Papadon Washington Trio
Rainbow, 76 Murray Street
Tuesday, June 25 @ 9 pm

Every few years, a new champion steps out of nowhere to help carry the blues traditions further into the future. Don Washington arrived right on time with the right tools for the job. Armed with powerful hands and a deep, muscular voice, Papadon is ready to shout the blues like a country preacher.

I was introduced to Don at the Chicago Blues Festival several years ago by my friend Bruce Iglauer (Alligator Records) who said: “Don Washington is an exciting young pianist and singer championing the blues piano tradition with flair, talent and soul. He can pound out a rocking boogie-woogie and get down into an intense slow blues, plus his original songs show plenty of writing talent (and a sense of humor). He’s got a strong voice and a warm and comfortable stage personality that can reach audiences easily. His performance at the 2005 Chicago Blues Festival won him a legion of new fans, and left the crowd hollering for more. I can heartily recommend him for any club or blues festival.”

And here’s what Jim O’Neal, co-founder of Living Blues said about that Chicago performance: “One of the most pleasant surprises I had at the 2005 Chicago Blues Festival was meeting and hearing Papadon Washington. It’s great to hear someone not only carrying on the blues piano tradition in such fine fashion, but knowing how to entertain an audience with it too.”

The Honeyrunners
Rainbow, 76 Murray Street
Thursday, June 27 @ 9:30 pm
opening @ 8:30 pmMubarak Farah & The Airliner Blues Band (www.facebook.com/airlinerbluesband)

The Honeyrunners have a knack for musical alchemy, melding soul-wrenching Motown Rock with the shine of ‘90s Alt-radio and the storytelling folk of the ‘60s. Their debut single, ‘Jet Set’, is featured on Bacardi's international campaign for 'Champions Party 2013'. The newest HR tune, ‘My Garage (Bang Bang Bang)’, will debut on Coca-Cola's "52 Songs of Happiness" campaign later this year. In April, The Honeyrunners performed live on national television for CTV Canada AM (watch here), followed by a slew of TV performances, radio interviews, and glowing show reviews. With 85+ Canadian tour & festival dates on the books, a debut EP (May 2013) released under Fontana North, and a live album/DVD in the works (Fall 2013 - teaser - "Hold Me"), this young Toronto band is busier than your average DIY indie outfit. The power is in the music - massive drums, funky bass, soulful rhythm keys, heavy electric guitar, a gritty voice, lush harmonies, gang-vocals, and a collective 80-odd years of obsession with music's colourful history. It amounts to a brotherhood brought together by creative ambition, itching to push modern pop music back into the land of the edgy, the soulful, the intellectual - and having a damn good time doing so.

His 2012 live CD is still receiving attention and he’s already writing for the next CD.

Weber Brothers
            with special guests Firebelly
Black Sheep Inn, Wakefield QC
Saturday, June 29 @ 8:30 pm; $10

There are bands for which rock and roll is a lifestyle, and then there are bands for which it is life. At an age when most boys are still dreaming of rock stardom, the Weber Brothers were too busy working to care. Four sets a night, four nights a week, the brothers perfected their hard-won sound in Maryland dive bars they were often too young to frequent.

Inspired by their intense love of Scorcese’s classic concert film “The Last Waltz,” Ryan and Sam sent off a self-recorded demo tape to the legendary Ronnie Hawkins, the elder statesman of rock whose former protégés (Robbie Robertson, Rick Danko, et al.) went on to reshape the music history as The Band. Duly impressed by the pair's immense raw talent, Hawkins promptly invited them to audition for his storied backing band, The Hawks. One quick decision and one long van ride later, they arrived at Hawkins’ rural Ontario home, and after surviving the intense musical apprenticeship of his fabled “Rock ‘n’ Roll Bootcamp,” they were in: full-blooded Hawks.

Ten years and six self-released albums later, the Webers have spread their wings, shared the stage with icons like Garth Hudson, Levon Helm, Leon Russell, Derek Trucks and Kris Kristofferson, and toured extensively throughout the US, Canada, and Europe.

“Left Right Left Right,” their seventh release, is nothing less than a rebirth of The Weber Brothers sound. A double album of 26 original songs, it fuses the stomping country rock learned at Hawkins’ knee with the brothers' own love of pop music in all its splendor, from gorgeous “Pet Sounds”/ “White Album” vocal harmonies to blacktop-burning 50’s rockabilly, full-throated Crazy Horse anthems to classic corner group doo-wop. Tightly focused in execution yet epic in scope, “Left Right Left Right” is the Weber Brothers at their finest.

Firebelly is a modern Canadian blues outfit, formed in 2012, driven by a collective passion to create fresh blues music, while respecting its rich & timeless traditions. Lead singer & harp player, front man Mathieu Gagnon, is a captivating storyteller, with the rare ability to make you live through the song, with his sweet powerful voice, & electrifying harp playing. The smooth & funky bass guitar of Dan Grewal, combine with the lively drums of Mike McNeil and the poignant & fearlessly tasteful guitar playing of Fredy Carrière, to create a stripped down Blues sound that is “just right” In a less than a year, they have already garnered major festival, television & national commercial radio airplay. Firebelly represented the Ottawa Blues Society at the 2013 International Blues Challenge in Memphis, Tennessee in January.

 “At Last”
Georgette Fry Sings Etta James
Peterborough Market Hall, 140 Charlotte Street, Peterborough ON
Saturday, June 29 @ 8 pm; tickets $33

Juno nominated Georgette Fry is an accomplished singer/songwriter from Kingston, Ontario. A veteran of the concert and festival circuit, she receives rave reviews for her live performances. Georgette has been described as a “powerful and expressive singer.” She returns to the stage with a Tribute to Etta James, accompanied by an eight-piece band, three accomplished vocalists (Tabby Johnson, Mariko Ohtake and Anna Sudac), and the Shout Sister! Choir providing the gospel backups!

Georgette’s concerts highlight the ease with which she bridges the gap between jazz and blues.  Long recognized as one Canada’s best blues vocalists, Georgette was most recently named “2013 Singer of the Year” by the Calgary Blues Music Association.

Etta James' career spanned six decades, during which she had several top ten hits, a dozen nominations and three Grammy Awards and a Grammy "Lifetime Achievement" Award; in 2008, her first hit, "The Wallflower" (aka "Dance With Me Henry") was also given the Grammy Hall of Fame Award. Etta James passed away in January of 2012, leaving one helluva legacy.

Tim Bastmeyer & Jerome Tucker
Rainbow, 76 Murray Street
Saturday, July 6

Blues Guitarist Tim Bastmeyer teams up with seasoned bassist Jerome Tucker for a new CD and show that is sure to get you up and moving on the dance floor. Set for release in Summer 2013, the new CD will feature the duo of Tim Bastmeyer on guitar and vocals and Jerome Tucker on bass and vocals, along with Corey Richardson on the drums, Scott Daniels on keys, and guest appearances from Jerome Godboo on harmonica, and Richard Thornton (Jack De Keyzer Band) on sax.   reverbnation.com/jerometuckertimbastmeyer

Jerome Tucker grew up in Philadelphia and started playing the electric bass at age 10. By the age of 16 he was performing in clubs in the Philly area. During his time in the US Navy he had the opportunity to perform with Aaron and Ivan Neville throughout Alabama, New Orleans and the Southern USA. Tucker moved to Chicago in 1996, sharing the stage with artists such as Chico Banks, Lurrie Bell, John Primer, Lonnie Brooks, Son Seals, Koko Taylor, Larry McCray, Buddy Guy and more. Prior to relocating to Canada, Tucker toured extensively throughout USA and Europe when he joined the Larry McCray Band.

Tim Bastmeyer is a Canadian blues singer/songwriter. He has performed throughout North America, as well as the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Scotland and England. Bastmeyer’s most recent self-titled recording was released in late 2011 (produced and engineered by Bastmeyer) and received significant airplay and reviews, reaching #34 on The Roots Report. Featuring Juno award winning blues artist Julian Fauth on piano, James Thomson on bass and Corey Richardson on drums, this release is much different than Bastmeyer’s 2010 solo acoustic blues recording, titled “Graveyard:. There are 11 tracks on the CD, featuring 10 originals and a cover of the blues classic ‘I’m Going Down’. When not on tour Bastmeyer can be found at his recording studio in the Toronto area.   www.timbastmeyer.com

Paul Reddick
Irene’s Pub, 885 Bank Street
Saturday, July 6

Paul Reddick may well be Wishbone. His music is rooted in the blues, but his new record is a portrait of a wandering musician, a lover with precious little time for sentiment. It owes its existence to the musicians he has heard for 20 years, and all the musicians he has played with over two decades and half a dozen albums. And his new CD — yes, it’s titled “Wishbone” — is, he insists, a soundtrack for dancing and sex. Self-portrait? Maybe — but it IS the most consistent, powerful statement he’s made.

Reddick has long been a part of Canada’s rich roots music scene; he is one of the best harmonica players in the country, and … his distinctive voice covers a wide emotional palette; always engaging; sometimes a shout, more often a conversationally vivid whisper. But it is Reddick’s songs — sometimes sweet, sometimes bitter, always thought-provoking and rarely sentimental — and the passionate way he delivers them that best illustrate what the influential British magazine Mojo described as his “wayward brilliance.”

In the real world, he has been nominated for Junos and Blues Music Awards and he is a seven-time Maple Blues Award winner. And he continues to tour — across Canada and the United States, with two or three trips a year to Europe — with his hard-hitting band.

Singer, songwriter, blues guitarist and harmonica player extraordinaire … lots of great performance clips on YOUTUBE.

CBC RADIO CONCERTS ON DEMAND
****************************************
Canada Live - Radio Two @ 7pm, Monday to Thursday; Friday – Radio One

Tuesday, June 25
concert 1: Christine Tassan et les Imposteures, recorded at the Broadway Theatre in Saskatoon
The story of Christine Tassan & les Imposteures is fascinating. Christine emigrated from her native France to Montreal in 1994, bringing her love of the great French standards (Brel, Piaf, etc.) and jazz manouche. She eventually teamed up with traditional and classical violinist extraordinaire Martine Gaumond [go-MOND], jazz guitarist Lise-Anne Ross and bassist Blanche Baillargeon [bye-are-ZHON]. The name "Imposteures" is a not-so-subtle jab at the long-standing tradition of gypsy jazz as a male-only domain. Brushing aside this taboo, these four talented women were so smitten by this infectious acoustic jazz music they dove into the genre head-first and formed Canada's only female gypsy jazz ensemble. They arrange and play gypsy jazz classics in their own unique way but they also have a beautiful repertoire of French vocal standards that they perform marvelously, often in four-part harmony. Their stage act is full of spirit, humour and camaraderie.

concert 2: Julie Lamontagne with Elyzabeth Diaga, recorded at L'Astral in Montreal
Tiempos Locos reunites the Spanish-Quebecois vocal colourings of Elyzabeth Diaga with Montreal jazz pianist Julie Lamontagne. Bound by their sensitivity and musical intuition, this new collaboration presents music that is both touching and surprising, all in Spanish. Accompanied by violin, bass and percussion, Diaga and Lamontagne offer us an intimate concert that is both sensual and full of life where the respective styles of each meet in a new musical universe of rhythmic and harmonic wealth. Passion, sensitivity, passion and tenderness are what Tiempos Locos is all about.

Wednesday, June 26
concert 1: Great Big Sea, recorded at the Danforth Music Hall in Toronto
A Great Big Sea concert is always a rollicking good time, with the audience dancing and singing along. Last year, Newfoundland's most popular band celebrated their 20th anniversary with an intimate concert at Toronto's Danforth Music Hall in November. CBC's Canada Live was on hand to record the party and now you can enjoy all of the fun!

Thursday, June 27
concert 1: Metric, recorded in Studio Q at CBC Toronto
Multiple-Juno-winning band Metric has led the charge on Canada's indie-rock scene for the past decade. The band performed three songs from their latest album, Synthetica, in Studio Q.

concert 2: Serena Ryder, recorded at the Mod Club in Toronto
On November 20, one week before the release of her brand new album Harmony, singer-songwriter Serena Ryder performed a sold-out show at the Mod Club in Toronto. The special, intimate concert saw Serena premiering her new songs for an adoring crowd of fans.

Canada Live podcast, released on Thursdays
Thursday, June 27 on the Canada Live podcast
Amanda Martinez, recorded at Koerner Hall, Toronto
Amanda Martinez's appearance at Koerner Hall was a long time in the making. The date was originally booked for spring of 2012 but she had to postpone it until the winter after receiving news she was carrying twins to be delivered days from the show. Eight months after her little girl and boy were born she came back to the stage on December 1st. By the time December arrived, Amanda was well on her way to completing her newest recording Mañana. This concert is a preview to that album which will be released later this year. Amanda was joined on stage by her all-star band and Mañana’s producer, the famed Grammy winning producer and guitarist Javier Limon.

concert 1: Great Big Sea, recorded at the Danforth Music Hall in Toronto
A Great Big Sea concert is always a rollicking good time, with the audience dancing and singing along. Last year, Newfoundland's most popular band celebrated their 20th anniversary with an intimate concert at Toronto's Danforth Music Hall in November.
