SPECIAL EVENTS THIS WEEK
******************************************************
André & the J-Tones
D’Arcy McGee’s, 44 Sparks Street
Thursday & Friday, August 9-10; 9 pm

Formed in 2004, André Bisson the frontman, first had the idea of forming a rhythm & blues band while attending the Applied Music Program at Mohawk College in Hamilton, Ontario. It was there he was able to find some of the best musicians in the city that were all devoted and hard working professionals, who all shared the love of the music. Andre’s band consists of 5 players including Andre on Vocals/Guitar, as well as a Bassist, Drummer, Trumpet, and Tenor Saxophone player. This combination of skilled players allows the band to have tight horn lines as well as a heavy groove in the rhythm section making everyone in the room sit up and listen.

From André:
Andre & The J-Tones are coming to Ottawa's D'Arcy McGee's Thrice! Thursday, August 9 @ 9 pm and Friday, August 10 @ 5 pm for the National Capital Craft Beer Week, then again at 9 pm.  Come say hi to the band before they go to the UK & Ireland to play some Blues, Beer, Sunflower Festivals! (NEW unofficial CD available too).
Andre Bisson (Vocals/Guitar), Brad Cheeseman (Bass), Matt Burns (Bass), Francis Smith (Tenor Sax), Loretta Hale (Trumpet)

Thorbjørn Risager
Rainbow, 76 Murray Street
Tuesday & Wednesday, August 14-15

Danish singer Thorbjørn Risager, praised for his rough and strong voice by an unanimous choir of critics from a growing number of countries – 15 the last time we counted them - is a soft-spoken gentleman off stage. He is the leader of his seven-piece band mainly for practical reasons – to bring any little issue into a group discussion can be quite time-consuming. He also composes most of the band’s music, and during the performance he is the obvious center of attention, even if the band has a charming way of passing round the task of introducing the songs between them, so that each musician gets his word in.
And this is a real smooth organization that has divided all practical tasks such as web master, CD sales on gigs etc between themselves. Which makes life easier in the midst of their heavy touring schedule.
In 2003 he started his band, selected musicians he liked both musically and personally, and the fact that up until today only one of them left and was replaced, at an early stage of the band’s career, proves that the choice was excellent.
But of course Thorbjørn’s musical interest started long before this. He played the saxophone from the age of 12, then guitar – but the singing was more of a coincidence at first. He was exposed to the blues through a neighbour, a middle-aged gentleman who was friends with his parents, and who started playing blues records to the young Thorbjørn. That’s how his life-long love story with the blues started, with B B King as his biggest hero. Ray Charles is one of his other obvious influences, but today, with almost 40 recorded songs from his own pen, he has defined his own sound and style.
His mixture of genres is something that is sometimes mentioned by critics, who are looking for more homogeneity. But this is Thorbjørn’s deliberate choice. To hear a band that plays one shuffle after another, or only jump blues through an entire CD or concert, might please some critics but there’s definitely a risk that the audience will get bored.  So he weaves threads of soul, gospel, rock, R&B and funk into his music, to create a variety and keep the audience interested, something that the band succeeds with on each single gig.

The Paul Deslauriers Band
Irene’s, 885 Bank Street
Saturday, August 18

A virtuoso on both electric and acoustic guitars, Paul Deslauriers is part of Canada’s guitar elite and is considered one of Quebec’s overall best guitarists; but it doesn’t stop there, he’s also a powerful and expressive singer.  Since 1997 he has fronted the Paul Deslauriers Band, and proudly showing his rock colors and his true to the blues roots. With over two decades of experience in the music industry (began his career in his early teens!), seven albums under his belt, and a list of fans that extends into Europe and the US, this guitarist/singer/songwriter/producer has truly mastered his art!
Paul first gained acclaim in the 1990s as a founding member of Black Cat Bone, deemed by many critics at the time to be “one of Canada’s hottest blues-rock bands.”  Today he continues to electrify audiences with his live performances and give workshops at Festivals and concerts on both sides of the Atlantic.

SPRING & SUMMER FESTIVALS
******************************************************
The 2012 Blues Festival Guide magazine 10th anniversary issue has arrived and blues fans are devouring 100 pages packed full of festivals, blues history, lifestyle, radio DJ and blues society listings, and more – the biggest issue yet.

Started in 2003, The Blues Festival Guide magazine was a Media Sponsor of the 2003 government-proclaimed Year of The Blues. In 2006, three years later, “The Guide” received recognition from the Blues Foundation by being a recipient of the coveted Keeping The Blues Alive award for print media. That same year, they also received an award from the West Coast Hall of Fame/Bay Area Blues Society for ‘Best Blues Publication of the Year’.

This year, the artwork that graces the front cover is by Jackson-MS based artist, Tony Davenport. The first half of the magazine is the Festival Section with dozens of blues festivals including their line-ups so blues fans can easily plan their festival season and a comprehensive Plan Your Blues calendar in the back.

The entire magazine can also be read online; find a link hosted on the homepage at http://www.BluesFestivalGuide.com. This Digital Magazine is user-friendly with lots of bells and whistles; turn the page with a click of your mouse.

The print version of the “Guide” is printed on white-bright recycled newsprint with a four-page glossy wrap. The newsprint allows printing 100,000 copies while keeping the cost down for “starving artists” and non-profits to advertise in it. Completely advertising driven, fans and industry professionals can pick up a copy for free through their local blues society, blues festival, club, or music store. Or to have a copy mailed, send $7 ($12 overseas) to RBA Publishing, P.O. Box 50635, Reno, NV 89513 (or send payment via PayPal to payment@BluesFestivalGuide.com). Selections from Canada Live This Week

Starting August 17, Nana Aba Duncan will host a brand new chart show called "The Radio 2 Top 20."

Wednesday, August 8
concert 1: Mavis Staples
, recorded at Koerner Hall in Toronto
Mavis Staples has had a career like few others. She began singing professionally more than 60 years ago with her work with her family band, The Staples Singers, lead by her father Pops Staples. The Staples Singers began singing in churches and for community events, but by the time Mavis was out of high school they had graduated to a hit-producing and national touring act. By the 1960s The Staples Singers were at the forefront of the civil rights movement. Fast forward to 2010, which found Mavis Staples in an unlikely collaboration with fellow Chicago resident Jeff Tweedy (best known as the front man for indie rockers Wilco). Together Jeff and Mavis produced the Grammy-winning album You Are Not Alone. This collaboration led to a new interest in Staples' career and introduced her to a new generation of fans. Canada Live caught up with Mavis Staples at Koerner Hall in Toronto where she performed with a blues trio of bass, drums and guitars, backed by a singing group that included Vicki Randle, Donny Gerrard and Yvonne Staples.

Friday, August 10
concert 1: Big Sugar
, recorded at Vancouver's Commodore Ballroom, October 22nd, 2011
Big Sugar is back! And they're getting back on the Canadian music map in a big way with their first tour since 2003 and a new studio album, Revolution Per Minute. Big Sugar's front man Gordie Johnson and the well-seasoned band were limber and the creative juices were flowing. Mixing reggae, blues, rock, folk, and funk, Big Sugar delivered the goods to the sold out audience. The new tunes are also loose, as groovy as Big Sugar has ever sounded. Gordie and the band were obviously having a good time -- and so was the audience.

Lots of blues available in the concerts on demand section of the CBC Website …
