SPECIAL EVENTS THIS WEEK
******************************************************
Tad Robinson
Rainbow, 76 Murray Street
Friday, June 1 @ 10 pm

If you were fortunate to witness 7-time W.C. Handy/Blues Music Award nominee Tad Robinson’s performance at the 2011 Blues Music Awards, you’d understand why Tad stands shoulder to shoulder with the best Soul / Blues vocalists on the planet. Backed by the Severn House Band, and displaying grit and just the right amount of tenderness, Tad wrung all the emotion possible out of three numbers including a moving tribute to the late Solomon Burke, (‘I’m Leavin’’ from Burke’s last release “Nothing’s Impossible”), and heart-stopping rendition of the BMA nominated ‘Rained All Night’ (Song of the Year).

If you missed his performance at the Blues Music Awards, you can make up for it – Tad Robinson will be at the Rainbow on Friday, June 1, on his way to headline the Waterfront Blues Festival in Toronto the following day.  This is a ‘DON’T MISS’ show!
For more information please visit Tad’s website, http://www.tadrobinson.com.

George Thorogood & the Destroyers
            Gordie Johnson opening
CE Centre, 4899 Uplands Drive
Sunday, June 3; tickets $48

While many bands change sounds as the music scene evolves, George Thorogood & the Destroyers stay the course. They know who they are, and they’re out to tell the world about it. Faithful to their blues roots, they’ve continued to play the rough and ready sounds that draw from the influences of John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters and Howlin Wolf.
Gordie Johnson is joining the bill and will combine blues and gospel with dub for an electric set of boot-stomping tunes. Johnson's extraordinary guitar stylings are the driving force behind Big Sugar and Grady, two bands with a large following in North America. This will be an excellent introduction to another side of the man and his music.
Tickets are available at www.capitaltickets.ca

A major part of the Ottawa music scene for many years, musician, composer and producer Victor Nesrallah has been active as a performing songwriter, appearing at festivals, concert stages and club venues throughout eastern Canada. An award winning songwriter, his compositions have been acclaimed as “finely tuned songs”, praised for their originality and hard-hitting message. A multi-instrumentalist with a fluid and resonant vocal style, Victor draws from the roots to inspire his engaging and energy packed live performances.

AREA HIGHLIGHTS THIS WEEK
******************************************************
The 15th edition of Virée Blues Boréale presents
Pat TheWhite
Le Petit Chicago, 50 Promenade du Portage (in the Old Hull sector)
Wednesday, May 30 @ 8 pm

The Virée Blues Boréale team has been working to bring our next guest back to our stage. He left the music scene for a few years to get back to his native Gaspésie and make his home there with his new family; this new father of two is coming back strong.  Before appearing at the 8th “Guitars of the World Festival” in Abitibi-Temiscamingue, he will stop here for his Outaouais fans.

A keen guitarist, Pat TheWhite has travelled the world of the Blues since the beginning of his professional career in 1998. Born in Carleton, in Quebec’s Gaspésie region, Patrick Leblanc moved up fast to the major leagues of the Blues in Quebec.  For his eponymous CD in 2004, he enlisted the contributions of Nanette Workman to sing, Guy Belanger on harmonica and Jody Golick of the Stephen Barry Band on sax. His second CD, “Reviver” was critically acclaimed right from its release in 2006, and delighted his fans from America, Europe and Japan.   After hundreds of sold out shows, festivals and television appearances (such as Tele-Quebec’s “Belle&Bum”), Pat TheWhite has earned a large and loyal fan base that is growing weekly. No wonder he won Awards for Male Artist of the Year in 2003 and Best Performance in 2004 at the Lys Blues Gala in Quebec and was nominated for the Best New Artist at the 2005 Maple Blues Awards.

Renowned for his boisterous musical performances and his powerful voice, Pat TheWhite will be accompanied by his regular pals: Vincent Carre on drums and Marc-Andre Landry on bass.  Immersed in the rhythms of the ‘70s when wild guitar playing prevailed, the group evolved from the Blues-Swing of its beginnings to Southern Rock then to Blues-Rock but never away from its deep Blues Roots.  The group travelled twice to Mississippi specifically to work with some of the most influential Blues players of the Delta. Released in 2010, their last album "Strange Fascination" unfortunately did not have all the success it deserved, given that the group had to pause temporarily to allow their leader to settle into his new family life; but they have come back stronger in 2012 with some new material and, as always, powerful and spectacular guitar solos by Pat TheWhite.

Brian has organized this benefit because Mike Allan MacDonald has been his friend for forty years. Back in '71 & '72, they toured in a band called Mapleridge and played the NAC together when it was brand new.  Mike lost his liver function after receiving the wrong meds from a doctor while on a comedy tour. He's now back in Ottawa, in desperate need of a liver donor to provide him a chance to live.  Brian hopes that these benefits will do more than raise just money … that they will keep Mike’s plight in the public eye and increase his chances of getting a suitable donor (Type 'O' negative).

Steves' Music Store Ottawa & St. John's Music Store have each contributed two $50 Gift Certificates to be raffled, and at each venue there will be a Door Prize draw for five 11 x 17 inch full colour posters which have been personally autographed by Mike MacDonald.

Anyone who is unable to attend but wishes to help Mike by making a contribution may send a cheque or money order to: Brian McPhillips, 520 Bronson Ave, Apt # 511, Ottawa, Ontario, K1R 7Y9.  Please make cheque or money order out to Mike Allan MacDonald.  And on behalf of Mike, thank you.

June 24 – Steve Strongman
Steve Strongman is one of the most gifted guitar players and singer/songwriters in Canada today and was just recognized as such with the 2012 Maple Blues Award for Guitar Player Of The Year. He plays electric and acoustic equally well.

July 8 – Danny Brooks
Danny Brooks has led a remarkable life having been rescued from the depths of despair and drug addiction at one point to joy and faith in the Lord and he isn't afraid to tell you about it. The one constant through it all has been his wonderful music. He is a consummate songwriter, a talented guitarist and harmonica player who possesses a deep, soulful, powerful voice.

July 22 – Harrison Kennedy
Harrison Kennedy is a fabulous Canadian singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist (guitar, mandolin, banjo), born and raised in Hamilton ON, a direct descendent of African American slaves who made their way to freedom in Upper Canada through the Underground Railroad in the mid 1800s. They brought their soulful roots music with them and passed it down from generation to generation which, no doubt, explains why he plays and sings the Blues so deeply. Harrison writes and sings what he feels from the heart telling stories about the sorrows and joys that we all face in everyday life through his songs.

August 12 – Paul Reddick with the Weber Brothers
Paul Reddick is one of the best singer/songwriter/harmonica players in Canada.  He has been called "The Poet Of Song" for his emotive, passionate way with words, voice and harp. He will be joined by the very talented Weber Brothers - Sam on guitar and Ryan on stand-up bass. Originally from Maryland they came to Toronto to play in Ronnie Hawkins' band in the early 2000s and stayed.

August 26 – Michael Jerome Browne
Michael Jerome Browne is an extremely accomplished instrumentalist (guitar, banjo, mandolin, violin and more) and singer and, together with his wife Bee, writes beautiful songs.  It's hard to pigeon hole his music - you'll hear elements of folk, roots, gospel, country, soul, R&B, Motown, jazz, rock and bluegrass as well as blues in his repertoire - and its all good! For this Show he is joined by long time friend and excellent percussionist John McColgan.

September 9 – Treasa Levasseur with David Baxter
"Think Joni Mitchell, Etta James, Carole King and Dusty Springfield rolled into one….her voice has great range, it can whisper, cry, soar with joy and blast you out of your seat - sometimes all in the same song! She's also a first class songwriter with lyrics that emote, entice and captivate. And she can play - piano, accordion, guitar, mandolin, percussion, Rhodes and diamonica. Add in a theatre background and a career as a successful children's music teacher/entertainer and you have the versatile, eclectic and very talented package that is Treasa Levasseur." (James Doran, OBScene, Summer 2006)  David Baxter, a very accomplished Producer and guitarist who has been with Treasa since day one, will be accompanying her for this Show.
