******************************************************
Pub Caroling – one more Sunday until Christmas
Irene’s Pub, 885 Bank Street
Sundays – December 23; 4:30-6 pm

The Folklore Centre is hosting Pub Carols for ...oh...at least the 20th year!

It's FREE! We supply books (The Canadian Pub Caroler) and Lee Hayes (formerly of Malaika and Cantarra) will lead us all in learning, re-learning and singing these fine old four part carols. We pass the hat for the Ottawa Foodbank but that, and the beer, are the only charges...and both are optional!

We have just posted a free download of a pub caroling from seven years ago (ottawafolklore.com and look for the link), recorded live by James Stephens and led at the time by Shelley Posen (if you listen carefully, you can hear him in the bass section!).

It's a very fun sing and, with a pint in one hand and a songbook in the other, there is no finer way to celebrate Christmas.

Ray Montford
Playing songs from his new album “Vintage Is Now”
GigSpace, 953 Gladstone Avenue
Saturday, December 29 @ 8 pm; tickets $17/$20

Ray Montford is one of those rare guitarists, like Jeff Beck and David Gilmour, who does not consider virtuosity as a means in itself, and who knows how to make his instrument sing, creating wild and simple beauty while wringing emotion from every note.  Ray recently released his sixth studio album, ‘Vintage Is Now” (produced by Terry Brown (Rush/Max Webster/Klaatu) and Ray Montford), an evocative collection of tunes engaging and inviting the listener into a visceral and melodic odyssey.  “Vintage” is deeply rooted in the guitarist’s distinctive compositional sound and celebrates his early rock/blues influences while creating a journey of depth and character.

There is something to be said about someone having the courage to release an instrumental album in 2012, and looking to make a dent in the pop-drenched landscape of the music world.  Ray Montford, the virtuoso guitarist and Canada's own aficionado of the 6 string, has done just that and done it with great style, grace, and conviction.

“Vintage Is Now” is as beautiful a collection of guitar lead compositions as it is raw and uninhibited.  Picture a journey on a magic carpet ride over a turbulent and roaring sea while lying on pillows of silk and down, flying through the white capped waves.  Opium dreams you say?  Well, Montford knows exactly how to evoke these grandiose visions with his flawless playing and keep you in a state of unencumbered sensory bliss the whole way through.

Could Ray Montford be Canada's own Jeff Beck?  With this gift of an album where so many emotions are touched on throughout, one has to think he may just be carving out his own path as a guitarist and letting his playing do the talking.  Perhaps no one could ever fill the shoes of the guitar gods of the past but it doesn't seem that Ray has set out to achieve this shadow goal.  His playing is unique, honest and still enthusiastic which is rare these days as instrumentals go.  His love for the guitar shines through the music which in essence keeps you, as the listener, so connected to his playing.  Ray's songs become the canvas of one’s imagination and boldly paint a vision where voice and lyrics have no place over the roar of one man and his guitar.

CBC RADIO CONCERTS ON DEMAND
*******************************************************
Canada Live - Radio Two @ 7pm, Monday to Thursday; Friday – Radio One

Monday, December 17
concert 1: Doc Walker Christmas Concert
, recorded at The Pantages Playhouse Theatre in Winnipeg
Doc Walker is one Canada's best known and best loved country bands. For 15 years they've been building a huge fan base across North America and have picked up a Juno and many Canadian Country Music Awards along the way. The core members of the group come from the small city of Portage la Prairie in Manitoba, just west of Winnipeg. This concert, recorded in Winnipeg while the band was on a cross-Canada tour, featured a set of original Christmas songs and classics. The historic Pantages Playhouse Theatre was just short of a sellout and filled with fans who knew all the words to their songs.

concert 2: A Canadian Indie Christmas, recorded at CBC Vancouver
Two of the west coast's most popular indie bands gathered at CBC Vancouver to perform traditional songs of the season, Christmas covers, and freshly minted songs for the Yuletide. Some highlights? Hey Ocean brought down the house with a guilty pleasure cover of Wham's "Last Christmas", while Mother Mother wrote a new song, soon to become a Christmas classic, called "Hit Er Miss Christmas." Who knew too-cool-for-school indie performers looked so good in red Santa hats. Spirits were high and you'll want to sing along.

Tuesday, December 18
concert 1: Sojourners Gospel Christmas
, recorded at Festival Place in Sherwood Park, Alberta
Vancouver-based gospel vocal trio The Sojourners is comprised of Will Sanders, Marcus Mosely, and the newest member, Khari McClelland. For the Christmas season, the Sojourners assembled a set list that included gospel favourites, modern Christmas classics and traditional songs. The audience at Festival Place thoroughly enjoyed the musical diversity of the Sojourners that brought the first blush of the Christmas season.

concert 2: A Very Foggy Christmas, recorded at Hugh's Room in Toronto
Believe it or not, Toronto boasts a bustling bluegrass scene of surprisingly young, dedicated and hot (in a virtuosic way) players. Leading the way for most of the last decade has been a smokin' five-piece known as The Foggy Hogtown Boys. In this concert they set the city's number one roots venue, Hugh's Room, ablaze with seasonal spirit - not to mention fiery pickin' and fiddlin'. Joining this holiday joyride are some very special guests: well-known Toronto roots artists Oh Susanna and Jenny Whiteley.

Wednesday, December 19
concert 1: It's Christmas with the Once

Newfoundland's folk/roots trio "The Once" celebrate the yuletide spirit with their fourth annual Christmas concert at the historic Gower Street United Church in St. John's. The show is a graceful weave of traditional and contemporary folk music with seasonal classics beautifully arranged to feature their spectacular vocals and harmonies. Recently voted Vocal Group of The Year at The Canadian Folk Music Awards, The Once -- Andrew Dale, Geraldine Hollett and Phil Churchill -- are joined by special guest Matthew Byrne.

concert 2: Dala Christmas Special, recorded at the National Arts Centre Studio in Ottawa
Meet us under the mistletoe for the exquisitely talented duo of Amanda Walther and Sheila Carabine of Dala. Darlings of the Canadian music scene, these JUNO nominees have released six albums and toured extensively across North America. This soulful folk-pop duo performed some Christmas music plus some of their favourite original songs, all with their trademark back-and-forth banter.

Thursday, December 20
concert 1: A Not So Silent Night
, recorded at Le Theatre Saint-Denis in Montreal
It's remarkable what a mother will do to keep her kids close by, especially when she's trying to keep a beloved family tradition alive. Take for example Kate McGarrigle, who years ago, devised a scheme so powerful yet so simple that her entire far-flung clan gravitates back to Quebec for Christmas dinner each year: putting on a family Christmas concert. Children Rufus and Martha Wainwright are now in the middle of successful music careers and live far away from the village of St. Sauveur, their birth place and past home of generations of McGarrigles. Yet, since 2005, along with Kate's beloved sisters Anna and Jane and cousins Lily and Sylvan, this great Christmas tradition has been established which is presented here for Canada Live. The idea for the show was based on Kate and Anna's 2005 album, The McGarrigle Christmas Hour, and now has now been christened 'A Not So Silent Night' and has become both a Christmas celebration and a loving tribute to Kate McGarrigle, who sadly passed away in January 2010. Kate would be pleased; not only was her scheme successful, but in tonight's version, 27 members of her family and friends got into the act! An impressive lineup that includes Quebecois stars Robert Charlebois, Monique Mercure and Chloe St-Marie. With a portion of the proceeds going to The Kate McGarrigle Cancer Fund, the spirit of Christmas is indeed alive!
