This Year's Lineup

THE BUSHPILOTS: The BP’s are gonna play some acoustic, some Xmas and some brand new rock n roll … a preview of what’s to come on their fourth album due out in 2012!
GOOD2GO: Also making their debut festival appearance at Ottawa Bluesfest in 2009, GOOD2GO make their fourth appearance at the BP's Xmas bash. Fronted by flamboyant show woman Miss Maureen and backed by solid veteran musicians, G2G's mix of high energy rock n roll and dirty lounge music promises to get your pulse racing and feet a-moving. GOOD2GO's fifth album was released in 2010.
THE SINNERS: A savage rhythm section combined with infectious melodically driven song-writing and superb musicianship covering numerous genres with clever originals and complimentary covers. The result is AWESOME!!!!
THREE TIMES LUCKY: Three Times Lucky, formed in 2009, are a group of experienced Ottawa area musicians offering a combination of classic rootsy blues rock, with a healthy dose of their own original numbers to boot. Yer Alternative Rockin' Blues Satisfaction is Guaranteed!

Huge thanks to John Cooke at Servicemaster Ottawa, Mark Monahan at RBC Ottawa Bluesfest and Danny Sivyer at the Rainbow, Steam Whistle Brewing and all the performers for making this event possible.

The 14th edition of Virée Blues Boréale presents

Angel Forest

With Denis Coulombe & Paul Deslauriers

Le Petit Chicago, 50 promenade du Portage (n the Old Hull sector)

Wednesday, December 14 @ 8 pm

An Angel and Two Guitar Stars to help you get festive
We would like to reassure those who fear an ordinary Christmas show filled with all the classics; don’t worry! After discussions held on “Blues On The River Cruise” of last September, inspired by the atmosphere of the Eastern Townships’ Red Room, the all new Inn owned by two of our guests, this concept show will bring together one of the Top Blues Women and two of the best guitarists in Canada. They won’t present you with the usual commercial ambience of the holidays; instead, they will bring you around to Virée Blues Boréale’s family type of party. It will be a cosy musical party, all Blues, with a perfect blend of our guests’ greatest hits and a few holiday standards but in Blues arrangements, all of that in a most suitable atmosphere!

A Grande dame of the Blues, with a more than 24-year international career in Québec, Europe, Mexico, Japan and Morocco, a Blues stream constantly flows through the life and music of this artist often compared to Janis Joplin and Melissa Etheridge. After a short two albums’ foray in pop music, Angel Forest came back strong to the Blues for her sixth album and with a complete show featuring her own compositions. Electrifying, fiery and passionate, she is an artist who sings with all her body and soul like only she knows how. More entrancing than ever with her powerful and husky voice, everybody is attracted by Angel Forrest’s charisma. Her songs charm everyone; they’ve got a Blues Roots aroma, heavy with emotions ... her unique way! Thrill to the warm lounge atmosphere of this concept show, in an acoustic version, where she’ll offer all of us an overview of all of her albums. She’ll be joined by her life and business partner who also happens to be a guitar virtuoso, Denis Coulombe and by one of the 100 world’s best guitarists, as proclaimed by Rolling Stone Magazine, Paul Deslauriers.

BLUES IN 2012

******************************************************

Music By The Bay Live Small Club BIG SHOW Concert Series presents

MonkeyJunk ***SOLD OUT***

The Waterfront, 590 Liverpool Road, Pickering ON

Friday, January 30 @ 9 pm

Paving their own way in blues, MonkeyJunk is a cross between Muddy Waters, Lightnin’ Hopkins, swamp R&B and soul boogie that will keep your foot tappin’ and your body movin’.

At the 2010 Maple Blues Awards MonkeyJunk were nominated for 6 awards and took 5 including entertainers of the year, vocalist and guitarist. They beat out the likes of Colin Linden and Colin James to win Blues Band of the year at the Canadian Independent Music Awards.

Guitars, keys, drums, harp and vocals are their sound, no bass- but they say Hound Dog Taylor didn’t have a bass player, and Little Walter often didn’t use one either.

Upon being asked about his passion for his music, delta blues legend Son House said “I’m talkin’ ‘bout the blues, I ain’t talkin’ ‘bout monkey junk”. And thus was born the quirky name of the equally quirky contemporary blues band MonkeyJunk. Blending delta blues, soul boogie, and country with modern presentation, MonkeyJunk boasts an innovative and creative approach to the blues. Steve Marriner, Tony D, and Matt Sobb, play well off of each other, seamlessly creating an upbeat, catchy sound that has really started to be noticed on the blues scene in Europe and the States.

CBC RADIO CONCERTS ON DEMAND

*******************************************************

Tuesday, December 13
concert 1: The Chet Baker Songbook,
recorded at CBC Vancouver Studio 1
Chet Baker is one of the legends of jazz, with his vulnerable and affecting voice, and subtle trumpet playing. Mike Allen leads an ensemble of fine jazz musicians who love Chet Baker's music. Adam Thomas sings with an uncanny feel for Baker's voice, while Brad Turner resonates in a beautiful way with Baker's trumpet sound. If you love the music of Chet Baker this tribute concert will make you smile; if you don't know Baker's music, this is a wonderful opportunity to discover something truly special.

Thursday, December 15
concert 1: k.d. lang and the Siss Boom Bang!
recorded as part of the 2011 Edmonton Folk Festival
Hearing k.d. lang perform at the Edmonton Folk Music Festival reveals an inspired artist having the time of her life. Songs from her new album 'Sing it Loud' literally vibrate with energy, and her new band invigorate songs from k.d.'s back catalogue. k.d. lang first appeared on the music scene in 1983, playing the local Edmonton community halls, pubs and bars. She immediately garnered a huge following, and less than 2 short years later, was to walk in front of her biggest crowd at this very festival. Her talent is undeniable, her career has gone global, but for one night, k.d. came home to sing, and dance, and celebrate with the old gang. This concert wrapped up the 2011 Edmonton Folk Music Festival, and it was truly a k.d. lang love fest.

Friday, December 16
concert 1: Sojourners Gospel Christmas,
recorded at Festival Place in Sherwood Park, Alberta
Nothing speaks to the holidays like the deep rich sound of gospel music, and Vancouver-based vocal group The Sojourners is among the best. Will Sanders, Ron Small and Marcus Mosely each have almost 50 years of singing and sharing music under their belts, and their voices blend beautifully in three-part gospel harmonies. This concert by a Canadian musical treasure will lift your soul.

concert 2: Jazzy Christmas with PJ Perry
Swing into the holiday season with a spirited and delightful show of jazzy jingles by JUNO-winning Edmonton saxophonist PJ Perry. PJ Perry is joined by piano master and arranger Bill Mays, bassist Neil Swainson and drummer Terry Clarke to create a chamber-styled jazz quartet popping with melody and swing.

Friday, December 16 on the Canada Live podcast
Blackie and the Rodeo Kings,
recorded at the 2011 Edmonton Folk Music Festival
Earlier in 2011, Blackie and the Rodeo Kings released their 7th album Kings and Queens. This ambitious project saw the group performing with some of their favourite female musical friends, including Emmylou Harris, Lucinda Williams, Holly Cole, Cassandra Wilson and others. At this year's Edmonton Folk Music Festival, Blackie and the Rodeo Kings were featured on the Sunday afternoon concert on the festival's Main Stage. Thanks to good fortune and insightful booking by the festival producer, two of the 'Queens', blues artist Janiva Magness and Canadian chanteuse Serena Ryder, were also performing on the weekend, and joined them during their set.
