Soulstack
Rainbow Bistro, 76 Murray Street
Saturday, July 5 @ 10:30 pm
Luring music fans away from
the Bluesfest Fairgrounds is not an easy task, so this appearance, during the
Ottawa Bluesfest, will be an unofficial 'after party' for Bluesfest Concert
attendees who want to continue the party into the night, at Ottawa's favourite
Roots and Blues Venue, The Rainbow Bistro. "We just want to keep the party
going in to the wee hours" says Stacie Sivyer of the Rainbow, "The
plan is to have the band hit the stage around 10:30 pm for a full night of
music.... Soulstack plays long sets and keeps the dance floor grooving all
night with their innovative roots music".
Soulstack’s previous visit to
Ottawa this past spring found them performing to capacity crowds at the Rainbow
Bistro, the Atomic Rooster and a sold out performance at Greenfields in
Barrhaven for "live-to-air" recording session called
"StudioDawg" with DawgFM.
In January 2014, Soulstack
went head to head with Ottawa's MonkeyJunk
for the Electric Act Award at the Maple Blues Awards, and although lost out to
Ottawa’s favorite band; Soulstack’s drummer, Tom Bona, acquired his 5th Award for Drummer of the
Year. Bona has been seen in Ottawa many times in the past having played drums
for Sue Foley, Tony D, Steve Marriner,
Hennessey, and currently with Raoul and the Big Time.
Soulstack's acclaimed stage performances keep the crowds fully entertained with a their modern roots music in nouveau-retro-style, inspired by sweaty sounds and throbbing rhythms, all performed with deep intensity, wild conviction, greasy organ, sweet tremolo-soaked guitar, and heartbreaking harmonies....

JazzWorks Sunday Jam
Carleton Tavern, 223 Armstrong Street
First Sunday of the month, 2-5 pm; cover $5; free admission for students
First Sunday of the month, 2-5 pm; cover $5; free admission for students
JazzWorks has started a
second monthly jam series. Besides the current evening jam on the third
Thursday of each month, it also runs an afternoon jam on the first Sunday of
the month. Charley Gordon writes: "One of the hopes is that this afternoon
jam session will be attractive to students who, for some reason, generally
avoid taverns on weekday nights. Depending on attendance and other factors, we
might do some experimenting with format in this new jam."
Host Band: The
Kavchak/Kubelka/Menard Trio
Michael Kavchak - bass
Anthony Kubelka - piano
Daniel Menard - drums
These students all are
members of the Ottawa Junior Jazz Band, and of the Bells Corners Academy Jazz
Camp Band where they work with Yves Laroche.
Whether you're a jazz lover,
or jazz instrumentalist or vocalist at any level, you are most welcome to join
the fun with the improvised blend of the familiar and unexpected. Musicians
of intermediate level and up are encouraged to participate in the jam. If
you will be calling a tune, you must bring at least three copies of lead sheets
in your concert C key for other musicians, and charts for Bb and Eb instruments
would be appreciated by horn players.
The jam sessions are
coordinated by Alf Warnock at: alf.warnock@gmail.com .
Please contact Alf if you would like to volunteer as MC or assist with
breakdown/setup for specific upcoming jam sessions in the 2013-2014 season, or
if you would like more information about the jam.

Swamp Band, the Split, Matt Andersen & the Mellotones, JJ Grey & Mofro,
Vintage Trouble, Selwyn Birchwood, David Maxwell & friends, John Mayall,
Firebelly, Long Tall Deb, Thornetta Davis, John Németh & the Bo-Keys, the
Texas Horns, Wicked Grin, Sugar Ray & the Bluetones, Darrell Nulisch, Paul
Oscher, Little Fredie King, Elvin Bishop & more.
Some suggestions –
July 3-6 (Ottawa locals in italics)
Thursday, July 3
Beth Hart – “When she sings, clocks
stop, hearts dance, and neck-hair tingles, it’s that compelling.” This
powerhouse vocalist and piano player is better known since her collaboration
with Joe Bonamassa. http://bethhart.com/
Gary Clark Jr – This
incredibly-talented singer/songwriter/guitarist/actor has been described as ‘the future of Texas blues’. http://www.garyclarkjr.com/
Friday, July 4
Cold Capital –“Taking their cue from
classic blues and rock traditions, Cold Capital's guitar driven music mixes roots, soul and
country into a boilerpot of rock ‘n' roll that'll keep you shakin' your money
maker.” https://www.facebook.com/ColdCapital/info
Honey Island Swamp
Band – “Their
music has been described as “Bayou Americana”
with timeless songs from Wilkinson & Mulé, highlighted by Mulé’s searing
guitar, Wilkinson’s sure-handed mandolin, and 4-part vocal harmonies, all
anchored by the powerful groove of Price & Paul’s Louisiana stomp rhythm
section. The addition of Trevor Brooks on Hammond B-3 organ to the family in 2010 has rounded out the
band’s sound, which draws from a variety of influences in the world of roots
music.” http://www.honeyislandswampband.com/
The Claudettes – piano-drums
duo of Johnny Iguana and Michael Caskey http://theclaudettes.bandcamp.com/
Saturday, July 5
The Split –“The seven-piece band, homegrown in Canada’s capital,
plays original vivacious dance tunes that are as much melancholic reflections
on life and love. Lead singer Matt Chaffey’s smoky timbre elicits memories of
Chess Records’ golden era, while poignantly expressing thoughts of loss,
stress, heartbreak, and starting over.”
Matt Andersen &
the Mellotones – “Matt’s narrative-driven writing cuts
through the soul, blending blues and folk, encompassed in total honesty. He
takes listeners on a ride with his diverse musical styles, skilled guitar work
and over-the-top showmanship. Touring with his full band, including a four-piece horn section.”
Black Joe Lewis – Commenting about the 2013 release, “Electric
Slave”, Joe said: “Electric Slave” is what people are today with their faces
buried in their iPhones and the only way to hold a conversation is through
text. The next step is to plug it in to your damned head. Nothing is up front
anymore and people are de-socializing.”
JJ Grey & Mofro
– “JJ
Grey’s grimy blend of front-porch soul and downhome storytelling has taken him
around the world and back again.” http://www.jjgrey.com/
Vintage Trouble – “ … Ty
Taylor, Nalle Colt, Richard Danielson and Rick Barrio Dill together form a
quartet of sincere musicians whose combination of hard work, talent and luck
are undoubtedly going to take them right where they deserve to be: on our radios,
in our cars, our headphones, our televisions, at the venues where we go to see
our favourite bands and on the soundtrack of our favourite moments in life.” http://www.vintagetrouble.com/
Sunday, July 6
Joe Louis Walker – “… is
known worldwide as one of the genre’s top musical trailblazers – a mesmerizing
guitarist and soul-testifying vocalist. On his dynamic new CD [“Hornet’s
Nest”], Walker’s music is equal parts rock ‘n’ roll fire and blistering
passionate blues.” http://www.joelouiswalker.com/
T.J. Wheeler – TJ Wheeler is an original, but his music is steeped in
musical styles that go back hundreds of years. He transports audiences of all
ages to times and places where their imaginations can vividly and vicariously
experience the rich history and soul connections of blues & jazz power.
