JW-Jones CD Release Party

Rainbow, 76 Murray Street

Friday, March 30 @ 10 pm

On his 7th release, aptly titled “Seventh Hour”, Jones has teamed up with multi-Juno award winning artist/producer, Steve Dawson, to mix the album. After performing in 17 countries, 4 continents, and releasing 6 critically acclaimed discs, it's time for a change. No famous guests. No fancy studios. This is JW-Jones and his band doing what they do best – right at home, recorded in J-Dub’s living room. Tracked on a crisp fall weekend, this cool release is sure to stir up some discussion about where his music is going as he soars in a vibrant new direction. Shattering visual boundaries is also an integral part of this project. Mitch Lenet, 3D artist and commercial photographer, has developed a concept for this package with cutting-edge technology that is guaranteed to turn heads in the music and fashion world. While keeping one foot firmly planted in the roots he came from, this Maple Blues Award winner believes that appealing to a younger audience is the most important way to ensure the evolution of blues-based music.

Check it out at the CD release, Friday, March 30 at the Rainbow.

Because Eugene books bands that are “Heard Before The Herd”.
Before the Junos.

Before the Grammys.

If you were wondering why Zaphod’s is not part of this year’s JunoFest, the answer is simple: Zaphod’s has booked some of the best bands to play during this time. Bands that ought to be seen and heard. We’re the incubators of many of the bands and artists that have gone on to win awards and “Eug-Knows Fest” is a curation of some of the best touring bands that we’d like to present to Ottawans and the music industry professionals that will be visiting during the Junos. We’ve got a stellar lineup representing Canada and the World. “Heard Before The Herd”. It’s that simple.

Riot & the Blues Devils

CD Release “No One To Blame But Me”

Le Petit Chicago, 50 Promenade du Portage (Old Hull sector)

Wednesday, March 28 @ 8 pm

Before Rock and Roll there was Blues, the core of Riot and the Blues Devils. It all starts with the Blues, add some Rockabilly attitude, and Riot and the Blues Devils will grab your attention in all of their recordings and live performances. They like to call it their special blend of Blues-a-billy!

Riot and the Blues Devils is a three piece combo of experienced musicians: Riot on lead vocals and guitars, Big Papa Mike on bass and vocals, and Mark DiClaudio on drums and vocals. They have made quite an impression over the past decade either when performing in major festivals or while playing hundreds of shows in different venues. They’ll be hosting a CD release party for their new release “No One To Blame But Me”, at Le Petit Chicago, as part of the Virée Blues Boréale series.

An Evening With Janis Joplin

Almonte Old Town Hall, Almonte ON

Saturday, March 31 @ 7:30 pm; tickets $25 (advance) & $30 at the door

On February 25, we launched our exciting new retrospective show, 'An Evening with Janis Joplin'. This show is produced by Joplinesque and Lyle Dillabough as a fundraiser for the Lanark Animal Welfare Society (LAWS) and has received rave reviews from everyone who was in attendance! On Saturday, March 31st we will be performing the show again this time in Almonte at the Old Town Hall - a terrific historic venue. Guests can expect some additions to the repertoire since the first performance as well as a lower ticket price and no meal this time around.

A little bit about the show...

Most people know who Janis is, and many are familiar with her most popular tunes like ‘Piece of My Heart’, ‘Try’, ‘Cry Baby’, ‘Tell Mama’ (did you see her performance of this one on the Festival Express movie? spectacular!), ‘Me and Bobby McGee’, ‘Mercedez Benz’... But not too many people know how she became the person and the singer that she was.

Did you know that Janis grew up in Port Arthur, Texas just a short drive away from Louisiana? That her first musical loves were Leadbelly, Odetta and Bessie Smith? Or that she frequently visited gospel gatherings just to get in on the music?

Janis had a burning desire to emulate the blues and gospel greats, she also had a solid foundation in folk music - Janis' first ensemble performance was with the Waller Creek Boys in Austin, Texas during the time she was attending the university – ‘Roll On Columbia’ (Hank Williams) was the first tune she sang with those guys and with such a surprising intensity that no one could deny she was something special.

On to San Francisco with Big Brother and the Holding Company, Janis was just along for the ride and had a humble position as sideman in the group - but not for long! The group made her the main attraction (smart move) and they immediately increased in popularity. The eventual dismissal of Big Brother as Janis' official band was a very difficult move for her and one that I feel contributed greatly to her chronic drug dependency.

Of course who can deny the splendour of Pearl and all the songs that she and the Full Tilt Boogie band pressed to vinyl. The third set of this show is going to ROCK AND ROLL!

Come out to the Almonte Old Town Hall on March 31 7:30 pm to get the full story. Three sets representing three stages of Janis' life and musical career - we invite you to share in her journey.

Come dressed for the era because there will be prizes (come on, you know you want to!).

The evening is going to sway, swing, rock and roll – all for a good cause, the Lanark Animal Welfare Society (I'm a sucker for a puppy in need, what can I say?).

Tickets are $25 in advance and $30 at the door. They are available online at Joplinesque's web page.

UNSIGNED ONLY MUSIC COMPETITION

*****************************************************

Due to overwhelming demand, the deadline for the inaugural Unsigned Only Music Competition has been extended until April 11, 2012. This will be the final deadline for this year's competition.
Unsigned Only is designed for solo artists, bands, and singers who are not signed to a major label record company or any of its affiliates, subsidiaries, or imprints. The goal of Unsigned Only is to find an outstanding, talented performer: a band, singer, or solo artist ... a newcomer or veteran ... raw or polished – the "gem" that needs to be discovered. Unsigned Only is looking for the total package. Judging criteria includes vocals, performance, originality, and songwriting. There is also a category just for Vocal Performance which accepts songs that are not original.

SHE’S THE ONE

*****************************************************

The RBC Royal Bank Bluesfest is running their 2nd annual cross-Canada talent search and contest for great emerging female Canadian musicians, ‘She's the One’. Online applications are open now via Sonicbids and Survey Gizmo, with zero cost to the applicant. Check out www.ottawabluesfest.ca/shestheoneinfo for more details and links to applications.

Deadline March 31, 2012.

The ‘She’s the One’ competition is open to female singer/songwriters or bands with a lead female member of any age, of any music genre, who are Canadian residents. There are two categories: Solo and Band. Ottawa Bluesfest organizers will gather submissions, with three finalists selected from each category. These six finalists will have a 20-minute slot to perform at the RBC Royal bank Bluesfest for a professional jury, on Saturday, July 7th. One winner will be chosen from each category. Judging will be based upon various criteria, including performance, stage presence/showmanship, originality, musicality, audience reaction, and the ever-important ‘It’ factor.

Winner of the solo category will receive a cash prize of $2,000 and winners of the band category will receive $5,000 cash prize. This is a great opportunity to support the talented female musicians from across the nation not only monetarily but also with some great exposure at one of North America's largest outdoor festivals.

Garrett and Keith may be friends back home in the East Coast, but when it comes to show their abilities to play, they take it very seriously!

To see and hear Mason and Hallett together on the same stage is to share a part of Canadian music history. Garrett Mason and Keith Hallett both have an extensive list of accomplishments and are well respected amongst their peers and fans across Canada and beyond. This is the 'ultimate guitar grudge match' and they are looking forward to letting their talent do the talking.

James Hunter & guests

Mavericks, 221 Rideau Street

Sunday, April 15 @ 9 pm

James Hunter‘s second U.S. album, "The Hard Way", (released on Hear Music in June 2008), was among that year‘s most eagerly anticipated new releases. In terms of both inspiration and quotation, James has taken much from the musical past – as he will be the first to admit. But it‘s his own infectious sound and inventive songwriting, blessedly free of slavish mimicry or retrograde nostalgia, that today‘s audiences are responding to.

John Pizzarelli

Centrepointe Theatre, 101 Centrepointe Drive

Thursday April 19 @ 8 pm; tickets $59.50

Using performers like Nat “King” Cole, Frank Sinatra and Joao Gilberto and the songs of composers from Richard Rodgers, George Gershwin to James Taylor, Antonio Carlos Jobim and Lennon & McCartney as touchstones, John Pizzarelli has established himself as one of the prime interpreters of The Great American songbook and beyond, bringing to his work the cool jazz flavour of his brilliant guitar playing and singing. His latest recording, “Rockin’ In Rhythm”, the singer-guitarist’s first ever Duke Ellington recording, features 12 classic tracks that prove Pizzarelli – like Ellington – knows how to show off the strengths of the musicians in his band. In addition to a cut for solo guitar, four songs highlight the quartet (with pianist Larry Fuller, bassist Martin Pizzarelli and drummer Tony Tedesco) and seven include the Swing Seven horns with arrangements by Don Sebesky.

The legendary guitarist/vocalist is no stranger to Ottawa (he was last here at the 2006 Ottawa Jazz Festival), but he has never before appeared in such an intimate environment.

Black and Blues

The show features a heavy dose of electric blues and rhythm and blues, with the occasional selection of sixties soul. The first hour is dedicated to artist profiles and reviews of recordings on particular labels. In the second hour there is a blues calendar, a rundown of events in Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa, and interviews with “new and reissued blues and rhythm and blues tracks on wax”, alternating with “live blues and R&B for a Sunday night” in the last half hour of the show. On the last Sunday of every month, the show goes “down in the delta” for a selection of acoustic blues tracks in the final half hour of the program.
