Scarlett Jane
Luneta’s Bistro, 665 Bronson Avenue
Friday, May 31 @ 9 pm

Neat Coffee Shop, Burnstown ON
Saturday, June 1 @ 8 pm

Scarlett Jane is one of the most exciting new collaborations in recent Canadian music - the marriage of the distinctive songs and beautifully haunting voices of Andrea Ramolo and Cindy Doire.

Both Andrea and Cindy are road warriors. Andrea was two records into a solo career when she joined forces to create Scarlett Jane. She’s the queen of taking music to places you may well have never heard of; she’s completed (and booked) four major national tours across Canada. She’s of Italian heritage, a sweet city woman with fire in her heart, embers in her voice, and a background that includes school teaching (yes, she has her qualifications), acting in films, and even tap dancing. Cindy calls herself a troubadour and a vagabond. She’s from Timmins, Northern Ontario, bilingual, and she’s as at home in a Paris bistro as she is hitchhiking in Cuba, busking in Spain or making her CDs in Nashville. Her voice can whisper or roar, as the song (and the lyrics) demand. She has three solo
albums, two in French, and she’s toured regularly in French Canada and Europe.

They met several years ago at a tiny Toronto music venue; their solo careers were starting to move forward, and they shared a passion for prose, poetry, theatrics and songs in minor keys. They liked blues and country, old school soul and rock ’n’ roll.

The blend of their voices stopped conversations; their musical sensibilities interweaved seemingly without effort. Soon, they began collaborating as songwriters, performing on each other’s shows and singing on each other’s solo albums.

And now, “Stranger”, their debut recording, captures their strength and their vulnerability, and a progressive roots sound which embodies the raw and candid demeanor of Lucinda Williams, the moody sensuality of Stevie Nicks and Nick Cave, and the tender playfulness of Dolly Parton.

The singers’ collaborative songwriting, sultry performance style, and full band arrangements open up windows for the duo on both the indie scene and in major markets, nationally and internationally.

Scarlett Jane: powerful and irrefutable, musically and dynamically. From the studio to the stage, this intriguing female duo is geared for great things.

Virée Blues Boréale presents
Carolyn Fe Blues Collective
Cafe Bar Bistro Le Troquet, 41 Laval Street (Old Hull sector), Gatineau QC
Wednesday, May 29 @ 8 pm

Born in the Philippines in a highly entrepreneurial family, which clearly influenced her career, Carolyn Fe immigrated to Canada during a time when cultural diversity was not really very popular! The only family of Asian origins in a majorly white French-speaking families sector, the strong-natured Carolyn quickly learned to take her place. A multi disciplinary artist in dance, theatre, television, movies and music, there again, the entrepreneurial fibre inherited from her parents soon resurfaced. An internationally renowned professional choreographer and contemporary dancer, although only in her 20s, she started her own dancing school. She then left the artistic domain aside slightly to open her own consulting office for human resources; but she was quick to return to her previous domain, this time in music and acting on TV and movies. Whether in French, English or Tagalog, the accuracy of her acting soon lead her to larger scale productions like “Funkytown”, “Les Boys” and  “Just for laugh / the gags”.

Musically speaking, her group, the Carolyn Fe Blues Collective performs according to the Blues culture and is respectful of the Blues classic models but enriches these with an eclectic selection of varied music styles, through roots from overseas together with some inventiveness, all delivered in an energetic way by a powerful voice in theatrical performances; a highly innovative and progressive formula, quite far from the ordinary band! Her compositions, loaded with emotion, with lyrics that evoke deep sensations from the begging for love, the hard-core-in-your-face of truth denied or the dreamy allure of pure seduction are delivered by a solid group of seasoned musicians composed of  Dan Legault on drums, Rami Cassab on guitar, Tim Alleyne on keyboards and Oisin Little on bass. Their first album, “100%”, recorded in 2009 as well as their second, “Original Sin” in 2011 were fast to climb the charts of many FM and web radio stations throughout the world and continue to be positively reviewed, while a third album is being prepared for a launch this fall (2013). Numerous awards and nominations confirm the success of their presentations.

Music By the Bay Live 4th Season Finale

Thursday, May 30 @ at 9 pm; $40

Johnny is a soulful singer whose respect and passion for all types of music is evident. He is also a brilliant entertainer who has audiences thoroughly enjoying each show. Johnny Max has built up a solid reputation as one of those guys who gives 110% and is one of the most action-packed and satisfying entertainers around.

To listen to Johnny Max tell it, and to watch Johnny Max present it, you understand very quickly that there’s more to creating great music than simply performing a first-rate piece of music well. It’s much more all-encompassing than that.  Max’s take includes engaging the audience, making his show accessible.  He wants to more than simply feed off the audience, he looks to make them part of the experience.  And he and his fans wouldn’t have it any other way.

Deanna Bogart
Showplace Performance Centre Lounge, Peterborough ON
Tuesday, June 4 @ 8 pm; Tickets $32 at box office or on line www.showplace.org

From Lynn Morris:
Deanna Bogart is an American Blues singer, pianist and saxophone player who has won three American Blues Awards for Horn Instrumentalist of the year in 2008, 2009 and 2010, but what stands out most for me is her keyboard skills for which she was nominated for the 2013 BMA in the Pinetop Perkins Piano category. Deanna played on the patio at the Peterborough Holiday Inn in 2009; it was a great night for the fans at the Gazebo patio. The next day, she was the headliner at the Beaches Jazzfest but the weather was so bad that they had to shut down the stage. Deanna was so disappointed, as were all the fans at Kew Gardens (Rico Ferrara said it was the only time in over 20 yrs that they had to shut things down).

Cooper Brothers
            CD Release “Southbound”
Ukranian Hall, 1000 Byron Avenue
Thursday, June 6; 8-11 pm; tickets $20

Canada’s premiere country-rock band from the seventies through to the mid ‘80s, the Cooper Brothers first gained international attention when they  signed a major recording contract with Capricorn Records (famous for several of the most popular southern-rock acts of the time including: The Allman Brothers, Marshall Tucker, Delbert McClinton and Elvin Bishop). The Cooper Brothers, Brian and Richard, released two albums under the Capricorn label, the self-titled, “Cooper Brothers” and “Pitfalls of the Ballroom”. Both albums sold extremely well and the singles ‘The Dream Never Dies’, ‘Rock and Roll Cowboys’, ‘Show Some Emotion’ and ‘I’ll Know Her When I See Her’ all charted on The Billboard Hot 100.

Among their many critical accolades, the Cooper Brothers were voted Best New Group in 1978, Best MOR Group in 1979 and Best Overall Group in 1980 by Canadian Contemporary Music Programmers. In 1980, ‘The Dream Never Dies’ also earned an A.S.C.A.P Award as one of the most performed songs on U.S radio.

At the height of their career, the band toured throughout North America, sharing the stage with such artists as: The Doobie Brothers, Black Oak Arkansas, Joe Cocker, Charlie Daniels, Atlanta Rhythm Section, McGuinn, Clark and Hillman, AC/DC  and Seals and Crofts. In addition, the band worked with some of the most prolific musicians of the day including Chuck Leavell – keyboardist for The Rolling Stones – who played on a popular Cooper Brothers’ track ‘Riding High’. After Capricorn Records folded, the brothers released two more albums before disbanding in the mid eighties.

In September 2009, the brothers went to Masterlink Studio in Nashville and in February 2010 a new Cooper Brothers album entitled “In From The Cold” was released, featuring 12 brand new songs. Their latest release, “Southbound” hit the airwaves in February and is now available. Produced by Colin Cripps from Blue Rodeo, the recording of “Southbound” began about a year ago at the Tragically Hip’s studio near Kingston (Nyles Spencer engineering). Additional recording was done in Ottawa at Audio Valley recording (Jason Fee engineering) and at Blue Rodeo’s studio in Toronto.

Zaphod Beeblebrox presents
The Legendary Southern Renegade Provocateur
Tav Falco
Zaphod Beeblebrox, 27 York Street
Thursday, June 20; Doors @ 8pm; advance tickets (limited time) $15
http://www.ticketweb.ca/snl/VenueListings.action?venueId=10807

From Paris, France via Memphis, Tennessee, Acclaimed and revered by his musical peers and critics alike, here is your chance to see the indie rock legend. Falco has said his main artistic purpose is "to stir up the dark waters of the unconscious."

Tav Falco - The master of a raw and shambolic fusion of rockabilly, blues, and fractured noise, Tav Falco was, along with the Cramps, one of the earliest purveyors of what would come to be known as psychobilly, and he anticipated the fractured but hard-hitting blues wailing of the Gories and the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion by close to a decade.

Falco put together the first version of his band the Panther Burns (named for a famous Tennessee plantation), a group whose revolving membership included Alex Chilton and James Luther Dickinson in its early incarnations. Falco then relocated to New York City, where he brought his frenetic roots music to the Big Apple's then-thriving no wave scene, which led to Falco's major-label release, “Blow Your Top”, a 1982 EP issued by Chris Stein's (Blondie) Animal label. Throughout the 1980s and '90s, Falco began dividing his time between Europe and the United States, and released a slow but steady stream of recordings with shifting Panther Burns lineups while holding down another career as an actor.

His latest CD Live In London At The 100 Club, was released in 2012.

Dr. John & the Nite Trippers
Victoria Hall Concert Hall, Cobourg ON
Monday, June 24 @ 8 pm; tickets $67.50 (general admission, theatre-style seating)

Multiple Grammy Award winner and Legend Dr. John, with his band The Nite Trippers, play a special intimate show at Victoria Hall in Cobourg on Monday June 24th. Featuring: Dr. John – vocals, keyboards, guitar; Bobby Floyd – keyboards; Joel Johnson – guitar; Sarah Morrow – trombone; Dwight Bailey – bass; and, Reggie Jackson – drums.

Dr. John, or Mac Rebennack as known to friends and family, is universally celebrated as the living embodiment of the rich musical heritage exclusive to New Orleans. His very colourful musical career began in the 1950s when he wrote and played guitar on some of the greatest records to come out of the Crescent City, including recordings by Professor Longhair, Art Neville, Joe Tex and Frankie Ford.

A notorious gun incident forced the artist to give up the guitar and concentrate on organ and piano. Further trouble at home sent Dr. John west in the 1960s, where he continued to be in demand as a session musician, playing on records by Sonny and Cher, Van Morrison, Aretha Franklin and The Rolling Stones' infamous Exile On Main St. to name a few.

During that time he also launched his solo career, developing the charismatic persona of Dr. John, The Nite Tripper. Adorned with voodoo charms and regalia, a legend was born with his breakthrough 1968 album “Gris-gris”, which established his unique blend of voodoo mysticism, funk, rhythm & blues, psychedelic rock and Creole roots.

After Hurricane Katrina and government bungles bashed New Orleans in 2005, Dr. John immediately stepped up to the plate with both generous relief fund-raising concerts and recordings and angry public words of protest. In 2008 he released “City That Care Forgot,” an album winning him a Grammy for Best Contemporary Blues Album. In 2013, Dr. John won a Grammy for his latest release "Locked Down", produced by one of the biggest bands on the planet, The Black Keys.

Papadon Washington Trio
Rainbow, 76 Murray Street
Tuesday, June 25 @ 9 pm

Every few years, a new champion steps out of nowhere to help carry the blues traditions further into the future. Don Washington arrived right on time with the right tools for the job. Armed with powerful hands and a deep, muscular voice, Papadon is ready to shout the blues like a country preacher.

I was introduced to Don at the Chicago Blues Festival several years ago by my friend Bruce Iglauer (Alligator Records) who said: “Don Washington is an exciting young pianist and singer championing the blues piano tradition with flair, talent and soul. He can pound out a rocking boogie-woogie and get down into an intense slow blues, plus his original songs show plenty of writing talent (and a sense of humor). He’s got a strong voice and a warm and comfortable stage personality that can reach audiences easily. His performance at the 2005 Chicago Blues Festival won him a legion of new fans, and left the crowd hollering for more. I can heartily recommend him for any club or blues festival.”

And here’s what Jim O’Neal, co-founder of Living Blues said about that Chicago performance: “One of the most pleasant surprises I had at the 2005 Chicago Blues Festival was meeting and hearing Papadon Washington. It’s great to hear someone not only carrying on the blues piano tradition in such fine fashion, but knowing how to entertain an audience with it too.”

Weber Brothers
            with special guests Firebelly
Black Sheep Inn, Wakefield QC
Saturday, June 29 @ 8:30 pm; $10

There are bands for which rock and roll is a lifestyle, and then there are bands for which it is life. At an age when most boys are still dreaming of rock stardom, the Weber Brothers were too busy working to care. Four sets a night, four nights a week, the brothers perfected their hard-won sound in Maryland dive bars they were often too young to frequent.

Inspired by their intense love of Scorcese’s classic concert film “The Last Waltz,” Ryan and Sam sent off a self-recorded demo tape to the legendary Ronnie Hawkins, the elder statesman of rock whose former protégés (Robbie Robertson, Rick Danko, et al.) went on to reshape the music history as The Band. Duly impressed by the pair's immense raw talent, Hawkins promptly invited them to audition for his storied backing band, The Hawks. One quick decision and one long van ride later, they arrived at Hawkins’ rural Ontario home, and after surviving the intense musical apprenticeship of his fabled “Rock ‘n’ Roll Bootcamp,” they were in: full-blooded Hawks.

Ten years and six self-released albums later, the Webers have spread their wings, shared the stage with icons like Garth Hudson, Levon Helm, Leon Russell, Derek Trucks and Kris Kristofferson, and toured extensively throughout the US, Canada, and Europe.

“Left Right Left Right,” their seventh release, is nothing less than a rebirth of The Weber Brothers sound. A double album of 26 original songs, it fuses the stomping country rock learned at Hawkins’ knee with the brothers' own love of pop music in all its splendor, from gorgeous “Pet Sounds”/ “White Album” vocal harmonies to blacktop-burning 50’s rockabilly, full-throated Crazy Horse anthems to classic corner group doo-wop. Tightly focused in execution yet epic in scope, “Left Right Left Right” is the Weber Brothers at their finest.

Firebelly is a modern Canadian blues outfit, formed in 2012, driven by a collective passion to create fresh blues music, while respecting its rich & timeless traditions. Lead singer & harp player, front man Mathieu Gagnon, is a captivating storyteller, with the rare ability to make you live through the song, with his sweet powerful voice, & electrifying harp playing. The smooth & funky bass guitar of Dan Grewal, combine with the lively drums of Mike McNeil and the poignant & fearlessly tasteful guitar playing of Fredy Carrière, to create a stripped down Blues sound that is “just right” In a less than a year, they have already garnered major festival, television & national commercial radio airplay. Firebelly represented the Ottawa Blues Society at the 2013 International Blues Challenge in Memphis, Tennessee in January.

FRASER/DALEY www.fraserdaley.com
Alec Fraser on upright bass, percussion and back up vocals and Mike Daley on guitar and lead vocals combine old time blues a la Blind Lemon Jefferson with great original songs in the country blues style. They met in 2007 after a Jeff Healey concert (Alec played bass in Jeff's band for years and is also an award winning producer), started playing together and haven't stopped since. "Fraser plays the upright bass so well, he needs no percussionist. And Daley is a magician on guitar" - The Hamilton Spectator

THE HARPOONIST & THE AXE MURDERER  www.harpoonistaxemurderer.com
This duo with the unusual name is - Shawn Hall on vocals and harp (the Harpoonist) and Matt Rogers on guitar, stomp board, bass, keyboards and back-up vocals (the Axe Murderer). They make a lot of sound for just two guys and bring a fresh take to roots blues with their contemporary lyrics and unique arrangements - yet they remain true to the old blues traditions. It's blues for a changing world - or as one of their fans put it - "blues that gets you in the crotch". Maple Blues Award nominee for Best New Artists Of The Year in 2012.
