CKCU ANNUAL FUNDING DRIVE

I’ve updated Ron Sweetman’s letter from last year; it is reprinted below it as it is still relevant.
Dear Blues & Jazz Fans,
CKCU-FM is a remarkable and unique institution; starting thirty-six years ago as a campus radio station, it saw and accepted the challenge of the needs of the diverse communities who live in Canada's National Capital Region, and today, as a campus/community station, it broadcasts not only in English but in a dozen foreign languages. I also believe that our quality of programming in blues, classical, country, dance, jazz and world music is unsurpassed by any other Canadian radio station.
We are listener-supported radio; this means we receive no subsidies whatsoever from any level of government and can only survive because of your contributions and our volunteers' dedication.
I am writing to ask if you would consider sponsoring one hour of alternative/community radio at CKCU-FM 93.1 in Ottawa. CKCU provides at least six unique and valuable services to the community:
(1) We present a whole range of alternative music that you'll never find on commercial radio, presented by people with passion and authority. Our jazz, blues, dance, world, country and classical music programs cover the whole history of these musics, are presented by acknowledged experts in each area, and reject the superficial fashion-conscious “Top 40” approach you’ll hear on the region’s commercial stations.
(2) We provide a voice and a community billboard for many of the communities that make up our population; we have regular Aboriginal, Asian, Caribbean, Chinese, Christian, Filipino, German, Gospel, Haitian, Indian, Jamaican, Jewish, Latin American, Muslim, Persian, Scottish, Spanish, Somali, and Vietnamese programming – to name a few!
(3) We give an independent and diverse point of view on political and community affairs. We are not owned by a large profit-oriented corporation or a government, and our volunteers and our Board reflect the diverse opinions and viewpoints of the communities they come from.
(4) We bring you the renowned BBC World news four times every weekday, respected internationally for its independence and broad coverage.
(5) We support local musicians by publicizing their gigs and airing their CDs. You don’t have to be a big name to get heard on CKCU.
(6) We keep you informed of upcoming jazz and blues concerts that you might otherwise miss, by mentioning them on our programs and playing upcoming artists.
As a former Treasurer and Chairman of the Board, I can assure you that CKCU has a bare-bones budget. Because most of us are volunteers, we are able to bring you world-class radio at a cost of a little over $40.00 per hour! We have three revenue sources:
- A voluntary levy paid by the students of Carleton University
- Income from organizations who sponsor particular programs
- The community of listeners and musicians [You!]

Matt’s newest album, “Coal Mining Blues”, was produced by Colin Linden (who co-wrote and plays on several tunes) and recorded at Levon Helm Studios in Woodstock, New York. Featuring the Band keyboardist Garth Hudson and Olabelle singer Amy Helm, it’s a rich vein of new songs, many addressing the trying lives of working people: There’s the self-explanatory “Work Hard for the Luxury,” and the moving title track, which rings true in mining communities from Cape Breton to Sheffield and West Virginia. But not all of “Coal Mining Blues” is about hard work, as rollicking up-tempo cuts like ‘Lay it on the Line’ and ‘Fired Up’ bear out.
On September 20 Matt sets off on the sort of tour that would kill a lesser man. He’ll be in Ottawa at the end of October. And quick note — some dates have already sold out, and tickets are going fast.

Top of the bill at the very beginnings of Virée Blues Boréale, he won the hearts of all the area’s Blues fans at his very first performance. Now living in Texas, he cannot visit us as often as he, and our patrons would want him to. One of the most requested by Virée Blues Boréale’s audience, he makes sure to show his gratitude on each visit. By popular request, after a three year absence and for the fifth performance at Virée Blues Boréale, The Jo Hell Band and their guest from Texas, Sleepy T.
Discovered in 2005 by Virée Blues Boréale, Jo Hell had been playing his Blues in Montreal’s bars since 1994 (since he was 16). Along the way, Jo Hell and his “Red Roosters” have played all the best Blues Festivals and the most reputed bars, increasing from 50 to 225 performances a year, then to well over 365 a year and Red Roosters’ territory never ceased expanding. Now a Power Trio with Jo Hell (guitar and vocals), Steve Hupée (drums) and Franck Courchesne (bass), they became The Jo Hell Band. Another name and another setup, but still the staggering technical prowess, the same raging feeling and a superb sound. On their last visit here, in 2008, they came to the Outaouais to launch our Virée Blues Boréale’s 8th edition. They also went to Victor Studio in Montréal to record their eponymous album which unfortunately is still unknown to most in the Outaouais. But we predict that it will become a real success here as it did in the U.S.!

‘Bad Boy’ is the sixth annual version of the National Steel Blues Tour. Featuring songs and stories in the round and performances on vintage National guitars, the all acoustic event has long been “Canada’s biggest little blues and roots tour.” The iconic expedition routinely travels as many as 25 thousand km by land, with its motto “Bring the Blues to Your Town, no venue too big, too small, too grand or too humble.” Past performances have been featured on CBC Radio’s “Concert on Demand,” “Canada Live,” and “Saturday Night Blues.”
It’s not about fancy tour buses and slick, new guitars. Out on the Blues Highway it’s a battered 1994 Lincoln Town Car with speakers mounted on the roof. It’s Doc and Big Dave driving through town to promote the show. It’s the guys hauling their gear in and setting up their own PA. And then it’s a lifetime of songs and stories delivered by two guys who have been there and done it all – ‘Bad Boy’ Blues.

Averaging over 150 tour dates a year, guitarist and vocalist Coco Montoya’s explosive guitar playing and soul-driven voice have propelled him to the upper reaches of the blues-rock world. From his early days as a drummer to his current status as one of the top-drawing guitarists and vocalists on the blues-rock scene, Montoya has forged his reputation through years of hard work and constant touring. And it all started with a chance meeting in the mid-1970s with legendary bluesman Albert Collins, who offered Montoya a gig as his drummer. Albert took an immediate liking to Montoya, becoming his mentor and teaching his new protégé secrets of the Collins ‘icy hot’ style of blues guitar. Five years later, John Mayall happened to catch Montoya at a jam session and was blown away. This led to Montoya’s touring the world for ten years with the legendary Bluesbreakers. Since stepping out as a bandleader in 1993, Montoya has released solo albums and has performed non-stop at clubs, concert halls and major festivals all over the world. At every show, fans’ jaws drop, and critics rave about Montoya’s mind-bending guitar licks and impassioned vocals.

Douglas Watson R&B Revue

Raised in Chicago Illinois by Claudia and Eddie ‘Lovie Lee’ Watson, Douglas Watson was born to sing the Blues. Early in his life his first love was the church, where he learned to cherish the soulful sounds of Gospel Music. He later branched out into the world of Blues & R&B Soul, encouraged and inspired by his father and his step brother, the late Carey Bell.
From an early age Douglas learned to love music and performing from his father. Lovie played piano with Howlin’ Wolf, John Lee Hooker, B.B. King and The Muddy Waters Band. Douglas recalls his early years as a youngster listening to his dad’s rehearsals in the house they lived in Chicago. This mentoring from the best, combined with years of performing has moulded Watson into a superb singer and bass guitarist.
Early in his career Douglas worked as a session musician. He played with various Chicago artists including, Koko Taylor, Albert Collins, BB King, John Lee Hooker, Lonnie Brooks, and toured with A.C. Reed and The Sparkplugs for nine years.
Moving his talent north, after several years in London, Ontario, Douglas settled in Kitchener, Ontario where he met Mississippi Pete Temple and their partnership formed The Douglas Watson R&B Revue. The band consists of Chris ‘Mr. Sweetness’ Latta on guitar, Maciej ‘Mr. Magic’ Lukasiewicz on drums and partner ‘Mississippi Pete Temple’ on Harmonica. The band has been together six years and in 2007 won the Toronto Blues Society New Talent Search. In that same year they were recorded live on CKMS Radio. This gave fans and critics an inkling of the band’s potential.
Douglas Watson has been noted for his ‘full throated vocal style… that is matched by few’. His range and style have brought him much acclaim from some of the most respected R&B vocalists in the industry, including the late James Brown. It has recently been written that Douglas Watson “Is one of the finest vocalists and front man on the Canadian scene”. This record shows why.

Leon Redbone — a master guitarist, dry comedian, and a warm and witty singer who recreates the classic jazz, blues and pop music of the ’20s and ’30s — will make his first appearance in Ottawa since, as he put it “I can’t remember when.”
In fact, he probably does know when he was last in Ottawa, but he has always cultivated an aura of mystery about his background, in part because he wants the emphasis to be placed on the music, rather than the “personality” behind it.
He does, however, claim to have been born in 1929 (on the date of the stock market crash), but later told interviewers he was born in Bombay during a monsoon to violinist Niccolo Paganini and Swedish soprano Jenny Lind. (It should be noted that Paganini died in 1840, and Lind in 1887).
Mr. Redbone is a laid-back singer, a dry story-teller, and an archivist with wide musical tastes — as long as the music is more than 70 years old. His concerts will likely include forgotten old pop songs, classic ragtime, blues from the likes of Lonnie Johnson or Blind Blake, and jazz standards by Fats Waller or Dixieland jazz pioneer Nick La Rocca.
He began his career in Toronto in 1970 and in his early days, he could be found in the pool hall that used to exist in the entrance to a downtown subway station; if you asked for Mr. Grunt, he would, guardedly, answer the telephone. A fixture in local folk clubs, he also had an acoustic duo, called Little Sonny, with David Wilcox.
Since then he has gone on to make numerous television performances (he was a regular for many years on the Johnny Carson Show, as well as on Saturday Night Live), and he has recorded some 15 albums, the first in 1975. He has toured around the world, appeared in numerous television commercials, and was even featured in a Far Side cartoon. He recently recorded material for the television series Boardwalk Empire.
A superb acoustic guitarist, Mr. Redbone is also a skilled pool player and is dangerous with a deck of cards; people are advised not to engage him in either pursuit.

It's hard to resist, easy to digest and deliciously addictive to listen to. David Lindley has been smashing musical barriers and fusing idioms from his earliest days. Probably best known for his solo on Jackson Browne's "Runnin' on Empty," Lindley has cut a singular and eccentric path through more than three decades playing music as a coveted sideman and a world class performer in his own right. Together, they create an incredibly full sound for just two guys. Harry Manx and David Lindley joined forces at Vancouver's Vogue Theatre on a rainy night in April; the audience was so mesmerized and enchanted by their performance that you could have heard a pin drop.

Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings played to a sold out audience at Winnipeg's Garrick Centre. This was the New York soul band's second appearance in Winnipeg. Besides Sharon's soulful singing and the band's great arrangements, The Dap Kings replicate the era of the mid 1960's by dressing and acting the part. They pay special attention to the authenticity of their clothes, the vintage microphones used on the stage and the band's instruments. The Dap Kings' show is presented as an old school music revue rooted in the soul shows of the late 1950's and '60's. The Winnipeg fans loved every minute of it.
