SPECIAL EVENTS THIS WEEK

******************************************************

John Pizzarelli

Centrepointe Theatre, 101 Centrepointe Drive

Thursday April 19 @ 8 pm; tickets $59.50

Using performers like Nat “King” Cole, Frank Sinatra and Joao Gilberto and the songs of composers from Richard Rodgers, George Gershwin to James Taylor, Antonio Carlos Jobim and Lennon & McCartney as touchstones, John Pizzarelli has established himself as one of the prime interpreters of The Great American songbook and beyond, bringing to his work the cool jazz flavour of his brilliant guitar playing and singing. His latest recording, “Rockin’ In Rhythm”, the singer-guitarist’s first ever Duke Ellington recording, features 12 classic tracks that prove Pizzarelli – like Ellington – knows how to show off the strengths of the musicians in his band. In addition to a cut for solo guitar, four songs highlight the quartet (with pianist Larry Fuller, bassist Martin Pizzarelli and drummer Tony Tedesco) and seven include the Swing Seven horns with arrangements by Don Sebesky.

The legendary guitarist/vocalist is no stranger to Ottawa (he was last here at the 2006 Ottawa Jazz Festival), but he has never before appeared in such an intimate environment.

Ross Neilsen

Irene’s Pub, 885 Bank Street

Friday, April 27 @ 9:30 pm; cover $10

Ross Neilsen and his new band will be playing at Irene’s on Friday, April 27. If you haven’t already seen this on Facebook, you need to check out his YOUTUBE series ‘The Great Bass Player Search’. To date, two episodes have been released … spoiler – Ross is really quite enamoured with Lips as of the end of Part Two. You’ll want to follow this on Ross’ website at http://www.rossneilsen.com to get a heads-up on who’ll be playing bass in the band Ross is bringing to Irene’s.

For those of you who don’t know Ross Neilsen … he’s been called Canada’s hardest working blues rock act. Taking strong, timeless material to the place that matters. The People. As of 2010, his totals stood at six years, over 1000 shows and half a million kilometers traveled. In a time of corporate cookie cutter music this is the return to real. Ross Neilsen is the real, old school kind of artist. Write. Tour. Record. Tour. Repeat.

He fronts his band, but also has a solo act and represented the Harvest Jazz & Blues Festival in the Solo/Duo category at the International Blues Challenge in February, putting on two great performances and advancing to the semi-final round. Then he headed to the Shack Up Inn in Clarksdale, Mississippi, where he recorded his upcoming solo CD, scheduled for release in the fall.

Whether telling tall tales or capturing the spirit of the blues through his own originals and unique covers in his intimate solo shows or combining clever lyrics with old school, in-your-face guitar playing with his band, Ross Neilsen will take you on an emotional journey through the joys and pains of life, death, triumph and defeat. Neilsen will touch your heart, soul, body and mind, sending you home to sing yourself to sleep. And in the morning? You will want more, much more.

The 24th Street Wailers

Irene’s Pub, 885 Bank Street

Friday, May 25 @ 9:30 pm

Sponsored by the Toronto Blues Society, this band made a real impression at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis, February 1-4. Their first performance on Wednesday at Wet Willie’s initiated a buzz that resulted in a full house for their second performance on Thursday; they closed out the First Great Canadian Polar Bear Blues Showcase in fine style on Thursday afternoon; they filled their venue to capacity for their appearance in the semi-finals on Friday night; and they were the only Canadian band asked to participate in the Kings of Beale Street competition on Saturday night. And they sold a whole lot of CDs.

Their 2011 release "Dirty Little Young’uns" debuted at number three in Canada and number eight overall on the Roots Music Report and was on the DAWG FM Top 20 charts for several months. It was the

featured “Blues Breaker of the Week” on Dan Aykroyd’s House of Blues Radio Hour. "This is just great, gritty, fun, live stuff!"...Dan Aykroyd

Following the success of “Dirty Little Young’uns”, they were in Halifax in early March to record their 2nd CD and on May 27 they’ll be at Irene’s for CD release party for their sophomore release, “Unshakeable”.

Check out this video for more on the new CD … http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i7FAGQGzs5Y&feature=plcp&context=C43ea970VDvjVQa1PpcFPgQXdqhhUVj01_Jz

The young musicians in this band all studied music at college so they know their stuff, but they also know how to entertain and can appeal to the younger demographic that is needed in our blues audience. The 24th Street Wailers will be delivering their patented incredible high energy and fun blues … this is a ‘DON’T MISS’ show!

Studebaker John

Rainbow, 76 Murray Street

Friday, May 25 @ 10 pm

Studebaker John Grimaldi was born in an Italian-American section of Chicago and started playing harmonica at age 7. Under the spell of music he heard on Maxwell Street, Chicago’s famed blues melting pot, Grimaldi began performing as Studebaker John and the Hawks in the ‘70s. The band name referenced the Studebaker Hawk, a car Grimaldi still owns today, and was also intended as a tribute to his friend, J.B. Hutto and the Hawks. John began playing guitar after a life-changing experience of seeing Hound Dog Taylor and the Houserockers perform. “…Hound Dog started playing, hitting notes that sent chills up and down my spine. He was versatile and powerful and would play rhythm as well as leads. I left there knowing what I wanted to do. I had to play slide guitar.”

As a songwriter and musician, Studebaker John has emerged as a major creative force in the world of the blues today. Ahead of the pack, with vision and foresight, creating a new standard and landscape for this music’s future… with John at the wheel, the future is now!

If you missed his performance at the Blues Music Awards, you can make up for it – Tad Robinson will be at the Rainbow on Friday, June 1, on his way to headline the Waterfront Blues Festival in Toronto the following day. This is a ‘DON’T MISS’ show!

George Thorogood & the Destroyers

Gordie Johnson opening

CE Centre, 4899 Uplands Drive

Sunday, June 3; tickets $48

While many bands change sounds as the music scene evolves, George Thorogood & the Destroyers stay the course. They know who they are, and they’re out to tell the world about it. Faithful to their blues roots, they’ve continued to play the rough and ready sounds that draw from the influences of John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters and Howlin Wolf.

http://www.georgethorogood.com/

Gordie Johnson is joining the bill and will combine blues and gospel with dub for an electric set of boot-stomping tunes. Johnson's extraordinary guitar stylings are the driving force behind Big Sugar and Grady, two bands with a large following in North America. This will be an excellent introduction to another side of the man and his music.

CBC RADIO CONCERTS ON DEMAND

*******************************************************

Canada Live, Radio Two, Monday to Friday, 7pm

Monday, April 16
concert 1: Doug Paisley
, recorded at Glenn Gould Studio in Toronto
Doug Paisley's latest album, “Constant Companion”, has been burning slow but steady since it was released in late 2010, and major critical publications have been taking notice. Mojo, Rolling Stone and Pitchfork are all in admiration of the strength in Doug's songwriting, citing comparisons to the likes of Wil Oldham and Townes Van Zandt. So now, Doug's stepping up his game. After years of playing (mostly for free) in tiny venues around Toronto, he has recently signed on with No Quarter Records out of Philadelphia and that union finds him on playing bigger and better stages across Canada and in the US Midwest. This concert at Glenn Gould Studio in Toronto marked his largest paying audience to date.

concert 2: Frazey Ford, recorded at Le Petit Campus in Montreal
The sixties were a time of rebellion and creative freedom for a lot of baby boomers, and it seems to have rubbed off on their children. Along with R&B singers Otis Redding, Ann Peebles, and Roberta Flack, Frazey Ford cites her free-spirited parents (her father was an American draft dodger) as key influences in shaping her music. Simple songwriting and convincing vocals were honed for 10 years as a member of the Be Good Tanyas. Now Frazey has ventured on the solo stage. Her debut CD, Obadiah, was released to much acclaim and forms the set list for tonight's concert at Le Petit Campus in Montreal. Be Good Tanya alumnus Trish Klein provides solid support on the mandolin and vocals.

Tuesday, April 17
concert 1: Colin James,
recorded at the Studio in Hamilton Place, Hamilton, ON
Tonight on Canada Live, an acoustic performance by Colin James that was recorded in the intimate setting of the Studio in Hamilton Place. As well as some of his hit songs, you'll hear Colin perform some classic blues tunes. Special guest Tom Wilson (from Blackie and the Rodeo Kings) joins Colin on stage for a couple of songs.

Thanks to Derek Andrews for posting Canada Live listings every week. Derek says, “Enjoy it while we still have a Radio Two and this show. With $115 million cut from the CBC budget, some things will surely be changed....”
