of our favourite young bands, the 24th Street Wailers have been on a
cross-country tour since June. It took
them to Tacoma WA, up to British Columbia and they’re working their way back

Wakefield at one of the nicest little pubs in the area – Kaffé 1870 – then back to their home base, briefly,
before they’re off to the East Coast.
Their
energy-filled shows are fresh and fun … and this band is going places! See them
now and you’ll be able to tell all your friends you saw them when they still

André & the
J-Tones
D’Arcy McGee’s, 44
Sparks Street
Thursday &
Friday, August 9-10; 9 pm
Formed in 2004, André Bisson the frontman, first had the idea
of forming a rhythm & blues band while attending the Applied Music Program
at Mohawk College in Hamilton, Ontario. It was there he was able to find some
of the best musicians in the city that were all devoted and hard working
professionals, who all shared the love of the music. Andre’s band consists of 5
players including Andre on Vocals/Guitar, as well as a Bassist, Drummer,
Trumpet, and Tenor Saxophone player. This combination of skilled players allows
the band to have tight horn lines as well as a heavy groove in the rhythm
section making everyone in the room sit up and listen.
From André:
Come
out and say hi, get some Rhythm & Blues into your body and perhaps hit the
dance floor! Always looking forward to
our yearly trip to the Ottawa scene! This time we will be there just before we
embark on a UK and Ireland Tour.
Andre Bisson (Vocals/Guitar), Brad Cheeseman (Bass), Matt Burns (Bass), Francis Smith (Tenor Sax), Loretta Hale (Trumpet)

Thorbjørn Risager
Rainbow, 76 Murray
Street
Tuesday & Wednesday,
August 14-15
Danish
singer Thorbjørn Risager, praised for his rough and strong voice by an
unanimous choir of critics from a growing number of countries – 15 the last
time we counted them - is a soft-spoken gentleman off stage. He is the leader
of his seven-piece band mainly for practical reasons – to bring any little
issue into a group discussion can be quite time-consuming. He also composes
most of the band’s music, and during the performance he is the obvious center
of attention, even if the band has a charming way of passing round the task of
introducing the songs between them, so that each musician gets his word in.
And
this is a real smooth organization that has divided all practical tasks such as
web master, CD sales on gigs etc between themselves. Which makes life easier in
the midst of their heavy touring schedule.
In
2003 he started his band, selected musicians he liked both musically and personally,
and the fact that up until today only one of them left and was replaced, at an
early stage of the band’s career, proves that the choice was excellent.
But
of course Thorbjørn’s musical interest started long before this. He played the
saxophone from the age of 12, then guitar – but the singing was more of a
coincidence at first. He was exposed to the blues through a neighbour, a
middle-aged gentleman who was friends with his parents, and who started playing
blues records to the young Thorbjørn. That’s how his life-long love story with
the blues started, with B B King as his biggest hero. Ray Charles is one of his
other obvious influences, but today, with almost 40 recorded songs from his own
pen, he has defined his own sound and style.
His
mixture of genres is something that is sometimes mentioned by critics, who are
looking for more homogeneity. But this is Thorbjørn’s deliberate choice. To
hear a band that plays one shuffle after another, or only jump blues through an
entire CD or concert, might please some critics but there’s definitely a risk
that the audience will get bored. So he
weaves threads of soul, gospel, rock, R&B and funk into his music, to
create a variety and keep the audience interested, something that the band
succeeds with on each single gig.

The Paul Deslauriers
Band
Irene’s, 885 Bank
Street
Saturday, August 18
A
virtuoso on both electric and acoustic guitars, Paul Deslauriers is part of
Canada’s guitar elite and is considered one of Quebec’s overall best
guitarists; but it doesn’t stop there, he’s also a powerful and expressive
singer. Since 1997 he has fronted the Paul Deslauriers Band, and proudly showing his rock
colors and his true to the blues roots. With over two decades of experience in
the music industry (began his career in his early teens!), seven albums under
his belt, and a list of fans that extends into Europe and the US, this
guitarist/singer/songwriter/producer has truly mastered his art!
Paul
first gained acclaim in the 1990s as a founding member of Black Cat Bone, deemed by many critics at the time to be
“one of Canada’s hottest blues-rock bands.” Today he continues to electrify audiences with
his live performances and give workshops at Festivals and concerts on both
sides of the Atlantic.

and its all good! For this Show he is joined by long time friend and excellent

September 9 – Treasa Levasseur with David Baxter

Joni Mitchell, Etta James, Carole King and Dusty Springfield rolled into
one….her voice has great range, it can whisper, cry, soar with joy and blast
you out of your seat - sometimes all in the same song! She's also a first class
songwriter with lyrics that emote, entice and captivate. And she can play -
piano, accordion, guitar, mandolin, percussion, Rhodes
and diamonica. Add in a theatre background and a career as a successful
children's music teacher/entertainer and you have the versatile, eclectic and
very talented package that is Treasa Levasseur." (James Doran, OBScene,
Summer 2006) David Baxter, a very
accomplished Producer and guitarist who has been with Treasa since day one, will

Selections from
Canada Live This Week
7pm Mon to Fri on
Radio Two, except for Friday when it is on One and Two...
Monday, July 30
concert 1: Michael Kaeshammer, recorded at the Vogue Theatre in Vancouver
This concert at Vancouver's Vogue Theatre was the final date on Michael Kaeshammer's Canadian tour supporting his latest studio release simply called Kaeshammer. Michael's earliest musical influence was his father, an amateur pianist who showed Michael how to execute boogie-woogie patterns on the piano. Michael was a diligent student. He developed an enviable technique and has since broadened his musical pursuits into the realms of jazz and pop. Increasingly, Michael is composing his own material. He's also a band leader with a knack for assembling a great, tight outfit for his live shows.
Canada Live podcast, released on Fridays
Friday, August 3 on the Canada Live podcast
The Deep Dark Woods, recorded at The Great Hall in Toronto
Hot on the heels of wildly successful American and European tours, Saskatoon's The Deep Dark Woods returned to Canada with a triumphant sold-out show at Toronto's The Great Hall. This was the biggest Toronto venue The Deep Dark Woods had ever played, and by the time the doors opened that evening a lineup of fans had grown around the block. Old Man Luedecke opened the show to a constant stream of people finding the bar and finding their seats. When The Deep Dark Woods took the stage the crowd was good and warmed up and a party was about to begin. The Deep Dark Woods live show is part country jamboree, part Allman Brothers-style jam band, and guaranteed 100% fun. The Deep Dark Woods were joined on stage for this show by violinist Kendal Carson and Old Man Luedecke, who was welcomed back to the stage like he was an old friend.
