One:
The competition is open to female singer/songwriters or
bands with a lead female member of any age, of any music genre, who are
Canadian residents. There are two categories: Solo and Band and finalists
from each category will be invited to perform at the Ottawa Bluesfest as part
of the final play down. Winner of the solo category will receive a cash
prize of $2,000 and winners of the band category will receive $5,000 cash
prize. It is a great opportunity to support the talented female musicians
from across the nation not only monetarily but also with some great exposure at
one of North America's largest outdoor festivals.

Harry Manx has been dubbed an “essential link” between

tradition of the Blues with the depth of classical Indian ragas. His unique

A successful touring performer, Manx has brought his breathtaking
solo shows across Canada and into the USA, Australia, and Europe. He has
appeared at many prestigious festivals, world-class theatres, concert halls and
infamous Blues clubs around the globe. Playing the Mohan Veena, lap steel,
harmonica, stomp box, and banjo, Manx quickly envelops the audience into what
has been dubbed “the Harry Zone” with his warm vocals and the hauntingly
beautiful melodies of his original songs.
Manx is a prolific artist, releasing nine albums in a
eight-year span with no signs of stopping. He has received seven Maple Blues
Awards and his mantel shelf also holds honours from the Canadian Folk Music
Awards, Vancouver magazine Georgia Straight, and the South Australia Blues
Society. He received CBC Radio’s Great Canadian Blues Awards for 2007 and his
albums have garnered five Juno nominations.

thrilling audiences in clubs as a sideman, in 2010, Toronto blues guitarist,
songwriter and singer Chris Antonik stepped out on his own to deliver a
self-titled debut album that took the Canadian and international blues
communities by surprise. It was met with widespread critical acclaim and
significant radio play, debuting at #4 on the Roots Music Report for Canadian
roots music radio play, and at #35 for international blues radio play. It
remained in the top 100 on these airplay charts for over a year.
The
album garnered Antonik a nomination for “Best New Artist of the Year” at the
2011 Maple Blues Awards, which are Canada’s national awards for achievement and
excellence in blues music. The album was also ranked in numerous “Best Blues
Albums of 2010” lists from radio DJs and reviewers in Canada and the US.
Chris
is currently working on his highly-anticipated follow-up album, which will
feature two-time Grammy award-winning vocalist Mike Mattison (The Derek Trucks

With a career that spans over three decades, John
Hammond is one of a handful of white blues musicians who was on the scene
at the beginning of the first blues renaissance of the mid-'60s. That
revival, brought on by renewed interest in folk music around the
U.S., brought about career boosts for many of the great classic blues
players, including Mississippi John Hurt, Rev. Gary Davis, and Skip James.
Some critics have described Hammond as a white Robert Johnson, and Hammond
does justice to classic blues by combining powerful guitar and harmonica
playing with expressive vocals and a dignified stage presence.
Although he's a multi-dimensional artist, one
thing Hammond has never professed to be is a songwriter. In the early
years of his career, it was more important to him that he bring the art form to
a wider audience by performing classic - in some cases forgotten - songs.
Now, more than 30 years later, Hammond continues to do this, touring all over
the U.S., Canada, and Europe from his base in northern New Jersey. Whether it's
with a band or by himself, Hammond can do it all. Seeing him perform
live, one still gets the sense that some of the best is still to come from
this energetic bluesman.

The legendary blues vocalist
Etta James once revealed to the Los Angeles Times that she thought “country
music is like the blues, but it’s something very hip and – I don’t want to say
commercial – but it’s very worldly and good listening.” Admittedly, James wasn’t talking about the
music of Sarah Cripps specifically, but the eloquence of her words lend
themselves well to defining the allure of Sarah’s debut album, “Change”.
While Sarah Cripps is
seemingly coming out of nowhere – armed with a formidable debut record that is
poised to give the country music world a healthy dose of old-fashioned grit
that it’s been missing – don’t be mistaken; even though she’s barely entered
her 20s, it’s been a nearly a decade-long journey to get where she is today.
When she was just 13, the Brighton-reared singer-songwriter played one of her
first breakthrough shows at the Legendary Horseshoe Tavern in Toronto where her
enormous, soulful voice and unique musicality made the collective music
industry’s jaw drop.
Worried that pressure from
major record labels would rush her into completing an album that didn’t
represent who she was, Sarah made the difficult decision to walk away from the
industry in order to dedicate herself to becoming a completely independent
artist; putting out her music on her own terms.
If the risks were big, the
musical reward has been equally huge. “Change” offers a massive dose of country
that’s enriched with clever nods to her pop and rock influences to defy the constraints
of standard genres. ‘Ghost of A Man’ is an opener that lets the power of

Raised in Chicago Illinois by Claudia and Eddie “Lovie
Lee” Watson, Douglas Watson was born to sing R&B, Soul, Gospel, Funk,
Motown & Blues. His first love was the Church where he learned to cherish
the soulful sounds of Gospel music. He later branched out into the world of
Rhythm and Blues encouraged and inspired by his father. His step-brother, the
late Carey Bell also provided inspiration.
At an early age, Douglas learned the love of music and
performing from Lovie Lee, who throughout his career, played with Howlin’ Wolf,
John Lee Hooker, B.B. King, and the Muddy Waters band. This mentoring from the
best, combined with years of performing, has also made Douglas a superb,
seasoned bass guitarist.
After moving to Kitchener, Douglas put together the
hottest backup band he has worked with to date. Besides his original material,
Douglas covers Otis Redding, Marvin Gaye, Wilson Pickett & Al Green just to
name a few. Douglas has been noted for his "full throated vocal
style...that is matched by few”. His full range and style have brought him much
acclaim from some of the most respected R&B vocalists in the industry.

through The Sugar Devils musical diversity. Devilish Guitarist, educator and
musical director Josh ‘Yoshi’ Piche is a Brandon University Music Alumni who

“Calling Dexter” is a highly melodic, and swinging bebop
album, reminiscent of classic recordings by Dexter Gordon, Sonny Rollins, and
Sonny Stitt. The album boasts the Canadian All-Star rhythm section of Andre
White on piano, Alec Walkington on bass, and Dave Laing on Drums. This
in-demand trio has played together for over 20 years, backing up a veritable
who’s who of jazz icons, including Benny Golson, Jimmy Heath, and Slide
Hampton, and lends their tight, cohesive support to Wallis.
The 10 tracks on the album include 5 Wallis originals and
5 timeless standards. Recorded on September 16th & 18th, 2011, by Montreal
impresario George Doxas, the album was captured ʻdirect to tapeʼ. No
post-production editing or corrections were done to ensure an authentic and
honest jazz sound.
Wallis fearlessly attacks the 10 tracks on 5 different
saxophones, a diverse collection of vintage horns that he takes pride in. Most
notably, the closing track “Blowing Sunshine” showcases a rarely heard C-Melody
saxophone, an instrument that hasnʼt been manufactured in over 80 years! Again,
the goal here is not perfection, but rather, humility and depth of character.

Cheryl
Lescom has been part of the Canadian Blues Scene for over
30 years. Starting off as a back-up singer for Ronnie Hawkins and Long
John Baldry, Cheryl has recorded, toured and performed with the likes of
Jeff Healy, Matt Minglewood, Dutch Mason the Downchild Blues Band and
more. After an absence to raise a family, Cheryl recorded two independent
CDs before taking some time off to recover from a bout with cancer. Her “High Heeled Blues” CD features 14
songs including ‘Queen Bee’ written by Juno Award winner (and the CDs producer

When Cheryl teamed up with the
Tucson Choir Boys (“Sameday” Ray Walsh and Dave The Cat)
for an appearance at the Grapejam Acoustic Blues Festival, the response was
phenomenal. After doing a few more gigs together the decision was made to
start writing some original material. After a year of touring and
recording, the Cheryl Lescom & The Tuscon Choir Boys CD was released,
garnering airplay on blues, pop and roots radio across Canada.

Bonneville. Al is also proficient in the styles of Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray

BLUES ON THE RIDEAU
- 2012/13 SEASON LINE-UP

Celebrating its 8th year BOTR has become one
of the premier Blues Series in the country. The combination of a delicious
buffet dinner and dancing to some of Canada’s best blues bands in the friendly,
intimate setting of The Cove has proven to be a real winner. Proceeds from
every show go to support different local charities. $38,000 has been raised
since the Series started and another $7,000 is expected this year.
It’s another great Line-Up for 2012/13 – a combination of
the most popular acts who’ve played the Series previously and some exciting new
talent. The 2012/13 Season starts October 26 and will continue once a
month until May (excluding December). There will be a total of 11 shows this
year – two-night stands (Friday & Saturday) and singles (Friday only).
Most occur on the third weekend of the month. Times are the same for all shows
– 7 to 11 pm. Despite increased costs the ticket price will remain the same as
last year - $60 which includes a full course buffet dinner, dancing and a
donation to the charity.

The blues know no boundaries.
No matter where you live and what you do, it's just part of the human
condition. And when it comes to expressing those feelings through music, two
artists from the prairies do it very well: Suzie Vinnick and Big Dave McLean. Big
Dave, the veteran of the two, is a lifelong Winnipegger, while Suzie is
originally from Saskatoon and now based in Toronto. Both have received many
awards and accolades over the years and have fans around the world. Flatlander
Blues was an event designed to allow these two artists to collaborate on each
other's material, play some blues standards and have some fun with the musical
give and take. They also added guitar slinger Shaun Verreault to the mix. He's
originally from Saskatoon and is a long time member of the band Wide Mouth
Mason, and also manages a successful solo career. The band also included a
Winnipeg-based rhythm section, featuring Gilles Fournier on bass and Daniel Roa
on drums.

Think back to the days when
Crosby, Stills and Nash and Joni Mitchell ruled the airwaves, then add a modern
twist and a love for the banjo and you've got The Wilderness of Manitoba. The
band recently released their latest CD, Island of Echoes, and the CD release
show was perhaps the biggest show of the band's career. An army of attentive
Wilderness of Manitoba fans filled Trinity St. Paul church in Toronto's Annex
neighbourhood; at times they were so quiet that you may wonder if they were
there at all. A beautiful band in a beautiful venue with a crowd on the edge of
their seats.
