Pro Stand-up Comic, Skip Philipps will entertain and harass the audience between bands.
ALL Proceeds to Canadian Stand-up Comic Legend Mike Allan MacDonald

Brian has organized this benefit because Mike Allan MacDonald has been his friend for forty years. Back in '71 & '72, they toured in a band called Mapleridge and played the NAC together when it was brand new.  Mike lost his liver function after receiving the wrong meds from a doctor while on a comedy tour. He's now back in Ottawa, in desperate need of a liver donor to provide him a chance to live.  Brian hopes that these benefits will do more than raise just money … that they will keep Mike’s plight in the public eye and increase his chances of getting a suitable donor (Type 'O' negative).

Steves' Music Store Ottawa & St. John's Music Store have each contributed two $50 Gift Certificates to be raffled, and at each venue there will be a Door Prize draw for five 11 x 17 inch full colour posters which have been personally autographed by Mike MacDonald.

Anyone who is unable to attend but wishes to help Mike by making a contribution may send a cheque or money order to: Brian McPhillips, 520 Bronson Ave, Apt # 511, Ottawa, Ontario, K1R 7Y9.  Please make cheque or money order out to Mike Allan MacDonald.  And on behalf of Mike, thank you.
For more info, please contact benefit organizer ‘Capital B’ Brian McPhillips on Facebook or by email capitalbblues@hotmail.com

Proving hard work pays off, Ross has been honoured with a nomination for Best New Artist at The Maple Blues Awards in 2010, two Rising Star nominations from CBC, back to back Blues Album of the Year nominations from the East Coast Music Association, a win for Best Blues Recording for “Redemption” at the 2010 MusicNB awards and more recently Ross represented Harvest Jazz and Blues Festival at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis TN.

Ross Neilsen is the real, old school kind of artist.
Write. Tour. Record. Tour. Repeat.
Nearing the end of their cross-Canada and back tour, Ross and his band return to Irene’s on July 6
********************************************************
Bart Walker Band
Rainbow, 76 Murray Street
Friday, July 6 @ 10 pm

Bart Walker’s debut ”Who I Am”, is a portrait of the Nashville-based guitar and vocal powerhouse as a dreamer, a fan, a survivor, a creative dynamo and, most of all, a one-man argument for the continued vitality and emotional heat of the blues.  A born virtuoso who began playing and singing at age four, Walker and his band — which includes ex-Stevie Ray Vaughan keyboardist Reese Wynans — make his original plucked-from-life tunes sound like classics, delivered with the same incendiary energy as the live performances that have won them a growing following in the South and Midwest.

Bart Walker was awarded the prestigious Gibson Guitar Best Blues Guitarist in the 2012 International Blues Challenge.  The band placed 2nd in the overall competition out of 228 competing bands

Danny Brooks
Irene’s, 885 Bank Street
Saturday, July 7 @ 9:30 pm

Danny Brooks has led a remarkable life having been rescued from the depths of despair and drug addiction at one point to joy and faith in the Lord and he isn't afraid to tell you about it. The one constant through it all has been his wonderful music. He is a consummate songwriter, a talented guitarist and harmonica player who possesses a deep, soulful, powerful voice. (Info from Acoustic  Blue Sundays)

Lynn Drury Band
Rainbow, 76 Murray Street
Saturday, July 7 @ 10 pm

Lynn Drury’s compositions are as rich and full of visual imagery as life itself. Often autobiographical, each song is carefully crafted around its initial inspiration, ranging from love and loss to beauty and butterflies. Her sound combines the twang and grit of her native Mississippi and the funky grooves of her adopted home of New Orleans.

New Orleans-based nonprofit Threadhead Records Foundation awarded Drury a grant in February 2010 to help produce her latest album, “Sugar On the Floor,” which represents a mixture of her Mississippi grit / New Orleans groove and grander styles with horns and strings arranged by Matt Perrine. The stellar lineup includes Alex McMurray (Tin Men, Royal Fingerbowl), Tommy Malone (Subdudes), Ivan Neville, Helen Gillet, Bill Malchow, and Eric Traub. Produced by Carlo Nuccio (who also plays drums on the album), much of the disc was recorded and engineered by Jacques DeLatour at Fudge Recording Studios in New Orleans. “Sugar On the Floor” was released in the spring of 2011, and is racking up impressive reviews.

Johnny Sansone with MonkeyJunk
Rainbow, 76 Murray Street
Sunday, July 8 @ 10 pm

This year’s Blues Music Award for Blues Song of the Year went to Johnny Sansone’s ‘The Lord is Waiting and the Devil is Too’ from the CD of the same name.  The lyrics are dark, the harmonica wails and the guitar and drums add a raw edge … powerful and intense.  Johnny has never sounded or played better.  This must-have disc was produced by fellow New Orleans immigrant Anders Osborne, and features a power trio of Johnny on diatonic and chromatic harmonicas and lead vocals, Anders on guitar and backing vocals and Galactic’s Stanton Moore on drums.  When Johnny’s in Ottawa at the Rainbow, he’ll be backed up by Ottawa’s own bass-less trio, MonkeyJunk.  This will be a dynamite show!
********************************************************
Oli Brown Band

Monday & Tuesday, July 9-10 @ 10 pm

Young British blues/rock guitarist Oli Brown won the 'Best Band' category in the 2011 British Blues Awards and his sophomore album, “Heads I Win Tails You Lose”, was named 'Best Album'.  Following a 25 date tour of the UK as the opening act for John Mayall, John asked Oli to step into the lead guitarist shoes of his band when Rocky Athos was unable to attend the Indonesian Blues Festival in December 2011, a great honour.
His third album on Ruf Records, “Here I Am”, was released in April.

His band includes Stephen Dees, one of rock n' roll’s unsung greats, touring and-or recording as bassist and vocalist for Hall and Oates, Todd Rundgren, Pat Travers, and Foghat, to name a few. Moreland & Arbuckle
Rainbow, 76 Murray Street
Saturday, July 14 @ 10 pm

Since their beginnings in the Kansas heartland a decade ago, guitarist Aaron Moreland and vocalist/harpist Dustin Arbuckle have captured the visceral spirit of the early 20th century Delta blues and the raw energy of post-World War II urban blues and distilled it all into a hard-driving and powerful garage-rock configuration of guitar, vocals, harp and drums.
About their latest release, “Just A Dream”, Moreland says, “This is the best record of our careers, and a jump-off point to rope in a lot of new fans that have never heard us before. I think we’re lucky in that we have a unique sound and a unique style that I don’t really hear anywhere else.”

A Dinner & Show Fundraiser Series featuring some of Canada's best Acoustic Blues artists with proceeds going to support local Westport festivals.  All shows – 6-10 pm.  Buffet dinner & show $45; advance reservations required.

July 8 – Danny Brooks
Danny Brooks has led a remarkable life having been rescued from the depths of despair and drug addiction at one point to joy and faith in the Lord and he isn't afraid to tell you about it. The one constant through it all has been his wonderful music. He is a consummate songwriter, a talented guitarist and harmonica player who possesses a deep, soulful, powerful voice.

July 22 – Harrison Kennedy
Harrison Kennedy is a fabulous Canadian singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist (guitar, mandolin, banjo), born and raised in Hamilton ON, a direct descendent of African American slaves who made their way to freedom in Upper Canada through the Underground Railroad in the mid 1800s. They brought their soulful roots music with them and passed it down from generation to generation which, no doubt, explains why he plays and sings the Blues so deeply. Harrison writes and sings what he feels from the heart telling stories about the sorrows and joys that we all face in everyday life through his songs.

August 12 – Paul Reddick with the Weber Brothers
Paul Reddick is one of the best singer/songwriter/harmonica players in Canada.  He has been called "The Poet Of Song" for his emotive, passionate way with words, voice and harp. He will be joined by the very talented Weber Brothers - Sam on guitar and Ryan on stand-up bass. Originally from Maryland they came to Toronto to play in Ronnie Hawkins' band in the early 2000s and stayed.

August 26 – Michael Jerome Browne
Michael Jerome Browne is an extremely accomplished instrumentalist (guitar, banjo, mandolin, violin and more) and singer and, together with his wife Bee, writes beautiful songs.  It's hard to pigeon hole his music - you'll hear elements of folk, roots, gospel, country, soul, R&B, Motown, jazz, rock and bluegrass as well as blues in his repertoire - and its all good! For this Show he is joined by long time friend and excellent percussionist John McColgan.

September 9 – Treasa Levasseur with David Baxter
"Think Joni Mitchell, Etta James, Carole King and Dusty Springfield rolled into one….her voice has great range, it can whisper, cry, soar with joy and blast you out of your seat - sometimes all in the same song! She's also a first class songwriter with lyrics that emote, entice and captivate. And she can play - piano, accordion, guitar, mandolin, percussion, Rhodes and diamonica. Add in a theatre background and a career as a successful children's music teacher/entertainer and you have the versatile, eclectic and very talented package that is Treasa Levasseur." (James Doran, OBScene, Summer 2006)  David Baxter, a very accomplished Producer and guitarist who has been with Treasa since day one, will be accompanying her for this Show.

SPRING & SUMMER FESTIVALS
******************************************************
The 2012 Blues Festival Guide magazine 10th anniversary issue has arrived and blues fans are devouring 100 pages packed full of festivals, blues history, lifestyle, radio DJ and blues society listings, and more – the biggest issue yet.

Started in 2003, The Blues Festival Guide magazine was a Media Sponsor of the 2003 government-proclaimed Year of The Blues. In 2006, three years later, “The Guide” received recognition from the Blues Foundation by being a recipient of the coveted Keeping The Blues Alive award for print media. That same year, they also received an award from the West Coast Hall of Fame/Bay Area Blues Society for ‘Best Blues Publication of the Year’.

This year, the artwork that graces the front cover is by Jackson-MS based artist, Tony Davenport. The first half of the magazine is the Festival Section with dozens of blues festivals including their line-ups so blues fans can easily plan their festival season and a comprehensive Plan Your Blues calendar in the back.

The entire magazine can also be read online; find a link hosted on the homepage at http://www.BluesFestivalGuide.com. This Digital Magazine is user-friendly with lots of bells and whistles; turn the page with a click of your mouse.

The print version of the “Guide” is printed on white-bright recycled newsprint with a four-page glossy wrap. The newsprint allows printing 100,000 copies while keeping the cost down for “starving artists” and non-profits to advertise in it. Completely advertising driven, fans and industry professionals can pick up a copy for free through their local blues society, blues festival, club, or music store. Or to have a copy mailed, send $7 ($12 overseas) to RBA Publishing, P.O. Box 50635, Reno, NV 89513 (or send payment via PayPal to payment@BluesFestivalGuide.com). Host Holger Petersen has been a broadcaster, record producer, album collector, and serious blues fan for over 30 years.  His collection of blues records numbers in the thousands.  On Saturday Night Blues each week you’ll hear a mix of classic blues from the ‘Petersen Vaults’, concerts, interviews, artist features, new releases, plus anything that boogies, jumps, or swings, plus your requests from the Bluesline.
