Rick Taylor made his first major appearance as a singer, songwriter and guitarist at the famed Mariposa Folk Festival in 1971 and went on to become a regular at many Canadian festivals and clubs. Blues, jazz, country, rock, roots, world, and contemporary music all influenced Rick's early years on the club and festival circuits.
After living 23 years in Vancouver where he performed, recorded and produced, Rick relocated to his home province of Ontario in 2007. In February 2010 he returned to his blues roots with his definitive CD release of “Lucky Room”. This solo collection of 11 songs covers the road from Mississippi to Chicago, paying homage to the blues masters from the late 1920s to the early 1950s that have helped shape Rick’s music over a 40 plus year career.

Bill Garrett is a musical triple threat: a Canadian folk legend who is also well-known as a producer and one of the founders of Toronto's Borealis Records. Well-known as a solo artist, he was also a staple on CBC Radio for 18 years, co-hosting Sylvia Tyson's folk program Touch the Earth and later producing The Entertainers and Six Days on the Road with musician-host David Essig. Since leaving the CBC in the mid-1990s, he has produced more than 65 folk, blues and jazz recordings.
Sue Lothrop started playing professionally in Montreal. She moved to the city from Quebec's Eastern Townships, where she had played in college folk groups with friends Allan Fraser and Brian Blain. Sue later went on to tour extensively throughout Canada and the U.S. both as a solo artist and with folk/rock group Rings and Things. Sue spent the better part of the 1980s and early 1990s raising her daughter Corina. Today she splits her time between doing therapeutic music animation for seniors and performing with Bill.
Since starting to perform together Bill and Sue have played clubs, concerts and festivals in Canada and the U.S. Their debut album as a duo “Red Shoes” was released in July of 2003 and has been receiving wide acclaim.
Your host is Terry Gillespie “Canada’s King of Roots Music and 2011 winner of The OBS “Road to Memphis Challenge”. Terry will introduce each set with 3 tunes then turn the remainder of the set over to Bill and Sue.

Matt’s newest album, “Coal Mining Blues”, was produced by Colin Linden (who co-wrote and plays on several tunes) and recorded at Levon Helm Studios in Woodstock, New York. Featuring the Band keyboardist Garth Hudson and Olabelle singer Amy Helm, it’s a rich vein of new songs, many addressing the trying lives of working people: There’s the self-explanatory “Work Hard for the Luxury,” and the moving title track, which rings true in mining communities from Cape Breton to Sheffield and West Virginia. But not all of “Coal Mining Blues” is about hard work, as rollicking up-tempo cuts like ‘Lay it on the Line’ and ‘Fired Up’ bear out.

Hot off European and Western Canadian tours, Jim Byrnes was in fine form for this CD release show in his hometown of Vancouver. Vancouver loves its blues and the hometown audience on this night showed their love for their favorite bluesman, Jim Byrnes. On "Everywhere West," his fourth CD on Black Hen Records, Jim digs deeper into a dirtier, grittier blues than on any previous recording. He covers songs by Jimmy Reed and Lowell Fulsom, two lifelong favorites. And he channels the roots of gospel through the music of bluesman and preacher, Rev. Thomas A. Dorsey. As ever, Jim wraps the music in stories from the well traveled but endlessly fascinating blues highway. Everywhere West won the 2011 Juno Award for Blues Album of the Year. This is Jim Byrnes' third win in the category.

Montreal's own "Queen of the Blues", Dawn Tyler Watson, has teamed up with guitarist/singer/songwriter extraordinaire Paul Deslauriers to create a very unique partnership. Formed out of a love of performing together, the duo has been captivating audiences with their own brand of feel-good, back porch style entertainment since they joined forces in 2004. Known for his blistering electric work, Paul strips down and bares a masterful acoustic style all his own, while Dawn, renowned for her powerful stage presence and ability to front any big band with authority, shows a more delicate side. With the simple honesty of two voices and a six-string guitar, they have been creating a buzz on both the national and international Folk and Blues scenes, touring across Canada, France, and into the US. Their debut album, en duo, explores a rich palette of styles and moods, seamlessly bending the borders of the Blues from Roots to Soul, and on into Folk and Rock & Roll.
