BLUES HIGHLIGHT of the WEEK
******************************************************
The Harpoonist & The Axe Murderer Partner With Music Maker Relief Foundation

Vancouver’s edgy blues duo The Harpoonist & The Axe Murderer have partnered with the Music Maker Relief Foundation to help impoverished and aging blues musicians put food on the table and get the medical help that they need. Through their crowd funding campaign on indiegogo.com/helptheblues, The Harpoonist & The Axe Murderer are offering several perks to donors, including digital downloads of their CDs, DVD packages and more.

Music Maker Relief Foundation preserves and promotes the musical traditions of the American South. Since 1994 they have partnered with traditional artists over 55 years old who survive on a yearly income of less than $18,000, sustaining their day-to-day needs while building their careers. Through Music Maker, our rich heritage of folk music will not be lost with the passing of time.

The Harpoonist & The Axe Murderer are not known for sticking to conventionality. Their modern take on blues and roots music has been described as “‘blues that gets you in the crotch” and their dedication to preserving and promoting the blues has helped introduce the genre to younger fans all over the country.

For more information or to donate to the campaign visit www.indiegogo.com/helptheblues  and www.musicmaker.org

The 16th edition of Virée Blues Boréale presents
The Ben Racine Blues Band
Le Petit Chicago, 50 Promenade du Portage (in the Old Hull sector)
Wednesday, September 26 @ 8 pm

Our next guest is coming to Virée Blues Boréale because he wants to launch his first album in his native Ottawa region.

Ben Racine displays a soul voice fit for the greatest R&B artists of the ‘50s and ‘60s.  Inspired by great singers like Junior Walker, Bill Withers, Stevie Wonder and Clarence Carter, he’ll bring you back to a time when the voice was the heart of music.  In addition to his voice, Ben’s guitar playing can spread over an extensive range of styles which will surely please the Blues aficionados, as well as funk music fans.   The minute he comes on stage, his catchy energy teams up with his charisma to bring out a highly special sound.  He continues on his dazzling drive to the top of the Canadian Blues Circuit, less and less as a newcomer with an All-Star Band, and now as the Ben Racine Blues Band.

The band:
Kevin Mark (Acoustic & Electric bass) is one of Eastern Canada’s most renowned artists.   Since 1998, he has been awarded or nominated for some twenty awards in various galas.  He brings decades of experience as well as a solid groove to Ben Racine’s group.

Little Frankie Thiffault (Tenor & Baritone Saxophones) is referred to by many as one of Montreal’s best Blues saxophonists.  Little Frankie was awarded a Lys Blues for «Top Musical Performance of the Year» three times.  And he’s at his best in concert performances!   His unique sound pushes further in the steps of the likes of Junior Walker, David ‘Fathead’ Newman and King Curtis.

Mat “Moose” Mousseau (Baritone Sax), has contributed to numerous recordings and repeatedly performed locally as well as internationally.  He now brings to this group his well-rounded solid sound.   He has also been a member of the Kevin Mark Blues Band since 2004.

Nicky Estor (Drums), a professional musician since 16, Nicky toured internationally with Blues stars like Nico Wayne Toussaint, Shawn Pittman, Preston Hubbard and Sonny Boy Terry.  Influenced by old school drummers like Fred Below and Richard Innes, Nicky brings his inspired Blues of the ‘50s and his R&B playing to the Ben Racine Band.

Colin James
NAC Southam Hall,
Monday, October 15 @ 8 pm; tickets from $40

A true standard-bearer of Canadian rock with an excellent reputation on the international scene, guitarist Colin James has a mantel full of JUNOs and Maple Blues Awards, and a collection of gold certified albums proudly displayed on his walls.  Each of his frequent Festival performances is an event in itself, as he proved with last year's remarkable acoustic concert, presented as a duet with Chris Caddell. The fret-board ace returns to share music from his latest album “Fifteen”, the 15th in a 25-year career.

From the prairies of Saskatchewan to sharing the stage with arguably the greatest and most influential guitarists of all time, Colin James still remembers those words of advice given to him by the late, great, Stevie Ray Vaughan. “I’m opening doors for you, just walk through them.”  For every young guitar player growing up in a small town, Colin James’ story is their story – one of drive, passion, ambition and a strong sense that their destiny lay beyond the safe confines of home.  Looking back on a career that now spans two decades, Colin has walked through more than just a few doors to reach the level of success that he enjoys today. He continues to record the music that he loves, has sold multi-platinum many times over, and his concert tours continue to sell out coast to coast.

Colin will be performing with his seven-piece band, and along with selections from his new CD, “Fifteen”, he will play hits from his vast repertoire, including ‘Into The Mystic’, ‘Why’d You Lie’, ‘Man’s Gotta Be A Stone’, and many more from his fourteen previous albums.

David Vest is the real thing, raised in Birmingham, Alabama and the juke joints all along the Gulf Coast. He`s played with Big Joe Turner in the early ‘60s, toured with Jimmie ‘T99’ Nelson, Lavalle White and co-lead the legendary Paul deLay Band.

When he moved north of the 49th parallel, he entered the Canadian blues scene like a piano falling from the sky with incendiary performances at Edmonton and Calgary blues festivals. Making his home in Victoria B.C., he was enlisted by Bill Johnson to play on the Juno and Maple Blues Award nominated recording “Still Blue”. In early 2012, he was touring Ontario as a Maple Blues Award nominee and recording his first all-Canadian album.

What came together in Toronto on Mardi Gras Day 2012 wasn’t just history, it was magic. The ‘East Meets Vest’ tour began in July at the Tremblant International Blues Festival and will continue wherever the road might lead.

NAC Presents
Blackie & the Rodeo Kings
Kings & Queens
with Special Appearances by Matt Andersen, Amy Helm, Mary Margaret O'Hara
with guests Harlan Pepper
NAC, Southam Hall
Friday, November 9 @ 8 pm; tickets from $37

Blackie and The Rodeo Kings has organically evolved into one of the finest roots-oriented bands in North America, having released six CDs and evolved a feeling of brotherhood manifested in a sense of groove, timbral blend and melodic and rhythmic play that is distinctive, mystical, energizing and constantly evocative.  Blackie and the Rodeo Kings remain one of Canada’s greatest musical treasures.

The Kings & Queens concert pairs the band with some of their favourite female singers and friends. The idea for Kings & Queens was hatched in a rental van at the end of a Rodeo Kings tour. Late one night, on a long drive between Somewhere and Somewhere-else, the band began talking about the various female artists they have had the privilege of working with over the years. What began with a page torn out of a notebook and a lot of interjections like “Hey, what about…” and “Wouldn’t it be great to work with …” has transformed into a whole album featuring these legendary and iconic female voices; one on each of 14 stellar tracks.

NAC Presents
catl
NAC 4th Stage
Thursday, November 22 @ 7:30 pm
Dirty. Sweaty. Fun. catl is a Toronto-based, super high energy, rhythm and blues trio who’s main motive is to get you movin’ and grindin’ on the dance floor.

Influenced by Mississippi Delta blues musicians such as Fred McDowell, Charlie Patton and Son House, catl's sound is pure floor-stomping juke-joint blues.

For over three years catl has packed the Dakota Tavern (Toronto) each month, with loyal fans lining up outside for the chance to wriggle and shake on the dance floor. From their humble beginnings as a house-party band, catl went on to win the 2009 Toronto Blues Society Talent Search, paving the way for them to play other festivals such as the South Side Shuffle, the Kitchener Blues Fest and a prime spot on an outdoor main-stage at the Montreal International Jazz Festival in 2011.

Having opened for acts such as The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Heavy Trash, Andre Williams, The Sadies, and Detroit garage-rockers The Gories – catl still jump at the chance to play their stripped-down sound at house parties and parking lots, doing what they love most: having fun and making people dance.  In April of 2012, catl released their 3rd full length record, "Soon this will all be gone" to critical acclaim.

concert 1: Mundo Montreal: Zal Sissokho and Guests
, recorded at Le Lion D'or in Montreal
An assortment of stringed instruments like the guitar, banjo, violin and kora bring together traditional Mandingue music (sung in Wolof) with North American roots, folk, and rhythm and blues (sung in English and French). Last spring, the great Senegalese griot and kora player Zal Idrissa Sissokho invited a few of his friends to perform together on one stage in Montreal as part of the CBC world music series Mundo Montreal. We'll hear roots guitarist and singer Michael Jerome Brown as well as blues guitarist and singer Cécile Doo-Kingué and the rhythm and blues chanteuse Doba. A mashup of musical styles and personalities from Africa and North America

CBC Radio 1 broadcast, Fridays at 2:05 pm

recorded at Jackson-Triggs Amphitheatre in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario
Back by popular demand, the third annual Rootstock concert at Jackson-Triggs Amphitheatre in Niagara-On-The-Lake was once again recorded by Canada Live.
