A Night of Blues

with Tim Bastmeyer, Julian Fauth, James Thomson, and Corey Richardson

Rainbow, 76 Murray Street

Friday, March 9

Canadian blues singer/songwriter Tim Bastmeyer started his musical career in 1986 and over the years has played and recorded with a number of different recording artists and has performed throughout North America, as well as the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Scotland and England. He is also a producer, engineer, and music teacher and has produced award-winning recordings and engineered countless recording projects (music and foley). Tim has taught hundreds of young musicians to play guitar, bass and drums.

Bastmeyer will head out on a tour of Canada and several U.S dates in 2012 to support his new self-titled release. Featuring Juno award winning blues artist Julian Fauth on piano, James Thomson on bass and Corey Richardson on drums, this release is much different than Bastmeyer's 2010 recording, a solo acoustic blues recording titled “Graveyard”. “Tim Bastmeyer” contains 11 tracks, featuring 10 originals and a cover of the blues classic 'I'm Going Down' and is a mix of blues ballads and hard blues with a rock edge.

A Night of Blues stops off at the Rainbow on Friday, March 9.

Sponsored by the Toronto Blues Society, this band made a real impression at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis, February 1-4. Their first performance on Wednesday at Wet Willie’s initiated a buzz that resulted in a full house for their second performance on Thursday; they closed out the First Great Canadian Polar Bear Blues Showcase in fine style on Thursday afternoon; they filled their venue to capacity for their appearance in the semi-finals on Friday night; and they were the only Canadian band asked to participate in the Kings of Beale Street competition on Saturday night. And they sold a whole lot of CDs.

Following the success of “Dirty Little Young’uns”, they’re heading off to Halifax to record their 2nd CD in March (more about that below) and will be swinging through our area on their way home from the recording session. So they’ll have new tunes to share, not to mention the incredible high energy of these four extremely talented young musicians. This is a ‘don’t miss’ show!

JW-Jones CD Release Party

Rainbow, 76 Murray Street

Friday, March 30 @ 10 pm

On his 7th release, aptly titled “Seventh Hour”, Jones has teamed up with multi-Juno award winning artist/producer, Steve Dawson, to mix the album. After performing in 17 countries, 4 continents, and releasing 6 critically acclaimed discs, it's time for a change. No famous guests. No fancy studios. This is JW-Jones and his band doing what they do best – right at home, recorded in J-Dub’s living room. Tracked on a crisp fall weekend, this cool release is sure to stir up some discussion about where his music is going as he soars in a vibrant new direction. Shattering visual boundaries is also an integral part of this project. Mitch Lenet, 3D artist and commercial photographer, has developed a concept for this package with cutting-edge technology that is guaranteed to turn heads in the music and fashion world. While keeping one foot firmly planted in the roots he came from, this Maple Blues Award winner believes that appealing to a younger audience is the most important way to ensure the evolution of blues-based music.

Check it out at the CD release, Friday, March 30 at the Rainbow.

John Pizzarelli

Centrepointe Theatre, 101 Centrepointe Drive

Thursday April 19 @ 8 pm; tickets $59.50

Using performers like Nat “King” Cole, Frank Sinatra and Joao Gilberto and the songs of composers from Richard Rodgers, George Gershwin to James Taylor, Antonio Carlos Jobim and Lennon & McCartney as touchstones, John Pizzarelli has established himself as one of the prime interpreters of The Great American songbook and beyond, bringing to his work the cool jazz flavour of his brilliant guitar playing and singing. His latest recording, “Rockin’ In Rhythm”, the singer-guitarist’s first ever Duke Ellington recording, features 12 classic tracks that prove Pizzarelli – like Ellington – knows how to show off the strengths of the musicians in his band. In addition to a cut for solo guitar, four songs highlight the quartet (with pianist Larry Fuller, bassist Martin Pizzarelli and drummer Tony Tedesco) and seven include the Swing Seven horns with arrangements by Don Sebesky.

The legendary guitarist/vocalist is no stranger to Ottawa (he was last here at the 2006 Ottawa Jazz Festival), but he has never before appeared in such an intimate environment.

Solo show from one of the best new talents on the continent. Be there early – this show will sell out – read on to see why this show will sell out.

Canada’s hardest working blues rock act, Ross Neilsen, does it right. Taking strong, timeless material to the place that matters. The People. Six years, over 1000 shows and half a million kilometres traveled. In a time of corporate cookie cutter music this is the return to real. Proving hard work pays off, Ross Neilsen has been honoured with a nomination for Best New Artist at The Maple Blues Awards in 2010, two Rising Star nominations from CBC, back to back Blues Album of the Year nominations from the East Coast Music Association, a win for Best Blues Recording for “Redemption” at the 2010 MusicNB awards and more recently Ross was selected to represent Harvest Jazz and Blues Festival at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis TN, where he advanced to the semi-finals. Ross Neilsen is the real, old school kind of artist. Write. Tour. Record. Tour. Repeat.

CBC RADIO CONCERTS ON DEMAND

*******************************************************

Canada Live … 7pm across the nation (except the radio one afternoon slot)

Monday, March 5
concert 1: The Chet Baker Songbook
, recorded at CBC Vancouver Studio 1
Chet Baker is one of the legends of jazz, with his vulnerable and affecting voice, and subtle trumpet playing. Mike Allen leads an ensemble of fine jazz musicians who love Chet Baker's music. Adam Thomas sings with an uncanny feel for Baker's voice, while Brad Turner resonates in a beautiful way with Baker's trumpet sound. If you love the music of Chet Baker this tribute concert will make you smile; if you don't know Baker's music, this is a wonderful opportunity to discover something truly special.

Tuesday, March 6
concert 1: Ollabelle
, recorded at The West End Cultural Centre in Winnipeg, MB
Ollabelle is a New York-based band that celebrates American roots music. It started out as a side project for the musicians, but became a bona fide group named in honour of country singer and songwriter Ola Belle Reed. The repertoire is a mix of traditional songs along with originals, which have a timeless sound to them. Singer Amy Helm comes to the music honestly. Her father is Levon Helm of the Band and the rest of Ollabelle includes singing instrumentalists. This concert was recorded as part of the 2011 TD Winnipeg International Jazz Festival.

Wednesday, March 7
concert 1: Bruce Cockburn
, recorded at the Eric Harvey Theatre at the Banff Centre in Banff, AB
Bruce Cockburn's most recent release, Small Source of Comfort, is number 31 for him. And on the subject of numbers, Bruce Cockburn is the recipient of 13 Juno awards, the Order of Canada, a Governor General's Performing Arts award, and 7 honorary doctorates. 2012 brings him yet another nomination; he's up for a Juno award in the Roots and Traditional Album of the Year: Solo category. We recorded him in Banff on tour with two of his collaborators from the new album: violinist Jenny Scheinman and percussionist Gary Craig. They add a fresh sound to some of Bruce Cockburn's most enduring hits.

Thursday, March 8 - Canada Live celebrates International Women's Day
concert 1: Angélique Kidjo
, recorded as part of the Edmonton Folk Music Festival
Angélique Kidjo grew up in a village in Benin, the small west African country. She began singing at six years old, but as a teenager, she became subjected to the deep-seated belief in her country that singers were n'er do wells, drug addicts, and prostitutes. Undaunted, Kidjo continued to perform, and when the then-communist government of Benin insisted her songs contain pro-party rhetoric, she knew it was time to leave. Many of her songs are at the very least humanist if not political. In 2006 she created a foundation to improve access to education for African girls, called the Batonga Foundation. She is a UN goodwill Ambassador, supports groups such as Oxfam and UNICEF, and has contributed to the Stephen Lewis foundation, which assists AIDS and HIV-related grassroots projects in Africa. For 2011 International Women's Day, Britain's 'The Guardian' newspaper cited Angélique Kidjo as one of the Top 100 Inspiring Women in the World.

concert 2: Oumou Sangaré, recorded at the Festival Nuits d'Afrique in Montreal
One of Africa's most vocal advocates for the rights of women can also boast of having a fairytale rags-to-riches story. Singer and songwriter Oumou Sangaré was born into a poor and destitute family in Bamako, Mali. She was forced to work as a young child, but her life was changed when she entered a singing competition at age 14 as a dare from her friends. Today, she is one of the world's most recognizable performers and a spokesperson for many charitable organizations. For the last 20 years, she has become a recognized major force in African feminism; her lyrics often tackle women's issues, such as marriage, motherhood, and the challenges of living in a patriarchal society. In this performance at last summer's Festival Nuits d'Afrique in Montreal, Sangaré and her band of Malian performers show why she is revered as the 'Songbird of Wassoulou'.

CBC Radio 1 broadcast, Fridays at 2:05 PM
Friday, March 9 on CBC Radio 1
