SPECIAL EVENTS THIS WEEK

Manitoba Hal
Irene’s Pub, 885 Bank Street
Wednesday, February 27 @ 9:30 pm

Manitoba Hal is an accomplished guitarist and songwriter, but he is best known for his ukulele chops. Hal proves that the uke can be small but mighty as he pulls out powerful blues riffs and melodies.

Hal uses a looping technology to produce a one-man-band experience, adding subtle but important background beats to his extraordinary ukulele strumming and riffing. Many wouldn’t associate the ukulele as a blues instrument, but Hal takes out all the hula, leaving only room for deep blues to prevail. After his grandfather gave him a uke in ’95, Hal found that it transferred easily from his blues guitar style, complimenting his combination of finger picking and strumming, and gospel vocal style.

A tireless live performer, ambassador for the uke and all-round great musician.

AREA HIGHLIGHTS THIS WEEK
******************************************************
The 17th edition of Virée Blues Boréale presents
Colin Perry & Blind
Bar Bistro Le Troquet, 41 Laval Street (Old Hull sector)
Wednesday, February 27 @ 8 pm

To follow the excess of the February 13th launch to a full Petit Chicago and to keep the 17th edition going, Virée Blues Boréale’s team now features a return to the 1930s, a travel back in time, to a period where the recording industry was not fully developed, a period when the labels that were affixed to music styles referred only to early marketing efforts, an era where musicians could still think of playing any musical style, restricted only by their own liking. Our next guests are of that spirit of the ‘30s as they perform their own compositions as well as many other tunes of varied origins that they made theirs along the years, adapting them to their own style. An infectious mix of Period Blues, of Jazz, Country, Swing and of easy listening popular songs, perfect to get a party going!

Hailing from Kentucky, our next guest, guitarist and singer Colin Perry absorbed the rich musical heritage that was around him, including Blues, bluegrass, fiddle music and jazz. He is now based in Montreal. He has performed across all of North America, including five appearances at the Montreal International Jazz festival, the Halifax Atlantic Jazz Festival, The Sackett’s Harbor Jazz Festival, the Carleton Maximum Blues Festival, The Victoriaville Blues Festival, and four appearances at Le Grand Theatre de Quebec.   When not leading “Blind”, he can be found playing guitar behind the well-known Montreal harmonicist Bharath Rajakumar, The Jamies Wood Band or The Griffintown Jug Addicts.   He has also worked with the Susie Arioli Band, with whom he collaborated on the Juno-nominated album “That’s For Me”. His guitar playing reflects the early traditions of jazz and blues guitar, when players like Teddy Bunn, Eddie Lang, Lonnie Johnson, and Dick McDonough could be found lending their personal styles to many different types of music. Performing with “Blind” among others, his strong, clear vocals carry the band across a wide spectrum of early American Music, showing the influence of Jack Teagarden, Tommy Duncan, and Big Bill Broonzy among others. He is accompanied by elite musicians: Peter Mika, on keyboard, Andrew Horton, now replacing Stephen Barry on bass and Bucky Wheaton on drums

A voyage back in time, into the culture of the bluegrass, hemp and tobacco State, birthplace of a world renowned American Whisky.

Harry Manx' World Affairs
featuring Yeshe, Kiran Ahluwalia, Clayton Doley and Steve Marriner
NAC Studio, 54 Elgin Street
Wednesday & Thursday, March 6-7 @ 8 pm; tickets from $45

Harry Manx has been dubbed an “essential link” between the music of East and West, creating musical short stories that wed the tradition of the Blues with the depth of classical Indian ragas. His unique sound is bewitching and deliciously addictive to listen to.

A successful touring performer, Manx has brought his breathtaking solo shows across Canada and into the USA, Australia, and Europe. He has appeared at many prestigious festivals, world-class theatres, concert halls and infamous Blues clubs around the globe. Playing the Mohan Veena, lap steel, harmonica, stomp box, and banjo, Manx quickly envelops the audience into what has been dubbed “the Harry Zone” with his warm vocals and the hauntingly beautiful melodies of his original songs.

Manx is a prolific artist, releasing nine albums in a eight-year span with no signs of stopping. He has received seven Maple Blues Awards and his mantel shelf also holds honours from the Canadian Folk Music Awards, Vancouver magazine Georgia Straight, and the South Australia Blues Society. He received CBC Radio’s Great Canadian Blues Awards for 2007 and his albums have garnered five Juno nominations.

Blend Indian folk melodies with slide guitar blues, add a sprinkle of gospel and some compelling grooves and you’ll get Manx’s unique “mysticssippi” flavour. It’s hard to resist, easy to digest and keeps audiences coming back for more.

After thrilling audiences in clubs as a sideman, in 2010, Toronto blues guitarist, songwriter and singer Chris Antonik stepped out on his own to deliver a self-titled debut album that took the Canadian and international blues communities by surprise. It was met with widespread critical acclaim and significant radio play, debuting at #4 on the Roots Music Report for Canadian roots music radio play, and at #35 for international blues radio play. It remained in the top 100 on these airplay charts for over a year.

The album garnered Antonik a nomination for “Best New Artist of the Year” at the 2011 Maple Blues Awards, which are Canada’s national awards for achievement and excellence in blues music. The album was also ranked in numerous “Best Blues Albums of 2010” lists from radio DJs and reviewers in Canada and the US.

Chris is currently working on his highly-anticipated follow-up album, which will feature two-time Grammy award-winning vocalist Mike Mattison (The Derek Trucks Band, Tedeschi-Trucks Band), and multiple blues award-winners Shakura S’Aida and Steve Marriner (Monkeyjunk) among others. The Pickering audience will get a privileged sneak peak at the album before it is released in April 2013.

John Hammond
Victoria Concert Hall, Cobourg ON
Thursday, March 21 @ 8 pm

With a career that spans over three decades, John Hammond is one of a handful of white blues musicians who was on the scene at the beginning of the first blues renaissance of the mid-'60s. That revival, brought on by renewed interest in folk music around the U.S., brought about career boosts for many of the great classic blues players, including Mississippi John Hurt, Rev. Gary Davis, and Skip James. Some critics have described Hammond as a white Robert Johnson, and Hammond does justice to classic blues by combining powerful guitar and harmonica playing with expressive vocals and a dignified stage presence.

Although he's a multi-dimensional artist, one thing Hammond has never professed to be is a songwriter. In the early years of his career, it was more important to him that he bring the art form to a wider audience by performing classic - in some cases forgotten - songs. Now, more than 30 years later, Hammond continues to do this, touring all over the U.S., Canada, and Europe from his base in northern New Jersey. Whether it's with a band or by himself, Hammond can do it all. Seeing him perform live, one still gets the sense that some of the best is still to come from this energetic bluesman.

Sarah Cripps
Zaphod Beeblebrox, 27 York Street
Friday, March 29; doors @ 8 pm; advance tickets $7

The legendary blues vocalist Etta James once revealed to the Los Angeles Times that she thought “country music is like the blues, but it’s something very hip and – I don’t want to say commercial – but it’s very worldly and good listening.”  Admittedly, James wasn’t talking about the music of Sarah Cripps specifically, but the eloquence of her words lend themselves well to defining the allure of Sarah’s debut album, “Change”.

While Sarah Cripps is seemingly coming out of nowhere – armed with a formidable debut record that is poised to give the country music world a healthy dose of old-fashioned grit that it’s been missing – don’t be mistaken; even though she’s barely entered her 20s, it’s been a nearly a decade-long journey to get where she is today. When she was just 13, the Brighton-reared singer-songwriter played one of her first breakthrough shows at the Legendary Horseshoe Tavern in Toronto where her enormous, soulful voice and unique musicality made the collective music industry’s jaw drop.

Worried that pressure from major record labels would rush her into completing an album that didn’t represent who she was, Sarah made the difficult decision to walk away from the industry in order to dedicate herself to becoming a completely independent artist; putting out her music on her own terms.
If the risks were big, the musical reward has been equally huge. “Change” offers a massive dose of country that’s enriched with clever nods to her pop and rock influences to defy the constraints of standard genres. ‘Ghost of A Man’ is an opener that lets the power of Sarah’s voice reverberate through a rich and edgy country texture: a brilliant portent to what lays ahead in the collection of 11 exceptional songs that are laced with raw emotion and true grit. Tracks like ‘Off the Love’ and ‘Stole the Summer’ brim with a toe-tapping groove, while ‘Can’t See Me Here’ downshifts into a pensive ballad that showcases Sarah’s razor-sharp ability to pen an intensely emotional so free of any platitudes of the typical love song.

All good things come in time. The honest integrity of an album like “Change” – and an artist like Sarah Cripps – has definitely been worth the wait.

CBC RADIO CONCERTS ON DEMAND
*******************************************************
Canada Live - Radio Two @ 7pm, Monday to Thursday; Friday – Radio One

Monday, February 25
concert 1: Chris Whiteley and Diana Braithwaite's Blues Suite, recorded at Glenn Gould Studio in Toronto
In 2010, Chris Whiteley and Diana Braithwaite were awarded Songwriter of the Year at the Maple Blues Awards. They were then commissioned by the Toronto Blues Society to compose a series of blues songs. After two years of work, the duo premiered their Blues Suite project at CBC's Glenn Gould Studio, and Canada Live was on hand to capture the unveiling.

Tuesday, February 26, 2013
concert 1: "Just Bidin' My Time" - The Songs of Gene MacLellan, recorded at Zion Presbyterian Church in Charlottetown, PEI
Gene MacLellan's musical legacy is huge. The Prince Edward Island songwriter's music has sold over 80 million records and has been performed by over 100 artists in more than 25 countries. Gene wrote Anne Murray's first hit, "Snowbird," which sold over a million copies. It was also recorded by Elvis Presley, Chet Atkins, and many others. "Put Your Hand In The Hand" also had major success with such recording artists as Elvis, Anne Murray, Bing Crosby, Loretta Lynn, and Donnie Hathaway. The late songwriter's legacy lives on with his daughter Catherine MacLellan, who has a very successful career as a singer-songwriter in her own right. Catherine hosts this very special tribute to her father, and the music created by the man, performed by Ron Hynes, Lennie Gallant, Dennis Ellsworth and the Haunted Hearts, Meaghan Blanchard, and of course, Catherine MacLellan herself.

Wednesday, February 27
concert 1: Oumou Sangaré, recorded at the Festival Nuits d'Afrique in Montreal
One of Africa's most vocal advocates for the rights of women can also boast of having a fairytale rags-to-riches story. Singer and songwriter Oumou Sangaré was born into a poor and destitute family in Bamako, Mali. She was forced to work as a young child, but her life was changed when she entered a singing competition at age 14 as a dare from her friends. Today, she is one of the world's most recognizable performers and a spokesperson for many charitable organizations. For the last 20 years, she has become a recognized major force in African feminism; her lyrics often tackle women's issues such as marriage, motherhood, and the challenges of living in a patriarchal society. In this performance at the Festival Nuits d'Afrique in Montreal, Sangaré and her band of Malian performers show why she is revered as the 'Songbird of Wassoulou'.

Thursday, February 28
concert 1: Great Big Sea, recorded at the Danforth Music Hall in Toronto
A Great Big Sea concert is always a rollicking good time, with the audience dancing and singing along. Last year, Newfoundland's most popular band celebrated their 20th anniversary with an intimate concert at Toronto's Danforth Music Hall in November. CBC's Canada Live was on hand to record the party and now you can enjoy all of the fun!

Canada Live podcast, released on Thursdays
Thursday, February 28 on the Canada Live podcast
Amelia Curran, recorded at the Arts and Culture Centre in St. John's, Newfoundland
Amelia Curran launched the long awaited and highly anticipated encore to her 2009 Juno award winning CD Hunter Hunter with a sold out concert at the St. John's Arts and Culture Centre. She brought with her a brand new band complete with horns and strings and a bag of great new songs. Her new album Spectators marks the growth of this exceptional singer-songwriter whose precise poetic sharpness and tuneful rhythms set her apart from most of her contemporaries. The new material continues to explore the hope and despair of relationships and the search for a better ending - every word considered and confidently delivered within an air of vulnerability. On this, the opening night of a Canadian tour, Amelia and the band waltzed the home town audience through the heart of her new material with a just enough attention paid to her past catalogue to satisfy the faithful.

concert 1: Great Big Sea, recorded at the Danforth Music Hall in Toronto
A Great Big Sea concert is always a rollicking good time, with the audience dancing and singing along. Last year, Newfoundland's most popular band celebrated their 20th anniversary with an intimate concert at Toronto's Danforth Music Hall in November. CBC's Canada Live was on hand to record the party and now you can enjoy all of the fun!
