BLIND LEMON TOP 20 CANADIAN BLUES

******************************************************
Greetings & Happy New Year,

This year’s ‘Blind Lemon Top Twenty Canadian Blues Albums’ Survey has seen several significant changes.

First and foremost, the list of eligible albums is taken from the Juno Eligible list, which was also used for the Maple Blues Eligible list, as provided by John Valentyn of the TBS (Thank you, John!) There is some overlap in the old system and this new list, which means some albums that were eligible last year, are eligible again this year. But this is the only time that should happen.

Secondly, there will be NO email voting this year. The 2011 survey will be online only, thanks to the fine people of WorldApp and http://www.keysurvey.com (Thank you James Thomas)

Lastly, we are starting later than usual. This is due to a combination of over work and ill health on my part, but also it allows us to time the release of the survey results in time with the Maples Blues Awards, giving us a much better tie in with the major blues event of the Year in Canada! The Survey is open now, and will end at 12:00 am, January 19, 2012.

PLEASE forward this message and survey link on to anyone and everyone you know who loves great Independent Canadian Music!

The Survey is VERY simple. Just select 3 albums from the main list, then rank them 1 - 2 - 3! You will help support Canadian Blues and spread the word about the amazing artists we have here at home... and the fabulous work they do!

The Survey Link is
http://www.keysurvey.com/survey/405693/1157/

Please vote... please forward this message... please do your bit to help support great independent music! If you don't... the Lady Gagas of the world will win!

A message from Terry Parsons, host of the Newfoundland (and internet) radio show, ‘The Blind Lemon Blues’

Music By The Bay Live Small Club BIG SHOW Concert Series presents

MonkeyJunk ***SOLD OUT***

The Waterfront, 590 Liverpool Road, Pickering ON

Friday, January 30 @ 9 pm

Paving their own way in blues, MonkeyJunk is a cross between Muddy Waters, Lightnin’ Hopkins, swamp R&B and soul boogie that will keep your foot tappin’ and your body movin’.

At the 2010 Maple Blues Awards MonkeyJunk were nominated for 6 awards and took 5 including entertainers of the year, vocalist and guitarist. They beat out the likes of Colin Linden and Colin James to win Blues Band of the year at the Canadian Independent Music Awards.

Guitars, keys, drums, harp and vocals are their sound, no bass- but they say Hound Dog Taylor didn’t have a bass player, and Little Walter often didn’t use one either.

Upon being asked about his passion for his music, delta blues legend Son House said “I’m talkin’ ‘bout the blues, I ain’t talkin’ ‘bout monkey junk”. And thus was born the quirky name of the equally quirky contemporary blues band MonkeyJunk. Blending delta blues, soul boogie, and country with modern presentation, MonkeyJunk boasts an innovative and creative approach to the blues. Steve Marriner, Tony D, and Matt Sobb, play well off of each other, seamlessly creating an upbeat, catchy sound that has really started to be noticed on the blues scene in Europe and the States.

Friday & Saturday, February 3-4

AND

With Steve Marriner

Rainbow, 76 Murray Street

Sunday, February 5 @ 9:45 pm; $10

What separates Brandon Isaak from the rest of the pack – besides his world-class musicianship and songwriting – is his ability to connect and involve the audience in his live shows.

In 2010 Brandon was nominated for a Maple Blues Award for Songwriter of the Year. This honour recognized him as being one of Canada’s top songwriters. He was also one of 13 song writers picked to write a road song about their province / territory for the CBC’s Great Canadian Song Quest 2011. Brandon is also known as the front man and main songwriter/guitar player for the popular Canadian band, The Twisters, based in Vancouver.

Brandon has just released his first solo album entitled “Bluesman’s Plea”. Don’t let the title fool you; this is a very versatile and diverse roots album that truly reflects the music that he plays in his live performances. The songs showcase Ragtime, Delta Blues, Piedmont, Gospel as well as Swing styles.

Brandon's affinity for the rawness and spontaneity of the blues is second to none, as anyone who has had the privilege of being a part of his audience will tell you. He brings a firebrand style of guitar as well as incredibly stirring vocals that truly have to be witnessed to be appreciated! He is VERY much in the moment as he rips it up, and you'll be impressed with the calibre of showmanship in the performance of songs & stories by this great Canadian artist.

Friday, January 20 @ 8 pm; small cover at the door

The Kim Pollard Band is: Kim Pollard - lead vocals & acoustic guitar; Kherson Amell - drums; Bruce Cowle - keyboards & trumpet; Roger Law - bass & vocals; Paul Stacey - saxophone; Matthew Woodward - electric guitar & vocals. Special guests The Marg Bass Band, The Roosevelts and Mojo Shooter have agreed to perform for free at this fundraiser. What a show this is gonna be!!

From band member Matt Woodward:

“I'm writing because I'm hoping you can help me and my friends get to Graceland. Kim is a Napanee-area gal with a great, bluesy, Aretha-style voice. She is a very gifted songwriter with an interesting history, hopefully destined for greater things. And now we are going to compete in the International Blues Challenge at the beginning of February. This year just a handful of Canadian bands [Editor’s Note: 7 bands and 7 entries in the solo/duo category] are going down to the competition – there are around 200 acts from about a dozen countries.

Here's a youtube link for one of Kim's tunes, ‘Slip Away’ from her soon-to-be-released CD: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jIC0ar1y1PE

Our band now has to find enough $$$ to get us down there (transportation, accommodations, etc.) so we are throwing two fundraising blues-themed events, The first took place on Friday 13 January in Napanee at the Strathcona Paper Centre, and the upcoming event is in Kingston at Brandee's, Friday 20 January.”
