Using performers like Nat “King” Cole, Frank Sinatra and Joao Gilberto and the songs of composers from Richard Rodgers, George Gershwin to James Taylor, Antonio Carlos Jobim and Lennon & McCartney as touchstones, John Pizzarelli has established himself as one of the prime interpreters of The Great American songbook and beyond, bringing to his work the cool jazz flavour of his brilliant guitar playing and singing. His latest recording, “Rockin’ In Rhythm”, the singer-guitarist’s first ever Duke Ellington recording, features 12 classic tracks that prove Pizzarelli – like Ellington – knows how to show off the strengths of the musicians in his band. In addition to a cut for solo guitar, four songs highlight the quartet (with pianist Larry Fuller, bassist Martin Pizzarelli and drummer Tony Tedesco) and seven include the Swing Seven horns with arrangements by Don Sebesky.
The legendary guitarist/vocalist is no stranger to Ottawa (he was last here at the 2006 Ottawa Jazz Festival), but he has never before appeared in such an intimate environment.

Toronto harmonica player/singer/songwriter and performer extraordinaire David Rotundo is a multiple Maple Blues Award winner/nominee (Harmonica Player, Electric Act and New Artist of the Year categories). He's also one of the most popular acts ever to play BOTR @ The Cove. This is his 4th visit and he has sold out every time. He never fails to deliver a great, high energy show.
He is joined by Juno Award and multiple Maple Blues Award winner Julian Fauth on keyboards and vocals (Julian is an accomplished songwriter as well). Watch for a new album by these two together out soon on Electro-Fi Records.

What a troika! These three are old friends whose playing/jamming days go back to Toronto's Kensington Market in the late ‘90s and it definitely shows when they get together. For those of you who don’t know Ross Neilsen … he’s been called Canada’s hardest working blues rock act. Taking strong, timeless material to the place that matters. The People. 1st Annual Ottawa Grassroots Mini-Folk Festival

The OGF festival will be an annual family-oriented celebration of folk music, dance and other participatory arts. The 1st Annual OGF has announced the following headliners and programming for its community-oriented celebration of music and dance: Rick Fines, Katherine Wheatley, Missy Burgess and many more.
The one-day festival will consist of a number of different components which will take place in various parts of the building. In the afternoon, the downstairs area will offer a diverse range of participatory activities, including a ukulele sing-along, contra dancing, yoga and a "playback" theatre performance.
At the same time, the hall upstairs will feature several respected and talented performers, including the wonderful singer-songwriter Ana Miura, along with Open Stage performance opportunities for children as well as adults. The Open Stage is a Spirit of Rasputin’s (SoR) presentation. All afternoon activities are FREE, with donations accepted for CKCU FM, Ottawa's long-running community radio station.
The evening concert will feature Ottawa's own Missy Burgess as the opener, celebrating her latest CD, "Play Me Sweet" followed by the award-winning, ever-popular singer-songwriters Rick Fines and
Katherine Wheatley.

Sponsored by the Toronto Blues Society, this band made a real impression at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis, February 1-4. Their first performance on Wednesday at Wet Willie’s initiated a buzz that resulted in a full house for their second performance on Thursday; they closed out the First Great Canadian Polar Bear Blues Showcase in fine style on Thursday afternoon; they filled their venue to capacity for their appearance in the semi-finals on Friday night; and they were the only Canadian band asked to participate in the Kings of Beale Street competition on Saturday night. And they sold a whole lot of CDs.
Their 2011 release "Dirty Little Young’uns" debuted at number three in Canada and number eight overall on the Roots Music Report and was on the DAWG FM Top 20 charts for several months. It was the

Studebaker John Grimaldi was born in an Italian-American section of Chicago and started playing harmonica at age 7. Under the spell of music he heard on Maxwell Street, Chicago’s famed blues melting pot, Grimaldi began performing as Studebaker John and the Hawks in the ‘70s. The band name referenced the Studebaker Hawk, a car Grimaldi still owns today, and was also intended as a tribute to his friend, J.B. Hutto and the Hawks. John began playing guitar after a life-changing experience of seeing Hound Dog Taylor and the Houserockers perform. “…Hound Dog started playing, hitting notes that sent chills up and down my spine. He was versatile and powerful and would play rhythm as well as leads. I left there knowing what I wanted to do. I had to play slide guitar.”

Doug Paisley's latest album, “Constant Companion”, has been burning slow but steady since it was released in late 2010, and major critical publications have been taking notice. Mojo, Rolling Stone and Pitchfork are all in admiration of the strength in Doug's songwriting, citing comparisons to the likes of Wil Oldham and Townes Van Zandt. So now, Doug's stepping up his game. After years of playing (mostly for free) in tiny venues around Toronto, he has recently signed on with No Quarter Records out of Philadelphia and that union finds him on playing bigger and better stages across Canada and in the US Midwest. This concert at Glenn Gould Studio in Toronto marked his largest paying audience to date.
concert 2: Frazey Ford, recorded at Le Petit Campus in Montreal
The sixties were a time of rebellion and creative freedom for a lot of baby boomers, and it seems to have rubbed off on their children. Along with R&B singers Otis Redding, Ann Peebles, and Roberta Flack, Frazey Ford cites her free-spirited parents (her father was an American draft dodger) as key influences in shaping her music. Simple songwriting and convincing vocals were honed for 10 years as a member of the Be Good Tanyas. Now Frazey has ventured on the solo stage. Her debut CD, Obadiah, was released to much acclaim and forms the set list for tonight's concert at Le Petit Campus in Montreal. Be Good Tanya alumnus Trish Klein provides solid support on the mandolin and vocals.
