.
Dave ‘Hurricane’ Hoerl is a
stalwart supporter of the blues music community who has helped put Canadian
blues music on the map. The blues community in Canada is once again coming
together to help out a friend in need.
A benefit concert is being
planned for September 14 in Vancouver at Pat's Pub (details TBA) and a PayPal account has been set up where
donations are being accepted to help cover the cost of Hoerl's care.
A Facebook page has
been set up for friends and fans to get information about Dave’s music, news
and upcoming benefits.

Rise Again: A Hurricane Can't
Hold Us Down
The Stan Rogers Folk Festival
The 2014 Stan Rogers Folk Festival, scheduled for
July 4-6, was cancelled at the last minute, faced with hurricane winds and
rain. At the time of the decision, weather experts predicted the hurricane
would bring 100 km/h winds and torrential rains to Nova Scotia. The staff,
board of directors and volunteer leaders made this tough decision in the
interest of public safety. A camping-based festival simply cannot safely
operate in a hurricane or tropical storm. On Saturday, July 5, the storm
had made landfall in Nova Scotia and 50,000 homes had lost
power. The storm went on to bring rain and 70 km/h+ winds to Canso and
widespread damage to Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island.
This was to be the 18th annual festival. It’s a major challenge for the organization to face and manage, but we are committed to working through this and staging the biggest and best festival ever in 2015. There has been an amazing show of support and endorsement for this decision by our ticket buyers, sponsors, funders, artists and dozens of festivals and organizations across the country. Many have asked how they can make donations to help with the cancellation costs. We've created a crowd funding campaign https://fundrazr.com/campaigns/aoL47 to provide a vehicle for donations to be made. Donations will be used to fund the $70 k+ in cancellation costs we are facing. [The campaign ends September 30, 2014 and has raised just under $27,000 to date.]

David Wilcox
David Wilcox is a brilliant
song writer, a great singer, and one of the hottest guitar players in the
world. He first made his name as a wild, live performer and then as a
first-rate recording artist whose work, from "Out Of The Woods"
(1980) to his most recent release, "Boy In The Boat" (2007), stands
the test of time.

Charlie A’Court
If you go down to the crossroads of
roots and soul, you’ll find singer, songwriter and guitarist Charlie A’Court,

Jerome Godboo
Jerome Godboo is a singer
and songwriter, who has been a full-time musician since 1986, when he won an
Ottawa Bluesfest contest that helped launch his career and triggered a move to
Toronto. A harmonica virtuoso, he wears
his trademark toolbelt with a harp in every key; he also plays an innovative
30-reed harmonica, invented by UK-based harmonica master Brendan Power, who
also developed a new tuning called the PowerBender. Jerome was the
recipient of the “Best Harmonica Player” award at the 2014 International Blues
Challenge in Memphis, January 2014.

Chris Smither is an exceptional blues and folk artist
with more than 15 albums to his credit. He receives ongoing praise for his
dazzling guitar work, his distinctive voice and his profoundly beautiful
songwriting. His rhythmic finger-picking style, strongly influenced by the
playing of Mississippi John Hurt and Lightnin’ Hopkins, is layered over the
ever-present backbeat of his tapping feet. Original from New Orleans and currently
based in Boston, Chris Smither recently recorded a two-CD retrospective of his
best-loved songs.

and reissued blues and rhythm and blues tracks on wax”, alternating with “live
blues and R&B for a Sunday night” in the last half hour of the show. On the
last Sunday of every month, the show goes “down in the delta” for a selection
of acoustic blues tracks in the final half hour of the program.

inspired by "the first post-modernists of American music - Duke Ellington,
Sun Ra, Parliament Funkadelic and the Art Ensemble of Chicago".
