DAVE ‘HURRICANE’ HOERL UPDATE
*********************************
On June 24th, 2014 Canadian blues luminary and founding member of the popular jump-blues band The Twisters, Dave ‘Hurricane’ Hoerl, released his first solo recording, “Un-Twisted”.  Shortly before the official release of “Un-Twisted”, Dave suffered a massive stroke that left him hospitalized and fighting for his life. As with many victims of stroke, the future is uncertain. He is currently under great care in hospital and will soon be moved to a long-term care facility.

Dave ‘Hurricane’ Hoerl is a stalwart supporter of the blues music community who has helped put Canadian blues music on the map. The blues community in Canada is once again coming together to help out a friend in need.

A benefit concert is being planned for September 14 in Vancouver at Pat's Pub (details TBA) and a PayPal account has been set up where donations are being accepted to help cover the cost of Hoerl's care.

A Facebook page has been set up for friends and fans to get information about Dave’s music, news and upcoming benefits.

"I would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of you for the kindness, prayers and support shown to David and our family during this extremely difficult time. Even though we needed our privacy these past eight weeks, it has not gone un-noticed how much love has been shown for David.  Words cannot express adequately enough how much this has meant to us.  Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for caring so much for the man that means the world to us.  It helps more than you know." -Lynda & David Hoerl & Family

Music By The Bay Live presents
Coco Montoya
St. Francis Centre, 78 Church Street S., Ajax ON
Friday, September 12 @ 8 pm (doors 7 pm); tickets $45 (advance)

From his early days as a drummer to his current status as one of the top-drawing guitarists and vocalists on the blues-rock scene, Coco Montoya earned his status through years of hard work and constant touring. It all started with a chance meeting in the mid-1970s with legendary bluesman Albert Collins, who offered Montoya a gig as his drummer. Five years later, British blues icon John Mayall happened to catch Montoya at a jam session and was blown away. Mayall recruited him as his guitarist in the legendary Bluesbreakers, and Montoya spent the next 10 years touring non-stop, proving him to be a world-class guitar master in one of the most renowned blues bands in existence. The rest is History!

Original from New Orleans and currently based in Boston, Chris Smither recently recorded a two-CD retrospective of his best-loved songs.

Hamilton, Ontario based bluesman and JUNO Winner Steve Strongman is making waves internationally and at home in Canada.”A Natural Fact” was most unusual for Hamilton’s Steve Strongman and not just for winning the JUNO award. It was an acoustic album from an artist known for his electric shows. To say that news of his next disc was eagerly anticipated is a major understatement. Well, here’s the news: “Let Me Prove It To You” was released on May 13, it’s electric (mostly) and it’s great. (John Valentyn, Toronto Blues Society’s newsletter, ‘Mapleblues’)

Rise Again: A Hurricane Can't Hold Us Down
The Stan Rogers Folk Festival

The 2014 Stan Rogers Folk Festival, scheduled for July 4-6, was cancelled at the last minute, faced with hurricane winds and rain. At the time of the decision, weather experts predicted the hurricane would bring 100 km/h winds and torrential rains to Nova Scotia. The staff, board of directors and volunteer leaders made this tough decision in the interest of public safety. A camping-based festival simply cannot safely operate in a hurricane or tropical storm. On Saturday, July 5, the storm had made landfall in Nova Scotia and 50,000 homes had lost power. The storm went on to bring rain and 70 km/h+ winds to Canso and widespread damage to Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island.

This was to be the 18th annual festival. It’s a major challenge for the organization to face and manage, but we are committed to working through this and staging the biggest and best festival ever in 2015. There has been an amazing show of support and endorsement for this decision by our ticket buyers, sponsors, funders, artists and dozens of festivals and organizations across the country. Many have asked how they can make donations to help with the cancellation costs. We've created a crowd funding campaign https://fundrazr.com/campaigns/aoL47 to provide a vehicle for donations to be made. Donations will be used to fund the $70 k+ in cancellation costs we are facing. [The campaign ends September 30, 2014 and has raised just under $27,000 to date.]

The Chedabucto Bay Folk Society, the festival's parent organization, is a N.S. Not for Profit Organization and Federal Charity. Charitable donation receipts can be issued for all donations. Those donating will receive regular updates on funds raised and the use of those funds.
