Bluestone CD Release Party

With special guests Wise, Young & King and Become the Sun

Ritual Nightclub, 137 Besserer Street

Saturday, March 3 @ 8 pm; $10 advance, $15 at the door

Ottawa's Bluestone is releasing their third full length album, “Admissions”, and is backing up their release with a 5-week tour into the U.S. of A. This home-grown group already has three cross Canada tours and is now ready to break new ground. There's no greater way to celebrate this next big push than a CD release party!

Produced in most part by Steve Foley at Audio Valley, ‘Admissions’ marks the band's third full length release, and that's just a small part of the story. Three full lengths, yes, but three cross Canada tours, multiple singles circulating commercial radio, three videos, and exposure on MuchAxcess and many festival stages help paint the full picture. The band is ready to move to the international stage, touring 24 US cities in just 5 weeks.

The album also features the track ‘My Love’, produced by Ken Freisen; the band liked it so much they flew to Vancouver to film the video. The video was directed by long time collaborator, Nadav Santo, and is featured on the band's website.

Bluestone is led by one of Canada’s best female guitarists, powerful vocal harmonies, a killer rhythm section and a dynamic brother & sister front. The self-managed band has carved out a unique style of rock, blended with guitar harmonies, dueling solos and both male and female lead vocals.

Robbie Antone’s Blues Machine

Rainbow, 76 Murray Street

Saturday, March 3 @ 10 pm

Formed in 1999 in London, Ontario, Robbie Antone’s Blues Machine gets its sound from the many influences of singer and harp player Robbie Antone. Antone was born on the Oneida Nation near London ON. Inspired from his collection of Chess and Sun records, Antone set out on his quest to tame the harmonica and develop his own distinctive tone and sound. Many years and 3 CDs later, consisting of original material and covers, Antone produces his latest CD “Red Road Blues”, inspired by his Native American heritage, his musical roots and his life experiences.

Making their first appearance in Ottawa, Robbie Antone’s Blues Machine will be rockin’ the Rainbow on Saturday night.

Swamperella

Irene’s Pub, 885 BankStreet

Saturday, March 3 @ 9:30 pm; $12

The original mandate of Swamperella, “to honour the Cajun music tradition’’, has never been compromised. The integrity of the traditional form and sentiment has always been maintained even as originals and Zydeco began seeping into the Swamperella repertoire. But there’s nothing stodgy about this band. The old time flavour stirred up in a brand new pot makes for a fabulous and rich musical experience and the Swamp-stew just keeps getting yummier.

The 15th edition of Virée Blues Boréale presents

Adam Karch

Le Petit Chicago, 50 Promenade du Portage (Old Hull sector)

Wednesday, February 29 @ 8 pm

A native of L’Acadie, a small town in Quebec, music has always been a part of Adam Karch’s life. His long journey, deep into the world of the Blues enabled him to take in his musical influences when digging to discover the origins of some classics such as the hits of the Rolling Stones, a group that influenced his whole childhood. The research which allowed him to discover his present day idols also brought him to study eras up to the ‘30s and ‘40s, thus shaping the musically mature artist who surfs between the Blues, Rock and Rockabilly in his own style. To develop his own style, he started by studying Jeff Healey and Stevie Ray Vaughan; then, at 18, he went on tour in Germany with none other than his major model, Jeff Healey.

While his first album, “Crossroads Diary”, displayed pop accents, his next, “Cotton Fields”, is much closer to his roots as it explores an older repertoire while lying in modernity. Adam dedicates the album to an escaped slave, a woman who fought for the freedom of the American Black People, Harriet Tubman, known as the Moses of the Black People.

BLUES NEWS

********************************************************

The newly launched Unsigned Only Music Competition, from the team behind the International Songwriting Competition, is fast approaching its March 5 deadline for artists to enter. Designed for solo artists, bands, and singers who are not signed to a major record label, Unsigned Only's goal is to find an outstanding, talented performing artist: a band, singer, or solo artist...a newcomer or veteran...raw or polished - the "gem" that needs to be discovered. Unsigned Only is looking for the total package. Judging criteria includes vocals, performance, songwriting, and originality.

Completely separate and distinct from ISC, Unsigned Only is a fresh and novel approach to other music competitions. Not only does it offer great prizes, recognition, exposure, and the chance to be heard by a group of judges consisting of high-profile recording artists and industry professionals, but it also takes it a step further and puts the Grand Prize winner in direct, personal contact with the influential record label executives who are the ultimate decision makers. For the first time ever, a music competition offers the Grand Prize winner the unprecedented opportunity to be mentored by a group of record company presidents, A&R reps, and more. This is a once-in-a-lifetime chance for an artist to directly network with the top echelon of record company professionals and get guidance, advice, feedback, and networking opportunities.

The Grand Prize Winner will be awarded $5,000 in cash (plus additional prizes) and one-on-one mentoring by an elite group of record company executives. First Place and Second Place winners will also be selected in each category. Entries are being accepted now until March 5, 2012. Winners will be announced in July, 2012. Categories include: AAA (Adult Album Alternative), AC (Adult Contemporary), Christian Music, Country, Folk/Singer-Songwriter, R&B/Hip-Hop, Rock, Pop/Top 40, and Vocal Performance.

All entries must be original music except for the Vocal Performance category which accepts original or cover songs. Judging criteria in the Vocal Performance category will be based solely on the quality of the vocals, thereby allowing singers who do not write their own songs the opportunity to enter.

For more information, please contact Candace Avery at 615.251.4441 or cavery@unsignedonly.com.

A Night of Blues

with Tim Bastmeyer, Julian Fauth, James Thomson, and Corey Richardson

Rainbow, 76 Murray Street

Friday, March 9

Canadian blues singer/songwriter Tim Bastmeyer started his musical career in 1986 and over the years has played and recorded with a number of different recording artists and has performed throughout North America, as well as the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Scotland and England. He is also a producer, engineer, and music teacher and has produced award-winning recordings and engineered countless recording projects (music and foley). Tim has taught hundreds of young musicians to play guitar, bass and drums.

Bastmeyer will head out on a tour of Canada and several U.S dates in 2012 to support his new self-titled release. Featuring Juno award winning blues artist Julian Fauth on piano, James Thomson on bass and Corey Richardson on drums, this release is much different than Bastmeyer's 2010 recording, a solo acoustic blues recording titled “Graveyard”. “Tim Bastmeyer” contains 11 tracks, featuring 10 originals and a cover of the blues classic 'I'm Going Down' and is a mix of blues ballads and hard blues with a rock edge.

A Night of Blues stops off at the Rainbow on Friday, March 9.

Douglas Watson R&B Revue

Tucson’s, 2440 Bank Street

Friday, March 16

Douglas grew up in Chicago and was surrounded by the blues. His father Lovie Lee (Eddie Watson) played piano from 1979 until 1983, in the last Muddy Waters Band. Carey Bell, Lurrie Bell and Eddie Clearwater were close relatives who often shared the same address. Koko Taylor, who Douglas refers to as his Godmother, was a friend of the family. Douglas played bass on several recording sessions in Chicago by artists like Lovie Lee, Blyther Smith and Vance Kelly. He is also featured along with Bonnie Raitt and Stevie Ray Vaughan on A. C. Reed’s recording, “I’m in the Wrong Business”.

When Douglas moved to London Ontario in 1989, he was known primarily as a funky bass player. His first steady gig was with the house band at the Other Side of Five. The gig lasted for 3 or 4 years. During this time Douglas began to sing and he started to get noticed as both a vocalist and as an entertainer. His singing was so impressive that he started getting gigs just to sing. He has a huge smile and an even bigger voice. His vocal style combines the power of Muddy Waters with the sweetness of Marvin Gaye. The current Douglas Watson R & B Revue has been together for almost 2 years and features Mississippi Pete Temple on Harmonica, Chris “Mr Sweetness” Latta on guitar and Maciej Lukasiewicz on drums.

Rainbow, 76 Murray Street

Saturday, March 24 @ 10 pm

Sponsored by the Toronto Blues Society, this band made a real impression at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis, February 1-4. Their first performance on Wednesday at Wet Willie’s initiated a buzz that resulted in a full house for their second performance on Thursday; they closed out the First Great Canadian Polar Bear Blues Showcase in fine style on Thursday afternoon; they filled their venue to capacity for their appearance in the semi-finals on Friday night; and they were the only Canadian band asked to participate in the Kings of Beale Street competition on Saturday night. And they sold a whole lot of CDs.

Following the success of “Dirty Little Young’uns”, they’re heading off to Halifax to record their 2nd CD in March (more about that below) and will be swinging through our area on their way home from the recording session. So they’ll have new tunes to share, not to mention the incredible high energy of these four extremely talented young musicians. This is a ‘don’t miss’ show!

JW-Jones CD Release Party

Rainbow, 76 Murray Street

Friday, March 30 @ 10 pm

On his 7th release, aptly titled “Seventh Hour”, Jones has teamed up with multi-Juno award winning artist/producer, Steve Dawson, to mix the album. After performing in 17 countries, 4 continents, and releasing 6 critically acclaimed discs, it's time for a change. No famous guests. No fancy studios. This is JW-Jones and his band doing what they do best – right at home, recorded in J-Dub’s living room. Tracked on a crisp fall weekend, this cool release is sure to stir up some discussion about where his music is going as he soars in a vibrant new direction. Shattering visual boundaries is also an integral part of this project. Mitch Lenet, 3D artist and commercial photographer, has developed a concept for this package with cutting-edge technology that is guaranteed to turn heads in the music and fashion world. While keeping one foot firmly planted in the roots he came from, this Maple Blues Award winner believes that appealing to a younger audience is the most important way to ensure the evolution of blues-based music.
