SPECIAL EVENTS THIS WEEK
******************************************************
Ray Montford
Playing songs from his new album “Vintage Is Now”
GigSpace, 953 Gladstone Avenue
Saturday, December 29 @ 8 pm; tickets $17/$20

Ray Montford is one of those rare guitarists, like Jeff Beck and David Gilmour, who does not consider virtuosity as a means in itself, and who knows how to make his instrument sing, creating wild and simple beauty while wringing emotion from every note.  Ray recently released his sixth studio album, ‘Vintage Is Now” (produced by Terry Brown (Rush/Max Webster/Klaatu) and Ray Montford), an evocative collection of tunes engaging and inviting the listener into a visceral and melodic odyssey.  “Vintage” is deeply rooted in the guitarist’s distinctive compositional sound and celebrates his early rock/blues influences while creating a journey of depth and character.

There is something to be said about someone having the courage to release an instrumental album in 2012, and looking to make a dent in the pop-drenched landscape of the music world.  Ray Montford, the virtuoso guitarist and Canada's own aficionado of the 6 string, has done just that and done it with great style, grace, and conviction.

“Vintage Is Now” is as beautiful a collection of guitar lead compositions as it is raw and uninhibited.  Picture a journey on a magic carpet ride over a turbulent and roaring sea while lying on pillows of silk and down, flying through the white capped waves.  Opium dreams you say?  Well, Montford knows exactly how to evoke these grandiose visions with his flawless playing and keep you in a state of unencumbered sensory bliss the whole way through.

Could Ray Montford be Canada's own Jeff Beck?  With this gift of an album where so many emotions are touched on throughout, one has to think he may just be carving out his own path as a guitarist and letting his playing do the talking.  Perhaps no one could ever fill the shoes of the guitar gods of the past but it doesn't seem that Ray has set out to achieve this shadow goal.  His playing is unique, honest and still enthusiastic which is rare these days as instrumentals go.  His love for the guitar shines through the music which in essence keeps you, as the listener, so connected to his playing.  Ray's songs become the canvas of one’s imagination and boldly paint a vision where voice and lyrics have no place over the roar of one man and his guitar.

Known as Canada's Top Touring Bluesman, JW-Jones has performed in 19 countries, 4 continents, and has released 7 critically acclaimed CDs, including the new 'Seventh Hour'.  Guitar World Magazine featured a CD called ‘Guitar Masters Vol. 2’ that put Jones alongside guitar stars B.B. King, Jimmy Page, and Carlos Santana among others, which led him to an endorsement deal with Gibson guitars.  His last few CDs have hit #1 on B.B. King's Bluesville on Sirius-XM Radio in the U.S.A., and Jones continues to win over audiences across the globe with his high-energy live performances.

Rod Williams, affectionately as Reverend Rod, is a master Harp player and powerful vocalist. Rod has been performing at local venues since the early ‘90s and has played alongside the who’s-who of local and international talent. He brings a passion for the music that is contagious and undeniable! A member of many local bands, including The Soul Shakers, Broadcast Blues Band, Lil' Al's Combo, more recently, King Rattler, Wicked Grin, and an acoustic duo, with Ottawa's own guitar master, JW-Jones.

For the last couple of years, J-Dub and Rod Williams have been enjoying the laid-back and intimate vibe of playing together, stripped down, cool blues and roots music.

BLUES ON THE RIDEAU
          - 2012/13 SEASON LINE-UP
********************************************************
Celebrating its 8th year BOTR has become one of the premier Blues Series in the country. The combination of a delicious buffet dinner and dancing to some of Canada’s best blues bands in the friendly, intimate setting of The Cove has proven to be a real winner. Proceeds from every show go to support different local charities. $38,000 has been raised since the Series started and another $7,000 is expected this year.

It’s another great Line-Up for 2012/13 – a combination of the most popular acts who’ve played the Series previously and some exciting new talent.  The 2012/13 Season starts October 26 and will continue once a month until May (excluding December). There will be a total of 11 shows this year – two-night stands (Friday & Saturday) and singles (Friday only). Most occur on the third weekend of the month. Times are the same for all shows – 7 to 11 pm. Despite increased costs the ticket price will remain the same as last year - $60 which includes a full course buffet dinner, dancing and a donation to the charity.
