Charles Bradley: Soul
of America
Monday, September 2 @
8:40 pm
Tuesday, September 3
@ 9:10 pm
It’s
a man’s world, the song says, but it’s not every man’s world, and certainly not
Charles Bradley’s.
The
first scene in the gritty feel-good documentary Charles Bradley: Soul Of
America finds the veteran soul singer fixing up his hair to epic James
Brown proportion. Bradley, billed as ‘Black Velvet,’ had been imitating Brown
for more than 40 years. But as the film opens, the mimicking is coming to an
end. ‘Now,’ he says, ‘I’m gonna do Charles Bradley.’ Which he does, to
star-turning effect.
In
Poull Brien’s feature-length directorial debut, Bradley recalls key incidents
and heartaches (as do family members, whose stories sometimes conflict).
Bradley was abandoned by his mother and later became a vagabond uneducated
teen. He lost his first band to the Vietnam War and his brother to a thug.
Eventually
adopted by a hipster Brooklyn music label [Daptone Records], the all-heart
retro-soul singer makes his first record at age 62 [in 2011; a second
recording was released this year]. ‘Why is it so hard,’ he sings, not just about
his own plight.’ It’s a question from the gut and from the heart, which are the
same places the film aims for, and hits so well.
(Brad
Wheeler, Globe and Mail)
“Daptone musician and
producer Tim Brennek … recounts how Bradley took his song “Why Is It So Hard?’
and transformed it from a whimsical complaint about the difficulty of breaking
through musically in America, to something far more profound.” Reviewer T’cha
Dunleavy continues, “That’s what true artists do. In similar fashion, Bradley
elevates this rather straightforward documentary into a touching tale of
struggle, perseverance and vindication.”

David Vest and East Meets Vest
Neat Coffee Shop, Burnstown ON
Friday, September 6; tickets $27.50
The January 25 visit from David Vest, Mike
Fitzpatrick, Gary Kendall and Teddy Leonard is still being talked about.
The stories and playing were something that couldn't have been expected!
Although he now calls Canada home,
Maple Blues Award winner David Vest is an authentic, Southern-bred boogie-woogie
piano player and blues shouter. Born in Alabama in 1943, David grew up in
Birmingham, not far from Tuxedo Junction. He played his first paying gig in
1957, and by the time he opened for Roy Orbison on New Year’s Day 1962, he was
a seasoned veteran of Gulf Coast roadhouses and honky tonks.
From 2002 through 2006, he shared lead
vocals and frontman duties in the Paul deLay Band, culminating in his
performance on an award-winning live CD, which reached the Top Ten on
Billboard's national blues chart. During his years in Portland, David won five
Muddy Awards from the Cascade Blues Association, including Best Keyboard
Player. After deLay’s untimely death, Vest joined forces with Kenny ‘Blues Boss’
Wayne and various other pianists, including Ann Rabson, to form the supergroup
Northwest Pianorama.
In 2012 he recorded and released East
Meets Vest, backed by members of Downchild and Fathead. Holger Petersen of CBC
Saturday Night Blues called it "one of the best Canadian blues albums of
2012."

Bharath & His Rhythm Four
Rainbow, 76 Murray Street
Saturday, September 14 @ 10 pm
Faithful disciples of Muddy
Waters, Little Walter and other Chicago bluesmen of that time, this band
manages to keep the tradition alive without resorting to mere mimicry. Winner
of the Toronto Blues Society 2007 Talent Search, Bharath Rajakumar with
his harmonica, his Rhythm Four and his style, inspired by the ‘50s Chicago and
Arkansas Blues history, is a band solidly rooted in traditional
Blues. It’s all there: the sound, the voice and the musical
instruments. Alternately menacing and celebratory, brooding and boastful,
Bharath & His Rhythm Four band gaze in the past not with nostalgia but with
stunning passion. A perfect refinement, the distillation of their
forefathers, Bharath & His Rhythm Four with their unfailing energy never fail
to make an impression.

The Claytones
Neat Coffee House,
Saturday, September 14; $15
Born in the heart of the Ottawa
Valley, The Claytones masterfully spin their melodic, vocal driven, Canadiana
brand of roots music with old school sensibilities. A true collaborative
project, Kelly Prescott, Anders Drerup, Adam Puddington and newcomer Pat
McLaughlin write and arrange their songs together, effectively making The
Claytones sound the sum of its parts. Combining their ranging influences,
they have created a unique blend of original and interpreted songs performed
with tight, three-part harmonies and a warm stage presence.
With an impressive list of individual
accolades this young band released their debut album in July 2012 “Lake in the
Night.” They have released over 8 full-length recordings of original music
under the names of Kelly Prescott, Prescott, Anders Drerup and Adam Puddington.
The National Post listed them as one of the top 5 Canadian Acts to watch in
2012. They are the recipient of the Ottawa Folk Festival’s 2013 Galaxie Rising
Star Award.

SHOW Concert Series presents an intimate, up close and personal Blues Revue

All tickets includes Hors d’oeuvres
& Assorted Appetizers ● Reserved Seating ● Large Dance Floor ● Barrier-Free
Accessibility ● Free Parking
For the 5th Season launch,
an Intimate & Interactive Blues Revue with performances by Al Lerman
(solo), Jake Chisholm (trio) and the Gary Kendall Band.
Al Lerman (Solo)
Multi-instrumentalist Al
Lerman (harmonica, tenor saxophone, guitar and vocals) is the band leader
of the 2x Juno Award winning blues/roots outfit FATHEAD. He also
performs regularly as a solo acoustic artist playing guitar & rack
harmonica, and often works as a guest sideman with a myriad of top-notch bands,
touring internationally.
Jake Chisholm (Trio)
There is sincerity in Jake Chisholm’s
music that is immediately identifiable. Whether his compelling vocal, his
memorable guitar hooks, or his thoughtful lyrics ; he excels in all areas,
providing the listener with the feelings of both familiarity and being privy to
something cutting edge ; both at once. No fancy bells and whistles here, just a
deep and full sound that is a fresh take on blues and adding rock ‘n’ roll
elements. Inspired by classic blues, soul and rock n roll, Chisholm’s tasteful
yet intricate guitar work and song writing evokes vivid and shameless tales of
love, lust, and lessons learned.
Gary Kendall Band
Everyone knows Gary Kendall as
oft-elected Maple Blues’ Bassist of the Year, blues man about town and keeper
of the bottom end for Downchild. But Gary’s alter ego is found in his much
beloved Gary Kendall Band – a band in which each carefully selected player
is equal and accountable. Formed in 2005, Gary reached out to some of Toronto’s
best musicians to create a turn-on-a-dime squad of blues marauders to build a
loyal following for their own brand of music –and for doing exactly what they
like to on any given night – play the blues. The chemistry found between
Gary Kendall (bass/lead vocals/songwriter), Tyler Burgess (drums), Darran Poole
(guitar/vocals) and Wayne “Shakey” Dagenais (piano/organ/percussion/vocals) is
beyond formidable. This spirited foursome plays together relentlessly and has
so much fun at it, one’s never entirely sure what to expect – and that
live spontaneity is exactly what the blues has needed for a long time.

concert 1: Slide
Guitar Summit, recorded in CBC Vancouver's
Studio One
The CBC Slide Guitar Summit brought together some of North America's
finest blues slide guitar players including Sonny Landreth, Colin Linden and
Steve Dawson. The slide guitar is a special sound that is not only historically
relevant, but also widely used in pop and rock music by artists ranging from
Joe Walsh to Jack White, to Jimmy Page and Ben Harper. There are many ways to
play the slide guitar and we will hear three people with different but very
complementary approaches. Hailing from Lafayette LA, Nashville TN, and
Vancouver BC, these artists each brought a different sonic perspective to a
show recorded in front of a live audience as part of the 2013 CBC Toque
Sessions in Vancouver. The songs, mostly originals with a couple of choice
covers, included the 1959 chart topper, "Sleep Walk" by Santo and
Johnny.
