week, CKCU offers great music, news, community events, concert listings and

CKCU is one of
the most vital cultural institutions in Ottawa and we want to continue to bring
you compelling radio for another year. Your contribution helps that to happen
and the funding drive provides thirty percent of CKCU’s annual budget.
In 2012 CKCU’s
general maintenance and service costs were $165,000. In order to provide your

Our volunteers
receive no money for putting on their shows and they are asked to help raise
money for the station during its annual funding drive. This year our target is

The Toronto Blues Society will be celebrating the 17th annual
Maple Blues Awards by honouring nationally and internationally recognized
Canadian blues artists from across the country on January 20, 2014. The
nominees are recognized both for their talent as well as their contribution to
the growing Canadian blues music scene.
Ottawa, Ontario trio MonkeyJunk
lead the way with nominations in six categories, Toronto’s The 24th Street Wailers and
Yukon-based bluesman Brandon Isaak
each with three. Quebec blues
artists are well represented with nominations for Nanette Workman, Ben Racine, Dawn Tyler Watson, Paul Deslaurier
and Guy Bélanger to name a few.
British Columbia’s thriving blues scene is represented with nominations for The Harpoonist & The Axe Murderer,

Jack de Keyzer is a 2 X Juno
(Canada's Grammy) and 7X
Maple Blues award winning artist, blues guitarist, singer,
song writer and producer and one of the finest blues guitarists on the
scene today. The British born, Canadian resident’s career has
spanned over three decades. De Keyzer has released 7 CDs and 1 DVD as a
leader and appeared as a session guitarist on hundreds of recordings. As a
session guitarist he has appeared with many artists including Etta James, Otis Rush, John
Hammond Jr., Ronnie Hawkins, Duke Robillard, Robert Gordon, Willy Big Eyes
Smith, Bo Diddley & Blue Rodeo. Jack de Keyzer’s songs have also appeared in video; rock &
blues radio charts; other artists CDs (Prairie
Oyster's Platinum CD Everyone Knows); TV soundtracks and in
Motion Pictures.
In 2010 and 2003 de Keyzer was awarded
Canada's highest musical honour the Juno award
for Blues Album of the Year,
for "The Corktown Sessions" (2010) and "6 String
Lover" (2003). In addition to the Juno, de
Keyzer has won 7 Maple Blues Awards and in 2007 won the International Songwriting
Competition's first place for the song
"That's the Only Time". Jack's most recent accolades came
from two very Canadian institutions. First, Prime Minister Stephen Harper's son Ben
received a guitar lesson from Jack at the request of Canada's first lady Laureen Harper at the Prime
Minister's residence in January of 2009. Jack was also awarded Great Canadian Blues Artist
of the year from a poll of CBC radio listeners in 2009.
Jack de Keyzer's latest CD “Electric Love” was nominated for
the 2013 Juno Blues Recording of
the Year. Performing across Canada and internationally over
180 shows per year, Jack de Keyzer is a masterful, electric blues guitarist,
soulful singer and song writer of the first order.

ZZ Top lay undisputed claim to being the longest running major rock band
with original personnel intact and in 2004 the Texas trio was inducted into the
Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. With the release of each of their albums the band
has explored new ground in terms of both their sonic approach and the material
they’ve recorded. Evidence of that consistency and adaptability is found in “La
Futura”, their first studio album in nine years, which was released in
September of 2012. Produced by Rick Rubin and Gibbons, it reflects the solid
blues inspiration that has powered the band since the very beginning with a contemporary
approach that underscores the group’s inclination to experiment and explore new
sonic vistas. The album includes ten new tracks including the widely lauded ‘I
Gotsta Get Paid’ that has become both a video and in-concert sensation.

To listen to Johnny Max tell it, and to watch
Johnny Max present it, you understand very quickly that there’s more to creating
great music than simply performing a first-rate piece of music well. It’s much
more all-encompassing than that.
Max’s take includes engaging the audience,
making his show accessible. He wants to more than simply feed off the audience,
he looks to make them part of the experience. And he does so with his good
natured wit.
Using humour to get your point across is
always risky because there’s a fine line between entertaining and being the
comic. To his credit Johnny Max knows how to tread that line because the music
always comes first.
Max’s music doesn’t always follow
conventional Blues lines. Rather than be confined to the traditional 12 bar
influenced forms, this veteran of the musical wars favours substance rather
than convention.
While his first three releases firmly
established Max in the Blues idiom, it was on his fourth, the Juno nominated “A
Lesson I’ve Learned”, that Johnny added to his Blues sensibilities and found
his groove. And that groove had more to do with Southern Soul than straight up
Blues. Of note, check the title track whose chorus might have been lifted from
the Dan Penn songbook.
Max’s latest disc, “It’s A Long Road”, picks
up where “Lesson” left off – with a wallop! Partnering with a brand new band,
Johnny lays down a dozen tracks with a heavy dosage of Gumbo R&B, nods to
Rock’em Sock’em Soul, and hints of all-out Boogie work-outs and Tom Waits
styled tonalities. Along the way, Johnny relates his most deeply personal
stories to date.
You would think that all of the above
would be enough to keep anyone busy but Max also finds time to host a radio
show: “Sunday Morning Soul” on The HAZE FM, www.thehazefm.ca, Canada’s only commercial web radio
station Sunday mornings at 11AM and Wednesdays at 10PM; and to co-program the
CNE Bandshell BluesFest (with Rico Ferrara), among other ventures.
It’s all in days work for Max. And he and his
fans wouldn’t have it any other way.

The long awaited return of the legendary
Bonnie Raitt to the stage of the National Arts Centre with a very special
guest: Marc Cohn. Well into her International Tour for her Grammy Award Winning
19th album “Slipstream”, this will be Bonnie’s first Ottawa
appearance in over 6 years. The album got its start by Bonnie’s initial
collaborations with longtime admirer, producer Joe Henry. Though many
songs were actually recorded at that time, 4 have been included on
“Slipstream”, with the remainder to be released on later recordings. The
balance of the album comes from subsequent sessions with her much-lauded
touring band including George Marinelli (guitar), James ‘Hutch’ Hutchinson

Sue Foley is considered to be one of
the finest blues and roots artists working today. Born to a working class
family, Sue spent her early childhood moving from Canadian town to town with
her mother. At sixteen, she embarked on her professional career. By twenty-one,
she was living in Austin TX and recording for the legendary blues label,
Antone’s Records. Her first release, “Young Girl Blues”, quickly established
her unique talents as a blues guitarist and songwriter. Throughout the ‘90s she
took to the road with her paisley Telecaster and honed her craft, working and
sharing the stage with such artists as BB King, Buddy Guy, Lucinda Williams and
Tom Petty. After moving back to Canada, Sue won the prestigious Juno Award for
her critically acclaimed CD “Love Coming Down” as well as seventeen Maple Blues
Awards.
Gifted singer-songwriter, guitarist, pianist and American troubadour,
Peter Karp, is a master
songsmith with an art for spinning true-to-life emotions, humor, and candor.
With an upbringing that was equal parts southern Alabama and the swamps of New
Jersey, Karp’s music is fueled by the Yankee-Rebel connection. He first caught
national attention with help from Rolling Stone guitarist Mick Taylor who
recorded and toured with Karp on his first label release “The Turning Point”.
Karp further established himself on the national scene as a critically
acclaimed songwriter, and accomplished guitarist and pianist with the release

The artwork for “Can You Hear The Music” was inspired by the infamous neon
sign above ‘Sam The Record Man’, the landmark Toronto- based record store on
Yonge Street, and the fact that, over the years, owner Sam Sniderman provided a gazillion music lovers with all their
wants and needs. “When I went to Sam's store
and asked him if he would carry our first record, his immediate reply was
‘Absolutely and we will put it in the front window’, I’ll never forget what he
did, and that his support for Downchild and all our future releases never
faltered," says Donnie Walsh.
Downchild celebrated their 40th anniversary in style in 2009
with a national tour and a SOLD OUT headline performance at Massey Hall in Toronto
that was filmed as part of a documentary on the band entitled “Flip Flop &
Fly – 40 Years Of The Downchild Blues Band”. The documentary was narrated by
and featured Dan Aykroyd and was
broadcast constantly over a two year period on TMN and HBO Canada as one of
their most popular shows ever. The documentary and concert have both been
released on DVD to great response around the world from the band’s loyal fans.
A constant throughout, Donnie ‘Mr. Downchild’ Walsh, the leader and
founding member of the band, has kept the music live and alive in the world of
blues today. Downchild band members include some of the most well respected
musicians in the country, who have performed together for over 15 years.
This includes silky smooth singer and harmonica player Chuck Jackson, tenor sax
player Pat Carey, Mike Fitzpatrick on drums, rhythm captain Gary Kendall on
bass, and former American super-group rocker Michael Fonfara (of Rhinoceros

Somewhere between the rhymthic yodeling of “The Singing Brakeman”,
Jimmie Rodgers and the flavourful grooves of ragtime guitarist/singer, Blind
Blake lies the roots of Jim Henman’s musical beginnings. Writing his first
tune, at age 12, Jim spent much of his youth strumming a Stella acoustic guitar
on the sandy shores of Clam Harbour, Nova Scotia. By the mid-‘60s, Jim, with
high school friends Myles Goodwyn, Greg Stephen, Dave Dodsworth & Doug
Grace started the top 40 band, “Woodies Termites”. Jim and Myles went on to
co-found the Canadian rock band, April Wine, in the fall of 1969 with Jim’s
cousins, David and Ritchie Henman. Jim,
David and Ritchie, along with George Mack , had formed the band
Prism from late 1968 until summer 1969. April Wine moved to Montréal in
1970, signing with Aquarius Records.
Shortly after the
release of their debut album in 1971, Jim decided to leave the band, moving
back to the East Coast to start a family and pursue a career in Medical
Technology. While his career as a professional musician may have been put on
hiatus, Jim remained connected to the musical community in Halifax, continuing
to write music and performing locally. Jim officially re-emerged
onto the East Coast music scene in the ‘90s.

As one of Canada's hardest working and most
prolific blues guitar virtuosos, David Gogo has amassed a worldwide fanbase and
an impressive list of accomplishments. He has earned four JUNO nominations, the
2012 Western Canadian Music Award for Blues Recording of the Year, the CBC
Saturday Night Blues' Great Canadian Blues Award for a lifetime contribution to
the blues in Canada, and has twice been named Maple Blues Guitarist of the
Year. In March 2013, he performed as the supporting act for blues legend B.B. King for the third time in his
career, this time at the Port Theatre in Gogo's hometown of Nanaimo, BC.
Before writing and recording his latest
album, “Come
On Down”, Gogo took a pilgrimage along the Blues Trail starting in
Memphis and traveling through Mississippi, Arkansas and Alabama. Highlights of
his southern adventure included sitting in with local musicians at The Shack Up
Inn, Ground Zero, and Red's in Clarksdale, Mississippi. He appeared as a guest
on Sonny Payne's renowned ‘King
Biscuit Radio Hour’, and toured the legendary Fame, Sun, Stax, and
Willie Mitchell's Royal Studios. Gogo also traveled to towns mentioned in
Robert Johnson songs, poured bourbon on Johnson's grave, and even went down to
Rosedale with his rider by his side, as those famous ‘Crossroads’ lyrics proclaim.
Inspired by his journey through the
birthplace of the blues, Gogo wrote six original tunes and combined them with
six reinvented yet classic covers to create a new album that not only honours
traditional blues but also gets you dancing with some good old gritty rock and
roll. “Come
On Down” takes you to a place where Robert Johnson meets the Rolling
Stones and Fleetwood Mac meets Ray Charles. It's a wild ride that Gogo
navigates with ease, ingenuity and style.

and interviews with “new and reissued blues and rhythm and blues tracks on wax”,
alternating with “live blues and R&B for a Sunday night” in the last half
hour of the show. On the last Sunday of every month, the show goes “down in the
delta” for a selection of acoustic blues tracks in the final half hour of the
program.
