Virée
Blues Boréale 16th season presents
Louis
Janelle Blues Band
Le Troquet,
41 Laval Street, in the Old Hull sector
Wednesday,
September 12 @ 8 pm
With
a 15+ year career, our next guest still surprises those who thought they knew
him. In the course of his career, he has worked with more than 10 of the
best known Blues groups. For the last 10 years, he has been working on his
solo projects, one of which was nominated for «Album of the Year» at the 2006
Lys Blues Awards.
Born
in Terrebonne, Quebec in 1964, Louis
Janelle’s musical beginnings were rather peculiar! He started on a drum
set that he put together using old ice cream cans, cardboard boxes and pie
plates. He also built his first electric guitar from a discarded entrance
stair! He received his first real electric guitar at 10, a gift from his
sister. He played it for almost 4 years with HIS tuning, as musical
knowledge was lacking at the time! Indeed, Louis Janelle is one of those self-taught people who persevered to
major levels of skill.
Louis
Janelle Blues Band’s repertoire consists mostly of Louisiana Swamp Blues
in the style of Lazy Lester, Slim Harpo, Lightnin' Slim, Guitar Gable and
others, and of Chicago Blues, as played by Muddy Waters, Little Walter,
Howlin' Wolf, Jimmy Reed, etc. The band’s repertoire also includes some
Swing, Zydeco, a bit of R&B and even a few Latin rhythms. The
search for a variety of rhythms and atmospheres is one of the group’s musical
obsessions. This wide variety of styles and atmospheres inspires the group to
personalized original interpretations of old hits of the ‘50s, of some
forgotten Blues, of rarities from the ‘60s and of present-day Blues that are
familiar to all of us!
The current lineup is Louis Janelle (vocals and guitar), with his buddy and co-founder of the initial group, Gilles Bonenfant (harmonica), Gaetan Boulerice (bass) and Eloi Bertholet (drums). The Louis Janelle Blues Band is now working on its 2nd album due out next April.

MonkeyJunk
Studio Theatre, Perth
ON
Friday, September 14
@ 8 pm
Upon being asked about his passion for
his music, delta blues legend Son House said “I’m talkin’ ‘bout
the blues, I ain’t talkin’ ‘bout monkey junk”. And thus was born the quirky name of the equally quirky
contemporary blues band MonkeyJunk. Blending delta blues, soul boogie,
and country with modern presentation, MonkeyJunk boasts
an innovative and creative approach to the blues. Guitars, keys, drums, harp
and vocals are their sound; no bass – but Hound Dog
Taylor didn’t have a bass player, and Little Walter often didn’t use one either.
Steve Marriner,
Tony D, and Matt Sobb play
well off of each other, seamlessly creating an upbeat, catchy sound that is a
cross between Muddy Waters, Lightnin’
Hopkins, swamp R&B and soul boogie that will keep your foot
tappin’ and your body movin’.
Winner of the 2012 Juno for their sophomore
release, “To Behold”

Colin James
NAC Southam Hall,
Monday, October 15 @
8 pm; tickets
from $40
A true standard-bearer of Canadian rock with an
excellent reputation on the international scene, guitarist Colin James has a mantel full of JUNOs
and Maple Blues Awards, and a collection of gold certified albums proudly
displayed on his walls. Each of his
frequent Festival performances is an event in itself, as he proved with last
year's remarkable acoustic concert, presented as a duet with Chris Caddell. The
fret-board ace returns to share music from his latest album “Fifteen”, the 15th
in a 25-year career.
From the prairies of Saskatchewan to sharing the stage with arguably the greatest and most influential guitarists of all time, Colin James still remembers those words of advice given to him by the late, great, Stevie Ray Vaughan. “I’m opening doors for you, just walk through them.” For every young guitar player growing up in a small town, Colin James’ story is their story – one of drive, passion, ambition and a strong sense that their destiny lay beyond the safe confines of home. Looking back on a career that now spans two decades, Colin has walked through more than just a few doors to reach the level of success that he enjoys today. He continues to record the music that he loves, has sold multi-platinum many times over, and his concert tours continue to sell out coast to coast.
Colin will be performing with his seven-piece band, and along with selections from his new CD, “Fifteen”, he will play hits from his vast repertoire, including ‘Into The Mystic’, ‘Why’d You Lie’, ‘Man’s Gotta Be A Stone’, and many more from his fourteen previous albums.

East
Meets Vest – David Vest
The Waterfront; 590 Liverpool Road Pickering
Friday October 19; tickets
$35
David Vest is the real thing, raised in Birmingham, Alabama and the juke joints all along the Gulf Coast. He`s played with Big Joe Turner in the early ‘60s, toured with Jimmie ‘T99’ Nelson, Lavalle White and co-lead the legendary Paul deLay Band.
When he moved north of the 49th parallel, he entered the Canadian blues scene like a piano falling from the sky with incendiary performances at Edmonton and Calgary blues festivals. Making his home in Victoria B.C., he was enlisted by Bill Johnson to play on the Juno and Maple Blues Award nominated recording “Still Blue”. In early 2012, he was touring Ontario as a Maple Blues Award nominee and recording his first all-Canadian album.
What came together in Toronto on Mardi Gras Day 2012 wasn’t just history, it was magic. The ‘East Meets Vest’ tour began in July at the Tremblant International Blues Festival and will continue wherever the road might lead.

Teddy Leonard (Fathead), Mike Fitzpatrick (Downchild), Gary Kendall

The 2012 Blues Festival Guide magazine 10th anniversary issue has arrived and blues fans

Started in 2003, The Blues Festival Guide magazine
was a Media Sponsor of the 2003 government-proclaimed Year of The Blues. In
2006, three years later, “The Guide” received recognition from the Blues
Foundation by being a recipient of the coveted Keeping The Blues Alive award
for print media. That same year, they also received an award from the West

concert 1: Jarvis Church, recorded at the Jackson Triggs Amphitheatre in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario
We all know Jarvis Church from his days with the hard rocking R&B group The Philosopher Kings, and more recently as a solo love song crooner. Jarvis is an incredible talent with a soulful voice. His latest project, Jarvis Church's Soul Station, has Jarvis and his crack band of soul musicians taking a look back, way back before the days of The Philosopher Kings. Soul Station is in the midst of releasing a series of recordings that pay homage to the soul singers that influenced Jarvis. The first in that series features the music of Sam Cooke. For this concert we catch up with Jarvis Church's Soul Station at the Jackson-Triggs amphitheatre in Niagara On The Lake. The Soul Station performs a 1960's soul style revue of all of the great Sam Cooke songs. But then the surprising part of the night comes when Jarvis sings two of his own songs, "Do It Better" and "She Keeps Me Up All Night". While these songs were written in 2012 you would never know it. They sound like they are lost B-Sides by Sam Cooke himself. Incredible!
