CKCU FUNDING DRIVE
2012
STARTS FRIDAY, OCTOBER 19
******************************************************
CKCU Jazz DJ Ron Sweetman explains below how important CKCU is to our
community.
Please consider offering financial support to this station if you can.
Dear Jazz Fan,
CKCU-FM is a remarkable and unique institution;
starting thirty-seven years ago as a campus radio station, it saw and accepted
the challenge of the needs of the diverse communities who live in Canada's
National Capital Region, and today, as a campus/community station, it broadcasts
not only in English but in fourteen other languages spoken in the region. I
also believe that our quality of programming in blues, classical, country,
dance, jazz and world music is unsurpassed by any other Canadian radio station.
We are listener-supported radio; this means we
receive no subsidies whatsoever from any level of government [federal,
provincial or municipal] and can only survive because of your contributions and
our volunteers' dedication.
I am writing to ask if you would consider
sponsoring one hour of alternative/community radio at CKCU-FM 93.1 in Ottawa.
CKCU provides at least six unique and valuable services to the community:
(1) We present a whole range of alternative music that you'll never find on
commercial radio, presented by people with passion and authority. Our jazz,
blues, dance, world, country and classical music programs cover the whole
history of these musics, are presented by acknowledged experts in each area,
and reject the superficial fashion-conscious “Top 40” approach you’ll hear on
the region’s commercial stations.
(2) We provide a voice and a community billboard for many of the communities
that make up our population; we have regular Cree, Creole, Farsi, French,
German, Hindi, Inuktitut, Mandarin, Pashto, Serbian, Spanish, Tagalog, Urdu
& Vietnamese programming.
(3) We give an independent and diverse point of view on political and community
affairs. We are not owned by a large profit-oriented corporation or a
government, and our volunteers and our Board reflect the diverse opinions and
viewpoints of the communities they come from.
(4) We bring you the renowned BBC World news four times every weekday, respected
internationally for its independence and broad coverage.
(5) We support local musicians by publicizing their gigs and airing their
CDs. You don’t have to be a big name to get heard on CKCU.
(6) We keep you informed of upcoming jazz and blues concerts that you might
otherwise miss, by mentioning them on our programs and playing upcoming
artists.
As a former Treasurer and Chairman of the Board, I
can assure you that CKCU has a bare-bones budget. Because most of us are
volunteers, we are able to bring you world-class radio at a cost of a little
over $50.00 per hour! We have three
revenue sources:
A
voluntary levy paid by the students of Carleton University
Income
from organizations who sponsor particular programs
The
community of listeners and musicians [You!]
Our community Funding Drive runs this year from
Friday October 19 until Sunday November 4. Our target for 2012 is $120,000. You
can Dial and Donate at 613-520-3920 or 1-877-520-3920. You can complete a
Pre-Pledge form. You can pledge by E-mail at www.ckcufm.com. However you pledge, you will
receive a tax receipt for donations over $25.00, as we are a registered
educational charity.
My show "In A Mellow Tone" airs every
Wednesday from 9-11 pm in Ottawa [and around the world on the Internet at http://www.ckcufm.com]. When you pledge,
please mention “In A Mellow Tone” if you want to support my program
specifically.
Please see if you can sponsor just one hour of
alternative/community radio. It's your community and your radio station and
will cost you a tax-free $50.00. [Less than one dollar a week for 24/7 quality entertainment!].
With my sincere thanks for anything you can do,
Ron Sweetman
(CKCU Volunteer since 1976)

The 16th edition of Virée Blues Boréale presents
The Stephen Barry Band
Bar Bistro Le Troquet, 41 Laval Street (in the Old Hull sector)
Wednesday, October 10 @ 8 pm
Just think of their almost 40
years of stage expertise, or of their 9 albums, or of the trivial details that
they know, for instance Bo Diddley’s frequent flatulences while on stage at the
legendary Rising Sun in Montreal, or Big Mama Thornton’s famous “Tough Milk”
(gin with milk), and you’ll understand right away that our next guests at Virée
Blues Boréale are a high grade among Canada’s Bluesmen! On stage – impeccably
sounding instruments, four experienced musicians, solid jazzy blues and lots of
white hair! It’s The Stephen Barry Band, on the road for over
thirty-seven years now and always improving: the result is astonishing with
precision and charming with finesse.
The Stephen Barry Band has been active since 1975. Leader Stephen Barry is a singer and an outstanding bass player who has built up a major stage expertise nationally as well as internationally during the last thirty-seven years. Along the way, the quality and virtuosity of these musicians has led them to accompany top Blues personalities who were performing in Canada: The Stephen Barry Band performed with B.B. King, John Lee Hooker, Bo Diddley, Buddy Guy, Big Mama Thornton and, more recently, with Hubert Sumlin, Pinetop Perkins, Johnnie Johnson, Susie Arioli and the highly respected Oliver Jones. The group also accompanied the legendary Vann "Piano Man" Walls on his CD "In the Evening" and in performance.

The Stephen Barry Band was awarded the Best Canadian Blues Group title at the “1996 Jazz Report Awards ", and on the same occasion, "Happy Man" was awarded the Best Recording title. Stephen Barry was also honoured by the 2004 Lys Blues Awards for his whole career (which amounted to 32 years at the time).
In performance, you will like
his distinguished and friendly style as well as his
professionalism. The microphone’s rotation brings much variety to
the show; from Stephen Barry’s deep and rich voice, typical of the Blues, to
the drummer, Gordon Adamson’s husky sound, with rock and swing accents and
finally to the guitarist, Andrew Cowan, his voice tainted with folk and
country sounds. Jody Golick is the
voiceless part of the group but he’s sure to be heard through the sounds of his
three saxophones. The merging of those
various styles amounts to an outstanding performance.
Their recent album, “DUO”, mixes country, folk and lots of traditional Blues and is quite different from their previous releases: a duo for guitar (Andrew Cowan) and bass (Stephen Barry), an entrancing moment, unbelievably beautiful, where tones in simple yet intense settings.

Colin James
NAC Southam Hall,
Monday, October 15 @
8 pm; tickets
from $40
A true standard-bearer of Canadian rock with an
excellent reputation on the international scene, guitarist Colin James has a mantel full of JUNOs
and Maple Blues Awards, and a collection of gold certified albums proudly
displayed on his walls. Each of his
frequent Festival performances is an event in itself, as he proved with last
year's remarkable acoustic concert, presented as a duet with Chris Caddell. The
fret-board ace returns to share music from his latest album “Fifteen”, the 15th
in a 25-year career.
From the prairies of Saskatchewan to sharing the stage with arguably the greatest and most influential guitarists of all time, Colin James still remembers those words of advice given to him by the late, great, Stevie Ray Vaughan. “I’m opening doors for you, just walk through them.” For every young guitar player growing up in a small town, Colin James’ story is their story – one of drive, passion, ambition and a strong sense that their destiny lay beyond the safe confines of home. Looking back on a career that now spans two decades, Colin has walked through more than just a few doors to reach the level of success that he enjoys today. He continues to record the music that he loves, has sold multi-platinum many times over, and his concert tours continue to sell out coast to coast.
Colin will be performing with his seven-piece band, and along with selections from his new CD, “Fifteen”, he will play hits from his vast repertoire, including ‘Into The Mystic’, ‘Why’d You Lie’, ‘Man’s Gotta Be A Stone’, and many more from his fourteen previous albums.

When he moved north of the 49th parallel, he entered the Canadian blues scene like a piano falling from the sky with incendiary performances at Edmonton and Calgary blues festivals. Making his home in Victoria B.C., he was enlisted by Bill Johnson to play on the Juno and Maple Blues Award nominated recording “Still Blue”. In early 2012, he was touring Ontario as a Maple Blues Award nominee and recording his first all-Canadian album.

Sue Foley & Peter
Karp
Black Sheep Inn,
Wakefield QC
Thursday, November 8
@ 8:30 pm; tickets $20 advance (plus surcharges)
On the heels of Blind Pig recording artists Peter Karp
and Sue Foley's 2010 critically acclaimed and artistically daring collaboration
"He Said - She Said" comes their next exciting CD: "Beyond The
Crossroads." A high voltage, plank spankin', piano boogyin', slide guitar
stompin' blues-rockin' CD that showcases 12 brilliantly crafted and unique
original compositions that have become the trademark of these two noted
singer-songwriter guitarists.
"Beyond The Crossroads" is a loud celebration
of triumph over tragedy, optimism over despair and faith over hopelessness. It
delivers on the promise of their groundbreaking, critically acclaimed 2010 song-cycle,
"He Said - She Said": an inspired and compelling anthology of
original songs, adapted from long distance letters and e-mails the two shared
over a particularly difficult and dark period in their lives.
"Beyond The Crossroads" marks the newest
chapter in the Karp-Foley collaboration. Recorded in the US and Canada it
features their road band, Mike Catapano on drums and Niles Terrat on bass, as
well as some old friends and bandmates.
"Beyond The Crossroads is a natural extension of
what we started with "He Said - She Said" but it's not based on a
concept or correspondence. This time around around we were just focused on
writing great songs with common themes. Positivity, renewal, absolution."
says Foley.
"These times are trying - in the heart and in
the streets. Restless winds are blowing. It's personal not business. Now is the
time to fire up the amps and blow heat." quips Karp.

Rodeo Kings
Kings

with Special Appearances by Matt Andersen, Amy Helm, Mary Margaret
O'Hara
with guests Harlan Pepper
NAC, Southam Hall
Friday, November 9 @
8 pm; tickets
from $37
Blackie and The Rodeo Kings has organically evolved into
one of the finest roots-oriented bands in North America, having released six
CDs and evolved a feeling of brotherhood manifested in a sense of groove,
timbral blend and melodic and rhythmic play that is distinctive, mystical,
energizing and constantly evocative. Blackie and the Rodeo Kings remain
one of Canada’s greatest musical treasures.
The Kings & Queens concert pairs the band with some of their favourite female singers and friends. The idea for Kings & Queens was hatched in a rental van at the end of a Rodeo Kings tour. Late one night, on a long drive between Somewhere and Somewhere-else, the band began talking about the various female artists they have had the privilege of working with over the years. What began with a page torn out of a notebook and a lot of interjections like “Hey, what about…” and “Wouldn’t it be great to work with …” has transformed into a whole album featuring these legendary and iconic female voices; one on each of 14 stellar tracks.

Colin Linden
Upstairs at The Waterfront; 590 Liverpool Road, Pickering
Friday, November 16 @ 9 pm; Tickets: $45, available at The Waterfront or online
Music
By The Bay Live 30th show celebration with the man who started it
all!
He was eleven years old when
he met blues legend Howlin' Wolf
from Chicago. The massive fellow took lovingly care of the kid and told him to
listen to the music of Charlie Patton
and Son House, if he wanted to
play the blues himself. Many years later, in 1999, the Linden-produced “Tribute
To Howlin' Wolf“ album was nominated for a Grammy award. On his new CrossCut
album, “Still Live“ Colin dedicates a song to the man who had an important
effect on him.
Colin
Linden is a larger-than-life blues
and roots personality, particularly in Canada. A couple of years ago, the
Toronto-born artist moved to Nashville, Tennessee, where he's feeling on top of
the world because he can hear great roots music at every street corner.
Along with Joe Henry and T-Bone Burnett, Colin
Linden must be regarded one of today's prominent roots and blues
producers. Colin has produced round about 100 albums, projects for The Band, Colin James, Janiva Magness, Bruce
Cockburn and others. Most of all,
he's an accomplished, stylish slide guitar virtuoso, playing on more than three
hundred releases. He played some of the music in the Coen Brothers film 'O
Brother, Where Art Thou'.
He's a musician's musician,
performing in a class of his own, often compared with contemporaries like Ry Cooder or David Lindley. Colin is a talented songwriter and a first-rate
slide guitar player with a deep, mellow tone. His picking technique is
exceptional and sophisticated with unexpected twists and tunings and considered
one of the finest slide guitar players, worldwide!

Gogo has garnered three Juno Nominations, the Saturday Night Blues' Great
Canadian Blues Award for a lifetime contribution to the blues in Canada, WCMA
Musician of the Year, and has twice been named Maple Blues Guitarist of the
Year. His 11th release, “Soul
Bender”, is adding even more acclaim to an already impressive list and in
September picked up the Western Canadian Music Award for Blues Album of the
Year.
Soul Bender features outstanding new tracks; some Gogo
originals and a few covers that run the gamut of sources and styles (Procol
Harum, Elmore James, The Doors, Michael Jackson) but infused with a Gogo twist.
The album was recorded by Rick Salt at
Lois Lane Studios, where five of Gogo's previous albums have been recorded. Every effort was made to capture the feel of
Gogo's incredible live shows, and the result showcases Gogo's best guitar and
vocal performances ever! Soul Bender is
a sizzling, hard-rocking blues album that is filled with heavy grooves, grit
and emotion.
Gogo continues to tour relentlessly, bringing his
cutthroat wit and virtuosic blues guitar playing to festivals and headline
performances across Canada and the US this summer. He will continue his blistering tour schedule
across Canada and the Europe in the second half of 2012.

NAC Presents
catl
NAC 4th
Stage
Thursday, November 22
@ 7:30 pm
Dirty. Sweaty. Fun. catl is a Toronto-based, super high energy,
rhythm and blues trio who’s main motive is to get you movin’ and grindin’ on
the dance floor.
Influenced by Mississippi Delta blues musicians such as
Fred McDowell, Charlie Patton and Son House, catl's sound is pure
floor-stomping juke-joint blues.
For over three years catl has packed the Dakota Tavern
(Toronto) each month, with loyal fans lining up outside for the chance to
wriggle and shake on the dance floor. From their humble beginnings as a
house-party band, catl went on to win the 2009 Toronto Blues Society Talent
Search, paving the way for them to play other festivals such as the South Side
Shuffle, the Kitchener Blues Fest and a prime spot on an outdoor main-stage at
the Montreal International Jazz Festival in 2011.
Having opened for acts such as The Jon Spencer Blues
Explosion, Heavy Trash, Andre Williams, The Sadies, and Detroit garage-rockers
The Gories – catl still jump at the chance to play their stripped-down sound at
house parties and parking lots, doing what they love most: having fun and
making people dance. In April of 2012,
catl released their 3rd full length record, "Soon this will all
be gone" to critical acclaim.

BLUES ON THE RIDEAU
- 2012/13 SEASON LINE-UP
********************************************************
Celebrating its 8th year BOTR has become one
of the premier Blues Series in the country. The combination of a delicious
buffet dinner and dancing to some of Canada’s best blues bands in the friendly,
intimate setting of The Cove has proven to be a real winner. Proceeds from every
show go to support different local charities. $38,000 has been raised since the
Series started and another $7,000 is expected this year.
It’s another great Line-Up for 2012/13 – a combination of
the most popular acts who’ve played the Series previously and some exciting new
talent. The 2012/13 Season starts October 26 and will continue once a
month until May (excluding December). There will be a total of 11 shows this
year – two-night stands (Friday & Saturday) and singles (Friday only).
Most occur on the third weekend of the month. Times are the same for all shows
– 7 to 11 pm. Despite increased costs the ticket price will remain the same as
last year - $60 which includes a full course buffet dinner, dancing and a
donation to the charity.
October 26 - TERRY

great band “Heaven’s Radio”. His hot trio now consists of him on guitar and
vocals with Wayne Stoute on drums and Lyndell Montgomery on bass - they were
semi-finalists at the 2012 Memphis International Blues Challenge. Keyboardist
Peter Measroch will join them for this show.

Derek Miller
Lions Club Hall,
Kingston ON
Saturday, November
10;
tickets $25 (or $20 advance – 613 384-8168)
Guitarist and singer/songwriter Derek Miller is a
journeyman musician with eclectic taste and a knack for roots-inflected rock. Born on the Six Nations of the Grand River,
Mohawk Territory, in Canada, Miller became interested in music in his early
teens and by the late ‘90s had not only toured with iconic Canadian vocalist
Buffy Sainte-Marie, but also garnered Juno Awards for both his debut album,
“Music Is The Medicine” and his sophomore album, “The Dirty Looks”, in 2008.
Derek’s latest album, “Derek Miller with Double Trouble”
takes us to the heart of Native Americana romanticism. It uses vintage tones and aesthetics of ‘50s rock
‘n’ roll with a modern twist, telling the story of a mythical man who has a
blind moment of insanity and the events that got him to that point. The development in his newest recordings
describes, in a metaphoric way, the trials and tribulations of the artist.
Derek Miller is a dynamic performer; whether you catch
him live or are listening to his studio albums, you can get a real sense of an
artist striving for the pursuit of perfection in his work and life.

From his work with Led Zeppelin to his Grammy award winning project with Alison Krauss, Plant has reinvented himself while staying true to his passion for music. His latest project, Band of Joy, features some of the most well respected musicians on the scene, including guitarist and musical director Buddy Miller, multi-instrumentalist Darrell Scott and vocalist and instrumentalist Patty Griffin. In June of 2011, he appeared with his group Band of Joy at the TD International Jazz Winnipeg Festival to a packed concert hall.
