After discussions held on “Blues On The River Cruise” of last September, inspired by the atmosphere of the Eastern Townships’ Red Room, the all new Inn owned by two of our guests, this concept show will bring together one of the Top Blues Women and two of the best guitarists in Canada. They won’t present you with the usual commercial ambience of the holidays; instead, they will bring you around to Virée Blues Boréale’s family type of party. A Grande dame of the Blues, with a more than 24-year international career in Québec, Europe, Mexico, Japan and Morocco, a Blues stream constantly flows through the life and music of this artist often compared to Janis Joplin and Melissa Etheridge. After a short two albums’ foray in pop music, Angel Forest came back strong to the Blues for her sixth album and with a complete show featuring her own compositions. Electrifying, fiery and passionate, she is an artist who sings with all her body and soul like only she knows how. At the 2010 Maple Blues Awards MonkeyJunk were nominated for 6 awards and took 5 including entertainers of the year, vocalist and guitarist. They beat out the likes of Colin Linden and Colin James to win Blues Band of the year at the Canadian Independent Music Awards.
Guitars, keys, drums, harp and vocals are their sound, no bass- but they say Hound Dog Taylor didn’t have a bass player, and Little Walter often didn’t use one either.
Upon being asked about his passion for his music, delta blues legend Son House said “I’m talkin’ ‘bout the blues, I ain’t talkin’ ‘bout monkey junk”. And thus was born the quirky name of the equally quirky contemporary blues band MonkeyJunk. Songs from her new album 'Sing it Loud' literally vibrate with energy, and her new band invigorate songs from k.d.'s back catalogue. k.d. lang first appeared on the music scene in 1983, playing the local Edmonton community halls, pubs and bars. She immediately garnered a huge following, and less than 2 short years later, was to walk in front of her biggest crowd at this very festival. Her talent is undeniable, her career has gone global, but for one night, k.d. came home to sing, and dance, and celebrate with the old gang. This concert wrapped up the 2011 Edmonton Folk Music Festival, and it was truly a k.d. lang love fest.

Earlier in 2011, Blackie and the Rodeo Kings released their 7th album Kings and Queens. This ambitious project saw the group performing with some of their favourite female musical friends, including Emmylou Harris, Lucinda Williams, Holly Cole, Cassandra Wilson and others. At this year's Edmonton Folk Music Festival, Blackie and the Rodeo Kings were featured on the Sunday afternoon concert on the festival's Main Stage. Thanks to good fortune and insightful booking by the festival producer, two of the 'Queens', blues artist Janiva Magness and Canadian chanteuse Serena Ryder, were also performing on the weekend, and joined them during their set.
