Ottawa Blues This Week - 21 May 2012

SPECIAL EVENTS THIS WEEK
******************************************************
The 24th Street Wailers
Irene’s Pub, 885 Bank Street
Friday, May 25 @ 9:30 pm

Sponsored by the Toronto Blues Society, this band made a real impression at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis, February 1-4.  Their first performance on Wednesday at Wet Willie’s initiated a buzz that resulted in a full house for their second performance on Thursday; they closed out the First Great Canadian Polar Bear Blues Showcase in fine style on Thursday afternoon; they filled their venue to capacity for their appearance in the semi-finals on Friday night; and they were the only Canadian band asked to participate in the Kings of Beale Street competition on Saturday night.  And they sold a whole lot of CDs.

Their 2011 release "Dirty Little Young’uns" debuted at number three in Canada and number eight overall on the Roots Music Report and was on the DAWG FM Top 20 charts for several months. It was the featured “Blues Breaker of the Week” on Dan Aykroyd’s House of Blues Radio Hour.  "This is just great, gritty, fun, live stuff!"...Dan Aykroyd

Following the success of “Dirty Little Young’uns”, they were in Halifax in early March to record their 2nd CD and on Friday they’ll be at Irene’s for CD release party for their sophomore release, “Unshakeable”.

The young musicians in this band all studied music at college so they know their stuff, but they also know how to entertain and can appeal to the younger demographic that is needed in our blues audience.  The 24th Street Wailers will be delivering their patented incredible high energy and fun blues … this is a ‘DON’T MISS’ show!
******************************************************
Studebaker John
Rainbow, 76 Murray Street
Friday, May 25 @ 10 pm

Studebaker John Grimaldi was born in an Italian-American section of Chicago and started playing harmonica at age 7. Under the spell of music he heard on Maxwell Street, Chicago’s famed blues melting pot, Grimaldi began performing as Studebaker John and the Hawks in the ‘70s. The band name referenced the Studebaker Hawk, a car Grimaldi still owns today, and was also intended as a tribute to his friend, J.B. Hutto and the Hawks. John began playing guitar after a life-changing experience of seeing Hound Dog Taylor and the Houserockers perform. “…Hound Dog started playing, hitting notes that sent chills up and down my spine. He was versatile and powerful and would play rhythm as well as leads. I left there knowing what I wanted to do. I had to play slide guitar.”

As a songwriter and musician, Studebaker John has emerged as a major creative force in the world of the blues today. Ahead of the pack, with vision and foresight, creating a new standard and landscape for this music’s future… with John at the wheel, the future is now!

An Evening of Jazz
With Diane White & Brian Browne
GigSpace Performance Studio, 953 Gladstone Avenue
Friday, May 25 @ 8 pm; tickets $10

An evening of jazz you will thoroughly enjoy at the GigSpace Performance Studio.  Diane White, known for her gorgeous jazz vocals, joins forces with the inimitable Brian Browne on piano. Diane's busy international career has taken her to throughout North America, the Caribbean, Europe, the Middle East, Asia and India, performing for Political Dignitaries, royal families, jazz festivals and exclusive jazz clubs.
Montreal-born pianist Brian Browne has long been regarded as one of the leading proponents of jazz piano in Canada. Browne's distinctive, bluesy piano style swings with traces of Art Tatum, Oscar Peterson, Errol Garner and Bill Evans, yet the sound is unmistakably his own. A Dinner & Show Fundraiser Series featuring some of Canada's best Acoustic Blues artists with proceeds going to support local Westport festivals.  All shows – 6-10 pm.  Buffet dinner & show $45; advance reservations required.

June 24 – Steve Strongman
Steve Strongman is one of the most gifted guitar players and singer/songwriters in Canada today and was just recognized as such with the 2012 Maple Blues Award for Guitar Player Of The Year. He plays electric and acoustic equally well.

July 8 – Danny Brooks
Danny Brooks has led a remarkable life having been rescued from the depths of despair and drug addiction at one point to joy and faith in the Lord and he isn't afraid to tell you about it. The one constant through it all has been his wonderful music. He is a consummate songwriter, a talented guitarist and harmonica player who possesses a deep, soulful, powerful voice.

July 22 – Harrison Kennedy
Harrison Kennedy is a fabulous Canadian singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist (guitar, mandolin, banjo), born and raised in Hamilton ON, a direct descendent of African American slaves who made their way to freedom in Upper Canada through the Underground Railroad in the mid 1800s. They brought their soulful roots music with them and passed it down from generation to generation which, no doubt, explains why he plays and sings the Blues so deeply. Harrison writes and sings what he feels from the heart telling stories about the sorrows and joys that we all face in everyday life through his songs.

August 12 – Paul Reddick with the Weber Brothers
Paul Reddick is one of the best singer/songwriter/harmonica players in Canada.  He has been called "The Poet Of Song" for his emotive, passionate way with words, voice and harp. He will be joined by the very talented Weber Brothers - Sam on guitar and Ryan on stand-up bass. Originally from Maryland they came to Toronto to play in Ronnie Hawkins' band in the early 2000s and stayed.

August 26 – Michael Jerome Browne
Michael Jerome Browne is an extremely accomplished instrumentalist (guitar, banjo, mandolin, violin and more) and singer and, together with his wife Bee, writes beautiful songs.  It's hard to pigeon hole his music - you'll hear elements of folk, roots, gospel, country, soul, R&B, Motown, jazz, rock and bluegrass as well as blues in his repertoire - and its all good! For this Show he is joined by long time friend and excellent percussionist John McColgan.

September 9 – Treasa Levasseur with David Baxter
"Think Joni Mitchell, Etta James, Carole King and Dusty Springfield rolled into one….her voice has great range, it can whisper, cry, soar with joy and blast you out of your seat - sometimes all in the same song! She's also a first class songwriter with lyrics that emote, entice and captivate. And she can play - piano, accordion, guitar, mandolin, percussion, Rhodes and diamonica. Add in a theatre background and a career as a successful children's music teacher/entertainer and you have the versatile, eclectic and very talented package that is Treasa Levasseur." (James Doran, OBScene, Summer 2006)  David Baxter, a very accomplished Producer and guitarist who has been with Treasa since day one, will be accompanying her for this Show.

If you were fortunate to witness 7-time W.C. Backed by the Severn House Band, and displaying grit and just the right amount of tenderness, Tad wrung all the emotion possible out of three numbers including a moving tribute to the late Solomon Burke, (‘I’m Leavin’’ from Burke’s last release “Nothing’s Impossible”), and heart-stopping rendition of the BMA nominated ‘Rained All Night’ (Song of the Year).

If you missed his performance at the Blues Music Awards, you can make up for it – Tad Robinson will be at the Rainbow on Friday, June 1, on his way to headline the Waterfront Blues Festival in Toronto the following day.  This is a ‘DON’T MISS’ show!

George Thorogood & the Destroyers
            Gordie Johnson opening
CE Centre, 4899 Uplands Drive
Sunday, June 3; tickets $48

While many bands change sounds as the music scene evolves, George Thorogood & the Destroyers stay the course. They know who they are, and they’re out to tell the world about it. Faithful to their blues roots, they’ve continued to play the rough and ready sounds that draw from the influences of John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters and Howlin Wolf.
Gordie Johnson is joining the bill and will combine blues and gospel with dub for an electric set of boot-stomping tunes. Johnson's extraordinary guitar stylings are the driving force behind Big Sugar and Grady, two bands with a large following in North America. This will be an excellent introduction to another side of the man and his music.
